Got invited for some friends to try Primos MX kitchen for the first time. Sat at the bar and the service was 8/10! I had to ask for water a couple of times but other than that the service was good. The ambiance is cute it can be good for a drink after work to dating. The parking was really hard because it's no designated parking for the restaurant. Came here for a late dinner with a few girlfriends after our original plans went downhill. Even though the whole night leading up to this was not ideal, finally ending up here made it all worth it! It was super cute and cozy inside. Also, all employees were wearing masks and social distancing was clearly in effect so that definitely put us all at ease. This location closes at 1:00 am on Saturdays and while we arrived around 10:30 and were informed that the kitchen closed at 11:00. So FYI - keep that in mind in case you think you're going to slide through here at midnight for a drunken late night snack after running the streets, NOT GONNA HAPPEN! Anyway - our server Cameron was so sweet and helped us get all of our orders in before it was too late! He was very gracious and informative and didn't make us feel rushed at all. I ordered the carne asada fries and they were DELICIOUS!! They definitely didn't skimp on the toppings and I really appreciated that. I also had the primo villa dip, which is basically a loaded queso with beef, avocado, pico de gallo, and crema! I completely forgot to take a photo but it was absolutely fantastic!! I wanted to like this place so much. The space, the patio, the decor, etc. is just beautiful. Now, I know decor shouldn't influence my expectations of a place but it certainly did here and it was a let down. The margarita specials are excellent and they were very good. Unfortunately, the few items we tried on a foodie tour visit here was some of the blandest Mexican food I've ever tasted. Being a NM-native, I try to keep a very open mind when trying Mexican/Tex-Mex, etc. anywhere other than NM. While everything had the potential to be great here, it just fell flat. The constant theme was everything was terribly underseasoned and just flavorless. Just a few small tweaks could have really completely changed this- a touch of salt, some extra lime juice, just...something to brighten everything up. The salsa for the chips and salsa looked excellent and fresh but was severely lacking. Some cilantro (or more of it), lime, jalapeno, a touch of salt, and some onion would've been a game changer. The tacos we had pretty much had the same issues. The chicken and beef were obviously marinated in something but I could only really tell by color only. Somehow the pickled red onions had almost zero flavor except sweet and didn't resemble what they should taste like at all. The shredded cheese blend didn't add anything- a cotija or even feta would've added much more. I hardly ever add salt to my food but even doing that and adding a bit of lime couldn't save it. Overall, very disappointing but I'd definitely check it out for drinks and the very cool atmosphere. read more

