I spent more than 3 hours with the PWI representative. He came up with an estimate and I mentioned a competing one. He instantly produced one in that range, citing a 30 day window as the reason for the discount. It seemed to me that his spreadsheet generated the new estimate to match the information I provided from the other company. Then he offered a substantial discount if I allowed PWI to take before and after photos, put a sign on my lawn, or post a review on social media. It seemed too good to be true, so I asked three times if I incurred any legal obligations or commitments by signing; he replied "no"each time. After signing, he informed me this agreement required a significant and immediate deposit. This deposit is refundable only by initiating Virginia's three day cancellation rule, which seems onerous, and obviously, includes considerable time pressure. I ripped up the agreement. read more

Here is a review I also left on google - I reached out for a quote on a deck restoration/re-decking project based on the company's strong reviews on both the Trex website and Google. The representative was on time, personable, and clearly knowledgeable. However, after spending over two and a half hours reviewing their presentation and proposal, the quoted price came in at 70% higher than the average of four other estimates we had already received -- all from companies also vetted through Trex and with solid reputations. Even with the time-sensitive incentives (13% off for signing on the spot, plus another 7% off if they could use our project for before/after marketing), their price was still 45% higher than the others. During the presentation, the rep proudly mentioned that 93% of their customers sign immediately after the appointment. I can only assume those folks didn't get multiple quotes. To be clear, I believe Prince William Home Improvement is a solid company and would likely do a great job. I just can't justify paying 45-70% more for a project when other equally reputable companies are offering comparable quality for significantly less. read more

When reviews mention the high pressure sales tactic, that is an understatement. I suppose if you choose to do business with them, you never have to experience this. But if you allow them to give you a quote, getting them to stop calling is a problem. Not only was the visit for the quote very high pressure, but my parents and I decided not to go with them and months later my mother is still receiving phone calls. She said no repeated times and stopped answering the phone. Now the phone calls are coming in from a different number. I suggest only calling them and having them visit you if you already know you plan to work with them. Otherwise it's going to be very hard to get them off of your line. I'm extremely frustrated because this would be work for my parents home, and I'm also not sure if they're pressuring them so hard because they're seniors in Arlington Virginia. The salesperson, LiAnne Jones, was a fast talker; therefore, you can detect the lies. She told me I needed to replace all the railing for my deck, if I am changing to a Trex deck. It was a lie; she told me that the Trex I was choosing would not work with the current frame and suggested I go up to the next, which was even more costly. That too was a lie. She gave me a price oh $30,419.20. All of her quotes were outrageous. Moreover, she tried to get me to sign a contract that day. I told her no, I would need to discuss further with spouse. I got everything I need from another company at a little more than half the price. It is beautiful! This company or their sales people are crooked. We paid roughly $65K for Price William to build Trex deck in spring of 2022. Generally satisfied with the work. They were responsive when later (after approx 1 year) some of the light poles needed reinforcement . More recently, we have lost all power to the deck lighting and plug boxes the PWHI installed under the deck. When we notified PWHI, we were informed that the lighting has a "default" 1 year warranty. Nowhere is a 1 year electrical warranty mentioned in the deck warranty documentation we were provided upon completion. It was recommended to us by PWHI that we hire an electrician to investigate / inspect and determine if errors were made during the original installation, which of course would lead to us being caught in the middle between PWHI and the inspector. This is totally unsatisfactory. PWHI should stand by their work or at the very least include a clause in the warranty information addressing the 1 year electrical. This took us by suprise. read more

