Where is the James Beard Foundation?…read more From the minute you set foot inside, it feels like you're coming home. From start to finish *everyone* fusses over you. Most of their business is take away, but you can and really should eat in at least once. Nothing about this place is stuffy. This is soul food at it's absolute best. The depth of flavour is extraordinary. If you are looking for horrible greasy stuff that masquerades as soul food, you will be sorely disappointed. There is love in every serving. I've been lucky enough to try the whole snapper. It was only $40 for a fish that was easily big enough to feed 3 people, and I am not small! This fish had zero chance of fitting in the to go container. Its head and tail were flopping all over the place. Much more importantly it was incredible. The stew was fantastically deep. The root vegetables were soft but not over cooked. It is served head on, bones in, like it should be. The fried version is not greasy and the batter stays in place. Have I mentioned the collards? The pot liquor. OM NOM NOM. These folks will have you asking for seconds on vegetables. The first time I had their mac and cheese, it was good. Tonight's was off the chain. If you want a bigger portion of this, you are clearly a monster. They seem to have gone cake rather than cobbler, and it does not disappoint. We were in on Juneteenth, too. It was obvious then that we would come back, and it was hands down the right decision. If they are out of something, it is not unusual. That is because it is THAT FREAKING GOOD. This is food you could happily stand in line for in the heat for several hours. It takes as long as it takes, but on neither visit did it take too long at all. The car park is ample, which is a relief. They have both steps and a ramp. There is a tiny bit of a rough transition to get inside, but it shouldn't be a nightmare for folks with a mobility impairment. There is more than sufficient distance between tables so that everyone can be seated comfortably. It is immaculate in terms of cleanliness. Nicer than that is none of the staff attempt to clean while customers are enjoying their meals. Most single people will find the side orders more than sufficient. Overall, this is easily five stars. I felt guilty reviewing Rainey's since I don't want a stampede of out of towners heading for their door. But in truth, it's a destination restaurant. Support these folks they deserve it!

However, it isn't the brown stew chicken you'd expect. It almost has a Smokey BBQ undertone to it that I feel doesn't give you stewed chicken. Other than that, I enjoyed it.

I was pretty stoked b/c he had been bragging about it for years. Went here with high expectations and the wings we got were drowning in sauce and just not great texture. I can't place it but they were on par with the chain style wing places. When we dug into it a bit more, the original owners of the place sold it. It's unfortunate because the sauce itself was good. You can tell that there is/was something there. Now why the 1? I had to go to the bathroom... and they didn't put up a closed sign (should've) or had a plumber fix the issue. What I saw in that bathroom will be forever imprinted in my mind. I won't get super graphic - I'll just say that it made port-o-potties look like a 5-star hotel in comparison. I will never, ever go back here. There's the saying about a kitchen cleanliness in comparison to the bathroom. These new owners are gonna tank this place fast if they can't find the rhythm. The menu has a lot of options that all sound good. I couldn't decide between the fried shrimp,…read morefried chicken, fried pork chops, liver, or turkey wings, so I asked the waiter which item was most popular. She recommended the turkey wings, so I went with that. I like my turkey wings well done and nicely browned, and I specifically requested the brownest ones in the batch. She told me they had just come out and were well done. When I got home, only the top wing was browned--the one underneath wasn't--which was frustrating since I made a very specific request. She also seemed to have a slight attitude about the request, which didn't help. The turkey wings themselves were just okay. The cabbage could've used more seasoning, but the white rice and gravy were good. Unfortunately, the cornbread that was supposed to come with the meal was missing. I would try this place again, but I'd likely order one of the other items I was interested in--not the turkey wings.

I am writing to formally express my dissatisfaction with my recent experience at Southern Comfort…read moreRestaurant and Lounge in Norfolk, Virginia. I placed a takeout order and experienced an unacceptable wait time of over one hour with very little communication regarding the status of my food. Throughout the wait, I received no meaningful updates from the server, despite being one of the last customers remaining in the restaurant. The server appeared to be the only employee handling customers and moved very slowly, which further contributed to the delay. While waiting, I observed several concerning issues that reflected poorly on the restaurant's professionalism and food service standards. Kitchen staff were openly arguing and using inappropriate language, including profanity, within earshot of customers. This behavior created an uncomfortable environment and was highly unprofessional. Additionally, I observed staff members walking around while wearing gloves and touching various surfaces and items before handling food. This raised concerns regarding proper food safety and sanitation practices. After waiting more than an hour, I finally received my order only to discover that the food was cold and one of the items I paid for was missing entirely. Despite the lengthy delay, poor service, and missing item, no apology was offered by any member of the staff. I ultimately left the restaurant with an $87 bill and a completely unsatisfactory experience. As a paying customer, I expected better communication, professionalism, food quality, and customer service. Unfortunately, none of these expectations were met. I am requesting that management review this incident and provide an appropriate response regarding the concerns outlined above. I would also appreciate consideration of a refund, credit, or other resolution given the significant issues with my order and overall experience. Thank you for your attention to this matter. I look forward to hearing from you regarding how this complaint will be addressed.

I actually met one of the owners while shopping at Games Farmers Market in Newport News. She spoke so passionately about her restaurant being a soul food spot that I knew I had to try it. I went within the week, and they don't open until after 3 p.m. (I believe they stay open until 1 or 2 in the morning). They even have extra parking across the street, which is nice. I went in by myself, and they told me I could sit wherever I wanted. Since I was one of the first people in there that day, the bartender/waitress greeted me with so much kindness. She went over some of the specials, and I ended up ordering the Rasta Pasta along with a drink--a Pineapple Upside Down (tea or lemonade, I can't quite remember). Whatever it was, it was delicioso. That drink was a 10/10--I'd go back just for that! When the pasta came out, it was served with garlic toast, and I also ordered some macaroni and cheese. The pasta was flavorful, and honestly, I've been thinking about going back for it again. The mac and cheese wasn't my favorite, but to be fair, I prefer baked, homemade macaroni & cheese--so that's just me, but it was good. While I was there, I chatted with several of the owners and the cook, and everyone was so friendly and welcoming. I even learned one of the owners is a veteran. The restaurant has a sports bar vibe, with TVs everywhere, music playing, and a DJ--it's lively, clean, and has a great atmosphere. I really love the vibe, the people, and how comfortable they made me feel. I'll definitely be back. If you're looking for good food, good people, and a good atmosphere, I'd say give George's a try--you might end up loving it like I did.
