First and foremost I love Chicago cuisine. Portillos has been on my Yelp radar ever since they opened shop in the Houston metro area. The location is a bit further in from 59S off of the Grand Parkway. Parking is a breeze. I knew there were a few menu items that were a must try for me. I could easily overeat and have both items but I chose to eat one there and utilize the drive thru for my second item. I went ahead and went with the Italian Beef Sandwich with sweet peppers and large fries with cheese sauce. The bread on the sandwich was nice and fresh and the beef perfectly sliced was tender with the addition of the house gravy. Everything was delicious! It is a walk up counter and they do verify your order before you pay. I scanned my portillos rewards code for some points but also took advantage of the free entree that was attached to my membership. The interior is spacious and the theme is automotive Americana. To complete my experience I ordered a Chicago Hot dog through the drive thru and they take your order in person with a tablet and everything flowed smoothly at pick up. Will definitely be back in the future to try a burger, chili cheese dog and chicken sandwich.

I've been to the original Portillo's in Chicago, so when I heard one was opening in Houston, I was pumped as I always am sure to make a trip when in the Windy City. As a big fan of hot dogs, I had high hopes that it would live up to the Chicago experience. Unfortunately, after a few visits, I have to say--it just doesn't quite measure up. I've tried several items on the menu to give it a fair shot, including the cheeseburger, the Chicago-style hot dog, and the chili cheese dog. The cheeseburger, while char-grilled, was nothing memorable. It lacked the flavor or quality that would make me order it again. The Chicago-style hot dog is a classic and definitely the go-to for many. Personally, I'm not a fan of all the traditional toppings, but I respect the authenticity. Still at this location, the sausage itself has an odd texture that throws me off a bit. I do appreciate that it's a different kind of hot dog than your standard variety. The chili cheese dog was the most disappointing. The hot dog was cold, so I had to take it home and reheat it. On top of that, it had way too many beans in the chili for my taste, which was unappealing. On the plus side, the decor is fun and captures that classic Portillo's charm--it feels like a lively, family-friendly environment. It's usually packed, which shows that people are excited about it. The staff has always been respectful and helpful during my visits, which I appreciate. Overall, while I wanted to love this Houston location as much as the original, it just hasn't hit the mark for me yet.

I am so excited Houston area finally is getting a Portillo's presence. I was in the area so came by for lunch. I was shocked there wasn't a line in the drive thru so I went inside to order and dine in. There wasn't a wait inside either. I ordered the large beef dipped with extra gravy, onion rings and a maxwell st polish. Everything was AMAZING. They didn't dip the beef as much as I'd like but I anticipated that so I had extra gravy on the side anyway. My only complaint was the tables weren't well maintained. I had to wipe down the table where I dined before I sat.

Richmond, TX / CHICAGO QSR / 11-29-24 / LUNCH +The hot dogs are delicious! Get a Chicago-Style hot dog ($3.79). +The Italian Beef sandwich is a must-order. +Customer service was friendly and fairly quick. +The restaurant space is large and open. Plenty of parking, as well as drive-thru lanes. -No loyalty rewards program.

Food - #2 Combo Meal - chili dogs, no onions. It's a fixed menu and price, I asked for a L fry instead of a small but they don't substitute, instead I was charged for a L fry on top of the meal. #1 Combo Meal - Italian Beef (dry) gravy on the side. Side of cheese dip. The fries were okay, nothing special. Service - overwhelmed and not very detail when ordering at the registers. Not much help with explaining the menus or answering questions. Store - was really cool, nicely decorated and for how busy it was, the cleanliness was well maintained. My favorite part of this experience was listening to the rhymes while peoples number were being called out when their food was ready. Despite of how busy it was, our food order was not missing anything or messed up in any way. Having gone to Portillos while away for work in Chicago had me hyped for this but it was simply not the same. Not worth the drive for us so if they open one closer to home, I may check out something different to eat next time. I can bathe in their cheese sauce though. I know Houston has better hotdog spots than this if you're coming here for one or two. (no jumbo size hot dogs at this location, I was told by a manager) The Italian beef was okay but their au jus (gravy) was great.

This one was way better than the newer Katy location. Fries were crispy to perfection and everything was simply delicious.

Four stars for benefit of the doubt since it's still soft opening but i was not impressed. The highlight of the meal was the chocolate cake shake! Thick and creamy and delicious! The Chicago dog was OK. The dog was flavorful but something was lacking. The Italian beef was super dry. Bread tasted undercooked and the beef was unseasoned and was lacking. Maybe it'll be better once they establish itself a bit more. Will try again later

Omg when this place popped up in Richmond Texas, couldn't believe a bit of Chicago made its way to the south! Always a fan of anything Chicago- went on a Saturday night.. packed!! Service was fast and easy. Hardest to find a table but was do able. Italian beef sandwich is my fave and a small chocolate cake shake of course. This time I also tried the cheeseburger which was a bit too greasy, but nonetheless paired with their amazing soda became a great Saturday night meal. Good for a family outing, quick bite or just try Portillos from CHICAGO!

