Prato Bakery is amazing! it truly is! their sandwiches and cookies are authentically Italian. It is what you would have on a trip in Italy. I am grossed out by the boloney sandwiches and chicken parm "Italian delis." I am very happy with Prato. The menu is consistent and really love that you have the option of building your own sandwich with fantastic ingredients. Fresh mozzarella, authentic Bologna mortadella, fresh tomatoes. How have I not reviewed and recognized my favorite Italian bakery in all of JC? *closes eyes and transports to Tuscany* Known for their cantucci, which are more moist, dense biscotti, don't sleep in the rest of the items offered. Although I've been know to bring a 1 LB bag ($10) as a hostess gift. Said hostess is known to keep them for herself but hey, so would I! These are really good and come with huge chunks of chocolate, apricot, prunes and figs. Baci baci are a hazelnut flour cookie that must be tried to believe they are real. Espresso is very good, typical Italian style. Straightforward. Recently tried the Nutella latte and I assure you, they don't skimp here. A sweet treat for sure. The focaccia sandwiches are to die for. Persona fave is the Prato - with prosciutto cotto (tastes like ham and prosciutto had a baby) and fontina cheese simple sometimes is best. I crave these always. Yum. The cafe itself is spacious with plenty of tables. You can sit outside when it's warm and the tables have been adored with a simple herb bouquet. Fair warning - stopped in for two Mortadella sandwiches and hadn't been there in a while. Each sandwich had literally two slices of Mortadella on it. This plus a drizzle of olive oil and the bread cost $8.50 each. While I understand that this is not Jersey Mike's and Italian sandwiches do not have much meat, literally two slices of meat is a rip off. So be forewarned. read more

Everything was great I really enjoyed the meal only thing I would do different is not pre spread the croissant as it wasn't has flaky as it should have been or it looks like it is was when it first came out the oven. Prices have over doubled in the last 4 years and I feel it is way overpriced now. We are no longer required to wear masks if you are vaccinated (it's by stores to say if they require or not), however they do not have any sign anywhere stating they still require it. The hypocrisy is, they told us to wear a mask but then allowed another customer to come in and order maskless. I just wish they were consistent in what they want to enforce instead of picking and choosing who should or shouldn't wear masks. read more

