DJ Larry is what get me here. He spins every Sunday, at 9pm. He does an amazing job of mixing the right amount of familiar tunes and the right amount of new material. It's different every time, and every bit of what he does makes me want to move. The downside is the grump on the door checking IDs. His manner is brusque and unfriendly. I heard about this place from a friend and go here mainly for the wing deal. It used to be Wednesdays all day for $1 wings, but it switched to Thursday and 5 pm to close now. The inside is basically like a dive bar and they have open mic night on Wednesdays. You order at the bar and they bring you your order. There are restrooms inside as well. I'll still come on Thursday when I have a craving for the wings, which are great btw. They are smoked and I usually get the BBQ and garlic parmesan flavor. Parking is street parking. read more

I went to The Press mostly at the former location 21st & P St during 2019 & early part of the Pandemic. What makes the whole thing work for me at the new location is what made it work before, Sunday CHURCH with Larry Rodriguez aka Flower Vato! The main element are the locals are the regulars! I finally checked out press club yesterday after wanting to go out and not wait! There's plenty of breakfast spots in Sacramento but they're always busy. I remember yall have brunch and stopped in for a good bite. We were 1 or 2 in the restaurant so it made for a nice quiet brunch. Our waitress lovely and very kind. Loved her tattoos!! We got the breakfast burger to split and the Belgian waffle. Both pretty delicious. Definitely will stop by for wings some day soon and comedy read more

We went to the Press Club on a Sunday night for drinks and dancing. It's called Dance Party or Church! We used to go back in the day at the other Press Club location, but have not been to the new location since they relocated two years ago. We liked this venue better than the old venue, it was roomier and it's really nice that the bar area is completely separate and walled off from the room where the dancing is. Some people were semi dressed up, but overall it's pretty casual. We were jeans, t-shirts, and sandals. You can have drinks and conversation in the bar area, and toggle back and forth between the bar area and dance floor, if you hear a song or set you want to dance to. The, DJ Larry (AKA Flower Vato) is such a cool dude. It's seems that everyone either knows, or loves him. He plays a lot of really cool music that you don't typically hear at other venues. Funk, Old School, Latin beats, world music, classic reggae, and a little Motown. He decorates the dance area really cool with black lights, and funky tapestries everywhere. It's a vibe. Beers on tap are reasonably priced at around $7.50, and they have a pretty good selection. We didn't order any food, but looked pretty good for bar food. It's hard to go out on a Sunday night when you have work on the following day, but we had a great time, and can't wait to go back. Maybe less beers next time! We shall see. read more

We were in the area to go to Morning Fork for breakfast. The line to get in was over 30 minutes long so we walked down the street and ran into the press club offering brunch. We looked at the posted menu and decided to go in. It was nearly empty and dark. It's not the most inviting brunch place I've been too. I had no idea they served food, I though they were just a music club. We didn't want to wait for Morning Fork so we took our chance. We were greeted a the door from the bar and were told we could sit anywhere. We picked a table one row away from the window. Still light from the sunlight. We were given waters and menus immediately. The menu was different than the ones posted in the window. I ordered the eggs Benedict with Brisket and the standard Holliday sauce not the chipotle type. There was a medium wait for our dishes. A little slower than expected due to there was so few people in there. They have a good size dining area. There were 3 other parties when we arrived. I was not served the eggs Benedict with Brisket. I was served the chicken dish with Holliday sauce. It was missing the Brisket and English muffin. It just had poached eggs, holliday sauce, a minimal amount of chicken, and potatoes. I was very disappointed being served the wrong meal, but didn't say anything as I didn't want to wait for them to remake it and didn't notice I had the wrong dish till after I started eating it. I felt it was too late to say something and I didn't want to be that complaining customer and I didn't want to put up a fuss in front of my cousin. My cousin ordered the dish I was served but, with the chipotle Holliday sauce on the side. She was served it with the sauce on top. So they didn't get either order right. My dish was still tasty, but I was hungry and really wanted that brisket and English muffin. Even with the mix up the dish was tasty. The poached egg came out hard, the yoke was soft on one of the eggs and fully cooked on the other. The ambiance lacked the perky brunch feel, you felt like you were in a night club. I would have not eaten there if the Morning Fork didn't have such a long line and we didn't drive so far. If I knew of anther place I would have gone there. The waitress was very professional and perky and checked on us many times. They didn't rush us out of there. The place seemed clean just dark. I'm not sure I'd come back due to the ambiance and the mix up of the orders and the sauce being put on top and not on the side as specified. The waitress did realize there mix up on the sauce and offered to take it back. So that was nice of her. read more

