Cute spot for breakfast pastries, Downtown JC is full of cute corner restaurants / bakeries, and Cafe Madelaine is a perfect example. It's a great spot for breakfast pastries, with plenty of room for indoor and outdoor seating. Ironically, we came here right after spending a week in the South of France, and I have to say, Madelaine can hold its own. We shared the Leek and Parmesan Cheese Danish, the Raspberry Croissant and the Chocolate Jumelle. The first two were great quality, but the Jumelle was too thick and doughy for my liking. Let me preface by saying I WANT to give a 5 star rating, I really do. But the reality I have never felt welcomed in the 3 years that i've been going for my sunday coffee. The excellent quality of the roast does not pair well with cold scowl I receive from staff. My favorite items include but are no limited to: Leek Parmeisan Bistro, Turkey Cheddar Croissants, and the berry tarts. But there are many excellent options you can't go wrong. Quiche a plenty! I however cannot ignore the fact that the staff looks at me with disdain. Not really sure what taboo I've committed, what grave sin I am guilty of. But I am frankly tired of seeing the staff treat me in such a way, and is the main reason Im writing this review. Cafe Madelaine had a big renovation about a year or two back, transforming from a busy coffee shop to a more relaxed french bistro. Id reccomended grabbing a book or a laptop to work and enjoy its ambiance. Anyway, 3 stars. Food: Excellent. Location: Peaceful. After a long time of planning to visit here, I finally decided to drop in to sample some of their pastries and possibly add them to a new blog article. Why the delay? Mainly because it closes early, by 4 PM. But, also because there are many bakeries and cafes in Jersey City now. All of which are slowly creeping toward NYC prices. Making them more of a treat than an everyday indulgence. So, for my first-time visit, I sampled a few items: Blueberry tart, almond pear tart, and a Nutella puff. Both tarts had a very similar flavor with a light taste and sweetness - 4 stars Nutella Puff was very soft and had the perfect balance of sweetness - 5 stars As for the service, no one greeted me upon entry. And yes, there was someone stationed at the counter near the entry. A "bonjour" would have been great, but a "welcome" would have sufficed given that the cashier wasn't busy and the price. As for the ambiance, it is a very clean, modern, and charming cafe. It has ample table seating in the rear inside as well as outdoor seating. As for the prices, most pastries ranged between $5.50 - $8 for a slice or a decent portion. Compared to the $5 churro donut I purchased from a different cafe before visiting here, the prices are expensive but relatively reasonable. Parking? There is street parking. Look around or just walk it from the Grove Street path station. Overall, I'd give this shop 4 stars. The experience didn't "wow" me, but it has a good balance of price and quality, making it a solid spot to treat yourself occasionally. And since the food quality is better than many poser cafes and bistros in the area, with jacked-up prices on basic fare, it is one of my top picks for the neighborhood. read more

Stopped by this morning to check it out after having a slice of their chocolate mousse/praline cake that a friend brought to a party the previous weekend. First off .... the cake was AMAZING with so much lovely praline and mousse filling. I am planning to order one to bring to Thanksgiving dinner. I kinda wish they sold it by the slice so I could indulge more frequently but also kinda glad that it isn't! After looking online, I discovered that this cafe serves croque madames, which I have rarely seen on a local menu. It was really good and served in environment friendly packaging. I also got the leek and cheese croissant, also tasty. It's tough finding parking in this area but you might be able to put your flashers on right in front of the store to run in quickly. read more

Whereas "greens" feels like something I could buy in a bag at Target. I may try to diversify next time even though I'm dessert-agnostic. She was very impatient and essentially ruined my appetite. When my friend came and she went to order, she had a decent experience. came in on a rainy Saturday morning with my bf and we opted to dine-in. we ordered at the counter and were given a number to put on the table of our choosing. the cafe offered communal seating, as well as larger and smaller tables to fit your group. we got the following to try: -berries danish: sweet, buttery, a nice start! -bacon croissant: with runny egg, avocado, 1/2 strip of bacon. bf liked this but IMO, the 1/2 strip of bacon just seems kinda stingy given the price. -le provencal sandwich: loved the combo of roasted peppers, chicken, basil pesto, and lettuce. however, bread was a little hard and dry. i suspect they didn't make their own baguettes, they looked mass produced. -latte (large): pretty good cup of Joe! overall, i really liked the place but it can be better with some minor tweaks (more bacon, better baguette). it's more of a 3.5 star kinda place but we will be back to try other things. read more

I visited on Sunday for espresso, pastries, and quiche. If I could give them a 3.5, I would because this is a cute little café. The swiss mushroom quiche was tasty! The chocolate almond croissant was standard, but the pistachio almond croissant was majorly lacking pistachio flavour and the marzipan (??) filling was too sweet for me. The espresso was not my cup of tea (too burnt), but I'm a coffee snob and can't fault them or any other American café for my absurd standards. The café is perfectly ambient on a Sunday afternoon with lots of people working and families with small children eating and laughing. I love the French ambiance of cafe Madeline and how they offer some pretty unique quiche and coffee options. Last week, I ordered a vanilla latte, bacon croissant, and a few mini filled donuts. Everything was pretty good except for the fact that I received a regular latte with no flavoring. Not a huge deal as the individual who made it was being trained at the time, but I really missed the sweetness in the beverage. The bacon croissant was AWESOME and melted in my mouth. Adorable new French cafe in Jersey City! I have a feeling that this could become one of my new favorite working spots. And then of course there are some fancier French spots, but those are a little more Saturday night. So needless to say, Cafe Madelaine definitely fills a void in the neighborhood. The menu boasts a variety of sweet and savory options. There are lots of items on display like breads, croissants, pastries, macarons and several varieties of quiches. And then there is a full menu with egg dishes, sandwiches, salads and soups. I ordered a ham and cheese croissant. I didn't order the Croque madame because I know how rich it can be, but this ended up really being the same thing. Lots of melty cheese and lots of bechamel. I was hoping this would be more of a cold sandwich. But, as expected it was super delicious. The plain black coffee was just okay. Foodwise this place has been on point. Although today I was very disappointed with the customer care I was given. I went into the store hoping to purchase a whole quiche. Nowhere does it say I have to pre-order. They had a sign for the price of a quice per slice and per whole pie. So I looked at what pies were available and was going to get that, upon requesting for it, they told me I would have to wait for an hour for it. I was kinda shocked since they had one available so I didn't get why they couldn't just give me the whole pie. Long story short, I had to pay per piece for the quiche and paid 28 dollars more. This cozy cafe and bakery opened in the neighborhood a few months back, bringing coffee and low key French faire to the area. With a selection of macarons, croissants, quiches and other goods on display, I went with a croque-monsieur (a ham and cheese sandwich topped with bechemel sauce and toasted) and an Americano. Crunchy thin crust with light custard is all it needs and it is not overly sweet either so it makes it even more eatable! I dined I'm at Cafe Madelaine this past weekend for brunch. Upon entering, you'll be greeted by a bright and beautiful displace case of pastries and small cakes. There is also ample seating inside the restaurant along with some tables outside. They had a decent variety of quiches to choose from and I decided to try the spinach and goat cheese quiche (upon the staff's recommendation). It was served warm and was pure buttery goodness. I also had an iced cafe au lait which nice as well. My friend ordered a sandwich and some pastries. The pastries were very good and the perfect ending to my meal. My only cons would be that it did take our orders a little while to come out (there were only two other parties there with us) and the price point was just a tad high for the amount of food we received.
