Came here after the Usual down the street. This place is a very intimate, hip establishment. Its like the next-door neighborhood bar so to speak. We were greeted by the friendly owners on a cold Saturday night. There were about two other groups of people in the place around 12 pm. It was very cold so I didn't get a chance to check out the patio and this probably why there were not that many people out and about. Its another hidden gem of a place to enjoy and relax with a nice drink and good conversation. Will be going to Spice next door and hop over to Proper for a good night out soon. read more

Really enjoy stopping in to Proper. Always a huge selection of spirits and true artists behind the bar. They also have an eclectic selection of draft craft if you're in the mood for a frosty beer. Damn, I'm getting thirsty just thinking about it. I'm headed out for a Proper drink. read more

Can't believe I didn't write a review on this place. Ok let's begin. Checked this place out when it first opened so of course I knew it wouldn't be perfect. To my surprise everything went well. It's very tiny so if you blink you will miss this place. So pay close attention while driving down Magnolia. The mixologist was awesome. He made my friend and I the perfect drink. We decided to sit outside since it was too cramped up inside. Nice cute patio to sip and talk. It would've been nice to have some small appetizers available. No worries you're right in the middle of two awesome restaurants. I plan on going back this week to see if any changes occurred since the last time I visited. read more

I was searching for bars and saw this little gem on Yelp. I liked the fact that its a small bar and doesn't serve food so the crowd is different from a normal bar crowd. The drinks are a little pricey but I knew that going in. The bartenders are very personable and will customize drinks to whatever you fancy. I actually saw a few regulars doing this but they were more than keen to offer the same service to everyone if requested. At one point the bar was really slammed and I would have ordered another drink but waited about 20 minutes until I could get service so I just tabbed out. This would normally annoy me but it comes with the territory when the crowd picks, plus I was already sitting at the bar and not standing. I will visit again in the future and try some of the infusions they create. read more

Where did my friendly bar go? After an extended period out of town, I returned to find not only my favorite bartender of all times gone but did't recognize any faces behind the stick. What was a welcoming and affable establishment, management seems to have lost its focus. Though not busy, no customary greeting from the behind the bar. What few patrons were there seemed sullen and lifeless. I was asked - "What can I get ya?" without offering a look at the menu, then having a lurking bartender stand and stare as I perused the menu. Evidently I fell into a time warp with a Tiki theme after the peak of the summer season, hardly tropical. After concocting my drink, which was passable enough, the bartenders stood around and discussed their post-shift plans. No engaging the customers, no inquiry as to how my cocktail tasted or if there was more they might do for me. My hopes are these fine folks find their footing and return to the pre-prohibition atmosphere, take down the claustrophic red curtains that close in an already intimate space and find people that enjoy interacting with customers. I don't normally hang out at these sorts of places, but I'm down with this place for one reason: the bartender Chaz is pretty incredible. Knowledgeable, attentive, creative. Tom Collins is my favorite drink and he makes one of the best I have ever had. When I say I don't normally hang out at places like this, I mean that it is pretty bougie. It is called "Proper" after all. Not incredibly expensive, but drinks are on the higher side. Still, it's not bougie or hipster enough to the point where it's uncomfortable. It has a nice, relaxed vibe and a decent sized patio. Recommended for Chaz alone. read more

We had the misfortune of dropping by for the 1st time on Trivia night, which was a loud affair. It's neat when a bar lets you bring in outside food in theory, but the disparate smells of the various kinds of food brought in was not a win for us. We shall return, as this place gets great reviews but our first experience wasn't thrilling. read more

A quaint shanty with unique cocktails, Prosper is a mature offering to Magnolia's emerging entertainment district. Proper has a lot of charm and ambiance, packed into a relatively small venue. They offer some great original cocktails featuring fruit-infused liquors, and a selection of local brews on tap, as well as a wine. But what makes Prosper stand out is their homemade, fruit infused liquors. I ordered a whiskey-based drink featuring fresh blueberries and blackberries, which were really a nice touch. My wife ordered a Maui Mule, a variation of a Moscow Mule featuring pineapple infused vodka. We were both very pleased with our selections. There is a well stocked bar, but you should definitely check out the specialty menu. Prices are about average for the area. There is a modest outdoor patio in the back, with tables and ambient lighting. I appreciated how the patio is isolated away from the street. Music playing over the speakers was not too loud, allowing us to carry on conversations without screaming. Nothing is overbearing about Prosper, which made it an ideal lounge to kick back and enjoy some flavorful drinks, and good friends. I would recommend Prosper to visitors, and will be checking in often. read more

