I can not say enough good things about Poul's and the job they did on our backyard. We had them out to look at an erosion issue we were having near the garage, and while we were at it, I asked Andrew to give me an idea on how we could better utilize the backyard space. The design he came up with addressed all of our erosion concerns and netted us a fantastic two level patio set up that gave us plenty of space to cook, eat and relax. The plantings are healthy, plentiful and addressed all of my requests on color, style, etc. Andrew was a breeze to work with from a design standpoint and John and his crew were consummate professions with the install. They started on time, kept us apprised of any issues (of which there were almost none) and were quick to address any questions or concerns I came up with. We bid this project out to multiple vendors. Poul's was not the least expensive (nor the absolute most expensive), but they were the highest quality and best design. We did extensive research to find the best landscaping company to build a patio in our backyard in addition to re-grading our yard so it was flatter to install a swing-set for my kids. After meeting with around 5 different companies, Poul's came out on top and it was one of the best decisions we've ever made. From the initial meeting with Andrew, we knew we found the right company to work with. Andrew was professional, friendly, and willing to listen to all of our questions. He was also willing to do a mock up drawing of what we wanted to build which was a real big deal to us because this project was not going to be cheap, and almost every other company wanted a 5-10% downpayment and go into contract with them before any drawings were done. John, Manny and Alvaro took over the amazing work from Andrew and were the actual work force behind installing our patio and re-grading our yard. The guys always showed up on time in the morning, were extremely respectful of our property and neighbors, friendly to my kids when they snooped and wanted to watch, always cleaned up after themselves every single day, and left on time. When we had some bad sod installed, they were quick to install replacement pieces. Even after that did not take, they stood behind their product and replaced them out until it was right. We never had to beg or plead for this to be done either. To put the icing on the cake, a week following the completion of the project, the owner (Dan) even took the time to come out to see how the product turned out and was wiling to chat with me to ask any questions I had regarding general upkeep of our new patio and tips to continue to help our new sod grow into a beautiful backyard. I can go on and on and provide even more amazing details about our positive experience with Poul's, but I think by now you should know there's no where else to look for your landscaping needs but them. read more

Quality of work is great and it has been the talk of the neighborhood. Called and ask for a quote to install sod and possibly look into weekly grass cuts. Lady had to check to see if they can take on additional projects, so was placed on a brief hold. When she got back on the phone I was told the sod shouldn't be a problem, and someone would be out to take a look and send me a quote. That was a few weeks ago and haven't heard anything back. I ended up calling another landscaping company in the area. I had a landscape architecture reach out the next day and set up an appointment. Not saying the work they do is bad. Outstanding experience using Poul's to redesign our front yard landscape. We bought our home from a retired woman who spent the vast majority of her time working on landscaping the front yard. It was beautiful when we moved in, but after 20 years of constantly trying to keep it up, we surrendered and called Poul's. We worked closely w/Poul's design architect, Rick Ramoser, telling him we were looking for easier upkeep, but still lots of color. Rick came back with a design that incorporated everything we discussed, plus two recommendations to light our Crabapple and Maple trees in the front yard. A few weeks later John and Jorge came out, spending 3 full days (in 95+ degree weather) tearing old landscaping out and replacing it with easy upkeep, absolutely beautiful assorted perennials, boxwoods, and other flowers/plants. John and Jorge could not have been more professional and enthusiastic in their work. A perfect example of their dedication was on the last day, after the entire project and cleanup was complete, John took one last walk around the garden and noticed one of the smaller plants was a little too close to a downspout. So, they got the equipment back out of the truck, and repositioned the one flower, 6 inches away from the downspout. Even after in-depth oral and written instructions from both Rick and John on the upkeep of our new landscaping, Dan the owner came out 2 weeks later to ensure everything met our expectations. Poul's fixed an issue with a concrete stoop on side of the house. The soil had slumped away over the years, leaving a giant step up from the ground to the 1st step. Their solution looks beautiful using a stack of thick flag stone to provide a support to new/regraded soil. The first step is now a much more pleasant height. read more

I have been working with Poul's since the spring of 2012 when we decided to put a pool in our back yard. The landscape architecht with Poul's was simply the best of 4 companies I spoke to. He had the most creative ideas for our backyard and really incorporated all of our design ideas to make our backyard not only beautiful, but all of our space usable. They have continued to work with us on our landscape maintenance and additng additonal landscape this spring and their quality of work is always excellent. We love our new trees from Poul's Landscaping. They did a great job of planting and mulching the entire area around the trees. The only reason I didn't give 5 stars is because it took a long time to be delivered. I wasn't there when they were planted but my husband said the guys were great and cleaned up afterwards without leaving any debris.Lastly, Kelly helped us pick out the trees. We live on a golf course, being so close to our property line I needed a variance approval from the city that was needed. I had 8 landscapers come and view the site. Poul's Landscaping & Nursery was the only one who stuck with me for my 8 month process for city approval. They did an excellent job with the install and cleaning up the location after the install of 25 pallets of material delivered on our front driveway and landscape. They came back in the spring to finish up the installation of trees and landscaping. We have plans for them to come back to finish our front foyer in the near future. read more