As witness of a band who has recently played here and just trying being a regular patron to support small bands, the people who run this joint obviously don't know how to run a business or care about promoting the musical acts they book. Security are short with patrons and seem to just want to smoke outside on the sidewalk, had to wait five minutes to determine what the door price for a show was 15 minutes before they were supposed to play, bad communication with bands and patrons about start times, and they didn't even have a sound guy the night my partner's band played with four bands on the playbill. The bartenders are nice and the bathrooms are usually clean, but that's it. read more

Attended a Blues Society show at the Press Club last night. It was a great experience overall. The employees were all working hard to serve the crowd and were very friendly and accommodating. I am a vegetarian and ordered a burger without meat and it was surprisingly great. It was full of avocado and mushrooms and came with a nice salad. I shared some sweet potatoes fries and they were fresh and hot. The venue was intimate, clean and had good sound. There was room to move around and the air conditioning worked well. I thought parking would be difficult, but there were lots of available spots nearby. I hope to attend more events here in the future. read more

Very cliquish vibe. If you're not part of the regulars' circle, don't expect much acknowledgment from the bar staff. I'm not looking for white-glove service at a dive bar, but basic hospitality shouldn't feel optional. Ironically, they've tried (and failed) to implement cover charges for bar games -- which makes sense when you realize they're not exactly encouraging drink sales. If you're new, you'll likely be ignored, and you can see why people end up just loitering and sipping water like it's a community center. read more

Came here for Emo Night. At first (8p) there was maybe 25 people. At about 1030, there was probably 100. It was a blast! I've been to other emo nights and this one was fun even tho there wasn't a live band this time. Drinks weren't as bad as other reviews say. Customer service was cool. There were 2 really clean single person bathrooms. There's a liquor store maybe 200 ft if u need anything. There were lasers, fog, and passionate people. Music was loud. My heart rate was high. It's been a while since I've gone out dancing, but my girlfriends knew where to go. We got in before cover charge, and by 11, the space was starting to flow with lots of newcomers. On this given Saturday, I would put the average attendee's age as low- to mid-20s, making me on the higher end of the age range but still fun. The DJ for the night - I think his name was DJ Hawk - did a good job playing top 40 along with what I knew as top 40 a full decade earlier. (Ha!) The sound quality in the club isn't stupendous, but the vibe was pretty chill and fun. The cash only aspect of the bar is a bummer. I know a lot of businesses do this, but it's tough when you might be going out for the night. That being said, it didn't look like the bar had a lot of trouble keeping busy! read more

The only reason you're getting four stars on this Yelp is because we enjoyed the show and the food was fantastic. The only complaint I have is that the first time I walked in there it smelled like pee, and the door was left wide open for the pee, smell to come in if it's a buffet place or a place that serves food the door should remain closed when I brought it to the attention of the lady upfront. She seemed offended as if she owned the place instead of being more professional and apologizing For the smell. I clarified to her that inside of the restaurant I did not smell the pee, however, it would make common sense for you to have a plug-in or something so that customers don't have to smell urine upon entering the establishment and the lady upfront needs some customer service training. With that said, I will return with my friends to enjoy the show and the food. Please invest in some plug-ins near the front door and near the funky reception area. It might help her mood a little bit Siri type this up for me so punctuation and such was not fixed. read more

I think I like the Press Club for the same reasons I sort of don't. It's more a dance club than a bar with all the trappings of a modern dance club, including an appeal to mediocre DJs on the busiest nights playing the modern hits people clammer for and the occasional unwarranted cover charge. But it's also the occasional home to fantastic DJs and/or bands playing music you wouldn't hear elsewhere (like reggae and goth nights) and a much needed local dance hall to counter the sterile tube skirt clubs further downtown. That local element is what will keep me coming back. I'd rather have have a slightly run-down place with unpretentious patrons and cheap, stiff drinks than the outrageously overpriced meat market at places like District 30 or Social. It's all a matter of what you're looking for, of course, but I think in terms of personality there is far more to get out of the Press Club than its newer competitors. read more

