I have been battling a bug for three weeks. Soup has been a big help. In fact, chicken soup. Portillo's is a hot dog place first and foremost I enjoy a good Chicago hot dog, and they deliver. We had three adults and two children. The bill came to $73. Not too bad for the amount of food we received. This location is themed toward the gangster days of Chicago. If you are into pictures of Al Capone, this may be a destination for you. Or not.

After a long flight into Chicago, my brother's very first stop had to be Portillo's. He'd heard so much about it and was beyond excited to finally try it--honestly, I don't see him light up like that very often, and I'm glad we went. The food wasn't exactly what I expected, but it was really great. Everything is made fresh, and there are tons of options. I'm not usually a hotdog person, so I went for a sandwich--and wow. The bread was fresh, the meat was thinly sliced, and the gravy was perfectly seasoned. It came out quickly, hot, and delicious. The atmosphere is casual and fun, with Chicago history and memorabilia decorating the walls, which made it especially enjoyable as someone visiting from out of town. Ordering is easy either at the counter or from one of the kiosks, and the staff worked hard to keep things moving. The dining area was busy but well-kept, with staff constantly cleaning tables. I really wanted to try the famous chocolate cake, but after finishing my sandwich there was just no room. My niece, however, ordered the chocolate cake shake--and oh my goodness. It was rich, thick, and absolutely decadent. Worth the hype! We actually ended up going to a couple of different Portillo's locations during our 5-day trip (at least three times!), which says a lot. Prices are a little on the higher side, but not unreasonable for the quality and portion sizes. If you're in Chicago--whether it's your first time or your tenth--Portillo's is absolutely worth a stop.

    First day of breakfast 4/15/25

Checked out the new breakfast options. Ordered the polish sausage, egg and cheese sandwich, hash brown and chocolate cake donut. My daughter ordered same, but we shared the donut and she ordered a chocolate cake iced coffee. It wasn't too busy when we got there around 9. It was the first time I used Portillo's perk and ordered on the kiosk. We were going to order combos, but I already had my coffee and my daughter wanted to try the chocolate cake iced coffee which we didn't see as an option. So we did a la carte. I realized I never had their polish sausage before. It was juicy, fat and full of flavor. The eggs were definitely liquid eggs and very fluffy. I couldn't taste the giardiniera and didn't really like the cheese which was disappointing since I love their cheese sauce. Hash browns were the highlight. They were very crispy and not greasy. The donut was ok. Not what I expected. The chocolate cake iced coffee tasted like vanilla syrup and no chocolate flavor. I don't know if it was made incorrectly or the drink flavor development was lacking. I would get their breakfast again. Would I go out of my way to get it? No. I'd rather go for lunch or dinner for an Italian beef or chopped salad.

Solid Portillo's location! Lots of seating and the food came out quickly. First time trying Portillo's did not disappoint!

Just a bit of their extensive collection of nostalgic decor.

Wow, it's hard to believe my one and only review of this place was almost 10 years ago! Time really flies, but this big and popular Portillo's is still going as strong as ever. I also can't remember the last time I ate in here (not counting a couple of Yelp events), but it could be the same 10 years, yikes. Anyway, the wife and I ate in for lunch today as it was just too convenient. I ordered a regular Italian beef ($8.19) and a hamburger ($6.19) for us and we just roughly shared it, and roughly means I had more than 1/2 of the tip-top delicious Italian beef ha. For the first time, I also used one of their handy self-ordering stations. I liked having the Italian beef with the gravy on the side for self-dipping. It's still the best Italian beef out there IMHO but I will admit to some waffling after having an IB from Johnnie's in Elmwood Park. The hamburger patty on the other hand was pretty bland and all you could really taste were the condiments, but at least it was all hot and fresh. This Portillo's is still one of the best around for its offerings and thanks for being such a reliable stalwart in our neighborhood.

The best thing on the menu is their famous chocolate cake. It's the absolute best and always moist. I've been many times and have never left without a slice. sometimes I drop by just for a slice! for the vegans out there, the plant dog is surprisingly good, as are their onion rings. Late night it is a bit hit or miss with food quality, but daytime is solid.

Who knew Portillos now has breakfast menu! It's not too large but I thought it was pretty good. I had a savory breakfast with polish sausage breakfast sandwich which came with eggs. It was good, definitely quantity. But never thought of polish sausage as a breakfast item. The eggs were excellent, not dry and exactly like how I like scrambled eggs. The croissant was a hit with my kid, as they gobbled it up quickly. I like the breakfast at Portillos.