We are very pleased with our curved front flagstone walk. Poul's was straightforward and more than fair. We did have to wait a while to get started because of demand, but once it was started, it moved along quickly and was worth the wait. Poul's landcapping installed our patio 18 years ago and did a fantastic job. This spring we noticed that the paver edging was coming up above the patio itself. It looked bad and was causing an issue that could result in people tripping over it. We decided that the only company to fix it would be Poul's. They did an excellent job. I called on Monday, got an estimate on Tuesday and the following Monday the work was started. Could not be happier our patio looks brand new!! We highly recommend them for any brick work you have. They may cost a little more but in the long run your investment retains its value. You cannot go wrong with poul's. read more

First I must say that the work itself was very well done, and I'm happy with the job now that it's finished. But as I'll explain, their communication, and everything leading up to the job being done was severely lacking. I think an email I sent to Kelly summarizes everything well, so here is my email to her (keep in mind that as of this writing, 2 business days, I have received no response from this email): "I just received my final bill in the mail, and it's different than the proposal. After having looked back at the proposal I see that you/someone did the math wrong and the total was incorrect (the individual prices for each part of the job was unchanged from proposal to final bill). I agreed to the job based on that total. I didn't add up all the items to double check your math was correct when I signed the proposal. Technically your invoice is correct. Technically I signed a document not realizing that I was agreeing to pay $306 MORE than what was on the proposal total. So because of those technicalities I plan on paying you the amount agreed upon, but I'm pretty F&$%ING pissed about it. Your communication during this whole process has been absolutely atrocious. - Having to play phone tag for a over a week before finally getting in contact with Andrew - Andrew coming to our property and doing his assessment without knocking on the door to meet face to face and go over the things we wanted done - Having to ask you what type of rocks would be put into our yard before sending you the deposit (that should have been something discussed in a face to face meeting with Andrew...this is what it'll look like, this is what to expect from us, etc.) - Having to call you to make sure that you received my deposit - Having to call multiple times to get a date as to when the work would be done - On the day the work began just seeing your workers all the sudden in my backyard (I have dogs and ringing the doorbell to make sure they weren't outside SHOULD be standard operating procedure for landscapers) - The work taking longer than expected. They came back for a second day (half day) of work, but nobody communicated that with me. Nobody updated me with what was happening with my yard, and again I have dogs to consider when it comes to my yard - Lastly what you already know about, your communication through the proposal that had a math error on it Despite the work itself being well done, I don't plan on recommending your services to anyone." 4/5 stars - satisfaction with finished product 1/5 stars - communication and everything else 10/26/18 Addendum after getting a phone call with Andrew (response was 10 business days after sending the original email to Kelly) Andrew called me to go over some of my concerns. He was obviously apologetic and professional, and explained some of my concerns. - Phone tag is inevitable. I put that one in there for completeness sake, but I understand that's not necessarily anything they did wrong - He was under the impression that I didn't want a face to face meeting (so we could get the ball rolling sooner), so that was more of a miscommunication rather than poor communication - Not ringing the doorbell on the day of the job is what they normally do so as not wake sleeping babies or someone who works the night shift and is sleeping, and he assured me that he double checked to make sure the dogs weren't outside - Lastly, he apologized for having the wrong total on the proposal, and that he implemented a new procedure so the customer will get notification that the deposit has been received. Overall I'm satisfied that they got back to me, and that at least some new policies have been implemented. It took quite a long to get that response from Andrew, but oh well. Poul's designed and installed landscaping and hardscape in the front and side of our home. They did an amazing job transforming the whole look of our house. This was a large rip and replace job with retaining walls, new paths, and a new driveway in addition to new plants. we had a good experience every step of the way. Not only do we get compliments from our neighbors, but even our UPS man said how nice things looked. Looking forward to the spring when everything will be in bloom. read more

I would really like to give Poul's Landscaping a good review. Their website is pretty nice and it looks like they do quality work. The gentleman my boyfriend talked to seemed knowledgable and excited about doing work for us. We made an appointment with him to come look at our yard to give us a quote to install a patio. My boyfriend and I rushed home from work to make sure that we would be home in time for our appointment. I arrived home 15 minutes prior to the start of our appointment. Poul's Landscaping never showed for our appointment. The next day my boyfriend emailed them and called them. We never got a response or an explanation. Poul's is located in Long Grove and we live in Mount Prospect. Maybe they are used to doing more upscale houses and we weren't ritzy enough for them. Either way it is exceptionally poor business practice to set up an appointment, not show, and then give no explanation. Due to their unreliability I highly doubt I will ever use them for any landscaping or patio projects. read more