My friends and I came here last weekend for a bachelorette party. The bride was looking for cheap drinks, dancing, and a good time. I have been to Press Club before, but it has been several years. Not much has changed. There is still cheap drinks and dancing. I will say the music was a disappointment. The marquee advertised Top 40 music on Saturday night. Instead, there was a mash-up of songs that were not in the current Top 40 list. Anyway, I attempted to request a song with the DJ, and he shook his head no at me. He wouldn't even look at my song choice. I was not drunk at this time, so I know I wasn't being obnoxious in my song request. This has been my favorite bar to go dancing at for the past couple years. I went this Saturday to dance. Danced for a few hours when a security guard came up to me and told me that it was getting too crowded and someone had complained that I smelled bad, so I needed to leave. My purse ended up being stolen (my own bad for leaving it with someone I barely knew - it was also later returned though all my money was taken). Security escorted me outside after I couldn't find my bag. (I had no keys, money, or phone) No one offered to let me use their phone to get a ride home. I ended up sobbing outside the bar, because I was so overwhelmed, didn't know what to do and my feelings were so hurt by being kicked out. A man came up to me and kept caressing me on my face and trying to hold me and touch my body ("comfort" me). I started yelling at him to please stop touching me and that I didn't like to be touched, saying this over and over again very loudly, hitting his hands away from me. Security was about 10 feet away from me at the front door and literally did nothing to help me. Considering there are signs all over this bar talking about women's safety and if ladies feel uncomfortable or unsafe that someone will help them. I was shocked that this security guy stood at the front, and just let this man touch me while I yelled at him not to. He did NOTHING. Just stood there and acted like he couldn't hear or see what was going on right next to him. I would have gotten over my hurt feelings about being told I smelled bad, but when I was scared and felt unsafe, all of a sudden that promised protection no longer extended to me because I smelled bad and was sweaty from dancing for hours? Or is it because I was no longer technically in the bar, so there was no need to protect a woman in possible danger because it was outside of his payment zone? I no longer feel safe at this bar whatsoever. Those signs should be taken down, considering it seems the people working there will not stand by those words and protect a woman alone, outside, at night being harassed and touched by a strange man when she's repeatedly screaming stop right next to the entrance. I ran up the street when the man continually wouldn't leave me alone (even tried to follow me at first) sobbed next to traffic with my thumb up until a kind man stopped to help me and get me an uber home. Seriously disappointed and saddened by this experience, especially considering I have loved and thoroughly enjoyed every other time I've ever been dancing here. It was a great spot to dance, but if you decide to go, be extremely cautious because security is not there to keep you safe. read more

If you're lookin for a good casual time with rnb/hip hoping/pop music. This is the place for you! I would say it's generally for a mid twenties to thirties crowd. I came on a Saturday night, their cover is frenbefore ten, $5 after ten. No real dress code. I wore leggings and a comfy long sleeve from old navy. Just came for a night with my girl to get some exercise dancing xD... they had a lot of Christmas decor and lights up so it was a bit bright. Drinks are around a $6 range for maybe a half pint sized cup, they pour pretty heavy though :) so not a bad deal. There's only one restroom for the women's bathroom but thankfully a unisex one as well. So if that one gal is over the toilet, you'll have a backup in case ahha. Will be back here to enjoy some tunes. People are pretty friendly and not too creepy in my experience ! read more

Maybe it's because I've become accustomed to some fabulous dance spots in San Francisco, or maybe we came on an off night, either way this place was anything but "great." The bar is actually well located on either side of the entrance and dance floor for a higher likely hood of finding a break in the line where you can creep up to the front and make eyes with the bartender so he knows you mean business and will be spending some coin on shots and cocktails throughout the night so he better take care of you. I found this particular bartender to be really friendly and attentive (I never had to wait longer than 2 minutes to be served...and the place was packed that night!) so that's where their 2nd star was issued. Other than the friendly bartender, this place was a disappointment: To start, the dance floor is rather small which makes it even harder to not bump in to the sweaty greasy slime ball "dancing" next to you. There is absolutely no air flow, minus the fan in the very back that's blocked the entire night by whoever was smart enough to plant their dancing party in front of, which means EVERYONE is extremely sweaty and stinky. Gross. The DJ was playing a mix between 80's and the top 40's on iTunes which I could have done just as easily if there was an iPod hookup. The bathroom was the biggest kicker. Really?? ONE stall in the women's bathroom? Really?? We left before 12:30, not because we weren't the hottest girls in the entire place, because we were (which doesn't say much given the quality of their standard patrons. I'm going to hell, I know.), but because there was a 20 minute wait for the bathroom!! Not smart. Why don't you take the $5 you're charging everyone to get in and install another toilet!! ....just a thought I was fortunate enough to have my amazingly awesome girlfriends with me so, despite these set backs, we actually had a fabulous, sweaty, dance-erific time. I have had many unpleasant experiences at this establishment, particularly with the bouncers. Last night was the second time my friends have gotten removed from the bar unfairly and the bouncers escalated the situation. He was dancing with his shirt unbuttoned, to which the bouncer asked for him to button back up (which he did) and then made an OBVIOUS joke about the bouncer being jealous. The bouncer proceeded to go absolutely ballistic and dragged him out of the bar despite the fact that my friend was fully coherent and apologizing for upsetting him. He then proceeded to get in his face, antagonize our group of friends, and threatened to hit my friend several times (my friend is 5'6 and maybe 140 pounds, this man was at least twice his size). I am repulsed by the terrible conduct the bouncers at Press Club continue to carry out. They are disrespectful, unprofessional, and clearly on a power trip from working at one of the lamest bars in Sacramento. The music also sucks and the place is gross. It's also an enormous inconvenience that they are cash only. I will not be returning. read more

