a close up of a sandwich

Honestly...I was so, so excited for this opening. Sadly, I was deeply disappointed. I mean, there were probably two people in the store....and 5-6 people working when I ordered. Simple order, one hoagie...very straightforward. Turkey, Parma, Sharp Prov, LTO, Oren and RWV. That's it. I waited 10 minutes. Was handed a very light, wrapped and very small paper wrapped sandwich. I thought..."this feels small and light". But also, it wasn't even wrapped in a carry bag. Not great. But not knowing how this place works (portions, quality, etc.), I was still holding out hope. I was hungry and excited when I opened the wrap, as me and my boys settled at a fishing spot to nosh. One thin sliver of Prosciutto, No LTO, No RWV. Stale Bread. VERY Small Portion. Just meat and cheese....no toppings. Not care. AT ALL. I was beyond disappointed and insulted as a customer that a NEW, highly anticipated place.....in a space previously occupied by a very well respected and well loved deli and BBQ spot.....was this terrible. Lacking in care, detail or even executing a minimal topping order...how abysmal. I am someone who enjoys to give kudos and super love to deserving and well run businesses, this was too bad to overlook a very bad mention. I do hope that this is a learning curve and encourage real quality and high standards. If not, this place will not last. $10.65 for an absolute, disappointing mess. I felt sorry that I strayed from Jersey Mike's who is forever consistent in its amazing quality, cost and freshness....no matter the location. Please Do Better. Just Terrible.

The tuna crudo was fresh with nice acidity, and I loved the plate it came on. The foie gras was extremely rich and savory, and the risotto underneath was cooked perfectly. The rabbit ragú is such a unique dish. The pasta was perfectly cooked, the rabbit was so tender, and the sauce was excellent. Not pictured is their take on fries, which are thick but still extremely crispy and delicious. We were between the orange dessert and the chocolate cake, and they surprised me by bringing us both, which is indicative of how good the service was. ***If there's one review you should read before deciding to come here, it's this one. I'm about to…read morewax poetic.*** Let me preface by saying that I'm a young adult who considers himself a bit of a foodie. I work in Times Square so I usually frequent fine dining establishments in the city, but my home is North Jersey so I am acutely aware that there are some hidden gems in this state. Last week, I was at the Saddle River Inn in Saddle River and was blown away. But this place is far, far, even more exceptional. Greatest dining experience ever. Called the restaurant due to a last-minute cancelation in my party. Evan, a manager, was super helpful in waiving any cancelation fees. It's BYOB and there's a brewery across the street that apparently does takeout. I just brought beer from my house. They gave me chilled glasses and a bucket of ice to keep my refreshments chilled. Onto the ambience. You walk in and it's a nice, cozy little place with tables and a bar top with an open kitchen layout behind it. You can see all the food that's cooking and the presentations that go behind each dish - all live in front of you. The chef's were busy but always obliged when I said hey or asked a question. I tried the 5 course chef's tasting menu for $125. You get a little bit of all of the best flavors coming out of the kitchen. And the flavors are always changing. They source their ingredients from local farms. First came out complimentary course #1 - all I remember is it had crudo in it. Then course #1 - gulf shrimp with squid. This is the point where I decide no matter how else dinner plays out, I'm coming back. What fresh ingredients and creative flavor pairings. Next was course #2 - duck confit spring roll. It's just a smaller portion of what's regularly on their menu. This may have been my favorite item of the night. Next was wood fired octopus in tagliatelle pasta. After that, I believe, was complimentary course #2 - what appeared to be a caesar salad. Anything they make is delicious. Finally, I had an American wagyu strip as the fourth course. Absolutely delectable. At this point, I'm in Heaven. But I'm not quite yet full and ready for my dessert - profiteroles - one of my favorite desserts. I was looking forward to it from the moment I walked in and saw it listed on the tasting menu. I only eat 1 meal a day so when I finally eat, I eat a lot. A normal person would be full at this point, but I wanted more. I also couldn't help but think it might have something to do with me not wanting to leave and just try anything this kitchen made. So I ordered more. I asked for their regular menu and ordered some more duck confit spring rolls and some type of pork belly entree. Quick note - the pork belly entree was not good. You have to take the losses on the chin to make the wins matter more. Pork belly over beans? It was like bbq ribs meets an English breakfast. Please get rid of that, respectfully. After 3 bites, I didn't want any more so I quietly flagged down my server, Kat, and told her please quietly take this, I fully intend to pay for it since I ordered it; it's just no good. And I had been raving to her about every dish up until that point. So she insisted that she'd take it off the check. I insisted I'd pay, she kept insisting, so I relented. That's really good customer service. Now time for dessert. I wish I could say I was ending on a better note but the Profiteroles - which I mentioned is a favorite dessert of mine - massive disappointment. After everything else was put together for care, I got notes of freezer for this last one - especially the pumpkin part. I love this restaurant and I intend on returning as soon as possible, so please don't take offense to my constructive criticism. I applaud your efforts to infuse different flavors together. It is working wonders for you. Keep it up. I'm gonna share pictures of everything, including the menu. But the last 2 things I'll talk about are the cost and the service. With the pork belly entree taken off, it was just the 5 course tasting menu, an order of duck confit spring rolls, and a $6 double espresso. The total came out to $168 after taxes. I tipped $168. That's right. 100%. In a world where people like to dock tip percentages from their precious "20%" for what they perceive to be a lack of good service, let's normalize going above 25% for exceptional service. Not everyone can afford 100% like me, but next tip tip your servers 30-35% for exceptional service. As a former server in my heyday, I promise it'll mean more to them than the few extra dollars to you. And exceptional service is what I got. From manager Evan, to server Kat, to all of the others I met - forgive me if I forget any names. Chef Kelly, Chef Mike, Chef Jon, Keira, Jimmy. Thank you for an unforgettable 5-star experience. Keep up the exceptional work. I will see you again soon.