Shoutout to this location for being open late. My friends and I came here after a long day and it was a great spot for us to hang out at. The food was great as per usual, I had the cheeseburger, chili cheese hot dog, fries, and a drink. I also ordered a blue moon because I didn't know that this location served beer! We'll be back! Thanks for having us!

Portillo's really needs to examine their business model. When you pick up your order in the drive through, their employees read your order to you off the receipt that's stapled to the bag. And since I assume the employee who took the order entered it correctly, of course the order will be recited correctly if the person handing you your order is simply reading the order off the receipt. That says nothing about what's actually IN the bag. More than once in recent visits an item has been missing but if I had not checked the bag before driving away I'd have been out the money and missing part of someone's meal. The folks here also act annoyed or put out because you're holding up the line by checking to make sure everything's correct, but... if they're not going to, I'm not going to leave the line, find something's missing, and then have to wait in line again. Anyway, it's surprising to me that Portillo's seems to be so obtuse about this problem with their order/delivery system, but maybe they're counting on people not caring.

    Chocolate Cake Donuts!
    Paul J.

I heard a viral rumor that Portillo's had partnered with Stan's donuts to turn the iconic Portillo's Chocolate Cake Shake into a donut. So the next time I hit the Windy City, found myself at the Portillo's in Niles with a pack of six Chocolate Cake Shake donuts and a few cups of coffee to go! Smooth, black and bitter coffee, offset by the soft, fluffy cake donuts encased in sweet chocolate. A little waxy, but sweet and filling. Is it the same as eating a Portillo's Chocolate Cake Shake? Of course not. But it's close enough, especially at 7am in the morning. Don't know how long these "limited edition" donuts are gonna last, but if you're a fan of Portillo's, you gotta at least try these once. A fun morning for sure!

Their hot dogs, cheese fries and big beef are the BEST IN CHICAGO!! Make sure you get extra sport peppers for your hot dog. The service is quick and the ambiance is like a large cafe. You must try this if you want authentic Chicago food!

First timer! Had a classic big sandwich with fries & a drink. Service was quick from kiosk to food on the table. Very flavorful; dipping gravy on the side. Location was clean and very fun vibe & decor. Next time I'm coming back for a shake or a slice of cake!!!

Same good food but my first time at this location. They also have Barnelli's which offers pasta dishes. We were here for a fundraiser. I had the spicy chicken sandwich and my daughter had a burger. We split cheese fries and the new chocolate eclair cake, which is amazing, in addition to their traditional chocolate cake. The line was long but they process orders quickly. Would return when I'm in the area.

We were a little surprised when nothing was done for it, which isn't a big deal, but I'll be honest it was disappointing since we did come specifically to celebrate and had talked about it w our server. 3/5 Arancini - Very salty. None of us really enjoyed them because of that. They also came out lukewarm instead of hot. Would have been excellent if it was less salty and came out hot and crispy. 5/5 Fig & Mushroom (subbed for prosciutto) - The menu doesn't specify how the fig is served. Turned out to be fig jam rather than fresh fig, which wasn't what we expected. A little too sweet for me but overall still very much enjoyed it. Their pizza was cooked perfectly with enough toppings and cheese. Very good pizza! 5/5 Braised Short Rib + Polenta - so good! The short rib was excellent, just slightly salty. The polenta was perfect, and it came with a generous portion of wild mushrooms. 2/5 White Wine Cake (recommended as "unique") by our server - This was the most disappointing meal item. Our waitress told us it was special, but it was very bland and didn't match the description or image on their website. Their website showed a cake with a large scoop of ice cream on top, fair amount of whipped cream and raspberry sauce. Ours came with maybe a quarter of the size of that ice cream scoop, a little teaspoon dollop of whipped cream that you eat in one bite and the raspberry sauce was a tiny smear on bottom for decor but there wasn't enough to actually eat it. The cake itself was moist but lacked flavor. It took a really long time to come out, we thought perhaps they forgot, then forgetting we were celebrating a birthday on top of that was disappointing. Atmosphere - Beautiful space, very well done. The only issue is how close the tables are, you can't pull your chair back without hitting someone, and getting to the bathroom requires asking others to move because of how tight the layout is. Overall, we really enjoyed it and would return. While there were a few dishes we wouldn't order again, and others we would. Would love to try the wild mushroom pizza next time! The only thing was that since we had come to celebrate a birthday and didn't end up doing that, the night felt a little less special than we had expected--but still a nice experience overall.

