    Piñatas for $9.99 and up.

Overheard during my visit: "Dude, this place is awesome." ~White hipster to his buddy, as they were leaving "I love this place; I'm so glad I live by here." ~African-Am man with big grin on his face --------- People are *so* happy that there's affordable produce in West Oakland that people have huge grins on their face while shopping. Seriously. It's just a happy place. The middle-aged guy who hangs out and talks to the customers is a happy guy (I assume he is the owner). The customers are happy. The workers are happy. That said, this place is just like one of the Mexican markets in the Mission (cheap produce, half mexican food, half american food). In the Mission this place would be no big deal, but this is West Oakland, peeps, where establishments that don't involve obscene amounts of liquor are hard to come by. Mandela Food Co-op by the bart station is a great little spot, but, honestly, it's not very affordable for most of West Oakland's residents, many of whose need for to save money for rent and utilities probably outweighs their desire to support food justice movements. ------- Other perks: ~ Accepts EBT (food stamps) ~ A parking lot. ~ Yams 4 pounds for $1.00. ~ Grapefruits 4 pounds for $1.00. ~ Piñatas for $9.99 and up. ~ A gazillion flavors of jello that you've never heard of, including Pistachio and Egg Nog. I haven't made jello in 20 years, but with flavors like that, I was tempted. ~ More brands of Maria cookies than you ever thought existed. ~ A diverse clientele: Black, Latino, Hippies, Hipsters, Punks, Street people, Young, Old, you name it - they shop here. Drawbacks: ~ Pretty much no "natural foods" (i.e. soy products, rice milk, etc.) ~ The only meat available were commercial lunchmeats and canned meats. That said, I think that's fine, because they should stick to what they do best - produce and Mexican products. *Note: I only say "Mexican" as shorthand - it's possible that they sell a range of Latino foods. **Wheelchair accessibility: While it's possible a narrow wheelchair could get through the aisles, it's probably a tight and uncomfortable squeeze at some corners.

I am glad this produce and grocery market has its own parking lot because of the street and homeless that unfortunately hang around. The prices were much better than the Pak n' Save up the street. I noted the inexpensive avocados, celery, apples and oranges. I love the plentiful jalapenos and habanero peppers. I'll be back.

I went in one night to buy a couple things. I even asked the cashier to help me find the items in the store that I was going to buy because I couldn't find them. when we're at the check out counter, he asks me if he can look inside my bag to make I sure I didn't steal anything. I ask him if he is serious. he says yes. I kindly tell him that yes he can check my bag, but that once he does he will lose a customer because I don't support businesses that racially profile customers. he says he's not racist and then proceeds to tell me stories about people stealing. I assure him I'm not a thief and that I don't care about his reasoning. if he has an issue with customers coming into the store with bags (I had 1) he should ask everyone (not only Black customers) to leave their bag at the counter while shopping. I would have left my bag at the counter without a problem if he had asked. but, again, I let him know he has my permission to look inside my bag. but that once he did, he would lose a customer. he did check my bag and got a look at my takeout box from the Korean fried chicken spot. What I was gonna buy at Nature's grocery story that evening I left on the counter and I haven't been back since. during my interaction with the cashier, a white woman walked in and shopped.q I imagine that she had no problems not if every customer is not asked to show their bags or leave their bag at the counter, it's a shame because its a block or so away from my apartment and I love the idea of supporting a mom and pop's business, but I don't support racial profiling. it happened to me, so I know other Black people have gone through it at Nature's and it's unacceptable.

I like their liquor and wine section, and can't imagine very many situations where they couldn't cover my needs. The prepared food is not worth the trip for that alone, and is really pretty uninspiring. They stock everything I need. They have great, consistent people working check out. Looking for cheese? There is a hidden nook across from the meat case that offers an amazing, well curated selection of cheeses. Prices in some areas are a little bit higher than somewhere like WF, but they are not a massive corporation, so it is understandable. The staff works like a friendly cohesive team offering great customer service. The market was full of customers, but they did a fantastic job at not allowing lines to form. The place had a farmers market/Sprouts kind of feel and carried predominantly organic produce. They have almost every type of product but maybe only 1-2 brands for each. I liked that there were many plant-based options, from cream cheese to frozen meals or sweets, but I was disappointed that they specifically didn't have nondairy yogurt which is one of my go-to's for breakfast. Almost everything is organic, and the price reflects that; a regular 15oz can of tomato sauce was $4. Besides that, it seems like a safe and convenient place to shop with their wide selections. The staff member helping at check-out was also very friendly.

But there's a reason for my continued patronage at this store: it slashes my grocery budget by at least 50 percent, if not more. It makes a big difference during these inflationary times. I used to stick with packaged goods, but in more recent years I've also been getting as much produce as possible at this GO. It's quite a bit less than at the other grocery store I often frequent, a family-run business in the Dimond district. It's not hard to find quality produce here, and they have a respectable amount of organics. The one thing that keeps me from giving this store a full five stars is the fact that they allow signature gatherers to set up shop by the front door, and these people thrust their their damn clipboards and pens in your face when you try to walk in. Today, when I politely declined to fork over my signature, the woman told me, "You should try to give a hoot about this," which was quite annoying. I'm not going to put my signature on something I haven't researched beforehand. These things are not always what they seem to be. In any case, I go to Grocery Outlet to do my shopping, not to debate ballot initiatives with people I do not know, and certainly not to be shamed by them when I don't give them what they want. I really, really wish the GO would not allow these signature gatherers to harass their customers, who are not there to engage in political discussions. In fact, I wish they wouldn't allow these people on the property AT ALL.
