Boyfriend and I stopped in because I had a cold and read on Yelp that the Caldo de Res was pretty tasty...and tasty it was! It had spicy kick to it which was different to me, in a good way! Boyfriend had the Gorditas, which he said were delicious as well and we'll be back to try some other foods. First time here, had my doubts when we first walked in the door... Most authentic ethnic restaurants have that in common. Ordered fajita gorditas, they came with beans and rice as usual. Mexican restaurants are judge by those two things, if they get them right chances are the rest of the menu is going to be great. True to form, pretty good rice and beans... This is the tacqeria by my place. Sketchy part of town tbh. I've been denied entrance multiple times because there have been drunk dudes inside destroying the place. Food wise, I've only ordered tacos. I typically do the taco plate with Barbacoa, Chicharron, Carnitas. Comes with 5 tacos, rice and beans for under $10 Whenever I come past 10pm it seems to be karaoke night and the blast the volume. Ears will definitely be ringing as your enjoy your tacos. Good tacos. I really want to gush about this place but my first visit was a bit iffy. I get there pretty late on a Monday night around 11:30ish and I was told in very shy English that they close at 2am. So no problemo plenty of time. The problems started after my initial inquiry. They figured out I do not Hablo Espanol even though I look like pervy Tio Miguel. (btw I am Filipino). Because after this discovery by the servers, noone wanted to serve me. It started a contest of who can stay away from the Brown Gringo or Coconut ;) Alas I cornered one mujer and forced her to get me some vittles from the cucina and bar.. I ordered a shot of tequila and a corona, sadly no Corona Light, and both came promptly. The Patron was cheap cheap and the cervesa was ice cold! I then quickly followed up with huevos rancheros and four tacos. I ordered two barbacoa tacos and two tripa (fried chitlins) tacos. The food was glorious! Just like my Abuelita made (if I had a Mexican grandma). The tripa was chewy and crunch at the same time and still has that barnyard bunginess. The barbacoa was supermoist not oily at all and so rich tasting you feel your arteries clog as you take the second and last bite of each taco. Yes the tacos are that small yet so stuffed they were hard to handle. The huevos rancheros was ho-hum. But the key to the meal were the freshly made corn tortillas. Corner place in a run-down strip center, more a full-service restaurant than just a taqueria but that's not obvious from the outside. Located in sort of a blighted, dicey neighborhood but it's fine for lunch. Parking out front but it can be a tight lot at times, especially if a service truck parks nearby. Overall, some of the best authentic Mexican food I've come across. Complementary chips, black bean dip and salsa arrived first. The salsa was a strange brownish-orange rather than the traditional red but it was fresh and delicious with some respectable heat. Full menu, primarily in Spanish (with a few English translations) containing some Tex-Mex standards and a good selection of true Mexican favorites. Had the enchiladas potosinas, a style heard about but first time I've tried. Corn tortillas filled with cheese and folded over, pan fried in the traditional red sauce so the edges crisp up. Topped with a chorizo and potato hash, it was served with a shaved and seared slice of bistec, a bowl of charro beans, and rice and salad/garnish with a charred bulb onion. Two squeeze bottles of sauces were dropped off, one verde and one light tomato-based. Everything was fantastic if not fancy, a great platter composition, very rustic and all under $10. Only two things I should probably knock this place for but I'll give them the benefit of the doubt. Plain sliced hot dogs in the beans? Really? Took me momentarily out of the experience, a sense of just trying to repurpose some leftovers. Relatively very minor but seemed unnecessary. The second is I doubt the staff speaks any English at all, which is not entirely unexpected. As the only bolillo in the place for the entire lunch service, me and my server got by just fine with only the few menu words we exchanged. Service was glacially slow and inattentive and should cost them that fourth star, but I only saw one server working the place the whole time I was there. If you can get over feeling out of place and outside your suburban, Wonder-bread comfort zone, this is some really great food for not a lot of money. read more

