It's a typical Quarter restaurant with its long gallery seating. We were seated right away. The menu appeared to be heavily vegetarian which was great for my two friends. Many will understand the limited menu options for vegetarians at most places. Wes ordered Tom Kai, Becky the Massaman Jackfruit option and I the one with short rib. It was delicious. It was warm and comforting, full of flavor and the chef made it less spicy for me. What a delight to choose a menu option that I have never had and restaurant that I have never been to. You believe that I'll return for certain. Especially for that gorgeous Mai Tai!

Though pop-up showers were still lingering, my husband and I decided to take a gamble on courtyard dining--and I am so glad we did! Sheltered under the green umbrellas surrounded by historic brick walls, lush greenery, and rain-kissed citrus trees, the atmosphere was incredibly romantic and peaceful. The courtyard's intimate layout even brought a bit of extra magic to our evening. We sat near another wonderful couple (and their adorable daughter) and became fast friends, sharing laughs and conversation throughout the night. What truly anchored the experience, though, was the incredible service. The staff was remarkably personable, helpful, and welcoming. The dinner itself was excellent from start to finish, showcasing immense culinary skill across every dish. We started with the delicious brussels sprouts and a uniquely seasoned spring/summer gumbo that was unlike any version we've had before (oh, what I would give for the recipe). As for the entrées, the shrimp and grits were phenomenal, and the blackened catfish sandwich with a fresh salad was executed flawlessly...and the bread pudding was fantastic, too! The host was extremely welcoming and friendly. Our server and helpers were over quickly to drop off waters and greet us. I ended up ordered the salmon. With it being so early and only one or 2 other tables besides my friend and me, the food did take longer to come out than I expected it to. Both of us did thoroughly enjoy what we got. The salmon was crispy on the outside with a nice sauce over it. We thought we'd have time to get dessert so we ordered a couple but that too took a very long time. We finally waved down our server to cancel and get the check since we had to be somewhere and he apologized and said their WiFi was going in and out so it could be that it was registering on the kitchen side. That may have explained why our entrees took too long. If it wasn't for the service and the food being great - I would not be thrilled about timing. We got there around 5:30p and had to leave by 7:15p so an almost 2 hours experience that probably could have been 1 hour.

We arrived at the place 11 minutes before our reservation time of 5pm. Since my daughter works in the restaurant industry, as a politeness, we didn't go inside until 4:59pm even though one of the workers came to the door and unlocked it at 4:51pm. Once inside he knew we were the 5pm reservation. He was polite but somehow his whole demeanor lacked friendliness. Menu: Even though the drink menu was an actual physical one, the food menu is online. How strange. After scanning the QR code, we were hoping to see a good selection of food items. But to our surprise, the food menu is/was very small. Actually this place's main thing is nothing but "omakase" where if you choose to order from the a la cart section, the choices are so limited (we were here in town from Denver, CO. After eating some deep-fried stuff for the last few days, we felt that we were truly healthy food or salad depleted; just to clarify, we didn't show up to to this restaurant just to eat salad because after all, this is a sushi restaurant. We love sushi. And yet we were hoping for some decently sized salad. Unfortunately none is/was found on the menu. All the nirigis tasted fresh but I didn't care for the sweet sauce (mainly used for unagi/eel) on the salmon nigiri. Why?? I've never had a salmon nigiri prepared this way.) The only item that was impressive was the oyster tarter (not on the menu as this was the replacement item for the lobster tarter.) This was excellent where we could have easily ordered another one but at this point, we didn't want to spend anymore $$ as all items on the menu are not cheap here. We are a fan of yuzu. The only dessert item (once again, there is only one dessert on the menu) is yuzu tart or something like that. One of the sushi chefs informed us though that the online menu hadn't been quite updated for this so he said it would be a yuzu sponge cake type thing. We decided to give it a try. This, however, failed to impress us either as it was a very much average sponge cake, nothing more at all. We didn't order any drinks besides the water so the final bill was about $75 with some change. Well, tonight's overall experience of ours didn't justify this amount in any way possible. There was another sushi restaurant that had the similar ratings with similar location (when we searched it yesterday.) Maybe we should have chosen that one instead. Disappointed....