Went to this place last night to celebrate my new job with friends. I was looking for a small, laid back place with good drinks. This place hit the nail on the head. I had three different drinks: Poncho & Lefty, an Old Fashioned, and a drink with one of their infused vodkas. All three were great! I loved that the place was small and not super crowded. So I work three doors down from Proper and usually will come in for a after work drink from time to time. They have a dill pickle vodka that they make in house that I LOVE. So I usually pick that place to go. I've been many times to this place in the past, but this past time I came in I wasn't even acknowledged or even greeted. I came in and sat at the bar, had a bartender right in front of me mixing drinks and I didn't even get a "hey I'll be right with you". I understand being busy, I myself work in the service industry and I am very understanding of someone being busy. But the fact that I wasn't even acknowledged or greeted put a bad taste in my mouth. Even the owner (I know because I own a business a few doors down from his bar) was standing right by the bartender that was directly in front of me and he didn't even say hello or just say a simple "be right with you!". I waited for 10 minutes and got up and left. No one spoke a word to me. Really disappointing considering I usually choose this place over the bar that's right next to them. One of my favorite places on magnolia. The drinks are always so good and they will make whatever you want. The decor is awesome.. Every time I go, there is a piece of art on the wall I wish I could take home. The owners are super friendly. I'm going to channel Jon Taffer of bar rescue and hopefully not come off too mean. I want to like this place, it's a great location and decent concept. However, after about 5 visits, I just don't get it-- The word that comes to mind every time is AWKWARD. The staff never seems happy, or even cordial as customers walk in. My last visit, a mother and daughter combo eyed us wearily. No smile and greeting, no friendly banter. My wife and I eye balled the menu for a few minutes, still nothing from the staff-- just stood there staring at us. I asked if she had a gin cocktail recommendation, and I swear to god, she said, "ummm... not really." WTF?? Damn, not everyone is cracked up to be a bartender-- so DON"T PUT THEM BEHIND THE BAR! This place has so much potential to be a cute little craft bar on the most happening street in the Fort. But every time this staff kills it; this is one example, but every time I've been in here I feel like a burden or annoyance. There are really talented service industry types crawling all up and down Magnolia and yet we have "no social skills" and "I don't really know much about making a cocktail" happening behind the bar, giving a "put out" vibe every time. I visited for the first time on Thursday, 2/27 around 8. I had met the owners previously and was looking forward to going. I'm so glad I did! Finally, a nice, classy, but not fancy, quiet bar, non-smoking where the staff speaks to you like a friend, not just a customer. They've got a really nice selection of craft and local beers. The lighting is very soft, but not too dark. I live in Ryan Place and FINALLY we have a local bar that's not full of 20-somethings yelling and smoking. Definitely will visit again!! read more

LOVE LOVE LOVE this bar!!! The owners are extremely nice and very friendly. On my first visit I accidentally left my ID and she went to the trouble to look me up on FB and let me know she had my ID. That was my first impression of the place and a very good one to make. I have been back many many times and take new friends with me when I can. I am a pretty boring beer drinker but want to try new things when I am there. All of the staff have been very helpful with making suggestions and recommendations. I get so sick of the smoky bar scene and this is the exact opposite! The interior is very cool and a nice space to relax in. The patio is fantastic and as soon as the weather is just a little cooler I plan to spend a lot of time there. Give it a try! read more

Very nice little cocktail place on Magnolia - I actually much prefer it over The Usual. Bartender Chris was very knowledgeable, prices were quite reasonable (most $10 or under), pretty little patio out back with some trees around so you can't really see the parking lot behind it. You have to wait a bit for your drinks, but that's because they handcraft everything, and it's worth it. Decor and music inside give it a good atmosphere. Will definitely be going back! read more