My first time visiting Primos was definitely a success. My fiancé and sister came along with me as we embarked on $2 Tuesday! What's that you might try ask? Well, on Tuesdays, Primo's has this awesome deal of $2 margaritas!!! I was so happy because margaritas are my favorite drink. Once we got the drinks rolling it was time to pick some food. I got the carne asada fries. It's under the appetizer menu, but it could definitely be an entree. It was loaded with all the good stuff. I was so full from it I couldn't even finish. I don't get on Yelp very often, but when a place is great or absolutely horrible, I feel compelled to write a review. My recent experience at this place was, quite possibly, the most disgusting and infuriating Tex-Mex dining experiences in my life. Outside, you're compelled to pay $15.00 to park for one hour in a lot across the street with no crosswalk. If you make the jaywalk without getting runover by a car, your horrible destination awaits. I should have walked out immediately, given that there were only a couple tables seated on a pleasant Saturday night (a sign not heeded, to my dismay). Do not go here to eat food. Any food. The menu is 3/4 drinks; the ones our party had were rancid and borderline vomit-inducing. Our party ordered a variety of food items, and every single thing was utter garbage. Let's get to the food. Plentiful chips -- I'll give them that -- but the two salsas that came with them were awful and too similar to really warrant serving both. One is basically water with tomato flavor -- the sauce wouldn't stick to any chip. The other, also tomato-based, was so sweet, barely had any texture, and seemingly put into a blender with an amount of smoke added in to blast it into high holy hell. Disgusting. To start, we ordered the "gussied up" queso (Primo Villa Dip) with all the additives. Poor choice. It arrived cold and congealed, and the additives had no flavor. Also had the guacamole, which, quite frankly, tasted like a plain, obliterated avocado. $30 already down the drain (nay - $45 if you include parking). Oh, and the flautas -- don't go anywhere near those. Flavorless. We ordered tacos, enchiladas with all the available sauces (no Chile con Carné or Chile con Queso on a friggin' Tex-Mex menu?), a Chile Relleno, and someone had the Carne Asada. To be frank, the ground beef in the tacos was greasier than Vaseline; the chicken was bland; the brisket was gamey; and the cheese in the enchilada tasted like melted Kraft American cheese slices. The sauces didn't help: Verde tasted like water; Roja much the same (with a hint of tomato); Crema didn't even taste like sour cream; and the Queso reminded me of pure butter. Just abysmal. The Carne Asada was tough, difficult to chew, and swallow. (Water was never refilled by anyone). The worst part: the Chile Relleno. Hands down, this is the worse Tex-Mex item I have ever put in my mouth. Battered (I'm in the non-battered camp, but whatever), it came out as a pile of mush. No crispiness. The pepper itself disintegrated when trying to put it on a utensil, the filling was garbage, and the "side sauces" were basically A1, a horrible non-buttermilk RANCH DRESSING??? (probably Ken's), and more of the sickening salsa. Pico de Gallo was present, but they used red onions instead of white, which makes it inherently more watery. Bleh. All that, and most of our orders came out with defects. One enchilada plate had everything wrong: one person ordered a Crema beef enchilada, a Cheese enchilada with Roja, and a Brisket with Verde...with only beans and no rice. What came out was: a Cheese enchilada with crema, a Chicken enchilada with Queso, a Brisket enchilada with Roja, and double rice. We didn't bother sending that back. Plus, the tortillas used for the enchiladas were about 4" long -- mini flautita-sized. I'm all for giving places a second chance, but this was so putrid, I won't be back. Finally -- Primo's MX Kitchen est. 1986 is bull****. This "Primos" was established around the start of 2020. A company simply bought the old name, made it look "nice" (not really -- everything in the damn place is brown; money not well-spent), and called it a day. The "old" Primo's is basically E Bar -- a hop, skip, and a jump away. That place is packed nightly; this place is going to be short lived. No wonder the Preston Hollow location closed so quickly -- Dallasites can spot bad Tex-Mex from a mile away and, if consumed, will never go back. I wish I had the warning ahead of washing my money down the drain. Avoid. read more

Garbage experience - Stopped in on a Tuesday night for $5 margs and tacos. Took the hostess 15 minutes just to get our name and party size. Restaurant was visibly empty behind her? Took over 45 minutes to get a table, and the waiter basically told us we could get tortillas with some stuffing in it, no cheese, no lettuce, no tomatoes. They seemed extremely short staffed or something. They were apologetic and brought us some free queso, but also served us stale, cold food and were acting like they had hosted a party that got too big for them or something. Don't go. read more

I used to really like this place, but then I went on Cinco de Mayo and I don't think I'll ever go back. It was a pretty terrible experience. We didn't get seated until 50 minutes after our reservation time (original reservation time was 7pm, and we weren't seated until 8:50pm). Our server didn't come by until 30 minutes after that (so around 8:20pm). Our orders were completely wrong when our server rang them in (even after repeating them to her multiple times). I then asked her to revise my ticket so I could wait in line for my food, and our server came back with the wrong items on the ticket, again. The music was far too loud for the venue. We were yelling to try to hear the people that were sitting across from us at our table, and we still couldn't understand them. It felt like a night club that started at 7pm and we were hoping to get a relatively normal (yet festive) restaurant experience. I thought it was a pretty bad system to wait almost an hour and a half for your table/server, then wait for a ticket so you could order your food, then wait in a line for you to get your food. We didn't even end up getting our food until around 8:45pm or 9pm. I get that Cinco de Mayo is a pretty busy holiday for most TexMex restaurants, but the service even after we got seated was pretty terrible and the food was only okay. It was by far the worst system, service, and experience I think I've ever had. The host was really nice though and apologetic about us not getting seated at the time of our reservation, so I guess that's a plus. Also, they overcharged us. Our waitress added in about 5 extra things that we didn't order. AND they charged us extra for using a credit card. This place absolutely sucks. read more

