BLTA sandwich (only available for a limited time)
    Susan H.

One thing I want to make clear about this updated review --- My experience happened just before all COVID-19 hell broke loose. If what happened to us had happened in the present, I would have cut them a lot of slack due to the fact that these are very stressful times for us all---especially for those who deal with the public on a daily basis. We were here on a Sunday in the beginning of March. I stopped in to get 2 sandwiches to go. We were interested in trying the BLTA (bacon, lettuce, tomato, avocado) as it was only going to be around for a limited time. The place wasn't busy at all. I walked up to the counter and told the sandwich maker that I wanted 2 BLTAs on white bread to go. He asked me to repeat my order 3 times---and he still screwed it up. One thing I've never liked about Potbelly is that their sandwich making process is opaque. At other places, like Jersey Mike's and Subway you are able to watch your sandwich being made from start to finish. At Potbelly you can't see a thing and just have to trust that it is being made properly. If we were eating it there, we would have caught the mistake and brought it to their attention. Instead, we didn't discover it until we got home. One of the sandwiches had no bacon on it at all. Seriously, there was no excuse for that, especially when that sandwich costs more than the others on their menu. I looked at the receipt and they had a website where you could fill out a survey and get a free cookie at a later visit. I did the survey with the hope of giving them feedback. The website is "potbellylistens". Yeah, right. I explained what happened. The survey asked if we wanted them to call us about our experience. I filled in the info. Never did anyone call. Considering we were still in "normal times", that was inexcusable. As I said, if something like that happened during these fraught times, I would have let it go. In the future, when life goes back to normal, we expect we'll go to a Potbelly when our grandkids visit. After we took them here once, it then turned out that they really like it and now want to eat here when they're in town. We will just avoid this particular one and always be sure to dine in so that we can catch any mistakes that may happen.

    Meatball Sandwich

We don't have Potbelly Sandwich Shops in Georgia so I wanted to try them out while I was in town. As the name suggests, they specialize in sub sandwiches--toasted and made to order--along with soups, salads, milkshakes, Zapp's potato chips and cookies. I took it as a good sign that the line was almost out the door. During the lunch rush, an employee used a tablet to take orders from people way back in the line. I appreciated that efficiency. There were at least fifteen people ahead of me but I wasn't in line more than six or seven minutes. I ordered the original Meatball Sandwich with marinara and provolone. The bread was gloriously crisp with no jagged edges to Cap'N Crunch cut the roof of my mouth. Unfortunately, there were too many gristles in the meatballs. For a sandwich that good looking and that tasty to have so much gristle was so wrong. Two stars for the gristly sandwich with a third star for the cookies. They were fresh baked and since my table was painted Cookie Monster blue, the kid in me enjoyed them that much more. My first visit wasn't everything I'd hoped for but any chain selling Zapp's with their subs can't be dismissed that easily in my heart. I would be willing to give Potbelly's another shot but I'd try a different sandwich next time.

I put in a take out early, and by the time I got there, it was bagged and ready! It was a Sunday at 7:15 am, so it wasn't really too busy yet. There was also a running race going on and not much parking (pretty sure that's a one off though) so that could've contributed to the quiet morning as well. The bagels were delicious. I got a cinnamon raisin bagel with plain cream cheese. It was perfect. We also tried the mountain view (potato latke, egg, cheese, and avocado) sandwich and the bacon Sun city (bacon, egg, cheese, and hot honey) sandwich. Both were delicious. Bagel sandwiches are a little messy to eat and they don't skimp on any ingredients either the avocado was great. My husband really enjoyed his everything bagel with plain cream cheese. Honestly though, the stars are their Strawberry B&W Oreo cookie and chocolate babka muffin. I wanted to try the cinnamon raisin babka muffin but it wasn't avaliable at the time. The strawberry oreo cookie is the perfect amount of sweetness with the strawberry icing and then the darker chocolate side. Their strawberry icing is absolutely perfect. I don't think I've had a better strawberry glaze. It's sweet, good amount of strawberry flavor and the perfect balance of artificial strawberry flavor where you can't tell and it's just naturally strawberry enough. I wish they made a cookie where it's fully strawberry glazed. The chocolate babka muffin (I got warmed) is the perfect size. So much chocolate. And a dark chocolate so it's not in your face sweet. I loved them both so much, I made my husband get two of each the next weekend. Come for the bagels, but stay for the baked goods.

