Pizza with Italian sausage and mushroom was delicious. We came here after an orienteering event where we could get a large pizza for $9 (with $1 per topping). If it weren't for that deal, it'd cost $17+, and honestly, while that pizza was good, I don't think it's worth the normal price of $17+. Plus, other pizzas were disappointing. One person got spinach and ricotta cheese, but you could barely taste the ricotta cheese -- it didn't even taste like ricotta (it wasn't light and creamy like other ricotta I've had, but rather, it was tasteless and doughy like mozzarella, blehhh). Another person got tomato and lettuce (apparently it's called "Mexican pizza"), and she said it wasn't very good. I'd give 4 stars for my sausage/mushroom pizza, but other pizzas weren't impressive. Boy, I really hate to do this. Really I do. The kid who waited on me was so efficient and provided such great service but this was the worst pizza I have had in this city. That is saying a lot b/c there is a lot of really bad pizza in DC. At first I just thought it was not great but by the end of the evening it hit me.."This is the worst pizza I have ever had!" The crust was puffy like a store bought Boboli crust but the killer was the sauce. It was sweet and thickish and just awful. It was the kind of pizza sauce that tastes like canned pasta sauce. My companion felt exactly the same way about his (we both gave it two stars out of ten) and he called it pizza soup; his crust was swimming so badly in sauce that when he picked up his slice all the cheese and such fell off and just left a doughy skin flap behind. Wow... after seeing all these 2 and 3 star reviews, I have become convinced that people down here have become so used to "pizza-type product" that when they come across something that has the taste, zest, and aesthetic feel of an authentic NYC slice, the flavor overwhelms their taste buds and causes their bodies to go into shock. The only known cure for this conniption episode is to write a poor review of what I consider to be the best-tasting pizza I've come across in the District (and the DC city limits). The crust is crispy, the cheese is plentiful, the sauce is scrumtrilescent... sure, it's nowhere near as large as the city slices I was used to growing up (8 inches per slice compared to about 12 inches per slice in NY) but its taste definitely makes up for it. Two friends were in town for the Fourth of July and last year we had ordered Angelico's pizza from Tenleytown because it was cheap and close-by. The fact that we are still friends today after I subjected them to sauce-covered cardboard is a more testament to our friendship than anything. This year, after coming across this pizza place during a staff-building activity, I brought them to Potomac. Between the four of us - my girlfriend was there at the time - we devoured almost three whole pies. What's more... because my friends had ordered a 4-cheese pizza and the waiter brought us out a regular, he had the kitchen whip up a 4-cheese free of charge which we later brought to the party. The free pizza we got? Yeah, we were lauded as heroes and given the key to the city. Pitchers of coke and sprite for the kids, pitchers of foaming Sam Adams for the parents, what's not to like. 3. First impressions means a lot and when my co-worker told me this place was great (he mostly does take out) and I took this as an opportunity to try it out for lunch with my family and some coworkers on 26FEB14. However, it was all but great =l So the three issues I had with the place: 1) We ordered the veggie pizza (mushrooms, broccoli, and tomoatoes). Although we received the pizza within a reasonable amount of time the pizza crust was SOGGY and not enjoyable (from what my co worker said, they probably didn't cook it long enough). 2) When I got the check I still had a pizza on my plate (still hungry) and as I was getting my credit card to stick into the black book where the receipt is the waiter took my plate (I was also talking to my daughter who was next to me and didn't notice). As soon as the waiter left I said to the group "Did someone take my plate?" and they all said yes. The waiter came back and said "Did I take something I wasn't supposed to take?" and I said yes and he chuckled and said he was on a roll taking the plates (other plates on the table), no apology or remedy HE just chuckled. To me that's poor customer service to not even apologize. 3) Then soon after THAT, another guy takes the black book with my credit card and swipes it and brings it back to me. I looked at the bill and it was cheaper so I was like okay cool he gave me a discount for the pizza he took from me. So I sign it and tip the guy. The "other guy" takes the the black book then COMES Back and says I need to swipe your card again because I charged your coworkers meal on your card. UNBELIEVABLE. Small packages all wrapped up in... just down the street from the high end shopping, near the Metro buses, is this pizza joint. It looks just like all the other shop fronts, the front doors really stick (or suck depending on how you look at it), and the pizza slices aren't very big. Kind of average. The menu visible above the counter. But a slice of pepperoni cost me almost four bucks. Yup. You heard me. On the other hand, the guys are kind of cute... and the pizza slice was almost covered in pepperoni, the dough was delightfully chewy, and the grease ran down my chin. Yummy. read more

