Do not waste your time going here ~ be warned. We went for lunch on a Tuesday afternoon around 1:00 pm. It was not crowded, almost empty. In the dining room, where we were seated, there was our table of two, another table of two and a table of three. The other two tables were at the end of their meals. Our server, who also greeted us at the door, was more interested in looking at his smart phone than seating us. He gave us the dinner menus, instead of lunch menus which was a sign of things to come. It was almost 1/2 hour before the server returned to take our order. At this point the two other tables of patrons were gone. We ordered a Wedge salad and French onion soup for starters. The Wedge salad was perfect, except for the large piece of Italian bread served with it which was charred, but edible out of desperation. The onion soup was TASTELESS and the cheese on the top of it was BURNT, blackened to the extent there was no mistaking whoever prepared it was not paying attention when they made it and had no problem sending it out to be served burnt. Against my better judgment, and further desperation, I ate the tasteless, burnt soup. For the main course, we had a turkey club and mussels Fra Diavolo. The "fra diavolo" sauce had no kick to it at all. They might as well have called the dish mussels in marinara sauce. The turkey club, which was ordered with no mayonnaise, had almost NO turkey on it ~ no exaggeration ~ there was only one thin slice of turkey on it! I should have sent it back immediately, but I took my first bite and then signaled for the iPhone obsessed server. I asked him for the manager and he panicked as if he did something wrong. I assured him the problem was with the food, although I should have reported him for his inability to put his iPhone down and do his job. The manager came to our table asking how she could help and I showed her the sandwich pointing to the lack of turkey. She agreed that the club sandwich was very much in need of its main ingredient -- turkey. She apologized and took my plate and said she would order me another. About 20 minutes later, our iPhone loving server returned with a new turkey club with the appropriate amount of turkey on it. We were offered no compensation for the first embarrassed turkey club which was almost sans turkey, not that we were looking for some type of compensation, but any type of gesture would have been nice. It has been years since we last ate at the Public House since moving from the area, but this will definitely be our last visit. I wouldn't recommend the place to anyone, even if the food were free. Be forewarned...you would have a more satisfying meal from a fast food restaurant! read more

Came here on a Saturday afternoon after Apple picking at Alsted Farms a few minutes away. It was about at 3:30 or so and the place was not packed. Good thing for us because we walked in and needed a table for 15 people. They confirmed twice the number of people were correct. In less than 10 minutes, they had us all seated. Our waiter was a younger gentleman and was completely attentive and courteous. He answered all our questions on the food and provided any recommendations he could. He was too young to provide cocktail recommendations, but that was totally fine with us. The venue had a great old school steakhouse vibe. There were antique pieces throughout the place. He was friendly, on point with timing, and knew the menu and cocktail list inside and out, so much so that it's worth specifically requesting Sterling when you make a reservation or when you're seated. He even recommended my (and his) favorite specialty cocktail, which ended up being the perfect drink to go with the meal.​ I ordered the Delmonico King Cut steak and it came out a perfect medium rare--flavorful, tender, and cooked exactly as requested. My wife's parmesan‑crusted chicken was also fantastic, with great seasoning and a really nice crisp on the outside.​ The specialty cocktails were fun and inventive, which fits perfectly with their strong craft cocktail program and full bar. We were looking for a restaurant offering fine dining and a classic atmosphere. The PH Steakhouse scored highly on most all points. Our steaks were delicious and the waitstaff was excellent. The service was more than leisurely, perhaps even slow, which I attributed to a backup due to inadequate staffing in the kitchen. Our toddler grandchildren, happily, were very well behaved and ate like horses. Interestingly, the two other tables in the room with toddlers were also quiet and well behaved. A full bar and a decent wine selection is also a huge plus. This lovely restaurant exudes atmosphere. It is a wonderful venue, albeit very expensive. I ordered a delmonico Ribeye. Never got a place setting or silverware. Finished my Manhattan and ordered a glass of goldschmidt cab. Bottle was probably opened way too long and couldn't drink it. Bartender opened a new bottle and it was fine but warm. High end steakhouse should cuvee their wines for proper temperature. Steak was fine but nothing spectacular. ate lunch here today. I ordered the Caesar salad with Salmon, husband fish and chips. Server, after a long time, came to say fish & Chips were sitting under the lights; Chef forgot to cook my salmon. I said please bring fish and chips out so he could eat fresh. after a while Server brought my Salmon and Caesar out. all smiles. I cut the fish down the middle to see it was raw. I have an allergy to uncooked fish (sushi) , showed our Server and by that point just asked for the plain salad. note- the restaurant was NOT busy. I let him know I use a food their other at home and didn't understand why the Chef did not. When my salad came I took 2 bites and, with no protein, just got very upset and walked out. This was a disappointing experience overall. The first hiccup was a miscommunication about the reservation and the restaurant tried to cancel the reservation after the booking was made. After arriving, the service was slow and the server indicated they were short staffed. One steak at the table was supposed to be cooked medium well. It came out rare and had to be sent back not once but twice to be corrected. Two medium rare hamburgers were ordered at the table. One came out well done and the other was medium. As a steakhouse, cooking meat to the desired temperature be paramount to an excellent customer experience. Upon getting the bill I thought it was tacky and in bad taste to add a credit card surcharge, especially after such poor service. On a positive note, the sides were good. read more