I don't know why but I just dislike toasted bagels with seeds on it. It tastes bitter and crunchy to me in ways I find it dwarfing all the other flavors of the sandwich. I also tried out their babka muffin. I appreciated the bitterness of the chocolate and the crunchy texture it had. Love how it wasn't too sweet. Would definitely order it again as it was airy and not too heavy. Lastly, the inside of the store is brightly decorated with ample seatings available. The service was prompt and parking easily found across the entrance.

In part, that was us not quite able to figure out exactly where it was. Grant Street, it turns out, is disjointed. In other words, it's not like it's just a straight shot from one end to the other. We stopped in here on a Saturday around 4 p.m. The place closes at 6 p.m., and are closed on Sunday. At that time of day, they weren't at all busy. The young man at the counter took our orders, and someone working in the back made the sandwiches. We just ordered savory items, so we can't speak to how the sweet items are (although some of them sounded so good). I ordered the salmon sandwich, which consists of: "Choice of your chimney bread, spread with dill cream cheese, filled with smoked Atlantic salmon, spring mix, cucumber, and red onion." The bread choices are everything bagel, jalapeno, and cheesy. I chose the everything bagel and asked for no onion. I found this sandwich to be tasty, but I thought they could have gone lighter with the dill cream cheese. The bread had a nice crispness. My husband ordered the ham and Swiss sandwich, which consists of: "Choice of your chimney bread, spread with paprika mayo and filled with black forest ham, Swiss cheese, fresh romaine hearts, spring mix, sweet pepper, tomato, cucumber, and red onion". He wasn't happy with the paprika mayo, as he says mustard would have worked better. Nor did he care for the sweet peppers. Now he knows not to order the default setting for this sandwich but instead to customize the toppings. They work with DoorDash, which, when ordering online, gives the option to customize one's order. There are high tables, the type that are found in bars, for those who want to eat their sandwiches there. The place is kept very clean.

Drive around if you need to, and you'll eventually find the sign. Should you go through all that trouble to find the place? Umm, yes, because the sub I had here was really tasty and gave me a homey feel. It's family-run, and the staff was very friendly. If you are out of ideas for lunch and nearby, consider trying the subs at this place. You won't regret it. The thick double plastic bags are overkill, though. I wish they would use paper wraps and paper bags instead. Something to improve upon.

We both ended up liking this sub so much that we've now had it two more times. This sub consists of: "capicola, mortadella, pepperoni, Genoa salami, lettuce, tomato and provolone cheese." We got them with oil and vinegar and a sprinkling of salt and pepper. The second time we ordered 2 subs using Doordash. These subs came with the default toppings which are mayonnaise, onions and hot peppers. We both agreed that we prefer them with just the oil and vinegar plus salt and pepper. These subs are the best we've had. The bread is soft and fresh plus the family who owns the place knows how to assemble a sub so that everything is packed in well, thus making it easier to eat. All the ingredients are fresh and flavorful. The family who runs it is very friendly. We were pleasantly surprised when we went there recently, since we were in the area, and decided to buy 2 subs to go, that the lady who waited on us when we first went there, remembered us! The one drawback---They are located in an office park. Thus their business hours correspond to regular work hours. On Thursday and Friday, they do stay open until 6 p.m. They are closed on the weekends. So...basically, it's a hidden gem. If you like subs, it's worth a visit or an order on Doordash. And, yes, we will be back!