We were able to make a reservation, and the restaurant was kind enough to extend our reservation when we were delayed -- especially on one of their busiest nights of the week. Maria was exceptionally nice and helpful in making reservations. Food was delicious and enjoyable throughout all the courses. The Picanha and Beef Short Ribs were my favorites of the Rodizio. My parents split a steak entree and the salmon - the restaurant was kind enough to split both entrees on two plates for each of them. Both servings were generous. Had an Old Fashioned and a Caipirinha - both were excellent. They also have an extensive wine and whiskey menu. Service was pretty good. I would say the only hiccup was the food took forever to come, which seems strange for Rodizio. But I attribute the delay to the tardiness of two folks in our party, and a little inexperience of our server. But aside from that, he did a good job. We got to meet the manager Tatiana, who was fabulous - you can tell she cares about her craft, and the owner Joe, who was exceptionally kind and friendly. My niece and his son apparently went to the same school, so it was truly nice to make the acquaintance. I love to support small business, and it doesn't get better than this. But anyway, we're not here for interior design, we're here to eat. There's a LOT going on here, menu wise and vibe pwise, but in a good way. I ordered the Sandwiches de Miga 'Olímpico' and if you haven't tried them yet, that's a personal failure you can still fix. They're a must. Soft, classic, comforting... except for the edges. The edges were... questionable. Hard/frozen-ish. Not blaming anyone directly, maybe the fridge settings were on "Antarctica," maybe they weren't fully thawed. We'll never know. But that first bite hurt emotionally. It was like ordering a burger without pickles, taking a confident bite, and BOOM! pickle. Suddenly your whole day shifts slightly off center. Service wise: the guy at the counter stared at me, I started my order with zero greeting, felt like human self checkout, and I'm fine with that. Sometimes you don't want conversation, you just want carbs. Despite the frozen edge plot twist, I'm 100% coming back. The food has real potential, the place has character, and I need to try their asado.

In the dining room, where we were seated, there was our table of two, another table of two and a table of three. The other two tables were at the end of their meals. Our server, who also greeted us at the door, was more interested in looking at his smart phone than seating us. He gave us the dinner menus, instead of lunch menus which was a sign of things to come. It was almost 1/2 hour before the server returned to take our order. At this point the two other tables of patrons were gone. We ordered a Wedge salad and French onion soup for starters. The Wedge salad was perfect, except for the large piece of Italian bread served with it which was charred, but edible out of desperation. The onion soup was TASTELESS and the cheese on the top of it was BURNT, blackened to the extent there was no mistaking whoever prepared it was not paying attention when they made it and had no problem sending it out to be served burnt. Against my better judgment, and further desperation, I ate the tasteless, burnt soup. For the main course, we had a turkey club and mussels Fra Diavolo. The "fra diavolo" sauce had no kick to it at all. They might as well have called the dish mussels in marinara sauce. The turkey club, which was ordered with no mayonnaise, had almost NO turkey on it ~ no exaggeration ~ there was only one thin slice of turkey on it! I should have sent it back immediately, but I took my first bite and then signaled for the iPhone obsessed server. I asked him for the manager and he panicked as if he did something wrong. I assured him the problem was with the food, although I should have reported him for his inability to put his iPhone down and do his job. The manager came to our table asking how she could help and I showed her the sandwich pointing to the lack of turkey. She agreed that the club sandwich was very much in need of its main ingredient -- turkey. She apologized and took my plate and said she would order me another. About 20 minutes later, our iPhone loving server returned with a new turkey club with the appropriate amount of turkey on it. We were offered no compensation for the first embarrassed turkey club which was almost sans turkey, not that we were looking for some type of compensation, but any type of gesture would have been nice. It has been years since we last ate at the Public House since moving from the area, but this will definitely be our last visit. I wouldn't recommend the place to anyone, even if the food were free. Be forewarned...you would have a more satisfying meal from a fast food restaurant!
