Tried this place upon a recommendation from my cousin. Pleasantly surprised! Great service and good food for NW Indiana. I work downtown and travel quite a bit, so I tend to be picky and am a tough critic. I enjoyed a nice dinner - sea bass and risotto. The fish was well seasoned and not over cooked. The risotto was so-so, but the French martini made up for it. Enjoyed the complimentary mini-meatballs and crudités served before our meal. My husband enjoyed the blackened salmon too. 7:00 reservations, seated at 7:40. Server paused for a while before being able to tell us the specials. Ordered a second drink, server came back 30 mins later to ask what I ordered again, got it 15 mins after that. I ordered the roast duck, being it's supposed to be a fine dining place I expected a beautifully plated and seasoned sliced roast duck... it was a big half duck with a cup of sauce on the side and over cooked. Also, she stated if we wanted our soup baked it would be an up charge. Okay... we ordered French onion as our meal comes with soup or salad. Said not baked, and we were still charged $5, she said it was for the French onion. Why...? Why does there need to be an up charge for something put in the oven, and maybe the server should have clarified the French onion is always baked? Idk. Wasn't that impressed. Took one bite of my duck and took it carry out to feed my dog when I get home. Hopefully she'll like it. I roast a duck for Christmas, so trust me I'm not new to it. Overpriced and mediocre at best. Took over an hour to get our food... I've been to many places classified as fine dining with lower prices that are much more memorable, bringing me back for more. So my wife and I took our friends out for dinner tonight at the Princess Cafe and had an incredible dining experience. We were lucky enough to have Debbie as our server. Debbie has worked at the Princess for 42 years... How awesome is that? Debbie should be in the server Hall of Fame. She is the best of the best. The atmosphere is so cozy and relaxing and is perfect for a romantic date or wedding anniversary. Not a single one of us had anything to complain about service or food wise. Everything was cooked perfectly and was absolutely delicious. If price is a concern there are Burgers and Pasta dishes that are between $10-15 and I'm sure they are very good. We did appetizers, many cocktails and all ordered some of the more pricey items and paid over $300 for what was worth every penny. We will be back soon to try more of the menu items. There's a reason that the Princess Cafe has been around for decades and incredible service and a great dining experience is it. I highly recommend this restaurant, even if you have to drive an hour to get there. Making a reservation is recommended. read more

I am reposting this review as I have just learned that Yelp allows restaurants to remove negative reviews and my previous review mysteriously vanished... I have been going to the Princess for almost 10 years. I used to love going there even though it costs a lot of money. I have no problem spending a lot on a great dinner. For probably the last 2 years or so they have really been dropping the ball. The service has been bad and their food is not as good. They used to be very consistent and they are quite the opposite now. It seems like the prices have gone up while the quality has gone down. In my past few visits they did not cook the meat properly and when you are paying over $30 for a steak it should be cooked right. Also, I have had the same waiter a few times and he could not be more condescending or rude! On average my bill for 2 people is at least $120 (before tip) so I expect great service and great food! On my most recent visit with a girlfriend I ordered oysters on the half shell. They were huge, gross and were shucked improperly. I called ahead to inquire about a corkage fee and was told it would be $10. When I got my bill they charged me $25!!!!! I about fell out of my seat! I told the waitress that I called ahead and 2 minutes later the owner came over to address the issue. He loudly and rudely told me that it was $25 and made it seem that I was trying to rip him off by bringing my own wine and that he wouldn't make any money if everyone brought their own wine. I was embarrassed so I paid and left. But it continued to bother me so I called him hoping he would resolve my unhappiness as a long and loyal customer who has spent thousands of dollars there over the years. He immediately started YELLING at me and CURSING me out. Once again he made it out that I was trying to rip him off and that I lied when I said I called ahead. I explained to him that a corkage fee is a 100% profit and that if his wine list was better I wouldn't have wanted to bring my own wine. I also said that most restaurants in Chicago with sommeliers don't even charge that much for a corkage fee (for example Ruth's Chris steakhouse charges $15). Shockingly, he didn't even know what a sommelier was! I also tried to explain my other issues with his restaurant and he said, "Honey, I've been in business for over 30 years. I have plenty of customers and if you don't like my *#%^& corkage fee that don't eat at my restaurant!" Okay, I will gladly NEVER return! What he doesn't realize is that no matter how long you've been in business, even in a small town where consumers have very few other restaurant options, if your service/food is bad you will eventually lose business. I will eat at an OK restaurant if the service is fantastic. Service to me is the most important thing when I go out. I have NEVER in my life been treated so badly by a business owner and I wanted to warn everyone to not waste their time with this place. read more

