I'm not sure when Thanksgiving Eve became a holiday, but I swear everywhere was closing early that day. When it is Thanksgiving Eve though, I want to meet up with those I have the rare chance to see. My friend who was on her way through town had her dog with her. My sister was also in town and sadly she's still 20yrs old until February. Long story as short as possible, we needed to go somewhere extremely close to where I live and to where above friend had been before (directionally inept). Posse was our 3rd stop on that repeatedly disappointing Thanksgiving Eve, and they delivered. While they don't actually serve wine, they did have Mike's Hard Lemonade, which sufficed for my non-beer drinking friend. And the QUESO! I actually come by Posse at least a couple times a month for Happy Hour, main reason being the queso. It's in my top 5. And after that TE experience, Posse gets 5 stars. read more

Whoops- It is two blocks further down the road and not hidden inside Posse East. This is a normal beer and rail drink divey sports bar with large covered patio and tons of TV screens. It's a game day location and also fun for trivia night that I stumbled upon. Tap list had a few interesting local beers, but the only thing worth drinking was Austin Pearl Snap, which seems to be ubiquitous. So not too impressive. They didn't have tasters of course, but grudgingly let me try a splash of an unknown pale lager. read more

This place is a UT staple. They have a pretty decent happy hour with $6.75 pitchers of domestic and $8.75 pitchers of imports. The food selection here is also pretty good compared to near-by Crown and Anchor. I'm not saying that the food hear is better, but they do have a wider selection. The outside area is littered with benches, tables, and chairs that lead out to an outer porch. Their is one big screen tv, a flat panel, and tube so you can catch the big games. There are also tv's in the inside sitting area with a few tables and chairs. After a hard day, Posse East is a good place to kick back and relax. read more

Great locations for any engineering student looking for a beer between classes, love it! I eat lunch here probably every other week and come after all my exams to celebrate, it's a great bar with a chill atmosphere. The burgers and fries are delicious, no complaints there for sure. Good beer selection on tap, they have a library inside which I've never taken advantage of, but it's an interesting concept. Love this bar! read more

For a place to stop by for lunch while working at UT, this place is surprisingly good. The mini library they have (which was an unexpected surprise) is nice for browsing. Their sandwiches are top notch, and their fajitas are remarkable. For a spot to go to for lunch, this is quite good as a break from the usual campus eateries, and the people working the bar are friendly and knowledgeable, and have a true passion for college sports. read more

Great place to hangout before the game. The atmosphere here is very lively. The food is is not all that great, very oily, soggy and there is tons of cheese on everything, may be their oil is not hot enough. This place is a total sports/college bar and hangout. I have seen folks 'studying' here, though I can't ever amagine getting any work done in that kind of atmosphere. Pitchers are reasonably priced, and the outdoor area is great for game days. It is very much a pre/post-game hangout for college football games, especially due to the big-screen TV that they have on the porch. Monday Night Football also garners a bit of a croud, though much less than UT football games. The food is decent, but it's not really the reason that you would go here. read more

Too warm inside, only 3 covered outside tables with the signs are non-smoking, "the rest are cool", as per an employee. I didn't want to get interrupted from my food, so, I just left without ordering. I'd be happy to come back if a smoke free environment was more of a thing here. read more

The food was average. Nothing special. The atmosphere was casual! More of a frat bar/grill.. If you're looking to go have some cold beer and have conversation it is the place! Relaxed, close to campus college vibe.. If you're looking for good food then keep looking. It's just O K. read more

Cheap greasy food. My taco and chalupa was also a bit too salty. On a second visit, I opted for burger and fries. Nothing special about the burger. It's a small step above fast food burger, at least. Not sure how to describe it. It tasted more.. 'beefy'. I did enjoy the fries though. Nice and crunchy, with a bit of seasoning so that it's not completely bland. Still, it's not an extraordinary burger place, and I have to say that their 'mexican' food quality really drags it down for me. If you're a student, seems like a good place to hang out for cheap food and beer while you watch the games. For visitors, though, skip this one and go to Sao Paulo's. read more

Another kickass place within walking distance of my place. Great burgers here and a great portion of delicious fries. They call out names over an intercom for your food, I find that pretty cool actually. There are no over dressed yuppies here either so big plus. Definitely one of my fav local spots. $11.46 for a bacon cheeseburger & fries? At a student joint, too...C'mon! Also, they soaked the bottom bun with pickle juice that it fell apart when I lifted it. I had to eat the "not too horrible" thing upside down. I should also point out the not only wilted, but beginning-to-decompose lettuce on the burger. Again: c'mon! I'm tolerant, but this all borders on The Posse being a crap joint to warn you all to stay away from. I used to love the unpretentious nature of The Posse, but yesterday the burly owner seemed surly and the young woman at the counter was barely containing her ennui (though she probably brags that she works there). I've enjoyed cheap beers there for 20 years. This was the first time I'd eaten there, however. It will certainly be the last. One block away, the Crown & Anchor offers the same, only better. Sorry to have to give a not so favorable review to this classic UT Austin hang out. I love this place. But, today, I got rotten lettuce on my sandwich. I showed it to the owner and he acted apologetic in his good-ol'-boy style. I explained my experience in food service. I told him that his dress table had apparently not been rotated properly. The lettuce they put on my sandwich was the very pale inner leaves of the romaine head and they had serious brown tips, two or more looked rotten. Many people, including restaurateurs, are not aware how sick a person can get from rotten vegetables or even mishandled or improperly cleaned very fresh vegetables. I really like supporting this place since places like is are getting lost all over Austin. But, damn, shape up already! My suggestion is that you ask for the veggies on the side. Perhaps this is always a good practice. read more

This is my favorite. Chill cheap pitchers of beer and badass fries, hot dogs and burgers to enjoy with friends! I love it all. Plus I can bring my daughter sometimes and she also enjoys the food! Ah memories. I use to live down the street from this place when going to school. Hadnt planned on stopping in but traffic was so bad after the game, its seemed like the perfect place to satisfy our hunger and quench our thirst. This outdoor ice house was busy but not packed. The TVs are small when compared to many modern places but there was plenty of indoor (if you could bare the heat) or outdoor (find fan). I remember that there is only counter service and the menu really hasnt changed much in the last 30 years. I ordered the sheriff $4.95 (italian meats, purple onion, tomato, melted cheese) served on a roll. My son ordered the hamburger and fries. What occurred to me was that the taste was almost exactly the same but the size had inevitable changed to much smaller than what I remember. Both sandwiches were great and the coated fries were crunch. Add a $4 twelve ounc Dos Equis draft and we are all good. Even the drunk "hoss" and his XL size "snookie" date couldnt detract from our enjoyment. One sign of the times was that we saw a woman at the convenience store next door passed out next to the dumpster, with her dress pulled up to her waste and no intimates to be found. No, it wasnt some drunk sorority girl thank goodness but rather a drag wormess who had a little too much junk shot in her arm or gold schlager in her gullet. Austin's finest came on the scene but we didnt stick around long enough to find out what really happened. read more

Posse East is a deserving college/ grad/post college institution on north campus. It takes the "douche" out of near-campus bars and eateries. Great semi outdoor seating and classic food from a grill. Try the posse burger with jalapeños! Along with crown & anchor, you can't have a bad time here. read more