Our server, I think his name was Jose, was very professional, courteous, and friendly. He came back to check on us numerous times and was very quick bringing anything we needed. We had the asparagus salad, the Darte salad, the grilled shrimp appetizer, the grilled vegetables, the grilled calamari, the carpaccio of octopus, and chicken Parmesan. At the start, they brought out bread, olive oil and grated cheese. The bread was a little dry on the outside, but it was warm. The asparagus salad was missing something - maybe salt? It just felt like it lacked flavor even though it had Gorgonzola cheese on it. The grilled vegetables, however, were perfect. It was a combination of one longstem, artichoke heart, one long grilled carrot, a couple of slices of zucchini, and a couple of asparagus. We had asked for them to be well grilled and they were sort of, I can't imagine how few grill marks they would have on them if they hadn't done what he had asked. The Darte salad was a nice size portion with mixed greens, golden and regular raisins, and walnuts. The balsamic vinaigrette is nice and flavorful, and doesn't separate the way it can at some places. The grilled shrimp were very good, nicely seasoned and very well charred. The grilled calamari were great, although they were quite small. There were many more of them than on the pictures. The carpaccio of octopus was very nicely, presented with very thin slices of octopus a nice bright dressing over it and the greens. The chicken Parmesan was a very large portion with the breaded chicken cutlet underneath a large layer of cheese ravioli all topped with marinara sauce, and then cheese, which was browned very well, it was very tasty. For dessert we had two different gelato - the maple bourbon, which would go great with a banana cake and the hazelnut chocolate, which was unbelievably flavorful and smooth. The pistachio and ricotta cake looks very good, but we didn't want to get three desserts. Maybe next time!

Why only Five Stars?…read more Pazzi Di Pizza in Park Ridge, located next door to the fabulous Pickwick Theater, was an amazing choice for a birthday dinner. Just the two of us on a Monday night when many restaurants are closed, we arrived at our reservation time and were promptly seated. Each person who 'greeted' us had a big smile and a welcoming tone helping to set the mood in a positive way. Our server was Patrick who arrived once we were settled and we placed our drink order. My partner ordered a Mezzacorona Pinot Grigio, which she truly enjoyed, and for me, well, Jamesons is Jamesons and I'm always happy when my friend John Jameson joins me and especially when it's a healthy pour. As an appetizer we ordered the Grigliata Mista which hosts grilled Calamari, Octopus and Roasted Red Peppers with a Balsamic Vinaigrette dressing. Check out the photos, it was like a meal onto itself. The chef has Octopus down to an art. Soft, melt in your mouth with a fabulous 'grilled' accent. The Calamari was also done perfectly. soft with Just the right crunch, not tough and I'm not sure I'll ever order any other of their Antipasti moving forward. A great start to the meal. For entrees my partner, who has dined here with friends several times before, and being a huge eggplant fan, always has ordered the Involtini di Melanzana. Lightly breaded Eggplant Rolls Stuffed with Fresh Ricotta and Topped with Marinara with a side of Crostini. I tried a taste and knew exactly why it's her go to dish. Yes, it's on the Antipasti portion of the menu but she brought home enough for dinner tonight. I ordered from the Pasta portion of the menu and went right to the seafood medley, Zuppa di Pesce. Mussels, Clams, Shrimp and Calamari over Linguine. I ordered with the Garlic and Oil 'sauce'. The 3 Shrimp were 3-bite large and done to perfection. The Mussels were plentiful; the clams tender and the Calamari was delicious. Again, check out my photos. As an aside, I watched a few of their Pizzas be delivered to nearby tables and as a New York Pizza Snob I will have to give them a try soon, they looked 'just right'...

The Italian meal included bread, salad, and soup to start things off. Dishes included sliced sausage with peppers (our favorite), penne pasta marinara, and chicken marsala. One vegetarian opted for the eggplant parmesan and it looked good too. Spumoni ice cream completed our meal. Service was spot on, as our glasses of water were filled throughout the meal.

The owners are so friendly and hands-on, making sure every guest feels like part of the family. The atmosphere is cozy, warm, and perfect for and special casual meal with loved ones. The food? Absolutely delicious! Every dish is made with care and top-quality ingredients. We started with the homemade bread with garlic spread and calamari "Bobby style" a signature appetizer, which was perfectly crisp on the outside and soft on the inside. For the main course, I had the Veal Pancetta, and as always it was one of the best I've ever had - rich, flavorful, and packed with layers of love (you can really taste the passion in the cooking). You can tell this restaurant is dedicated to keeping things local and supporting the community, which I truly appreciate. It's rare to find a place that combines amazing food with such a strong sense of family and connection. Highly recommend stopping by if you're in the area - you won't be disappointed! We'll definitely be back!
