They are reasonably priced and weren't purposefully unprofessional, but I have higher standards and they failed to diagnose my hesitation issue. They also fed me a few standard, copy/paste phone responses of "I was just about to call you" after they failed to ever call me at all, and "I'll call you back in 20 minutes", which always ended up with me having to call them 2 hours later. That stuff pisses me off so bad it's unreal. I was never rude to them about it though. I worked in customer service for too long to know you can't attack the messenger. If you decide to drop your car off here I would only let them do specific work and expect to have to be the one to stay on top of them. I dropped my car off at night and no one ever called to let me know they received the keys, or to verify the work. They never called back when they said they would and the ONLY time they called was to let me know they replaced the motor mount, but couldn't figure out the hesitation issue. They said it was "probably" (not a very confident word choice) a bad ignition coil causing hesitations. Um, that was replaced and didn't do anything. Honestly, every time I called I felt like they were bs'ing me about their progress on my car. (Oh the mechanic is working on it right now...really? Has he been working on it for the last 4 days, too?) They had it for a week and kept giving me the same story about what they were doing. Priced well, capable off turning wrench, but I'm not impressed. So 2 stars because, "Meh. I've experienced better." I also usually pay in cash because it saves the business money, but since they irritated me I paid with card. At least I got points out of this. read more

Awesome job!! They saved my over 3 grand. I came in for a Check ending code (cylinder 3 mis firing). That job only cost me $240, which sounds about right. Where they saved me over 3 Grand is a ticking noise on the right side of the engine. I found out about the problem months ago from an oil change at a different shop. That shop wanted to tear my engine about and said that it is a major issue. I have a few other shop said that it might just be the lifters and don't worry about it yet. Anyways, I came into Poway Auto Repair for the sparkplug/coil job, the mechanic notice the ticking problem from the lifters too. The funny thing was, at the end of the sparkplug/coil job, the ticking noise went away. Engine running smooth!!! So my $240 job solved more then just one issue :) read more

We have brought our vehicles to Poway Auto for years. Jose has always remembered us by name, and remembers our vehicles. Jose and his team always go out of their way, and go above and beyond to provide great service. We are not rich, and our vehicles have well over 100,000 miles, one over 260,000 miles. We always him prioritize the issues he finds by safety and mechanics of the vehicle. Today, we picked up our car, and Andrew said they replaced the bad starter. And they also checked all the fluids. And they fixed a burnt out tail light. Extras for no charge! What mechanic does that? Not many. I could write positive comments for every visit we have gone to Poway Auto. Here's the deal. This place is busy, probably because they're good at what they do. So, sometimes they forget to call you back, but they're really quite nice so go ahead and call them back. It's really not a big deal. I went in a week ago because my car was noisy when accelerating. They took me to look at the underside of my car, which is corroding away from harsh Canadian winters. Turns out I had a leak in my exhaust manifold. Jose told me it'll cost between 300-650$ to repair, depending on if some of it was salvageable. They didn't charge me a dime to look at it. I dropped off my car today and went back 4 hours later. The total cost with parts and labor was $241. This is how you get and keep customers. This is the best service I've ever gotten from a mechanic. And they're personable too! The car isn't noisy anymore and I'm completely satisfied. I'll be back. read more

