Poseidon is so charming, from the ambiance to the people who work there. Its obviously an old family business and the people serving you treat you with love and care. I went in today for the first time to buy some sweet to give as a gift. The lovely woman behind the counter helped me pick just the right ones, suggesting a couple that I would have overlooked. Then I ordered a meat phyllo pie for myself. It looks small, but the warm dough and spiced meat was oh so filling and one of the most tasty I have ever had. I was at the 40th International Food Festival in NYC on 9th Ave and Poseidon had a vendor stand in the street. I bought a phyllo-wrapped cheese apricot roll and Baklava to share with my spouse. The cheese apricot was decadent and heavenly. Today I ate the baklava for breakfast. I'm a dedicated yogi and rarely indulge in such a luxury but the baklava was so beautifully moist, so drenched in honey, the layers so fine that I'm seriously thinking of heading back down town for another slice and skipping yoga today! read more

I stopped in here one evening after passing by on my way to dinner. I never knew about this place, but I'm glad I found it. I was amazed at the large selection of Greek pastries and frozen items. Everything looked fresh and was labeled well. I bought some of the Rolled Baklava and some of the Kourambiedes (almond butter cookies) to take home. My boyfriend's family is Greek, so I was excited to bring these authentic Greek pastries for them to try. We all liked the pastries very much and I would definitely buy more again. One of the owners, I think his name is Paul, helped me and was very friendly. He even explained all the different kinds of pastries to me since I didn't know what anything was. Paul also wrapped my pastries in plastic wrap inside the box so they didn't get stale, which I thought was nice. Poseidon is definitely doing something right since they've been in business for 93 years. The pastries are pretty pricey, but everything is homemade with quality ingredients. I'll definitely be back to try more of what they have to offer! read more

Worse bakery ever! Do not waste your money! I heard so much about this place on the Cooking Channel etc. I went in there today and bought a tiny piece of baklava for $3.50. It did not have any nuts or honey. Way over priced for poor quality pastries. Just goes to show that you shouldn't believe all the hype you read or hear about these eating establishments. read more

I've travelled extensively throughout Greece and Turkey (and have had my fair share of Greek/Turkish food....with a few extra pounds for proof), but Poseidon ranks among my top shops at home and abroad for Mediterranean sweets! The owners are extremely friendly, the shop is simple (humble even...like the mom and pop bakeries over seas), and the goods are out of this world. I love pistachios, so Poseidon's afali roll is my favorite; however, if you have a general sweet tooth and an adventurous palate, anything in the shop will make you leave happy you dropped in. read more