Prato Bakery is another Jersey City gem. I've dined in and have ordered delivery from here several times and have nothing but great things to say. The Manhattan focaccia sandwich is one of their more popular menu items and it's not hard to see why. Their breads are very fresh and are packed with flavor...seriously, I could just eat plain bread from Prato and I would be happy. But combine this with fresh meats and cheeses and you're in heaven. I've also had their brioche sandwich and that was just as Devine. To drink I've tasted their hot chocolate which is one of the best that I've had in a restaurant. They hand make their hot chocolate and if you open the lid you will see the cup is lined with a thick layer of chocolate...mmmm! I've also had their Nutella chocolatte and that was delicious as well. Previously I wrote about my obsessive adoration for Il Cantuccio in West Village (RIP) and while I'm still unspeakably sad about its closing several years ago now, I'm thrilled that their Jersey City location Prato Bakery is alive and kicking and just as amazing!!!!!!!!! Not only is this some of the most authentic Italian food you'll find this side of Milan, it is so reasonably priced I am straight up crying over the fact that these prices can only be found in Jersey nowadays. Like, you don't understand here. I'm talking fresh focaccia slathered in JUST the right amount of olive oil, warm fresh from the oven, with perfect prosciutto and mozzarella and speck and whatever the hell else you order (NOTE: JUST FOCACCIA + NUTELLA IS AN OPTION, PEOPLE) and like it's the perfect size to hold up to your mouth and chew. Nothing's falling off the damn sandwich all over your hands and face and clothing but you're still getting the right amount of nutrients to feel like you ate a meal without feeling stuffed. It's just..... I just can't tell you. It's not just the focaccia, they got these amazing breads and buns galore (ehiiiiii). I had this one rosemary raisin bun that was absolutely killer. Also their caffé è perfetto, certo. I had an excellent cappuccino that brought a tear to my eye (though I may still have just been crying over the focaccia, hard to tell). My only wish in life and death is that Prato Bakery opens up more locations in the general New York City area so I may feast to my hearts content without having to spend the $800 to fly to Tuscany or the $17 to take the tunnel. Where do I even begin with this phenomenal bakery. So worth the walk from my apartment (and I needed it after all the things I ordered). This place is like stepping into Italy again. Everything looks fresh and they have imported products from Italy to buy and take home. Makes you feel like its so authentic. Once I tasted the food I realized it was! I had a focaccia panini and their bread was amazing. They also delicately placed my mozzarella, prosciutto, tomato and olive oil sandwich so perfectly that I had to take a picture of it. It was also served on a wooden board, which I loved! After taking a bite I realized I would most definitely be coming back here. You could tell all the ingredients were imported from high quality places and super fresh. I also had a small Nutella filled pastry which was also delicious. Some of the paninis and ham and cheese sandwiches came in small sizes that were pre-prepared, however you could also make your own sandwiches and add whatever you want. Lastly, the coffee was my favorite part! Served in giant tea cups my latte was absolutely delicious! Best coffee in the area that I have tried so far! New year, new reviews! Starting 2018 off right with a review of the incredible Prato Bakery. We've walked by a bunch, but one day after church we decided to come by and experience Prato Bakery in all its glory. I could immediately tell it's all about quality food at Prato - classic, old school Italian treats and sandwiches with fresh, quality ingredients. I was craving joy chocolate and I'm so happy I have this one a chance - it was absolutely perfect. Definitely chocolate-y, but not very sweet which is exactly how I like my hot chocolate. The flavors really come through when it's not masked by sugar. I ordered the potato and rosemary focaccia bread which was quite a large serving - 2 pieces! I could eat this every day. The food and drinks were amazing, but at an extremely reasonable price which was refreshing. Their current space is pretty spacious, but I hear they are moving to Newark Ave in March. I like this place mainly because no one else seems to know about it or eat in. No strollers, no crowds, etc. There was a line, but all those people came and went. I think they need to change the register situation or work out a way to get orders done quicker, but other than that, the food is good, the wifi is good, the ambiance is chill and the lady who is always there is a sweet Italian lady who's always looking out for you. Prices are good but the service is laughably bad. Ordered some food today and was not asked if it was to go or to stay. When I asked for utensils and a plate as it was to stay I was informed they only had spoons despite several other customers sitting with plates and forks. I wouldn't normally be upset by this if it was a mistake on my end. But the need to specify you don't want it packed to go should not be the responsibility of the customer. I had their Manhattan focaccia sandwich and bought some sweet pastries to go. I've never had a focaccia sandwich like that before and found that it was very different, unique and delicious. The food was fresh and made from scratch. The quality was also there to match. On the other hand, those sweet pastries were not that great. They were very dry and tasted like breads from cheap stores. The ambiance was very nice and a lot of customers were constantly coming and going while I was there. More of a coffee shop than a bakery. The coffee is okay. The ambience is great and there's plenty of seating. There's a chalk board in the back, and plenty of art work to talk about. The latter was definitely my favorite - dripping with olive oil and sweet bell peppers, it was excellent. We couldn't get away without trying the trio of Cantucci (3 for $2) - fig, chocolate and prune. Definitely loved the chocolate more over any of the others. If you're in the neighborhood and looking for a quick bite and good strong coffee, Prato is a solid choice. I feel bad that I missed this bakery many times, I used to see this shop from outside everytime I walk down to grove street but never went inside. I am so happy now that I finally visited. What I really like is their flavored CANTUCCI, I really like these biscotti(made without oil and without butter). I was confused between the flavors and ended up with a box mix of chocolate and almond cantucci. They are very delicious. Me and husband finished that bag of 1 pound in 2 days. They also have figs and orange flavor as well which I will try next time. They have differnt types of sandwiches as well, with cold cut meats as well. People in their were enjoying coffee with sandwiches. The seating area is not big but enough for 4-5 parties. Next to the cash counter, there is a fridge with drinks and some desserts. When I was there, they only had Tiramisu cups which by the way looked amazing. Their kitchen is clearly visible and looks neat and clean. Everyone was wearing gloves while preparing or cutting food. The cold meats are on display, they cut in front of you as you order. I really want to try their pizza slice and nutella croissant, I will be coming soon. read more