As my family continues our search every Friday for the best tacos in Dallas, this week we wanted to get authentic so we chose Taqueria Cholula. Just across the street from a 1/2 price Check Cashing store in the part of town that the feint of heart call "questionable" are some of the best authentic tacos in town. Part of our trip tonight was to teach my kids about authenticity and to not be afraid to explore, especially in unfamiliar territory. We were a bit lost at first since our grasp of the Spanish language was only knowing that it was option 2 when calling our bank. Nevertheless we gestured and pointed our way through the menu with the very patient wait staff and eventually settled into some very tasty tacos. The restaurant was small and cozy and there was definitely a warm welcoming feeling from what seemed like the "regular" visitors. The carnitas and barbacoa tacos were the favorites with generous portions of meat topped with the perfect amount of onions, cilantro and hot sauce. The kids preferred the fajita tacos but my favorite by a long shot were the carnitas: long strips of savory braised pork (not chopped), chopped white onions, fresh green cilanto leaves, and perfectly spiced red and green sauces for both the mild and the wild. If you are looking for authenticity, this is the place to go. Although we weren't brave enough on this trip to try the tripa, we will definitely return to sample some of their other offerings and hopefully save room for the flan next time. read more

I live nearby and still the outside looks sketchy but inside is nice and inviting. The chips are warm and salsas are wonderfully spicy and flavorful. I ordered The Comal. Fajitas but a lot. Corn tortillas are so good. I found out they are hand made. Prices are great. I speak Spanish so I had an advantage over others who have come and speak English only. I will be back! read more

I feel AWFUL because my best friend as made several trips here and they've been closed every time. I guess I got lucky. I hope your Spanish is good because we had to order in Spanish! Can i get a "woot woot" for authentic Mexican street tacos? VENUE: Located off the street in the most sketchy looking area. Good luck finding parking because there's not much. We got lucky but I imagine if it's busy you should order out or risk parking in an alleyway. The place decor is sort of a hodge podge of stuff. There's this massive juke box in the back that plays traditional mariachi-style music - although i did here some Latino-pop playing at one point. FOOD: Awesome. Definitely comparable to Tacos La Banqueta. That should say enough. But if you've not eaten at Tacos La Banqueta yet, the meat is nicely seasoned and the tacos aren't too greasy. Standard street tacos that come up with onions and cilantro. I wish there was more extensive selection of salsa- or at least one really good spicy one - but that's okay. SERVICE: My guess is that only locals and Spanish-Speaking people are the main demographic so you will have to whip out some Spanglish to put in your order. There was one girl who spoke english that helped us a little but for the most part we were communicating with people who didn't not speak English very well so come prepared. Come for the food. Come prepared. Learn how to count in spanish so you can say, "Tres Tacos, Por Favor." Pointing at the menu is also an option. read more

I have been to a lot of Latino restaurants and this one is no different than most as far as the food goes. They have the traditional items on the menu as well as some regional specialties. However, CUSTOMER SERVICE.... or the lack of CUSTOMER SERVICE...is why they get three stars. We walked in and folks stared like we didn't belong there. They were having karaoke but we weren't welcomed or greeted so I didn't feel comfortable trying to sing there. When our server finally decided to take our order she was verbally surprised that I ordered the Guiso de Res... As if I shouldn't have known what it is. It was good by the way! But again, the service wasn't. Not only was it loud from the karaoke, but our server only came back ONCE to see if we needed anything. At the time we just started eating so we didn't know if we needed anything else. Midway through our meal I wanted more tortillas. But our server was no where to be seen. If you are in business, ALL peoples should be welcome and you shouldn't be treated as if you are encroaching on someone's territory. Folks always sqawk about feeling left out but then you forget to act accordingly! Trying not to be political but this is how this visit felt. I don't think I will return to this place. I bet it's amazing food. Sure. But every single time I've come here, it's been closed when it should be open. I think they should answer their phones or stick to their open/closing times without being arbitrary. It's not fair to customers who need to get a late night taco fix if Cholula closes 20 minutes early just so their employees can go home faster. Having worked in the service industry, it doesn't make any sense. Tonight I rolled up and could see multiple tables still inside eating, but they had already locked the doors and said they wouldn't open them. Not even for a to-go order! Have been coming here regularly for a few years. Brush up on your Spanish and come enjoy Dallas's best kept secret in traditional Mexican food. Try the parillada with corn tortillas "hecho a mano" and I love the quesadilla de rajas which is made of grilled jalapeños and potatoes. On the weekends they have great soups, "caldos." Was really promising walking up. In a strip mall with Cash Your Check here stores. The help wanted sign (for waiters and cooks) was in Spanish. Loud mariachi music on the juke box and futbol on the tele. So hopeful. So disappointed. Average food with no spice. Other than the salsa, which had some nice heat, everything else that our party of 8 ordered as was bland. Margaritas were from a mix... Even the tops shelf. Was inexpensive, which must have been the draw for the 4 star reviews. Don't usually feel let down by Yelp, but seemed tricked this time. This is an amazing place. It looks like a total dive hole in the wall that's in a hole of a shopping center. It's not. It's actually a nice restaurant with attractive decor. I'd seriously take a date there. The prices are low and the quality far exceeds those prices. I will say that the refried beans are average, at best and that the rice I got was a bit on the dry side. Pay no mind because it just doesn't matter. The tacos are fabulous and I can recommend them. They aren't as good as my favorite taqueria in Mexico City, they are good and they are authentic. You can get like five tacos, rice and beans for something like six or seven dollars. I recommend that you get some hibiscus tea, or some horchata. If you're really ambitious, get a half and half lemonade and hibiscus tea. Aguas frescas, or fresh waters, are also quite good. Melon is a favorite of mine in Mexico. I'll be going back to see what the rest of the food is like. I recommend that you do the same. I do wonder what it's like at night or late night. The area could get a little interesting. However, if you're not easily scared by a few people with brown skin, then charge on. I think it'll be well worth it. read more

