George's Restaurant is on Mercury Boulevard in Hampton, right across from Food Lion and Popeye's, near North King Street--right beside where the old McDonald's used to be. I actually met one of the owners while shopping at Games Farmers Market in Newport News. She spoke so passionately about her restaurant being a soul food spot that I knew I had to try it. I went within the week, and they don't open until after 3 p.m. (I believe they stay open until 1 or 2 in the morning). They even have extra parking across the street, which is nice. I went in by myself, and they told me I could sit wherever I wanted. Since I was one of the first people in there that day, the bartender/waitress greeted me with so much kindness. She went over some of the specials, and I ended up ordering the Rasta Pasta along with a drink--a Pineapple Upside Down (tea or lemonade, I can't quite remember). Whatever it was, it was delicioso. That drink was a 10/10--I'd go back just for that! When the pasta came out, it was served with garlic toast, and I also ordered some macaroni and cheese. The pasta was flavorful, and honestly, I've been thinking about going back for it again. The mac and cheese wasn't my favorite, but to be fair, I prefer baked, homemade macaroni & cheese--so that's just me, but it was good. While I was there, I chatted with several of the owners and the cook, and everyone was so friendly and welcoming. I even learned one of the owners is a veteran. The restaurant has a sports bar vibe, with TVs everywhere, music playing, and a DJ--it's lively, clean, and has a great atmosphere. I really love the vibe, the people, and how comfortable they made me feel. I'll definitely be back. If you're looking for good food, good people, and a good atmosphere, I'd say give George's a try--you might end up loving it like I did. read more

Me and Wife Unit were discussing where to go for lunch and I remembered a recommendation to try George out from about a year ago. We looked it up on Yelp... great reviews and the Rasta Pasta looked intriguing. The location is one of those things that reinforces the idea of this place being a neighborhood spot. Visible from Mercury but located in that weird nexus of side and backroads that makes things at that King Street crossing an expedition. Walking in, you immediately know this is a "grown folks" establishment. A cool sophistication to all of the design choices. We went midday on a Sunday but the place echoes with its nightclub vibes. We were greeted immediately and directed to sit wherever we liked. The dark table had an artsy pattern with flecks of glittering spots underneath the glaze. Wife Unit approved. Service was prompt and friendly with multiple staff checking in on us. It's that willingness to engage with customers that makes it clear we're not an inconvenience to the staff. Too many establishments have lost track of that. Here, it was a genuine vibe. Wife Unit and I ordered the same things so only limited sampling from the menu this time. The crab ball appetizers were very good. Breaded perfectly and ample amounts of crab. The side Caesar salad was good. Nothing particularly out of pocket about it but I guess that's the universal appeal of it. The Rasta Pasta was très magnifique! I had the chicken add in but I imagine the shrimp or salmon would have been equally tasty. Seasoned perfectly and the sauce was so rich and creamy. George is a new Black Own business in Hampton. It is a Restaurant and Lounge, which means they have a subtle atmosphere during the day and a club environment at night. So keep that in mind and choose wisely when coming here. We came here late when the night activities were beginning. I'll say you have to speak very loudly. The music is at club level after 8 with a live DJ. And that's cool if that is what you are here for, but otherwise, try to get here early. So, on arrival, we came to the hostess to be seated. She was engaged in the music because she didn't know we were there until she finally turned around and saw us. I told her we wanted a table for two, and she casually waved her hand for us to sit anywhere we liked. We chose to sit as far away from the live DJ as we could cause, again, it was deafening in there. The environment is for a younger crowd, but it is suitable for take-out and DoorDash orders The place had a large bar area that took up a third of the restaurant; a stage took up a good portion of karaoke night, and the rest was tables scattered around the stage. We sat by the window and noticed that the window seal was loaded with dead flies. Those pests annoyed us throughout our stay. Our server was amazing. She was a young lady who went to Pheobus High School and college locally. She took our drink orders, explained the menu items, and was very attentive to us. Now, what do you need to know? It's