Portillo's has become a regular part of our trips to Chicago. We're probably in town once maybe twice a year and Portillo's and Garrett's popcorn are required stops. We've been to various locations but this location is on the way back home so we've been here a couple of times. The burgers are chargrilled, juicy and fresh. I got a double cheeseburger with everything on it with fries and everything was hot and fresh. That burger was huge. I recommend getting a side of hot peppers and adding some to your burger. It just kicks the flavor up a notch. Oh we also got an order of onion rings and those were good too. We didn't get dessert time, but trust me, the milkshakes, cake shakes and cakes are delicious....a sure fire way to big your back, lol. We dined in and our order was ready in about 5-minutes. I was raised on the original Portillos from the trailer on North Ave to their corporate empire. Before the sell out the beef was cheaper and a wet itallion weighed 1/3 more than the one I got today. I ordered 3 jumbo dogs with verying condiments. A wet itallion beef, a salad. And a large French fry Over $40.00 Everyone are and was satisfied. However I had to wait over 25 minutes because they had no more jumbo dogs. The fries were missing but they did throw in there local famous chocolate for the wait and finally the fries camem The jumbo dogs were for others, mo complaint. The fries were very good, fresh and large. However the standard order in Chicago of Italian beef were with peppers was a complete disappointment. For over $40 dollars the beef was not wet and there was less beef in it than a hotdog. Yes beef is more expensive but give me the option to pay for for a classic Italian Beef that was their original trademark. The drive through line had one worker who was less ingaging with elements of an Indian help desk with a bad connection. The others in the group voted for portillos based on the original experience of years ago I also had a chopped salad. My last order in Downers Grove was not edible. I wanted a polish I'm French bread. It came in a mushy hotdog bun and burt black polish on all sides it was too charred to eat with no cooked onions. They tried to make amends but it was ordered and delivered to the Downers Store and I wasn't going to go back and pick up the correct order because I was baby sitting. I think Portillos' lost their soul to stoic corporation cold, hard corporate with no feel for there customers. If it wasn't for company I would not have spent over an hour in the order lane. And the person taking orders was very offended that when I handed her the credit card she said no and I was expected to know how her little gadgete worked. It was a new card with a chip. She shoved it in my face and finally she said to put it under the order machine to pay. AI would have been better to communicate and it would have been a better experience That location parking and drive through took 30 min to place an order and over 26 minutes to have them bring my food out and then waited for the.kidfing fries. Rafael came from the back to show me and tell me about how I can make sandwiches back home and provide me the knowledge, even though he was busy and still working he multitask and made me feel important and cared for, this was an experience I was anticipating and it for exceeded my expectations as me and my spouse got a travel 10 hours for this glorious food! I finally got to try Portillo's and obviously opted for the Chicago style hot dog. Incredible. I was a little skeptical about the lack of ketchup but wasn't even thinking about it when I got to try this! The pickle is such a perfect addition. They have easy options for food delivery too. So many creations on their menu. They also have the famous cheese sauce that there is no shortage of. Chicago has Portillo's everywhere. So convenient! read more

Based on Grubhub delivery. I'm not from Chicago but do visit occasionally. While for most the pizza is the must have, for me it's Portillo's. This local chain is known for their Italian beef sandwiches and Chicago dogs. Tonight I ventured away from the reliable sandwich and tried the burger with a Chicago dog. Superb! The burger tastes like a backyard burger. The meat has a char to it and all the toppings one would want. The Chicago dogs did not disappoint. A good frank in a poppyseed bun with sweet relish, a pickle spear, garlic salt, tomato, onion and a small somewhat hot pepper. Well done! I've never had a disappointing experience with this chain. If you've never been then I recommend the Italian beef sandwich dipped with peppers. It keeps me coming back. And the chocolate cake shake is a nice treat as well. read more

But when I ask for both sweet and hot peppers and then also have to pay for the peppers, PLEASE don't skimp on the sweet peppers. One sandwich had no sweet peppers at all, and the other two had so little that I might barely get sweet pepper in ever other bite. I'm not firing Portillo's. Fast and efficient! Looked nice and clean driving through the drive-thru. The food was as good as we remembered!

