I brought in a vintage lamp that needed repairing, and also needed a new shade. He took one quick look at it, diagnosed the issue, and fixed it in about two minutes. I've had lamps in for repairs elsewhere before, and they've been in the shop for about a week, so I couldn't believe how fast this was. I knew they had shades, but I didn't know they had this kind of selection. Hundreds in every shape size and color scattered around the room, so there was no problem finding the perfect one. I don't live near there, but it's close enough that if I ever have another issue with a lamp, I'm coming straight here. read more

I love lamps. Vintage lamps, mid century lamps, modern lamps, I love them all. Practical Props not only has a wide selection of lamps and lampshades, they also do an excellent job at repairing lamps. I've had many a visit to this store at their previous location on Magnolia Boulevard but, until recently, hadn't been to the their new location on Cleon Avenue. One of my favorite mid century lamps needed to have the wiring completely redone. I dropped it off and few days later it was ready for pickup. Sadly, in my household, I am no longer allowed to buy any more lamps. I guess I got carried away. However, Practical Props is the place I would go to if I needed a new lamp, a new lampshade or to have a lamp repaired. They are professional, local, friendly and a great little shop. read more

I just left here and the only words I could say were "what just happened?" We brought in a light fixture I was sure would cost double the price of the fixture itself to fix. This has been our "go-to" lighting store for years - and he never disappoints. There's a great mix of vintage items inside - last time there was the coolest phone shaped like a piano! The prices are reasonable for the quality of the items and what's great is Ian can rework a piece for you as well. I had a lamp that I bought second hand and was looking for a place to get it fixed despite never needing a lamp thing fixed before. It was a cute design, but the light started not working the day before I bought it. The owner was super nice and gave me a fair quote. They also took the time to let me know what needed to be done. I was called in less than 2 days and was charged what I was quoted! So glad that I managed to get a lamp that's still probably less than the retail price even with the cost of repair. They kept it simple and easy to get my lamp fixed. I definitely will come back! Parking is also very easy. Very cool place to explore. I live near by, so I walk passed by it sometimes. It's neat, has many cool lamps to peek at. They rent lamps as props for movies, fix lamps, re-store them, they do a bit of everything. I had a cool, vintage lamp I wanted to use for a movie, but it didn't have a shade, I needed one to match the time period and the style. The owner was cool, helpful, helped us find the right one. He was great to chat with. The price was decent. Other friends had good experiences here as well, fixing older lamps or getting shades to match an older model. Street parking. This place is great! My bedroom lamp had a broken switch. I found them on line, called, and was told it could be repaired while I wait. I rushed over there, was greeted warmly by two people - I assume it was Della and Ian - and five minutes later it was done! And the cost of a new socket was extremely reasonable! The repair tech even came out to demonstrate it now works. Be sure to look around in the really cool showroom with its many unique, vintage lamps. There's ample parking in back, plus street parking. I'm writing about my experience as an online customer. I contacted them via e-mail probably six months before we ordered to ask questions about finishes and lead time once our order was placed. Their answer was prompt and helpful. Even though it was months later when we finally ordered, we received our item in the promised window. It was well packed and absolutely beautiful. There is a multitude of difference between a hand-crafted item built in the US and a mass-produced imported one. Our light is placed where anyone who drives past our house will see it and it looks phenomenal whether we have it turned all the way on or dimmed. It was really nice to be able to choose from a variety of sizes, configurations and finishes to find the right one for our space. I know you can find Sputniks plenty big box stores these days but if you're comparing those vs what you can get here, please know that many of the more commercially available options require a high-capacity dimmer switch. (I mean unless you're not using a dimmer because you enjoy 18+ bulbs turned on at full blast all the time.) People who don't realize this have melted their wires (or worse) buy using a switch that couldn't handle the load. I also cannot guarantee that none of PP's lights exceed what a normal switch can handle but ours didn't. If you're adding a fixture with as many bulbs as these have, please make sure your light switch can handle it! read more