Great place in the least likely of locations. Beecher is not a place I have visited very often, but in the search for a solid meal, I stumbled upon this place. Started with some meaty oysters and saganaki--both of which were very good even though oysters of that size are not typically my thing. We then ordered lamb chops and a fisherman's platter with lobster, crab legs, and shrimp. The meals were excellent and the garlic mashed side as well as the steak fries were very good. Have been a customer for the past few years; this time had to be the worst. Ordered two fillets and one beef stroganoff - the meat on all three items were rare. Sent back all three to the kitchen - one fillet and the stroganoff still not cooked properly the second time. The waitress was nice, but had poor timing - there was a very long time in between the different courses. The waitress also had to come back to the table a couple of times because she did not write down what we told her to order. For better food and service, go to Wildfire in Oak Brook. Will not return to the Princess Cafe; the food preparation and service is not what it use to be. read more

The Princess Cafe is a gem of a restaurant that is WAY off the beaten path in Beecher IL. You wouldn't know it's a finer dining establishment from the outside, but the food inside is always excellent. As for decor, some of it is starting to look a tad dated, so it's not one of those "chi-chi" places in the city by any means. Many of the patrons are wearing jeans and not terribly dressed up, but you wouldn't necessarily feel out of place with a suit and tie / dress, either. I've had the frog legs, duck and filet mignon, and all have been excellent. I have worked in Beecher for 5 years and have never gone until last night and will be going back again! This was a breath of fresh air for me last night. I have been getting increasingly bored with my dining options in the Manteno area - so remembering having seen billboards for the Princess Cafe on my to work sites the last six months - we decided to give 'er a try. Glad that we did! We were greeted by a friendly hostess - opted to sit in the bar, in a booth, and in front of a tv playing the Packer/Chargers game - Perfect. Ordered waters to start and we were brought a complimentary relish tray, cocktail meatballs, and bread without even asking for anything. That was a nice thing to do. I ordered the surf and turf - 8oz lobster tail and 8oz filet mignon (medium rare) with salad and mashed potatoes, my partner got the rack of lamb with salad and mashed potatoes. Great salads with homemade salad dressings. The dressings did not come on the side, which I would usually be pissed about, but they know how to dress a salad at this place. Just the right amount. The lobster was yummy - cooked perfectly and the filet was perfection also. I can't remember the last time my steak has been cooked properly at a restaurant. Needless to say, I was happy. The lamb was pretty damn tasty as well. I don't eat lamb too often so don't have much to base the lamb on - I was told that it was cooked properly and some of the best that he has had. The waiter was fantastic - kind, attentive, and helpful. I wish I would have caught his name. The ambience in the Princess is old school. Dimly lit, romantic, quiet with nice classical instrumentals playing softly in the background. It's not awkward quiet either - but the right amount of quiet. Quiet enough to eat in peace and relax without hearing everyone's conversations around you. The furniture is definitely vintage but not raggy at all. It's a very nice looking place. I will be coming here again (have to bring my roommate when he comes home from vacation). Looking forward to trying one of their chicken dishes, soup, and some flaming saganaki cheese! Been coming here for 15 years. "Sometimes" the food can be a little off but that's with any place. I'd say 3 times in the past 15 years....we were disappointed. The Dover Sole and Pork Chops are outstanding! ALWAYS! We remain loyal. This place holds a lot of special memories for us. Martinis are not great. Stick to wine or your basic vodka tonic and drinks of that nature. Sounds weird but the coffee is like no other. Delicious. read more