Stopped in here with the intent to do some work and eat a quick bite... unfortunately they had no WiFi accessible so I ended up having to work off of my phone. No one seemed to mind that my coworker and I stayed there for about an hour while trying to do some work. I ordered the Maxwell polish dog and a ceasar salad because the lady at the front didn't give me confidence that one dog would be enough lol. Although I didn't finish the whole salad, it was good. I did enjoy the Maxwell dog too, the grilled onions really added a lot of flavor. The place was very decorated for the holidays! I was kind of surprised to see that this building looked so old... honestly it seemed very industrial compared to the 3-5 other Portillo's we passed while driving to get to this one. Another employee who likes to argue with a customer when they shouldn't and defends a company policy that is not only unhealthy, but misleading. I ordered a well done burger at the drive through, no cheese, lettuce tomato mustard and onion. It was made correctly, but I never asked for salt. As I took my first bite, I tasted salt and it totally ruined the burger. I never asked for salt, there is no salt listed on the menu board as an option, but someone at Portillos thought their customers need more salt, and unless they say please don't add salt, they will add it for you! As if the processed stuff they serve isn't salty enough. I remember they did this to me at 95th St a few years ago, but I actually forgot about that trip. It was a while ago. I ordered a GRILLED CHICKEN sandwich - that too was LOADED with salt and I watched the guy use the same aluminum shaker used to SALT POPCORN! I swore I would never go back. Never say never. When I called to tell the manager at Northlake the issue, "Perla" made sure to lecture me as though it's no big deal, that is how they are trained - no apology, no nothing. Not the best PR for Portillo's in my opinion. I wasted $7 because I threw it out. Portillo's Employees are trained to SALT BURGERS AND CHICKEN SANDWICHES and will only eliminate it if you tell them not to do so. I shouldn't have to tell them ANYTHING other than what my order is! Who does that and why!!?? That's like adding cream and sugar to someone's coffee without them ASKING for it! I'm not going back, I'm done. They can give customers salt packets or add it when they ask for it, I don't need Portillo's to add something I never asked for. read more

What a great place to grab a hot dog! Every time I'm in the Chicago area, I try making a stop at Portillos. The Chicago Style Hotdog is phenomenal and you're definitely missing out if you haven't tried one. The sport peppers have a great kick and add to the uniqueness of the hotdog. read more

I'm sure had we eaten inside out experience may have been different. But time only allotted is a quick trip through the drive-thru. There were 2 guys taking orders outside. Which in most cases is great as it keeps the line moving. Unfortunately this was our first time and we had no idea what was on the menu. It would have been nice if they were carrying a portable menu. Either way, they scooched up the cats already of us so we could look at the menu. Because we felt rushed, we just grabbed 2 hot dogs for the kids, onion rings and a Maxwell sausage. Kids enjoyed the hot dogs. The sausage sandwich was very good. I wish they would have asked if we wanted condiments cuz I forgot and they didn't include ketchup or mustard. I DoorDash this to my hotel and if you like wet saucy bread, this is for you. I'm not a fan of wet sandwiches or soggy bread so this was not for me. The gravy, the Italian beef, and the Italian sausage were actually quite flavorful and tasty so I would have enjoyed this with rice as my carb of choice. Also order it with the peppers for a nice kick. The fries were also tasty with the right amount of sauce. I did enjoy the sauce it came with. Maybe if given the option, order everything separated so you can assemble it yourself. read more

No visit to Chicago is complete without a stop at Portillo's. This is a new location in one of the suburbs, but it has the same menu as the original. I ordered the Polish dog, which was juicy and full of toppings. This is my first time trying the Polish dog, and it didn't disappoint! As you can tell from my photo, it was covered in toppings, and even came with a pickle. My husband ordered the chili cheese dog, which was covered in delicious chili sauce. I know that most people order the beef sandwich, but I wanted to try something new on my stop. The staff was very friendly and gave us free refills on our drinks. They also came around with free samples of pasta.I think this location is just as good as the original. read more

Another solid visit to Portillo's. A can't miss with what I would almost call comfort food. Chicken noodle soup and a chicken sandwich. This location is themed in the 1920-30's style. It has some really neat decor and seems rather intimate. Based on the location I would assume that it may be very busy during lunch. I go to this portillos at least twice a week for lunch because I work in the area and I don't know what it is but every time I order a beef with hot peppers and a fry they barely put any beef inside. and I pay 14 dollars. I don't know what the person making my sandwich is thinking I'm a skinny guy and I'm still hungry after eating it. This place is an institution in Chicago. It's been around for decades. The interior is chock-full of Chicago history, memorabilia and neon signs, even hanging from the ceiling. They're located in Illinois and a few other states. And they specialize in Italian beef and Chicago style hot dogs (other options include burgers, ribs and spaghetti). Unfortunately I'm not a big fan of Italian beefs but I love hot dogs. So of course I ordered the classic Chicago dog ($3.66) and fries ($2.33). Crinkle cut are my fave. It's nothing fancy, just good food. The service is ok, probably what you would expect from a fast food restaurant that's not CFA. But the prices can't be beat. I'll definitely stop back in when I'm in town and craving an authentic Chicago dog. read more