I first contacted Prince William in early November of '23. I was looking to add a staircase to a brand new townhome and also build a deck and staircase from the ground up and my siblings home. The curtains woman I spoke to informed me they only accept projects 100sq feet + and a staircase doesn't count towards that minimum. This was a real head scratcher to me as construction of a staircase is far more laborious (therefor more profitable) than adding square footage and I was also offering a second project which was a full build from scratch. I thanked her for the information and crossed them off the list. Apparently business must be slow because I received a random call from them last week to set up a site visit. I was totally confused and told them I had already set up an appt for the following Thursday at 11. We then realized I had an appointment scheduled with another vendor and they were cold calling me. Suddenly the 100sq ft minimum wasn't as issue and I was open to getting a second bid. The designer they sent who was 30-40 minutes late for our appointment was kind, well-informed and easy to talk to. He sketched on the spot which was helpful and did a nice job of explaining their process. He claimed they were the largest patio and deck builders in Virginia and built an average of 30 decks per week. When he first quoted my project it was wildly out of budget. Once the design was paired down the budget was lowered but still $3,500 more than the other vendor and didn't include the privacy wall I wanted. Next he followed me to my sisters house, I had already articulated the dimensions and needs of her project so we had a sketch ready to show her when we arrived. He hands you a 100+ page spiral bound book with names, address' and phone numbers of all their references... Which to me was useless. It would have been interesting if it included photos of the actual projects. Then he inputs all the line items of your project into an excel doc, mutters some numbers, tells you the discounts they're allegedly offering (13% off) and tells you your total number and payment schedule. At this point things seemed fine, nothing out of the ordinary. Next he said he would step outside so we could have some privacy to discuss things amongst ourselve. I let him know that we would not be making a decision today and we could contact him after we considered his bid. This is where things took a very aggressive turn. He became agitated and asked what there was to consider, and that the 13% discount was only available if we signed then. I explained that it was a large financial decision that we don't make without careful consideration. I also let him know I had a medical appoint that I needed to get to so things needed to be wrapped up, he quickly asked what time the appointment was and if he could come back after the appointment. I was stunned that he was being this aggressive and intimidating. It feels awful to be made to feel completely uncomfortable in your own home. I told him that we would not be making a decision today he was not welcome back and we would be happy to get in touch tomorrow. At this point he said he had to call the office - he calls, informs someone that we wouldn't be making a decision today and needed to get back to them tomorrow, then he made me get on the his phone with said person at the office who was even pushier than him and made me commit to a specific time we would speak the next day. The minute he was out the door I felt a huge sense of relief as he made us totally uncomfortable to the point of harassment. The following day I was on an important call and my doorbell rings - I wasn't expecting anyone. I walked downstairs open the door and guess who's standing in front of me. Jeff from Prince William. I was shocked. I asked him what he was doing at my home and he said "Ohh they didn't call you to let you know I was passing by?" I said no and told him it was wildly inappropriate the he came unannounced. For a company that is busy building "30 decks a week" they certainly have a lot of time to send a rep 120 minutes away from their office to make an unannounced visit to a potential client. Ironically I was on a virtual call with my therapist and had just mentioned how anxiety inducing this situation was the day before and then he shows up. I explained to him that it was completely out of line to show up announced with the intention to pressure and intimidate me. I also informed him that I suffer from severe anxiety and he was causing a ridiculous level of discomfort. I complemented him on his talents and said he seemed like a nice person who was probably being forced to behave this way by his employer but to never come to my home again and this behavior would more than likely dissuade us from choosing them (plus they're totally over-priced). I would not ever recommend this company because of their high pressure tactics. They conduct their business like desperate used car salespeople. read more

I normally get three estimates for any large projects. Two years ago I needed a patio, about 1500-2000 sq ft for the back of my home. Out of the three estimates this business was more than double the lowest, and when I engaged in conversation with them about the price difference they couldn't provide any real tangible explanation (type of concrete, depth, stairs, etc) so I couldn't justify it financially. Now, two years later they call me every two weeks and send me letters regularly. I've asked them to stop, but they continue. I block their number, and they call from a different one. Two years of this. It's horrible. Don't even call this company for an estimate because they will literally never leave you alone. If I was the owner I would be embarrassed by this harassment. I may need to file some sort of complaint with the government/FCC, or file a no contact restraining order with the court, it's sad it's gone this far. read more

