Cute spot for breakfast pastries, Downtown JC is full of cute corner restaurants / bakeries, and Cafe Madelaine is a perfect example. It's a great spot for breakfast pastries, with plenty of room for indoor and outdoor seating. Ironically, we came here right after spending a week in the South of France, and I have to say, Madelaine can hold its own. We shared the Leek and Parmesan Cheese Danish, the Raspberry Croissant and the Chocolate Jumelle. The first two were great quality, but the Jumelle was too thick and doughy for my liking. Will be back to sample their amazing selection of quiches.

After a long time of planning to visit here, I finally decided to drop in to sample some of their pastries and possibly add them to a new blog article. Why the delay? Mainly because it closes early, by 4 PM. But, also because there are many bakeries and cafes in Jersey City now. All of which are slowly creeping toward NYC prices. Making them more of a treat than an everyday indulgence. So, for my first-time visit, I sampled a few items: Blueberry tart, almond pear tart, and a Nutella puff. Both tarts had a very similar flavor with a light taste and sweetness - 4 stars Nutella Puff was very soft and had the perfect balance of sweetness - 5 stars As for the service, no one greeted me upon entry. And yes, there was someone stationed at the counter near the entry. A "bonjour" would have been great, but a "welcome" would have sufficed given that the cashier wasn't busy and the price. As for the ambiance, it is a very clean, modern, and charming cafe. It has ample table seating in the rear inside as well as outdoor seating. As for the prices, most pastries ranged between $5.50 - $8 for a slice or a decent portion. Compared to the $5 churro donut I purchased from a different cafe before visiting here, the prices are expensive but relatively reasonable. Parking? There is street parking. Look around or just walk it from the Grove Street path station. Overall, I'd give this shop 4 stars. The experience didn't "wow" me, but it has a good balance of price and quality, making it a solid spot to treat yourself occasionally. And since the food quality is better than many poser cafes and bistros in the area, with jacked-up prices on basic fare, it is one of my top picks for the neighborhood.

(Delivered 12/11/2022 SU @ 10:00am): Thank goodness this cafe made something suitable for breakfast and brunch! In my quest to explore the various cuisine scenes throughout Jersey City, my friend and I came across Cafe Madelaine for a lazy Sunday post-birthday celebration night out. We weren't in the mood to go anywhere, so I opened the trusted Yelp app, looked for brunch and pastries, and this place came up. The menu looked enticing enough and appeared to pair well with the bottle of champagne we had for such an occasion. With 4-star average reviews and cute yummy food photos, would this cafe be made to captivate our taste buds on a boozy-head exhausted morning!? PURCHASE French Donuts - Plain, Nutella, Raspberry ($1.80ea): Basically a beignet, these 2-3 bite morsels were sugary good and had scrumptious fillings (except for the plain one) which paired well with our champagne https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=lwAUTtRwVKFRq3XFVZBDtA&userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw. Pastries https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=oCPLpdgU6NejqsT64tnkUg&userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw ~Leek & Parmesan Cheese Danish ($4.50): Croissant dough filled with leek and parmesan cheese fondue, this was heartier and could've been a light meal for one. This might've been better if we warmed it up ever so slightly. ~Lemon Poppy Seed Muffin ($3.50): Palm-sized, it packed plenty of lemon and poppy flavors along with a moist sweet bread. ~Chocolate Croissant ($3.75): Filled with sufficient chocolate, this was flavorfully flaky and held its shape as you bit into it. Make sure not to let any of the buttery flakings go to waste; wet your fingertip and pick up every single one! ~Le Provençal Sandwich ($10.00): Made with roasted chicken, roasted peppers, nuts-free homemade pesto, and romaine lettuce between a French crunchy baguette cut in half, this was a fresh healthy meal that was enjoyable but wished it had more of a little bit of everything https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=Noz1OgV8q4XkUxw8f2SP2A&userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw. Le Croque Madame Sandwich w/Salad Combo ($15.00): A hot sandwich made with ham, Swiss cheese, bechamel and a sunny-side up egg on top paired with a side of mesclun, cherry tomatoes and French mustard vinaigrette, this was another wonderful meal while the egg provided a nice touch. Sure, we wished there was more, but it actually was the perfect healthy portion size https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=rzb4Ps6wQEj-C-2_jiWEFg&userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw. SERVICE I easily placed the order using their online portal for a designated delivery time ($2.49 fee), got the confirmation, and about 60 minutes later, a young man was at the doorstep with our order all securely packed up - merci! PARKING (FREE; N/A this instance) This was a moot point in this case since our food was delivered. Otherwise, because I had no idea where this business was located nor have I gone by it, I had no idea about the parking situation whatsoever. I imagined there would be spots along Coles St. as well as the main nearby drag of Newark Ave. and all surrounding side streets. - nuff said. ATMOSPHERE, DÉCOR, AMBIENCE Since I've never seen this business in person, I had no idea what to expect in real life. I guess we had to go out and explore it one day... ATTIRE Totally casual, so I would normally be in a t-shirt, boardshorts, and flip-flops... but I was dressed-down for delivery. OVERALL Cafe Madelaine was a real treat, got us through the morning, and would like to experience it in person (the interior photos are charming) along with a further exploration of their menu. The prices seemed a tad high, everything we ate hit the spot, portion sizes were spot on, a relatively varied menu, and at least the online order and delivery service was efficient. Plus, I always preferred to support small mom & pop businesses. I found very good value based on the prices, service, and experience noted above (TOTAL paid experience was around $47.00 BEFORE any discounts and/or tip). And, they accepted my credit card of choice... AMEX! 4.0 STARS