This place is the worst. They don't know how to take your order correctly even if you repeat it back-and-forth several times. They will go back with you back-and-forth at the window and try and explain things that don't even make sense instead of trying to rectify the issue and get you the correct food. Very frustrating experience plus the wait time for your food is extra long. Elmhurst is way better on every single level. I will never be returning to the Northlake Portillo's. Ever. Most frustrating experience & felt like the staff could care less and want to argue with you instead of making things right. Horrible customer service experience. read more

5/20/2017 - A staple of Chicago! I kept hearing "You have to get the Chicago Hot Dog and the Chicago Beef at Portillo's". We got both with fries and pop!. The Chicago Beef was delicious, hot and moist. I ordered it with mozzarella cheese ($0.50 extra). This is a big sandwich on baked French bread and I was able to finish half. The rest I took to go. The Chicago Hot Dog was my favorite with the crunchy skin. This came with everything includes: mustard, relish, celery salt, freshly chopped onions, sliced red ripe tomatoes, kosher pickle and sport peppers piled onto a perfectly steamed poppy seed bun. This Portillo's review is long overdue. Who doesn't love Portillo's? Everything on their menu is literally all delicious. Well maybe not their salads. Who gets salads at Portillo's? And they also have fantastic order number rhymes. My go to order is their beef, dipped with hot peppers and a side of cheese fries. When I'm really hungry I'll order a hot dog or a chili cheese dog as well. Their beef has always been consistent in flavor, even though I felt like they've decreased in size over the years. It's perfectly soaked in their very flavorful gravy and also have some tasty hot peppers. Any If you're really hungry you can order their big beef. A significantly larger version of their Italian beef sandwich. They're hot dog is served with fresh tomatoes, peppers, onions, pickles and neon relish. Rarely do I get burgers, but when I do have them, they're also really good. Their chili cheese dogs are also amazing. Served on a poppy seed bun, with a very good tasting chili and some cheese. They come with onion, but I order them without. There are times when I also crave they're maxwell Street Polish, but it's a hit or miss on those. Not because of they're taste, but because of their availability. Either they've ran out or there's a 10 minute wait to have one made. I've also tried their beef and cheddar croissant and enjoyed it as well. And during lent, they off a very good tasting pepper and egg sandwich. You can either get it with their French bread or even in a croissant. Yes I know..I've tried it all! You can't forget about their chocolate cake shake. It's truly phenomenal. It has their famous chocolate cake mixed with their chocolate shake, all very chocolaty and very sweet tasting. And you get a free slice of chocolate cake on your birthday through their email system. "franks & beans, franks & beans!" -Warren (There's Something About Mary) Portillo's has plenty of franks, and even a few beans, in the form of their chili cheese dog. It's a Chicago specialty, just as In-N-Out Burger is a California/West coast gig, and Skyline a Cincinnati-deal. Usually partnered with a Barnelli's Pasta + Sandwiches, any Portillo's in the greater metro area will ALWAYS have a stack of cars in the drive-thru, doesn't matter what time of day. It can be 10:30-11am, people are lining up for an Italian beef or double Chi-style red hot. Crazy people are crazy. The crinkle-cut fries are excellent, nice and salty. The 'dogs are priced reasonably, and like many have already commented, the chocolate cake is to-die-for. Most locations have a beer and wine station (although I didn't notice if this one did). I was leaning towards a solid 4-star, but as I sat and devoured my red hot with extra sport peppers, I heard something that gives Portillo's that extra boost. When your order is called, instead of simply saying "number one-twenty-five" or shouting your name, as many Mcdonalds do nowadays, the designated announcer has a catchy rhyme that goes with your order number. Per example: "order #127, welcome to hot dog heaven", "order #129, your lunch looks devine", or my personal favorite "order #126, come gitcho' Portillo's fix!" Every time a customer picked up their food, they were smiling, a few even laughing. I couldn't help but smile and laugh too; something so small having an equally-pleasant impact on dozens of people during their lunch hour. Hell, it made my day. This is a rating for the beef sandwich. I've had many beef sandwiches from Portillo's over the years, but man has it gone downhill. I had a beef sandwich with hot giardiniera and an order of fries. Service: As always, there were a lot of cars in line. They had two separate lines going with order takers working both lines. Once ordered, the wait was 8 min for the beef, fries and several other items. Flavor: None. There was literally no flavor included with the beef. I was eating something, but if I was blindfolded, I'd have a hard time knowing it was italian beef. The giardiniera was uninspired and had minimal spiciness. The fries were decent as always, but even those seemed less good. As stated above, the quality and flavor has definitely gone down over the years, but I'd rate this as the worst I've had there. If you're doing chains, stick with Buona Beef. If you're looking for a smaller place, go to Johnnies. I will not get a beef from Portillo's in the future. Side note: their burgers are still good, but Buona beats them in burgers as well...in my opinion. read more