We stayed at this hotel & ate at this restaurant twice during New Year's weekend. First of all, if you love historical places, this place is for you! The building was built in 1810 & has been a hotel & restaurant for over 200 years (except when it was turned into a school for a few years). The food & drinks here are also excellent. I forgot to take pictures of all our plates but I got some. The rooms, in the historic part of the building/the front of the building, are gorgeous. It was amazing to be staying where people of the Regency & Victorian era stayed. The staff here is very cheerful, polite & helpful, especially Chris (the hotel manager/owner?) We had a great stay & I can't wait to go back. Btw, the town of Chester is great too! There are a lot of shops & restaurants surrounding the hotel & most of them are in historical/historical-looking building too. There are also a ton of antique shops, family farms & shopping centers nearby. It's a great weekend getaway. But, if you go overnight, stay at the Public House. It's beautiful & memorable. read more

Disappointing. Came last year and the service was good and the food even better. Tonight that was not the case. Live music in the bar was so loud we couldn't hear ourselves, so we sat in the dining room. Waitress messed up our drink order and then couldn't remake it because they were out of supplies. Our meals came out and were also wrong (fries were not substituted where asked, a plate was not split, baked potato was served naked...) The last straw was the salt shaker was grossly dirty. When the live music ended, they started playing oldies rock n roll in the dining room- hardly fine dining ambiance. I read through the reviews before deciding to go here, but I had a gift certificate so it really didn't affect or impact my decision either way. We went there this evening with a 6 PM reservation, and we were instantly seated in the dining room to the North, the red room. I was pleased by the seating, as they did have a musician playing by the bar area and we kind of wanted a quiet dinner. I was very happy that the volume was barely noticeable, but you could tap your foot to your favorite song if you chose. There were a few other occupied tables in this room, so it was a very nice quiet experience. My wife started with the tomato and onion salad, and I got the fried calamari. Excellent quality all around, but I was hopeful for more calamari for the $15 price. I think it's criminal that we were charged $14 for three or four slices of tomato and the same amount of onion slices. What is that, less than two dollars food cost? I think they really need to rethink the cost of the appetizers. As to the calamari, I know other area restaurants that have about double the portion for $12. It was well prepared and tasty, served with very good marinara sauce. My wife ordered the petite fillet, opting for onion rings to replace the vegetables. I chose the bone-in prime rib, medium rare, and was so delighted that it was cooked to absolute perfect temperature. It was a feast for the eyes, and tremendously zesty with just the right amount of seasoning and not too much cutaway fat. It's also nice to see a steakhouse that provides mashed potatoes and vegetables with most of the meat dishes, which is rare. Most are fully a-La carte. I would put this steak against Ruth's Chris for quality any day. I just had bottled beer, but my wife had a very good Martini that was accented with blue cheese-covered olives. She enjoyed it tremendously. We skipped dessert, maybe next time. Our server was Don, who was extremely helpful and attentive. Stopped here on 1/14/24 on a slow Sunday evening with my wife and our friend. As soon as we walked in and sat at the bar, we weren't even greeted. Not a "Hi, how are you" or anything. Just a basic "what can I get you?" from the young woman behind the bar. You could tell by her face that she didn't want to be there or help us. Not good. This is a problem already. If you're a "steakhouse", I expect steakhouse service. I've dined at plenty of real steakhouses in the past couple of months and the service has always been exceptional regardless of the establishment....until this place. We order drinks and two appetizers. Chips and guac and the seafood tower. The presentation for the chips and guac was pathetic. The guac was served inside half of an avocado shell. Not practical for sharing or even dipping. It just came off as sloppy and lazy. Back to the service - the bartender didn't even bring us plates. We made it known we were sharing the appetizers. You think she would bring out some plates - nope, we had to ask. Where is the SERVICE??? Then comes the seafood tower. You can absolutely determine that this was all frozen seafood. It was rather bland looking/tasting and icy. We made the call to leave and have dinner at Chesapeake where the food and SERVICE were fantastic. Won't be returning that's for sure. read more