a lounge, which means it has a nightclub feel in the evenings. The food is good despite the old crab sandwich, which they gladly changed for a fresh burger and fries. The fries are fantastic. Other menu items have a homemade hometown feel, so it's safe to say the food is good. Just be aware that this lounge has a young crowd and loud music. I may be back, but it won't be a priority. George! As a 757 native, I am proud that this place exists. I learned about George restaurant from one of my aunts. It's situated in a place that is both highly visible and in the cut; even though you can see the sign from Mercury Boulevard, you really have to know how to loop around to get in there. And both of these facts signify on what makes this place so special. George really is old-school black Hampton (the city). George was created by local black Baby Boomers. There's a picture of the actual George (RIP) on the wall. And if you didn't know, the Boomers are still booming. The website refers to a time when "Baby Boomers"...referred to each other as Brothers and Sisters...when Love filled the air in the "Age of Aquarius"...[and we had] great thinkers, writers, and musicians..." My cousin invited me out to jazz night at George in October. These musicians play serious jazz, and the band leader even has a jingle for when they invite folks who can play or sing up to jam with them - no smooth jazz, no pop, no R & B, just jazz. Now mind you, that's on jazz night: A friend who is an accomplished R&B singer recently performed a set there as well. On jazz night the band was swinging. When a brotha waiting patiently at our table to be invited up joined in, it was my first time hearing anyone play a pocket trumpet. A little girl was sleeping on a couch during the performance. When she woke up, she got up on the stage. The band members who were sitting out that stanza smiled at her as she bopped, until her mom came and got her. The food? I had a Rasta pasta that was lush and decadent. My food was seasoned, you hear me? The sauce was lush and creamy and well balanced by fresh, crisp slices of bell pepper and onion with the perfect amount of bite. My cousin had a salad with a nicely cooked piece of salmon. I took crab cakes home to my mom. (I had recently had her try crab cakes from 2 different spots in Williamsburg. She said they were ok.) But George's? She asked me to get those again. And I did, later that same month. We both enjoyed them. I went back for a very quiet happy hour on a Friday in December. Four 21 y.o.'s came in and sat at the bar. The girls had on bonnets. One of the guys said, "Bro, I been in here with my mama." I chuckled to myself. A man with newly graying hair came in and sat at the bar too. All ages, all chilling. I had a glass of Chardonnay, some delicious wings and crispy fries. I asked for the remoulade sauce I'd had last time on the side. It was so good, I ordered the same thing to go. Before I left, the waitress chided me for wiping the table after myself, because that was her job, baby. We laughed. At George, you will be seen. George represents our gathering as a *work* that continues, as we must, and have always, with a "renewed spirt, yet with the sensibilities of today." I'm feeling that. Visited to celebrate three generation of birthdays and had such a good time. We visited on a Friday during happy hour so decided to try multiple appetizers. We got the wings & fries, veggie dumplings, chicken bites and fish bites. We sampled the fried zucchini and all of the food was good! We had a very large group and I think the waitresses did the best they could with such a large crowd. Now let's talk about the Dj and vibe on a Friday night. From the time we walked in we danced in our seats and some even hit the dance floor! The Dj is amazing and makes the restaurant a great time for a Friday night! It looks like it's closed from the outside, don't be fooled, it is open and worth you opening the door. We were greeted with a smile and could be seated anywhere. The food had a good presentation and was nice and hot. I ordered seared salmon with 2 sides and my hubby had chicken and waffles. Every item on the plates were delectable with there own flavor. Had a wonderful dinner here last week with my wife. Ambiance is nice, very friendly staff, good food reasonably priced. My wife had the crab cakes that were filled with plenty of crab meat, not stuffing. I had the Rigatoni with butterfly shrimp in a cream source that was delicious and spicy just enough so not to burn. Plus, even with the large butterfly shrimp, there were plenty of individual ones in the dish. I have been to George's four times since it's opening. It is nice to have a local restaurant in the area that serves great comfort food! They serve amazing appetizers. So far I have had the sliders, the