Ok so we came here based on yelp reviews. My hubby got the taco plate and it was good. He tried the fajita and carnitas and fajita tacos won. Corn tortillas taste fresh and homemade. Daughter got the flauta plate and was surprised by yummy cheese with the chicken. I tried the barbacoa gorditas and they are awesome. Meat is not greasy at all. Beans need salt but otherwise good. The only bad thing is that the food was not hot at all. Salsa was hotter than the food-spicy hot and temp hot. But I will say the GUACAMOLE was AMAZEBALLS! read more

First of all, the chips & salsa were excellent. Crisp non greasy chips with salsa that has a kick. The beans were a little bland but not bad. They have a nice selection of aguas frescas (I had melon, others had horchata) Those homemade tortillas are the star. At first u think they r flour because they r so soft. Great flavor. Had eggs w potatoes off breakfast menu & a beef stew (guisado) off the dinner menu. Combined they made great tacos. read more

Thought we were going to die being the only white people in the place at 10pm on a Thursday, but the food and salsa were great. The waitress was nice, but no hablo ingles, so we just had to point to the pictures on the menu and tell her we just wanted agua. I got the 5 taco plate which was pretty dam tasty, and my gf just got a bean and cheese burrito which she said was awesome. I'm not going to bury the lead: This place makes its own corn tortillas. I haven't had fresh-made corn tortillas since I left Houston many years ago, and I'm thrilled to finally know where to find them in Dallas. As others have mentioned, Taqueria Cholula is styled more like a sit-down restaurant with table service rather than the normal "counter service"-style taquerias I'm used to. That said, there's a specific spot at the bar labeled "for to go orders," with a couple of menus. Other people have mentioned language barrier issues, but the gal who took my order spoke English perfectly, so your mileage may vary. I was there at 9:00 on a Wednesday, and the place was pretty quiet. I got the chile relleno, which comes with rice, beans, and the traditional smattering of lettuce, tomatoes, and guacamole that you usually get with these kinds of plates. The chile was a traditional taqueria chile relleno, filled with soft white cheese, covered in a thin batter, and smothered in a respectably spicy ranchero sauce. It also came with four of the aforementioned fresh-made corn tortillas which, I will reiterate, are awesome. The horchata is respectable, although I tend to like mine with a bit more cinnamon than this has. Together, the meal and a regular horchata came to just about $10. Considering most chain-style tex-mex restaurants want more than that for the chile relleno alone, I consider this a great bargain. read more

I ordered a carne asada and grande horchata. The meat was way overcooked, but everything was very tasty. The beans were especially good. Amazing food...don't be dumb and go eat here. Its in a "shady area" but if you are not a total pretentious yuppy and someone that is well traveled then Cholula's location is not even a factor.