The food was just okay. My boyfriend's Philly was too dry. I got an eggplant parmesan sandwich, it was good when I was finally able to eat it. I burnt my mouth pretty bad on it and wasn't able to eat it for awhile (better than being cold I guess?) Would probably suggest trying the pizza since it is a pizza place....the atmosphere was a little strange and so was the service. It's pretty good pizza. Nothing amazing, but it does what it's supposed to do. The service is friendly, the crowd seems to be mostly kids and their parents. Prices are high - about $9.00 for an individual cheese pizza. I usually go for one of three items. The plain cheese pizza is very tasty, with gooey cheese and a soft doughy crust. The cheese calzone with pepperoni is tasty, but be warned - the "individual" size seems to think that an "individual" is someone who hasn't eaten in 2 days. The cheese fries are also nice, but my gripe with them is that they seem to throw all the fries into their dish and then put the cheese on top. The proper method is to put some fries, then apply cheese, then layer on more fries and cheese as necessary. Props for using real cheese though. If you're jonesing for a pizza before or after seeing a movie at Mazza, you might as well go here. I don't know of many other options besides Cosi. read more

I have only ever ordered pizza takeout from this place, so I can't speak to the restaurant or anything else on the menu, but I have ordered pizza multiple times and it has been consistently good. There is nothing super snazzy about their pizza; it's just your classic American pie. However, they do a good job of it--they put on just the right amount of the toppings, the crust has the right amount of chew to it, the sauce is homemade and the cheese is always melty and tasty. They have a nice variety of topping options and they even offer a gluten-free and a low-fat version of their pizzas. I also find the price to be pretty good for the area. Unfortunately I chose to eat dinner here last night. By way of background, I like pizza and love it when it's greasy -- a bit of a guilty pleasure of mine. The pizza at Potomac Pizza, however is disgusting, by way of grease. I ordered two slices of pepperoni and couldn't finish one due to the 2 cm deep pool of grease that had accumulated on my plate. Revolting! Service is also one of my pet peeves, and Potomac struck a cord there too. I made the mistake of trying to place my order at the front counter and I received a blank, slightly constipated stare in return from the 19 year old staffing the register. The service is pretty good they complete your order at a nice pace took about 10 mins and they have great deals like 2 slices of pizza, one soda, and a side order is $10.59 however the food is a BIG problem when I received my order the pizza was thin and soggy the cheese slid off the fries were soggy the only thing that was eight was the soda and I'm sure that they had the least amount responsibility for that. This place probably has some better food like if I got a sandwich or something but the pizza is horrible and they should really improve on that if they are going to have it in their name. A buddy of mine had Potomac Pizza's white pizza recently and was raving about it, so he and I headed over to Chevy Chase tonight so I could try it out - and it was, indeed, one of the best white pizzas I've had in a long time. We ordered it with double cheese (fontina) which gave it a really nice gooey-cheesy texture, and the pizza's garlic and oregano adds good classic flavors to the cheese. Their dough is incredibly fresh, crisp and puffed up around the edges, making for a really great crust. While the reviews are mixed for some of their other pizzas, this one's a winner. The staff is friendly and attentive, and the dining room's pretty comfortable, with a good amount of seating. Parking is easy, and the restaurant provides parking validation. Special tip: On Tuesday nights, you get an extra cheese pizza for just 99 cents! read more

After a lot of switching, and back and forth, this has become my place to order delivery pizza and the odd Italian sub. Their service is solid-- though their location means they fight traffic at most hours--I hate going to this area of town because of the congestion. But they do a good job. Their pizza is very cheesy and consistent. I think it is much better right out of their oven, but that is seldom how I eat it. I LOVE Poto Pizza. I've been eating here for years and I go back every time I come home to DC. I'm glad that this is my 100th review, because I love PP so much that it only seems fitting. They have such great New York-style pizza - each slice is nicely cheesy, greasy, saucy, and foldable. The crust is sweet and fluffy, the sauce is packed with tomato flavor. They also have healthier options if you want your pizza with less guilt - such as the guilt-free pizza, low-fat mozzerella, or gluten-free crust. PP also has a nice selection of cheap wine and beer...and it's very important to have your pizza with booze, especially this delicious cheesy greasy pizza. My favorite thing about Potomac Pizza is that they have a variety of excellent and fresh toppings, including eggplant, an amazing spinach-ricotta mix, and fresh garlic. They're often willing to cater to as many toppings as you want on your pie, and you can even go half-and-half with your pizzas..e.g. my favorite pizza to get is half veggie, half spinach ricotta with tomatoes. Other winners include the Hawaiian pizza and the Nelson Eddie pizza. They also do pizzas well done, thin crust, extra cheese, extra sauce, etc. You can pretty much order any pizza that will make you happy and it will turn out deliciously. The other menu items are also pretty great. I love the eggplant parmesan, the meatball marinara sub, and the chicken cheesesteak sub (with everything of course). You can always taste the freshness of the ingredients, on both the pizza and in the sandwiches. The calzones are amazing (I guess that's pretty much the same as a pizza but whatever). They are HUGE and filling and I love the variety of cheeses they're served with. I love the chicken tenders, too. They're not overly breaded/ fried and really well-seasoned. The cheese fries are also amazing - they don't do a cheese sauce, they melt cheese on top of them. Tip: ask for your cheese fries layered with cheese. This way, they don't melt all the cheese only on top, they alternate between fries and cheese so your fries are never lacking for cheese. Lastly, they make a killer tuna salad. Always good for a basic lunch sandwich. The service is also awesome. All of the guys here are super friendly and jovial. They're very quick with service and with food and they make for a fun meal. If you come often enough, the servers tend to make an effort to get to know their regulars. Plus, everyone there is really into DC sports and they're almost always on TV. Caveat: I've never eaten-in at Potomac Pizza (any location), but have placed delivery orders 37 times from them over the past 3 years (sounds bad, but it averages out to just a hair over 1 order/month). They offer a fairly sophisticated online ordering system, which I generally utilize, because I prefer because I prefer receiving written, not verbal confirmations of my orders. The menu is extensive, and any time I've got a hankering for pizza, subs, or even more generally, pseudo-Italian-American junk food, this place never fails to deliver. If you're ordering pizza, I highly recommend customizing your own, as you're guaranteed a very fresh bite (not to say that any of their specialty pizzas wouldn't be the same), and because the toppings (I've tried a good variety) they use are quality. The lasagna, a bit on the pricey side, is filling and delicious, and the subs I've had from Potomac Pizza have always been satisfying. read more