Had a ham and cheese croissant plus iced latte and both were really good. Loved the decoration and ambiance Will come back Four stars since I thought croissant was a bit overpriced at $9

    Samantha C.

Service is decent, sandwiches are great, coffee is okay. I think this place is super overpriced...$9 for an iced cappuccino. I mean ouch. And sandwich is $9 for a very small portion. Still a decent stop, but think the prices are kind of crazy.

Nothing too extraordinary about the choices me ate. Customer service could have been ALOT better. She also forgot my French donut. Underwhelming to say the least and very stale.

I went with my friend this morning who came late. I ordered first and I asked a simple question about one of the food items and I got a very nasty look from the girl who was at the counter. She was very impatient and essentially ruined my appetite. When my friend came and she went to order, she had a decent experience. So I am not sure if I got a different treatment because of my skin color but I would NOT recommend going to this place. The food is meh.. the matcha was nasty, that girl is rude. Will not go back.

came in on a rainy Saturday morning with my bf and we opted to dine-in. we ordered at the counter and were given a number to put on the table of our choosing. the cafe offered communal seating, as well as larger and smaller tables to fit your group. we got the following to try: -berries danish: sweet, buttery, a nice start! -bacon croissant: with runny egg, avocado, 1/2 strip of bacon. bf liked this but IMO, the 1/2 strip of bacon just seems kinda stingy given the price. -le provencal sandwich: loved the combo of roasted peppers, chicken, basil pesto, and lettuce. however, bread was a little hard and dry. i suspect they didn't make their own baguettes, they looked mass produced. -latte (large): pretty good cup of Joe! overall, i really liked the place but it can be better with some minor tweaks (more bacon, better baguette). it's more of a 3.5 star kinda place but we will be back to try other things.

Hello all I just got back from Montreal and that vibe is still here... it always happens whenever i come back from a beautiful city. Sooo as i was geeking out on croissants & Patisserie...in montreal and i did love it but was not surprised... you know why because i get it as same as a croissants & Patisserie as those in Cafe Madelaine which is not far from me. I will say the most authentic i've had in a chilled out normal spot. Almost every morning i grab something. Place is a gem Awesome people working here Chef is in the back but is always on top of things Cool place to sit outside and prices are in range Not like the city where a croissant is a tooth and nail... Croissant Leeks bisteo & pain au raisan Also salmon benedict Coffeee cappucino... Its a must goo Merci Pardon my french dont know the frenchie names but def wow. Merci

BEST Cafe EVER! The most delicious coffee, the tastiest bakeries (Madeline's & pistachio croissant & Opera Torte, OMG!), and a staff & owner that are friendly and committed, make this place a destination not to be missed! For breakfast, I had the most amazing avocado toast on tender, flakey croissant paired with perfectly done eggs & bacon (not pictured because I inhaled it, lol) and treated myself to delicious Madeline's & a decadent (but light) Opera Torte afterward; #HEAVEN! This cafe is an answer to the question, "Why live in Jersey City?" Enjoy!

This was my parents' first time trying French cuisine. We shared the strip steak, lamb chops, seafood paella, and mussels. Our favorite was the seafood paella. It was done really well, and we had a generous serving of seafood in this dish. All this being said, what none of us liked was the service. The only times we ever saw our server were when she brought us water at the start of our meal and took our order. Outside of that, we were NOT attended to during our meal. No check-ins on how we liked the food, if we needed more water, or if we were ready for the check. I ended up having to stand up from our table and grab another waiter's attention for basic service. Even then, we were still being forgotten. I would come back here for the food, but the service would make me hesitate. Perhaps the service is better during lunch hours, when the restaurant is less busy?

The broth is amazing. I loved every bite of that. Then we got the pastilla and tajine d'agneau. The pastilla is delectable. A must. It's some of the wildest flavor combinations I've ever experienced. You're eating shredded chicken mixed with cinnamon and white powdered sugar. All within phyllo dough. The tajine is fun to try, but it was just OK. It's kind of like a lamb stew. I will give kudos to a very soft and not too chewy Lamb. The prunes and apricots are such a unique flavor duo with these. Couscous is fun. This meal was a 4 for me but everything else, divine.