A family "go-to" for the past 10 years. Have some of the friendliest owners/family oriented staff you can imagine. Ask for Evan. Just do it. The place has a very old appearance. No problems here, as long as the food is worth it. IT IS. Of the 15+ meals I've had, not one has been bad. The greek flair is always present in the entrees. Huge relish tray with an assortment of fresh veggies. Next come the meatballs and bread which are always outstanding. For an appetizer it's almost a must for us to get a saganaki and shrimp dejonghe. Every entree here has been great. Not the best ribeye I've had. (That and the lack of craft beers are only reasons holding back a 5-star). I'm not a filet guy, but my god are they great. Everything I've tried is great: Frog legs, chops, shrimp, steak. Just try it all. Unless you close this place down you'll have a family coming back once every few months. I took my daughter and son-in-law for dinner. After two and a half hours we still did not have our entrees. We decided to leave and they rushed our meals to the table. My daughters meal was not correct. We decided to take our meals home. When I attempted to eat mine the steak Diane which I ordered med. rare was well done and no flavor at all. Food and service is amazing. Its in a small town and it is better than many restaurants in Chicago that I have been to.

Although the place is called Princess Cafe its decor is very much like the living room of the dude from the Dos Equis commercial. The food is yumms. It certainly is a place to unwind. The temperature is just right, the lighting is flattering, plenty of parking, and in a great neighborhood. What more could you ask for? My father-in-law found a real gem in this place. read more

Good overall just a few things I'd change. The bread is always dry and cold. Usually if we're going to a steakhouse we expect a warm fresh bread. It starts the dinner off. The meatballs that are complimentary taste canned. They are not good. Their ranch is delicious and homemade. French onion soup was good but salty. The cream of chicken rice soup tasted like it was just salty broth. Definitely needed a lot more rice and chicken. The New York strip is always phenomenal and cooked perfectly. If you order mushrooms to top your steak they give you a massive amount! So you get $5 worth but I wouldn't recommend it because you're never going to finish all those mushrooms, even though they were delicious. Mozzarella sticks were great but I wasn't a fan of the sauce that came with them. Too sweet. The lemon cake dessert is good but for the size and price it's not worth it. It was also a little dry last time we ordered it. Fresh fruit would up the taste instead of just a raspberry sauce. The cheesecake is really good and has a nice crust. My friend and I have been to Princess quite a few times over the years. Sadly, we've noticed both the food and the staff have become less 'attentive' and the food has become noticeably downhill. We were there last night for dinner...hoping that both the service and the food had gone back to what we were accustomed. Sadly, we were wrong. One of the glaring differences will be the reason we will not go back: a simple Beefeaters martini, straight up with olives. On the bill: martini $7.00, olives $1.00, straight up $2.00. A $10 martini is not the issue - the issue is that they charge for olives and they charge for having it shaken/stirred. Really? An extra $3? What next? You'd never know it from the outside, but this may be the best upscale restaurant within 30 miles. Entrees are $20+, but well worth it. You get a huge relish tray with meatballs, bread, soup, and salad. But the main courses are really what it's all about. One of the best (and biggest) pieces of salmon I've ever had, with asparagus and a Dill Champagne sauce that was incredibly rich and delish. read more

I remember going to the 'old' Princess 40 years ago. What a change! I happened to get a fairly new waiter. (Shane) He had recently been moved (up) from a busboy. It took him about 10 minutes to get me a drink from the bar. Once my drink was delivered, I sat waiting for a bread basket. I eventually had to ask him for it. He then promised a bowl of complimentary small appetizer sausages. (Which took forever) He seemed to be doing a lot of running around, table to table, without delivering anything? I guess he may have been apologizing to them, as he had apologized to me a half-dozen times. When he finally took my order, I asked him if I could get the Steak Diane, medium rare. He said he didn't know and would have to ask. (Now remember this is a steak house restaurant!) (Can the management spell T-R-A-I-N-I-N-G?) The bus girls, clearing my table, would have made better servers! The salad was brought warm and not at all crispy. I was happy that I got to finish it before my main course was delivered. My medium rare steak was South of medium rare and the service was a lot South of what one would expect from a pricy (40 dollar +) steak house ... I doubt I will be back. The service and the quality of the meal just wasn't what I expected. The couple at the table next to me was, also, was dissatisfied.