As others have noted, they insisted both myself and my spouse be present. I do not have any idea why this was necessary. The salesman they brought over was incredibly friendly and appeared to be knowledgeable. After being in our home for multiple (3+) hours, they finally gave us a quote that was $15k (or about 35%) higher than any of the others received for a lower quality composite deck. As noted above, while the salesman was very friendly there is absolutely no reason to waste our time with such a lengthy sales pitch. We sent the representative on his way, and then a few days later they started calling insisting that a manager wanted to review the quote, again in person, to give us a more competitive price. I told them to give it to me over the phone or not at all but they wouldn't budge so I told them to stop calling. A few weeks later they called me again asking about the job. I told them we already found a contractor who had already started working on the project, and that we did not need any additional services and again asked that they stop calling. I have since received 2 additional calls from them over the past 3 months or so, each time insisting that they "respect my time" so they'll make it quick. Ultimately I'm disappointed. I actually went through with the process and purchased a deck from them. The deck was ~400 sq feet so it wasn't cheap (35k), but what I wanted was somebody was walk through the process so I was willing to pay for a premium. I would not do business with this company again. The sales person was very nice, and one of my key considerations to the point where it was literally noted in the signed contract was concrete footers. I was told there would be 2 feet of concrete in the ground to support the posts. Upon my inspection, I was very surprised to see that I couldn't find the concrete footers. Turns out it's buried about 3 feet in the ground and only a spot of concrete, but certainly not 2 square feet. --In their defense, this is apparently standard procedures and better construction than encasing wood in concrete without a sonotube, but I wasn't disclosed this. In fact, the sales person likely wanted me to think that there would be 2 feet of concrete to get me to sign the contract, but knew there wouldn't be. My guess is that they wanted me to do the contract. I was told by DJ in quality control and somebody else in the office they would call back to see if anything can be done. Well, it's been 2 weeks and nobody called. Once the money is in their hands they aren't interested in followups, it seems. The construction quality was actually very good however. PWHI I would highly recommend to my friends and family. They were professional they showed up every day and did a tremendous job. I am in the contracting business for interior construction, and the way these guys presented themselves and worked very hard every day was amazing. I was originally told the deck tear down and new deck install will take about seven days which I thought was a very reasonable time frame was done in five days. The quality of work is outstanding. The customer service was on point. The only thing we had to do was pick a design and get the HOA to sign off and PWHI did everything else. I originally reported this issue a couple of months ago and was told that it is normal to have cracks/splits in the wood. I called back on Friday to inform them that there were other areas of concern. I was told this is the busy time of year(dealing with new installs) That's not what a customer wants to hear when they call for service!! BEWARE.. I will keep posting updates until resolved. PWHI came out and did some "patch" work. Post were replaced but they are still refusing to take a proactive approach on things. They are telling me, "to keep an eye on things" and " If the wood continues to split, give us a call" I feel as if you see that the wood is splitting/cracking why wait to it damn near falls apart. Based on my friends experience using this company, I decided to ask for a quote. To say that I am disappointed is an understatement! I was looking forward to working with them until I received my quote after a 4 hour long sales presentation. My quote was at least $40k higher than every other quote that I received. I thought it was a miscalculation until my sales rep tried to defend their pricing. I can understand paying a premium for a luxury item but there is no way I can justify paying 165% higher on a deck. I wish I saw these Yelp reviews before reaching out. Complete waste of time, I came across this company from Trex website. I called them and they were able to come out the same evening. The receptionist said it should only be about 60-90 minute consultation, I thought it was a little long compared to other estimates, but I said ok. The sales rep arrived on time and was very sweet lady. She asked if we have ever had to deal with a consultation before and our experience with them, my wife and I said their time. The sales rep said she will make it quick. She explained the company's entire history and why we should choose them. Over 2 hours go by and she is just wrapping up. She then gives us a price that is more than double going rate. Unless you have time and don't mind giving the sales rep 2 + hours and don't mind paying almost triple the going rate, I would stay away from this company. read more