"Growing pains " . That would probably be the best way to describe this Portillos location. Fell a bit short of what I remembered eating in Chicago. We went on a Friday evening around 6-630. It was already busy with a short line. Maybe we waited 10 minutes. Line moved quickly. Overall hit the spot. We ordered the usual Italian beef (with sauce not fully dunked) , double cheese burger , and French fries. The Italian meat felt a bit under seasoned or at least bland. The Italian beef meat portion and bread ratio was spot on. The French fries were salted but not over cookers. The burger was a bit of a mess (with everything on it). Someone just put a bit much of ketchup and mayo. The best way I could describe it was a fancier Burger King char grilled burger. It didn't have a unique taste or something that would make me go back for. The resturant is crazy busy as you can imagine. Brand new nation chain brand. So of course people are going to flock to it. Be patient . Parking not as good as you would think. There is a drive through. Expect to wait. Staff was polite and looked adequate to handle the volume. My best way to describe Portillos is that ,"I would not go out of my way for it unless I was absolutely craving it". It was okay but not good / great. Maybe I'd go back in a few months once the crowds die down. -R

This past weekend I was interested in trying a new addition to the city from Chicago: Portillo's. I was educated from a coworker to call it "Por-til-low's" instead of "Por-ti-yo's" but I can't help it, I'm from Texas lol It was a very jam packed day and parking was difficult to find on a Saturday night. Both parking and the drive thrus were going. Intial step in to the restaurant was very busy. But was still moving at an ok pace. Very spacious seating area with lots of tables. I ended up wanting to try their most popular items from suggestions. I went with the 2 Chicago hot dog combo, big Chicago beef sandwich extra gravy, regular cheese sauce and a large chocolate cake milkshake. The Chicago hotdogs were great and traditional to its components and definitely no ketchup EVER! The chocolate cake milkshake is very chocolatey and thick. If you are not a chocolate cake fan, this can be pretty rich in flavor. The highlight for me is the Chicago beef sandwich. The roast beef is just the right consistency, the sandwich roll, and the hot gravy dripping is amazing. Overall I enjoyed the visit to Portillo's. There are great points for the quality and service all around. There were supervisors walking by and assisting. But there is the obvious concerns of the location opening recently. It would be unfair to start critiquing like they were a year in or regardless of the preparedness for opening. I would give them some time to get more established and get a flow for things. But I think they are in the right direction.

Sigh... Before I get into my review, let's have a quick moment of silence for my level of disappointment over an experience I was so excited for... Now, here we go... I had been stalking this grand opening for MONTHS. This was my favorite fast food chain growing up in the Chicagoland area, and when I heard they were coming to the Houston area, I screamed. I finally went a week ago. I chose the drive-thru because it was raining cats and dogs, and I didn't want to get drenched. All the signage and outside decor are reminiscent of what I remember in Chicago: the traditional Portillo's illuminated marquee sign, giving off that classic '80s vibe. The nostalgia was definitely there, folks. The drive-thru line was long but moved fast. Similar to Chick-fil-A, they have staff standing outside taking orders to speed things up, and it's indeed effective. Here's my first problem: THEY DO NOT HAVE COMBO ITALIAN BEEF!!! For those who don't know, it's an Italian beef sandwich with a charred, smoky Italian sausage link underneath the beef. It's an absolute staple in Chicago and was the first thing I planned to order. Huge bummer. My second problem: The regular Italian beef, which I ended up ordering, tasted more like a copycat version you'd attempt at home. The ingredients were there, I could tell, but they need someone from one of the Chicago locations to come train the staff on how it's done. The meat was flavorless, and the gravy tasted slightly off. Not sure what happened there. I only ate a couple of bites and threw the rest out. My third problem: The French fries were undercooked. They weren't crispy and looked lighter in color than I'm used to (I promise I'm not racist, lol). They were soft and could've used more salt. I also tried the Chicago dog. A Chicago dog consists of a Vienna-style hot dog, diced onions, relish, mustard, tomatoes, sport peppers, celery salt, and a dill pickle spear on a poppy seed hot dog bun. It's also known as "dragging the dog through the garden." This was the most tolerable item I ate. Not quite like home, but still good. Now, as with all grand openings, there are what? Say it with me--G R O W I N G P A I N S!!! This Portillo's location definitely has those. I think they'll get it together, and I'll probably give them another shot in a few months. Check this place out for yourself. Maybe your opinion will be different than mine.

First, sorry for the partially eaten food in the pictures. We started eating and I remembered I wanted to do a review. lol The restaurant is a decent size with outside seating, too. The one bad thing about sitting outside is smoking is allowed. There was a man smoking outside and it was stinky. We got a kids burger & fries, dipped roast beef with sweet peppers, double rodeo burger & fries, onion rings, 2 orders of dipping cheese. Nephew got a plain kids burger and fries which were a hit. Burger has a nice chargrilled taste. He commented the fries are like at Canes. He likes them. Husband got the Rodeo burger. It has red onion, onion rings and bbq sauce. He loved it. Will definitely get it again. He also liked the fries. I got the dipped sandwich with onion rings. Here's the thing. My husband accidentally ordered dipped instead of extra gravy. There's a big difference. The bread is dipped and sopping wet in the dipped sandwich. It was like tres leches wet. It was inedible. It was just wet bread. I did not eat it. (Not their fault. It says bread is dipped, just ordered the wrong type of sandwich and didn't enjoy what it was.) The beef was good. Next time I'll get the extra gravy-Portillo's way. That has gravy on top of the beef inside the sandwich. There were only 2 small peppers on the sandwich. It was an extra cost, too, so that was annoying. The onion rings were crispy and were well received by all. We each got a side cup of cheese but definitely could've gotten just one. It was a decent amount. I wasn't a fan of the fries...I like mine crispier...personal preference. Others liked them. The restaurant accidentally cleared our order after we paid for it so when we went to the window to pick it up when our friends order was ready they noticed it was cleared. Thank goodness we kept our receipt. We had to wait to have it prepared. They did comp an item so that was nice. They were apologetic and felt bad. The restaurant was packed along with the drive thru so we weren't mad at them. They took care of it appropriately. We will go back. Looking forward to trying other things. P.S. trying to view the menu on their app is extremely frustrating.