There are three choices (the online men points out there is a vegetarian option that is off menu). We had the black garlic and pork tonkatsu and both were fabulous. When the bill arrived, I noticed I had been charged extra for the broccoli and also charged for shrimp--even though shrimp was already the protein included in the menu item I ordered. I politely questioned the charge, and the explanation I received didn't seem to match what was stated on the menu. I then asked to speak with a manager so the issue could be addressed. After quite a bit of discussion in the kitchen, the server returned, but instead of a manager coming out, I was given essentially the same explanation we had already discussed. I calmly explained why the charges didn't make sense and expressed that I was unhappy with how the situation was being handled. Unfortunately, there seemed to be little interest in resolving the concern or retaining my business. The food is fine, but my advice is to carefully review your bill before paying. Based on my experience, management does not appear particularly concerned when customers raise billing issues.

What a great time and it was so good to see Miss Shirley again after all these years.

I think if we had received chop sticks I would have enjoyed eating them more but having to use the fork was awkward. The sauteed tofu was the best thing I've ever had at a Chinese restaurant, I've been thinking about it frequently over the last 24 hours. Even if you aren't vegetarian and if you've never had tofu before but been curious - you have to start there. Or actually don't because no tofu will ever compare haha! From my non-vegetarian dining partners: the xiaolongbao that came on the mini swings was yummy, the crab meat shu mai could be skipped, the chicken was delicious, the fried shrimp balls are a must have, and the gyoza was good. The combination of different meats blend perfectly and the olive spread complements, not overwhelms. Plus I love the side pickles! You order at the front counter and then take a table inside or out (or at the bar). Food is delivered promptly and the servers are always checking on your drinks. Really excellent ice tea by the way. Can be chaos but hey it's comforting even when it's loud. And there are no TVs, thank God.

My server Chris was friendly and informative, helping me navigate the menu and their daily specials. The gumbo I chose was amazing. I ordered a bowl, and I wish I had the whole pot. The restaurant of the menu sounded pretty amazing too.

We asked to sit in the courtyard but were told we couldn't because they didn't have enough staff the night we were there (last Saturday night). So they seated us against the far wall near the kitchen door where large numbers of staff loitered all night when they weren't serving the 5 occupied tables in the main room. Our server was all rapid shtick, quite difficult to understand, beginning as we were taking our seats. He repeated over and over that he could offer us foods that weren't on the menu, namely crab cakes, suggesting that we take his recommendations because he wouldn't steer us wrong. He hardly gave us any time to look at the menu before returning with the same rapid-fire shtick, to the point where I actually had to ask him to please give us a few minutes because I was having trouble thinking! Assuming that the crab cakes he was offering were specials (he never used that word, and we were never offered any other specials if there were any), 3 members of our party including myself opted for crab cakes as an app. A few minutes after ordering our server came back, suggesting a "deal" for 2 of us (I thought) to share the crab cake entree instead of the apps because then we could all share a side. Because he seemed to know what he was talking about, we agreed and ordered the corn side. Several minutes later he returned to our table with a plate (obviously not cooked to order) containing 2 crab cakes plus one extra plate and a bowl of the corn side. Another in our party got the chicken andouille gumbo app. Our 4th received nothing. Trying to figure out what to do, my husband said "I think he expects us to divide it 3 ways" which would have been ok except there was only 1 extra plate. When we called our server back, it turned out that in all of his banter and shtick and deals he had completely missed part of the order. He said he would bring another app but never did. I ended up sharing a few bites of crab cake from my husband's plate. And then to top everything, the entrees were brought to the table before the apps were finished or cleared - always one of my biggest pet peeves, exemplifying a complete disregard of basic restaurant timing. As far as the food was concerned, the crab cakes were mushy and appeared to be mostly bread with no obvious crab meat. The sauce was flavorful, slightly elevating the dish but really doing nothing to overcome the shortcomings. The chicken andouille gumbo (ordered as an appetizer as well as an entree) was tasty but almost completely lacking in any texture (other than the added rice) including very limited amounts of (very small) andouille pieces and no chicken to be found. The Creole combination platter was interesting but with all 3 dishes combined on one plate without any dividers the dishes were difficult to distinguish. Overall an incredibly disappointing meal! I'm not sure if management is encouraging our server's "act" to attract tourists, but that combined with the poor food nearly ruined our last night in New Orleans. We've been recommending Gumbo Shop to our traveling friends and family for the last quarter century. Sadly we will not be recommending it anymore.