It was Christmas Eve and my warning light came on for low oil and low coolant. I know very little about cars but I know that running low on both can lead to serious problems. It being Christmas Eve I knew it'd be tricky finding a shop open to help me put oil and coolant in my car so I'd be good to go for my trip up north tomorrow to Thousand Oaks. I pulled up and was told they were closed, then Steve whom I think may have been the owner or manager said that he wouldn't let me go with out him first helping me. (Being Christmas Eve and all) He then proceeded to hook me up and gave me some good advice as well as to what may have caused the leak. What a great find in our local community. We found this place via Yelp and based on the reviews decided to try it out. It was hard to go somewhere new after living in San Diego for 11 years but having moved to Poway recently, we needed an auto repair facility that was closer to home. Beware!! I began having issues, hearing a metal on metal dragging at the rear of the car. Since I had just had the brakes redone I thought it was the differential. Well I traded in the car this past weekend and during the trade in process was shown that the rear brake pads had never been replaced. It could have been an honest mistake but be sure the work they charge you for is actually completed. Update: After this post Poway Auto Repair contacted me and even though I no longer had the car for them to look at, they worked with me, ultimately offering a refund. This place has been steadily going down hill in quality and uphill in bogus pricing. The last straw was when I had an engine change on my 2009 Prius last year and have been trying to get them to honor the warranty ever since. Each time I went in to have the check engine light diagnosed they would simply reset the light. When i asked the mechanics why they won't honor the warranty each one says. "it's my boss (Jose) I just work here." When I took the car to the dealership they diagnosed a cylinder misfire. I went back to Poway Auto Repair only to be told the owner would give me a call to discuss the issue. The call never came and once again I showed up and asked Jose the reason for not calling. He said, "I was busy." It was evident he had no intention of ever honoring the warranty. In fact he unbelievably said, "If the car was that bad you should have brought it in earlier." The fact is i have been trying to bring it in throughout the year until the warranty ran out - shady. The mechanic (Albert) who changed the engine said I could drive it to LA from Poway and "it should be Ok." I later found out a car should never be driven on a cylinder misfire. This is incompetence at its worse. Here is their scheme- if they don't want to fix their own damage, they will simply turn off the check engine light and tell you to drive it causing more damage. Then they tell you it's your fault. Please look at the one star unpublished reviews below to get a taste of what I experienced. Yes there are plenty of good reviews for minor "repairs" or "service" but for anything major I would recommend elsewhere. I've been looking for a new doctor for our family's cars. Tho' it was one experience, these guys impressed me with knowledge and even educated me on my truck's sickness to allow me to make a proper decision. No sales. The tech that looked under the hood and diagnosed even noted an oil pan leak which they fixed with sealant at no cost (tho' I was getting ready to pay them for a bigger ticket item). I'm so glad I took our Mazda CX-9 to this place. I spoke to Jose and he was very easy to talk over the phone in regard to our brake warning light that was coming on our car. Very nice guy when I met him and turned out to be very honest too. He told me it would cost $59 an hour to look at it. He thought 2 hours at the most. He said $119 it would cost to look at it. Sounded reasonable and he was able to help me the following morning. Took our Mazda to him and a very easy process. They called me an hour later and told me that the car needed new brake pads up front. The cost was $275 and the warning light will go away. I said fine. Please go ahead and 45 minutes later my car was ready for pick up. It only took approximately 2 hours and a total of $275. I will definitely use again! THE needle in a haystack! Finding an honest and experienced automotive repair shop is often like looking for a needle in a haystack. Jose and his guys are amazing. I was treated respectfully and professionally from my first phone call to get estimates to the moment I walked out the door. Jose was up front about what needed to be done and the costs. I even sat there and listened to him call several auto parts store looking for the best price for the parts my car needed, but that isn't what impressed me the most. Jose greeted many of his customers by name and chatted about things that reflected an established relationship with the people who walk through his establishment. As I was sitting there waiting for my brake job to be completed the conversations went like this: "So and so referred me and I am so glad they did!", "As always, thank you for a great job!", "Thank you for checking out this car before I bought it.", "I'll be back." etc. We all search around for a good deal that delivers what is expected and Jose and his guys are as above board as it gets! The Owner is as far as my experience went, is a very honest and straight forward guy. I have an aging Mazda RX7 Turbo, which I have done extensive work to myself. I broke an axle-shaft which means I had to have the rear sub-frame dropped out of it, and since I am between places to live and no longer have a garage or driveway (getting ready to move to a new city) I decided to take it to Poway Auto Repair based decent reviews as I was in a pinch. My car was stuck at the shop for almost roughly 3 weeks due to the scarcity of parts, which is nobody's fault but mine. When all was said and done though, I was still given a very reasonable rate, I got honest service from start to finish and when the replacement parts were tracked down (Mazda wants 6 times what they should cost or has discontinued them) it took them no time at all to have my car ready for pick up. Being a guy who works on his own cars because I tend to not trust the quality of work and honesty of the people working at them, I was very pleasantly surprised. The only critical thing I could say is that Jose Z. (the owner) is a super busy guy at that desk and response time on the phone can be a little slow, but he always got back to me and communicated what was going on very well. If I were not moving away I'd definitely take my car back again and I would absolutely recommend family or anyone else looking for a good shop to give them a shot. read more

Last week, I approached Poway Auto Repair with somewhat of a enique problem. I have a 2002 Volkswagen Beetle which needed assess for a possible fuel system issue. However, the car key was lost and I needed to have a key recoded in order to start the vehicle. Evenso, It most likely was going to require towing to the shop. I spoke with Jose Zendejas and told him I needed the key recoded and then the car checked out. He assured me he could accomplish this task. As I checked with other repair shops, I was advised the key could only be coded by the Volkswagen Dealership. I was told this by two or three different auto repair shops. I called Poway Auto Repair and asked them if they were sure they could recode the key and was told by Stephen they could. I asked how it was that other shops were telling me it could only be done by a dealership and he said, "They must not have the equipment to do it like we do." By now, I was feeling uncomfortable with their responses to my questions, so later that day, I called and asked for a price quote to recode the key. Stephen said he would check with his biller and call me back that same day. He never did so. I called Poway Auto the next morning and spoke with Jose. I asked for the price quote and he said he learned they would not be able to code the key. At that point our conversation ended. In my opinion, I believe I was being pursposely deceived into believing they could perform a job task which they knew they could not. I find it very unlikely they didn't know from the get-go that they could not recode the key. I believe there intentions were to get the car into their garage any way possible and deal with the matter at that time. It would have cost me to have the vehicle towed to their shop. I would not recommend this business to anyone. In my opinion,they are deceptive and dishonest in their handling of customers read more