cheese steak egg rolls and three varieties of their chicken wings. The Rasta pasta is amazing! I've also tried the collards and the Mac and cheese. If you like sweet tea, you're going to love George's recipe infused with herbs and spices! The restaurant is huge and also has plans for live performances as well as a cigar lounge coming this summer. Please support our local restaurants, they are an integral component to our community. I was excited to try the Jasper Tea. It was really good. Unfortunately, I am writing this 40 minutes after we ordered, and we still don't have anything but our beverages. When we arrived, there was a partial group and 1 couple already seated and waiting for food. The food finally arrived. Honestly, it wasn't anything special. Not bad, but nothing to rave about. The burger was overcooked. The fries were prepacked frozen style. Mine was Chicken & waffles. Server frogot the butter & whip cream. She did stop by to tell me the strawberry topping that was on the menu was unavailable. ( We arrived 30 minutes after they opened.) I received chicken strips with waffles. Just chicken strips and waffles. It's definitely set up as a nightclub style venue, so perhaps it's better after dark. The music was too loud. My server could barely hear me. A friend and I meet for Lunch at George of Hampton. Ambiance--The restaurant was clean with a nice amount of space to move about. I would have preferred a little more lighting for lunchtime meal. The Service was top notch. We were warmly greeted at the door and promptly seated. Our server was friendly. We took her up on a few suggested popular menu items. The Food--was Amazing:) Excellent presentation and appealing to the eye. The aroma of each dish before us was heavenly. Definitely recommend the Maryland Crab Cakes with remoulade and asparagus on the side. It was a nice surprise to learn that the additional Crab Cake on my plate was on the house. I ordered (1) Maryland Crab Cake with House Salad and Asparagus for sides. I wished I could have bottled the remoulade (creamy/ flavorful yet not overpowering) and taken some home. The crab cakes were full of lump crab meat, nicely seasoned. I loved that they did not skimp on the seasoned asparagus. I was pleasantly surprised at the color-filled generously portioned Rasta Pasta on my friend's plate. It looked scrumptious. I returned weeks later on a Saturday and it was bad the server was slow nice but slow and the food was way poorer quality that before. I Love exploring new restaurants and when it's a SOUL food restaurant I start to salivate. They have the typical "soul" menu ...a little heavy on the seafood. We went on a Sunday which I advise against because they don't have a full menu on Sundays. We ordered the fish with collard greens and macaroni. The greens were delicious!! The decor is much too dark for my taste. They were probably trying to create an intimate setting. Falled miserably. It wasn't crowded but we were given the wrong menu. They have a separate menu for Sundays. So we had to order twice. Our waitress materialized every 10-12 minutes. Had to send word to her by a co-worker that we were ready to order...for a second time. Cleanliness may be an issue. We sat at the bar and could see that it was wiped with a dirty cloth. They lose a star because of poor customer service. The wait staff had gathered at the other end of the bar. Talking about a coworker. Couldn't be bothered by customers and food took over 20 minutes. The restaurant only had 8 customers. They lose another star for parking. You have to park in the back across the street. Despite all of this, I will still go back. The food, when it finally arrive, is worth the wait. read more

This was my second time coming here, the last time was about 2 months ago for Karaoke. I came on a friday night to check out the vibe and to get a meal. When I walked in, I sat at a high-top table and was soon greeted by my waiter, Jin, and his trainee. Jin greeted me with a smile and explained the menu to me, along w his trainee. I ordered the "Beyond Burger", once I ordered, he repeated back to me my order and asked if I wanted cheese, my response was "no" (lactose intolerant), he then told the trainee to always repeat back what the customer orders so as not to get the order wrong. Once I got my "Beyond Burger" I was pleasantly surprised. I've had plant-based burgers before., but they were nothing to write home about. But this "Beyond Burger" was fabulous! It tasted like beef and had the texture of beef. The burger included lettuce, tomato and onions. Everything was fresh!! The fries were great also. While eating, I ran out of ketchup, and Jin was nearby to bring more ketchup. All in all, the food was very good, Jin was very attentive, customers were friendly, just a nice chill vibe w no drama.