Well... I stopped in to try the Spanakopita and a few desserts that were rated well on here on my way to visit my mom in the hospital who refuses to eat anything I bring. She loved the Spanakopita. I got 2 pieces... and was going to take one home.. but she said "Leave that right here for later":0) Now I have to go back to try it myself. This Bakery was on the must see list for my mother who is a Food Network Junkie on our recent trip to Manhattan. I am so GLAD we found this place. Who says New Yorkers aren't nice people? Theowners of this place are the sweetest! We hung around the bakery and the owner answered all the questions my mother had about the process of making the phyllo. The food was to DIE for! I am not sure what it is called, but a custard pastry was recommended to us by the owner. It was fresh and hot out of the oven. A bite of heaven! The bakalava was amazing as well. I have been a Poseidon customer since I was in 6th grade, living on 45th St. in 1956! I knew the original, stately, grey haired owner and his lovely wife and would stop in regularly for a piece of baklava. Usually I would be given an extra cookie or some other treat. They have maintained the incredible flavor and consistency their grandparents always had, through subsequent generations. When I went to high school in Staten Island, and I still volunteered at the Museum of Natural History, I would make it a point to stop to get something to take home, about once a month. In college, in Kansas, I ordered pans of baklava and other pastries as gifts and for the holidays. In 1966 I went to Vietnam for 2 years. Poseidon continued to ship pans of pastries to me there, to the delight of the personnel I was stationed with. The pans cost about $5.00 then, including the pan! I used to send or bring them back. In 1968 I had a business in Virginia for many years and still had pans shipped to me, but on occasion would still stop in when driving to my mother's in Astoria. I was always welcomed and felt like family. My mother moved to Delaware and I back to N.Y. State, but in the Adirondacks. About 5 years ago, I had to take a bus to Delaware and drive a vehicle back to N.Y. With the lay-over at the Port Authority, I walked the old neighborhood and stopped in. The woman there was a now 4th generation wife of a grandson, still running the business, with little change in the small storefront and possibly the same cafe tables I ate at when a child. She was delightful, I ate my fill of spinach and sweet pastries, thoroughly enjoyed them all and her courteous conversation, updating me on the family history. This business is a very rare example of honesty, integrity, consistency, loyalty, and an immigrant success story, resulting in extremely long and hard hours of work for decades, passed on for generations. I am world traveled, have had Greek pastries and food in many places and there are now many in the U.S. producing Greek pastries. So far NONE can meet the standards, flavor and consistency of Poseidon's. They are a credit to their namesake, to New York City and all immigrant families who have made this country what it is today, despite what our current ignorant President would purport to the population! Very disappointed. For $27 I purchased four pieces of baklava and two pieces of cheese pastry. All were stale and dry. The cheese pastry was under-cooked. The rolled wall-nut baklava had a strange taste and no syrup inside at all. The rolled pistachio baklava was a little better, but only on the outside. I don't know where they get their nuts or how long they keep their pastries out, but nothing was fresh or worth the money. Never again. read more

I've always walked passed this bakery and finally walked in. It was warm and peaceful. The decor was simple yet looked really nice. I tried the apple strudel. It cost me $5 for a little triangle. I was hoping for square for the price, but it was still really good. The pastry was flaky and the filling sweet but not too sweet. I'll be coming back to try more of other strudel and maybe go liitle more adventurous. read more

I discovered their apricot strudel when I lived there in the 80s. I'm in Texas now, and have never found anything as good. When I'm going to visit I call ahead to order 3 lbs. for pickup. Airport security kiddingly wanted to confiscate it b/c it looked so good. If you love apricots, you will thank me for this tip! read more

There aren't a ton of greek bakeries so it's not the most crowded market, though it competes with other Arab and Turkish places that would have baklava and other flaky pastries. Overall, it's good but a bit over the top - the savory pies are a little salty and the desserts really sweet. I had the spinach, meat, and cheese pies. They were all good, the dough was very flaky and rich. It was a bit salty, but overall good. The desserts are similarly crunchy but a bit heavy and extremely sweet. The galaktoboureko is interesting but the cheese can feel a bit heavy. The pistachio afali was probably my favorite. And with quality comes the cost. I know it's a smaller mom and pop shop with really good food, which means while I would love to eat here a lot more, I know it's going to be a bit of a luxury. But that is also the best part about the place - it's small, the food is good, yes it's a bit pricey but it feels like it's part of a community and eating there makes you feel like you're a part of it as well. read more

We go to Poseidon Bakery almost every time we're in Hell's Kitchen. You can't find baklava, in my opinion, and all of their strudels are so good that it's hard to pick a favorite. My husband loves the cherry and apricot, and I adore the prune. Their cashew coconut crunch is such a delight that I dare not buy it often. All of their cookies are excellent, and I especially love Christmas when their lace cookies are available. The halvah is good, too. We seldom buy the savory items, but everything we've had is truly scrumptious. I can't recommend Poseidon highly enough, and would've written a review earlier had I known it was available - only found this because we were looking up a phone number for an adjacent business! Oh, one more thing - the customer service is so good that it's almost worth going in just to say hello once you've been in a time or two. We've been going for years and will be stopping in for goodies today. This is a must when you're in the neighborhood! read more
