There's some weird business practice going on here that I don't quite understand. Last year we had Avi from Pristine replace our motor for our gate. He was professional and fine, my only qualm was that a few months later I called him about a keypad for the gate but he never showed up for the appointment. Cut to this week, our gate all of a sudden stopped working and I called to see if someone could come take a look. I never got to speak to Avi this time, but got his "business partner". When his business partner showed up, I noticed he was driving a truck that said 'Mirage Garage Door & Gates' on it. Long story short, he helped me figure out what was happening with the gate, which was great - and I asked him about a keypad since he was here. He had one in the truck, programmed it for me, and installed it. He said in total it was $355 for the 30 minutes he spent here. I thought it was steep, but because I had a good experience with Avi, I trusted this guy from Mirage to also be honest. I asked him how much the keypad was and he said $255. Turns out I should not have trusted him, because the keypad is going for $49 online, and $255 is still VERY steep even if it includes labor and a 100% profit on parts. I decided to look up Mirage Garage Doors on Yelp and it all made sense when I saw that his page is filled with negative reviews about his steep prices and insane upcharges. Our almost 20 year old swing gate motor was dying. It was a big inconvenience and we needed a new one quickly. Our previous experience with the original installer of the gate had been....meh and very expensive. We did some quick online research and decided to call Pristine. Avi was very responsive and came out to assess way quicker that we had anticipated, so that was already a plus. We had a new system installed (the old one was just not worth repairing, had been discontinued, etc) within a day or two. The only hiccup was some electrical needed updating, which they took care of and was an added expense, but it was the right move and we sort of had that in the back of our minds as something that could possibly need doing in future anyway. He also had his team do a quick welding repair that my husband prepped for them. All-in-all, new gate systems aren't cheap, and we knew that going in, but Avi and his team were responsive, efficient, friendly, and accommodating, so if you have to spend that kind of money at the least you want this kind of service and quality. The technician came to my home and first checked the springs, which are the easier and less costly components to change. He promptly tested them, and saw that at least two of them needed to be replaced. However, after testing the springs, which were working just fine now, he noticed the garage door motor was not working anymore. This seemed reasonable since the garage door system was now over 20 years old. The technician explained in detail what needed to be done and how pricing would be for each aspect of the job. Their prices for the springs were less than the two other companies I contacted. After a long @ss day at work, I was ready for a nice glass of Chardonnay with my chicken stir fry ... but no ... that was not to be my evening. Instead, the garage door decided to jump off its tracks and almost took off my head. In a panic, we called multiple "24-hour service" door repair companies without reaching a single soul ... until Avi picked up the phone at Pristine. Given it was after 6PM, he had to check with his team to see who was available.