Had a Manhattan sandwich, prosciutto and tomato on focaccia, and it was nicely done as well. Specifically the focaccia which is really good. I LOVE this place! With that said, I arrived today, October 14th at 6:50pm, and I ordered a little over a pound of Focaccia Seca, which I adore, and then as I was ordering a half of a pound of both Prosciutto & Mortadella each, the white male employee in a black hat with a Spanish or Italian accent refused to serve it to me. Stating, "I'm cleaning up and I can't help you with this order and we are closing soon." I was astounded by his brazen refusal to serve a customer. His behavior should NEVER be protocol for an employee. My take on this: The stores hours for this Prato Bakery location are from 7am to 7:30pm, and the employee knew he was in the wrong as he refused to give me his name. I am certain that the owners would be highly upset to know that they lost a sale because an hourly employee made an executive decision to not serve a client, because they felt that cleaning, or better yet, leaving early, was more important than a sale, even though there was still over 30 minutes till closing time. What a disappointment! There are many people looking for work, if an employee does not want to work their intended hours, I would suggest finding new employees. In the end, we all have a job to do, if I told my employer I was not going to do my job, I would be fired immediately. Case closed! read more

I just ordered delivery from Prato for lunch, and boy was it DELICIOUS. I ordered their tomato, mozzarella, prosciutto sandwich, and then opted to add arugula to it. The focaccia bread that it comes on is the best I have ever had. It is thin and crispy on the outside, yet soft on the inside. The flavor is a tasty mixture of salt and olive oil. Mmmmmmmm! My only complaint is that they only give you a thin slice of mozzarella. I also ordered the rosemary, potato focaccia just to try it. That was also excellent. Overall highly recommend! read more

What's not to love about this bakery?! From the perfect latte to the mouthwatering treats, it is the perfect hide out from the busy world that we live in. You can tell that everything is baked fresh by the huge kitchen in the back of the store. And if you like nutella, I guarantee you that you will like the selection here. There are plenty of seating and even high chairs to accommodate Jersey City demographics. There's even a little tent in the corner of the bakery to distract even the most energetic toddler. This review is based on several experiences at Prato in 2016. I hope to visit again when I'm back visiting JC. I came here a lot - mainly to do some work outside of the house and have a good, big, hot cup of coffee and a couple of cantucci. I eventually branched out and had the pancioc (the roll with chocolate chunks inside it), then finally made it there for the Sunday-only specials - the porchetta sandwich and the donut (both Sunday specials). The pancioc was great, though all that chocolate and bun is a bit off the grid for me. The Sunday stuff (not sure if that is still the case - that's what's in the photo), I must say, was incredible. I don't each much bread, and usually stay especially far away from focaccia, since it's often served up so thick and dry. Prato's porchetta sandwich was on a lovely focaccia, thin and chewy, and leaves your fingers just oily enough that you know you're eating the real deal. Porchetta was wonderful, nice and chewy around the edges, moist, great texture and seasoning all around. Donut was great, too. Not very sweet despite the sugar dusting -- some kind of fine-grained sugar, unique texture. This is a friendly place, with an easy-going, relaxed clientele. About a dozen small circular to rectangular 4 tops tactfully placed upon the entrance. The effervescent combination scents of baking bread & brewing coffee fill the air beneath the ever present Italian music flowing down from the speakers above. Double espresso made to perfection and I'm an espresso guy. I'm not sure of the beans or the wheel grinding machine spurting out the nectar from the coffee gods above, but the slight bitter nutty taste is unlike any I've encountered before, simply amazing. Of course your typical coffee shop variety's are available, but I will never get past the espresso that's for sure. Cantucci which are soft chewy piscotti cookies are their staple and will have first timers raving as they come back for more. I believe I put on 5 lbs. attempting to peal myself and family from devouring one after another. Focaccia pizza fresh as a tom cat on the prowl ( I know, but I'm just going with it anyway). Sammichs with your favorite Italian meats like Prosciutto, Mortadella, Sopressata all bedded with fresh mozzarella between 2 thickly sliced focaccia. All for around $5, yes really. In fact there isn't anything remotely expensive on the humble menu. Always samples available as you hit the high glass counter, be prepared to exercise caution because that's where they'll hook and reel you in. The help is warm and inviting and of course as expected clean enough to eat off the floor although I wouldn't recommend that you try, lol. If you've cruised or strolled by and wondered if you should try, come in for a bite or sip of this enchanting bakery delight. read more

Don't buy your food here unless you want your bread has human dirty finger nail. We found this in my sandwich and this is really making me sick and has ruined my trip!!!