The Press Club has quickly become my most frequented venue in Sacramento. Great variety of nights, big dance floor, analog DJ equipment for us vinyl folks, and excellent staff. I got to meet the owner while in here and he's a really nice guy, so is the staff. Like I said before, tall boys. They're only $2!!! Press club has been around for while. With the new wave of changes that's been going through Sacramento, it's only a matter of time before they close down. Service is awful, the take cash only (yes, in 2018), the bouncers are "wanna be" tough guys that'll rough you up if they want to, and they've got a cockroach problem. Not just a regular roach infestation, it these are giant cockroaches which you can see on the photo I've attached. However, the only credit I'll give them is they've got great music...that's it. Ive been coming here for years... this is a great spot to dance and have a tall can of Pabst. Dress as you please and ignore the Douche bags that sometimes show up on friday and Saturdays. The bartenders, Randy and Susan are awesome. Be good to them and they will be good to you. Come before 10pm and you can get in for free. The only downside is that they have a tiny bathroom with only one stall and the wait can get pretty long when its crowded. read more

When weighing options in downtown it usually is more towards the bottom of the list. Chances are you go when you know someone else going. Which is a bit contradictory but still makes perfect, logical sense. This past Friday night I was left with a sour taste in my mouth, similar to the smell of the men's bathrooms here. Let me first start by saying I've got nothing against Press Club. I've always had a good time. Plenty of people on the dance floor, great mix of ethnicities getting along for the most part and cover is only $5. The problem with my latest visit is that the wait for a cocktail was ridiculous. I spent valuable time waiting to order a drink, valuable time that could have been spent finding my next dance partner. I was passed on despite the bartender knowing I was waiting. I understand it gets busy and maybe I'm overreacting a bit but the whole process of ordering a drink put me in a bad mood. Before that I was pretty upbeat. I will say once I did get my drink in had it was strong and got the job done. Once I did finish my drink I had to use the restroom. Upon walking in the small space called the men's room I was greeted by what smelled like wet dog. It smelled horrible. The manager makes no effort in making sure the restrooms here are cleaned at all and that alone is disgusting. The music here was a great mix of new hip hop and older R&B. Pretty fun and got everyone singing along and dancing At one point there was an altercation on the dance floor in which a man was slapped by a woman. At no point did security intervene. And I don't blame them. They get paid minimum wage, and sneaking a weapon in here would be too easy. That coupled with how crazy people are nowadays, I can see why unless it's really necessary does security go the extra measure. This again is why management here isn't thinking. They risk the safety of others for the almighty dollar. Yes I'll admit I'll be back here, but probably because the women here lose their inhibitions and as a single man I'm with that. read more

The Press Club is a lot of fun. Lines are not too bad when you come here before 10 PM and it is only a $5 cover charge. Easily the least expensive club you'll visit. You walk in and they have televisions on the walls that play vintage commercials and cartoons. There is one bar, a nice sized dancing area and a dj. The dj plays music from the 80s and 90s; usually the top 40 hits from that era. Before 10 o' clock there is only a few people on the dance floor; later in the night around 11 pm there are tons of people to the point where you are literally bumping into them. Everybody seems to be in a good mood and the dj plays loads of fun music that gets everybody dancing. The dj also plays old school hip hop like snoop dog, dr Dre, and Tu PAC. It's a novelty club, but there are too many indie-wannabe-emo college kids that go here. The inside is small, stuffy, but after a few deep breaths you will forget that there there is probably a thick smog of aerosoled vomit and fecal particulate matter floating all around you. I tried to just breathe though my mouth, but started feeling wheezy. Still not bad depending on who you're with, your level of intoxication, and which band/music night you show up on. I would look elsewhere first though. read more

Press Club has been one of my favorite places to hang out since I moved to Sacramento four years ago. Whether I'm in the mood for cheap drinks, good service, a lack of pretentious d-b's in the crowd, gettin' my groove on or just rocking out there is nowhere else in midtown that can deliver all of these things. It's not fancy, it's not overpriced. It's a bar with a good rotation of DJs and some pretty darn good bands coming through. There's occasionally a door charge but it goes to the performer and I'm more than happy to pay for real live entertainment. read more