The real metric for judging pizza is how they handle a classic pepperoni. The pizza was not particularly greasy, which could be good or bad depending on your preference. A large pizza was more than enough to satiate my friend and I. We also ordered cheesey garlic bread which wasn't anything special. However, it is more of a restaurant that I had first anticipated. There was plenty of seating, spaciously arranged in a clean dining area. The ordering counter is separate, but there is waiter service at the tables if you are eating in. The server was friendly and the food came very quickly. They also have a wider selection of beers than I would have guessed: a couple of Red Hooks and Sierra Nevada. There were also a variety of wine options. The food was adequate, although you could find better pizza around. The service was surprisingly good. Consider this for dining in. read more

The closest thing to NY pizza I'm all of the metro area as far as I'm concerned. I drive 20+ miles from Columbia to Bethesda/Chevy Chase just to treat myself. They used to frequently same excellent Groupon deals. Two pizzas for $20.00 and you didn't have to get both pizzas at the same time. So essentially you were getting a $10.00 large pizza with one topping. This is a deal since a large pepperoni costs about $20.00 I haven't seen the Groupon lately but always check before you go. I called the store to notify them of the mixup and they wanted to take the pizza back to redeliver. First red flag! What kind of restaurant takes food from one customer's hom to send to the next? Then I got a call from the driver who chewed me out for several minutes for calling the store! The manager did even offer to send a new pizza. Ended up with a cold, greasy cheese and spinach pizza. We went here tonight for an early dinner with a Groupon for a large 2-topping pizza. I love wings, so we got those for an appetizer, too. We were greeted and seated immediately. The waiter was really friendly and attentive, and the atmosphere was very pleasant. The wings were really good and the blue cheese dressing that came with them was great. It had nice big pieces of blue cheese in it! For our pizza, we got their original pizza with spinach and mushrooms and it was excellent. The sauce was really flavorful, the cheese was melty and salty, the veggies were fresh, and the crust was just the right texture. For a gourmet specialty pizza, I still recommend Pete's and Comet, but this is my go-to pizza place for a great standard pie. I will definitely be back! read more

I grew up in the area and Potomac Pizza has always been my favorite. Their customer service is top-notch with terrific staff.

I'm not even sure I've had a pizza here yet. Rather, I've been stuck on the sandwich menu. The Italian Hoagie, Veal Parm, Eggplant Parm, Meatball, and BLT sandwiches are all great. For the applicable sandwiches, they come fully laden with the delicious, thick red-sauce. Also, how can you go wrong by starting things off with some jalapeno poppers!? The service is really quick and my pick-up order is always ready in the time it takes me to get there. The atmosphere is extremely casual and they have a few good beers. read more

This is a tale of two pizzas. My first time here, I was busy shopping in the area and grabbed a single slice of pepperoni to scarf down on the go. Blech. The dough was soggy and the cheese was sliding right off. It was probably the only time in my life I was glad I'd only ordered one slice of pizza. But being a white pizza aficionada, I tried a personal white pizza later on. It was delicious! It's the closest I've gotten to Grotto's white pizza in the area, though it's still not the same. I wish the dough was crisper and the crust thinner as it tends to be very puffy. Still, I find it to taste pretty good. I've been back for more white pizzas and they're consistently good.