We were happy to finally stop in since they reopened with new owners! But..the positive pretty much ends there, unfortunately. We came in for lunch on a gorgeous day and sat in the porch. There was one other party of two out there. Not within their control, but it was incredibly loud with all of the traffic going by. It's a shame because it was quite nice sitting outside! The service was really poor, despite how dead it was. We had to ask multiple times for everything (silverware, drink refills, etc). We shared the TriBerry Salad to start and then both had our own entrees. They forgot the dressing on the salad. And there was about a 1/4" of water in the bottom of the bowl, which was really gross. I had the Turkey Burger, which was fine. And my husband had the Cuban, which was also just fine. Strangely, the menu said it had pulled pork on it (which would've been odd), and it did not (thankfully). Even my soda was flat. The whole meal was a bit expensive for being such a less-than-stellar dining experience all around. There are just too many great local options. We likely wouldn't come back. read more

Came here on a Saturday night with a reservation. I ordered the pork chops which was absolutely delicious. We also ordered tuna poke, bacon, slab, and a full steak. The steak was really good. Their chicken dishes are massive. They're almost an entire chicken and very well cooked not dry at all. The wine was good as well but the one that we were interested in having they were sold out of so we had to get a less than nice bottle. We sat in front of the fireplace which was a nice ambiance. The service was also excellent. You have to pay for all sides. We ordered the mashed potatoes and Brussels sprouts. I LOVED the Brussels sprouts. The desserts were okay. The toffee pudding cake was nothing like toffee pudding. The Apple crumb was good, but not the best. I would definitely go again! read more

Before we even ordered we knew we liked this place. Found it was from 1810 and they had some cool old decor. We were seated in a cozy room, and were immediately greeted by our server, Joe, who was adorable in every way and helpful with suggestions. Salads were fresh and crisp. Formerly the Historic Chester Publick House, this place has been revived and renovated to be an upscale steakhouse. My co-worker and I came here for lunch and although I have read the negative reviews, we actually liked it a lot. The atmosphere was great, especially nice and festive since this was right before Christmas and had a warm cozy feel. The service was a bit slow but we ate in the bar area and our server, who was also the bartender, was so nice, very friendly and made us a couple of wonderful craft cocktails. For lunch my co-worker went with their Cuban Sandwich made with roast pork, ham, Swiss cheese, dijon mustard, pickle on Cuban bread. It also came with delicious fries and although this is something you normally don't find on an Irish steakhouse menu, she thoroughly enjoyed it. I went with the Open Faced Steak Sandwich, sliced NY Strip, caramelized onions, Swiss cheese served on a nice garlic bread and also came with a side of fries. This was delicious, everything cooked perfectly. I do agree with some of the reviews saying it was a bit pricey, but overall this was a great experience and I look forward to coming here again. read more

I understand that as we are in the bar are. However, 3 tables sat after us and were greeted first. No biggy tried to still enjoy Ordered 2 apps and drinks and entrees all at same time Around 6:45. Apps came out around 7:10. It was 8:10 and still not steaks. Server was coming over many times at the point. I think he realized everyone around us had gotten there food. 20 minutes later I said sorry we need the check we can't wait anymore. An hour at 15 minutes for food is insane. No manger acknowledged us no apology at all Will not be back here. Treated like we were scum. Do not eat here. The chop salad was really good with taste, but visually it was underwhelming unfortunately. The bread on the table was good although we didn't get bread plates like other tables did we were convinced that the chef is soaking the fillet in a salt bath, because throughout the meat of both of our steaks it was very very, very, very, very salty. We couldn't even finish fillet because of the saltiness, although my golden retriever loved the leftovers. As far as the ambience goes, they could do some upgrades inside as well when we looked up at the light above our table and noticed wasps and bees dead in the light shade.