Maybe it's just because my experiences with other deck builders we tried to hire were so much worse in comparison, but I was surprised by such negative reviews here. The only thing that we found frustrating was the delay in start time for the project, but that seemed to be an issue with the county, not with the company. Even though there was a huge delay in getting the project started, they sent us regular updates to let us know what the status was. The workers were friendly and professional and there were lots of quality control checkups. If anything they might have been a little pushy with all the followups but I'd rather have that than a lack of communication. The quote was admittedly MUCH higher than we expected, especially in comparison with other builders we had contacted, but PWHI was the first/only builder that was actually aware of county code requirements, and the only one to actually draw out plans for us so that it was clear we were on the same page instead of vague "oh, yeah, we can do that" answers I'd gotten from other deck builders. I have no idea if other contractors are out there that would have offered the same thoroughness for a lower price but we had already been through two or three other businesses who didn't provide that and we were eager to get started. I totally understand the need for both spouses to be present for the planning process regardless of gender and I didn't take it as sexist. Maybe it was the way it was worded to other clients who were unhappy because I know that can sound fairly sketchy, and I've definitely had my radar go off for things like that in the past. But to me it just makes sense to have everyone on the deed present in order to avoid misunderstanding or changes of plans due to a disagreement in the home over what they want to purchase - it's a huge decision after all. Maybe they used to word it like "we need your husband to be there" instead of "our policy is to have all homeowners present at the time" or however it was put to me. They try to say they are the best in the nation and it is because they gorilla market to folks who don't do research and get competitive bids. If I could leave negative stars for PWHI I would. Trying to complete a project with this company has been a nightmare. It started off only slightly irritating with a four hour consoltation at our house but that was fine because I figured the salesrep just really knew his information and was being very thorough with going through everything, despite all the scribbles on our contract. But that consoltation happened in May. On the contract it said this project would be completed within 40-60 days. Well here I am in November without my new deck. It has been months of me calling this company and getting the same answer over and over again; they still didn't have the permit to start the project. That should not take months. This company was so out of touch on what was happening with my deck project. I talked to many different people, coordinators, general managers, and so on. None of them could give me a reasonable answer to why my project hadn't started yet. I finally got an answer from Phil that my project would begin and supplies would be dropped off on Friday or Monday. Friday passes without any supplies. Same with Monday. I call Phil back and tell him that. He says he'll get to the bottom of it and call me back in five minutes. He never calls me back. The next morning I get a phone call from someone else telling me that they can't get my permit because another company has a permit to work in my backyard already. That was a company for a different project, a walkout from my basement, that was already completed last month. I told her not to bother explaining that because I wanted my deposit back. I will never ever utilize this piece of S**T company. They left holes in the grass did not install the patio properly had to call them back several times to fix. Left rocks all over the grass, did not clean up after themselves. PWHI said they was going to put the pipe 10 inches in the ground but yet the pipes was exposed to the ground. The patio pavers are moving around which they was supposed to not be moving so they applied soil next to it so they would stop until the next rain happens. My review is limited to the estimate process. This company refused to come to my home to give me an estimate unless my husband was home. Hilarious because I make more money than my husband and I coordinate all the home repairs for my company, including doing home repairs myself. I want to know what they would say if my husband asked for an estimate. Would they require that I was home? I suspect not. What if I were separated from my spouse? Here is a tip for PWHI: If someone calls you and is interested in paying you for work, it's not smart to marginalize the decision-maker and the check writer in the process because they will find someone else with whom to work (which I will). read more

We had a very disappointing experience with this company which we selected as it was rated highly in our Loudoun County best picks. Sales person came out and did a lengthy presentation about their company re, philosophy, owner, insurance, quality etc. Very little time was spent on actually talking about decks. Sales person promised a follow up meeting a few days later and cancelled that day. Rescheduled for a few days later, again cancelled (by text, 1/2 hour before the meeting). Said he was sick but promised to send over estimate later that day. Nothing came. Not that day or the next day. Both my husband and myself called the company and were told the general manager was "unavailable" but would call back. I also left a vote mail. Neither one of us got a call back. This company does a horrible job. Why do you ask I just bought a house were the owner got this company to put a deck on. During inspection the inspector said this was a DIY deck because the boards we're done wrong and the boards were holding water and the base is falling apart and the cuts on the wood were done wrong and the nails are coming up. Due to shotty work. After talking to the owner I found out the deck was put on 2017 by prince William home improvements. Our inspector gave him his card and said for $11,000 he could've built a better deck with a gazebo for that amount. We have to redo the deck because it is unsafe to be on. Again from the look of their work and not dealing with the company myself I would not recommend unless you want to replace the deck after a year and piss money away for crappy work. Just updating the company does not back their work called and I was told it's not there problem and I should stop complaining and be happy. It was our first new home; and the first time we ever had a deck built; so, I think I am most satisfied with the patience of the designer. We had a lot of off the wall questions, that were important to us. The designer was very professional, and he made some really thought worthy suggestions; like the recommendation he made that makes the deck flooring look like an extension of our sun room. It looks really good! The team, that built the deck worked fast and diligently. They were also very professional. The work, on the other hand, was performed by another group of individuals of Hispanic descent. Idk who made the decision, but they installed a drain pipe, that was not included in the design I approved which is an ugly, awful white color that doesn't even match the scheme of our deck or patio. I complained and refused to sign the contract but they hounded me and I was over it. Now, our back yard floods and the water stands whenever it rains because of the way they did the patio. The deck turned out pretty good though. I wouldn't use them again, nor would I refer them to someone else. They did a terrific job with our deck from start to finish. Gave them a 1 star due to very poor customer service. Untrustworthy on timeframes. Don't return calls or emails in a timely matter. Railing became loose, guy came out and checked it, stated that company would give us a call to arrange for them to fix the problem. Didn't hear from them so WE had to shoot out an email to them. They replied back giving us a date. THEN we get an EMAIL stating that workers are delayed on another project and wouldn't be able to come out on the promised day. RESCHEDULED for Monday/Tuesday. Monday AND Tuesday passed and workers still a no show and we haven't received a phone call nor email regarding this. WE regret having this company do our deck and patio.