Great food, friendly hostess and fast service! The hostess Sanela and our server Chris were great. We came for national margarita day so margs were $2. Yes the fire alarms went off twice but everyone thought it was funny, the fire department showed up. It didn't disturb anything. Everyone applauded and had a good laugh. They've only been open 3 days and they're aware they have some growth! The manager came by and had great hospitality and thanked us for visiting. Great experience for the grand opening! Primo's just opened and all seats were reserved. However, the hostess proved how she could problem solve and found a table for us (a party of eight) almost immediately - very customer friendly. The server was very attentive to us and made great suggestions like the unbelievably great guacamole, extra hot salsa, and the Besos Picantes (spicy Margarita). We ordered some delicious entreés and shared them with the table. The three I recommend are the Carne Asada, a combination plate with chile relleno primos, pork belly taco, pork tostada, and the Enchiladas Champinones. The staff is very inviting; at least three managers came to the table and welcomed us. One mentioned how the training that went into grand opening and it showed. Our group of eight live in the same building about two blocks away, so we will return with a larger crowd. Great job! read more

Have been here about 10 times and the last few visits this place has gone rapidly downhill. They used to known for their $2 margarita and $2 taco night on Tuesday. About a year ago, it was great tacos were good portion, service was incredible and drinks were good. Now, about every time I go the tacos are a hit or miss. Sometimes they're yummy and large, sometimes they're small and missing ingredients. Not sure if they have new chefs often or something but it's just not great anymore. Now for taco Tuesday, they hiked up margs to $5. Kind of a steep jump when everyone went for the $2.99 margs. Beyond just the price increases the service is now horrible. Had three different waiters on my visit last night and had to ask multiple times for items they forgot, and drinks took forever. Drinks used to take only a few minutes, I mean the margs are pre made they should not take long. You can see the giant machine they come out of behind the bar. They do have a new happy hour weekdays til 7 which is nice that has $5 items, but the sangria that is on there isn't great, Paloma is small, just not the best items. On happy hour I recommend the ranch water, quesadilla and the trio platter but that's about it. The sangria has no ice and no fruit, not how a sangria should be. I used to feel bad for my dog for eating disgusting canned "dog food" and then I had food at Primo's and for the first time, i envied my dog's can of Pedigree. It is not the food here is bad. It is simply unfit for human consumption. Unless you have the palate of a pig, of course. To top it off, the staff lied to me about cooking with foods I was allergic to. The ambiance that greets you is so inviting. The place has a beautiful outdoor area so you assume it to be a nice cozy restaurant with good food. Well folks, this is why Yelp exists... my mistake of not checking before going in cost me a good amount of money. Let me start off that the entire experience was disastrous, it's as if they orchestrated a plan to make my date night the absolute worst possible. -- We got a round of margaritas and they brought out the chips and salsa. Salsa- Their salsa tastes more like pasta sauce, it's this thick paste like "salsa" that does not taste good at all. I decided to order guacamole since i was not a fan of their salsa.... Guacamole - Talk about a bland guacamole, absolutely no flavor. No lime, no salt, no pepper, no garlic, NOTHING, just crushed avocados with some cilantro. Gladly my margarita came with a slice of lime and I asked for salt to make it remotely bearable. I believe the avocados were overly ripe since it was a weird texture of creamy (almost like they used some sort of cream added) Entreés - My date and I both order fajitas. I ask for no dairy with my food. The rice - Dry The beans were actually decent. The vegetables were not like fajita vegetables, you know, sautéed and crispy...they were soggy almost like they simply steamed it. Not only that, they were definitely cooked in butter which I requested no dairy. I call the guy working there and tell him "hey they probably made a mistake, i did not want dairy with my vegetables" and he tells me "The chef said he used regular oil" This is is the part that irritates me. I worked as a cook before in a small kitchen. I know the smell and taste of food when you cook with butter, I know the smell and taste of food when you cook with oil. I asked my date in case I was just going crazy and the nose I use to sample various scotches and wine perhaps had gone very badly. She tells me "Oh no there's definitely butter in there, I can taste it" So they lied to me, and I don't know what for. I wasn't asking for a free meal, i really don't need to resort to that type of shenanigan, but lying about allergic items is not only dishonest, it's unethical.
