Came here to meet up with a few friends and was pleasantly surprised. I've been to a few other German style beer halls in other cities and I feel like those have been either too noisy or too dark. Prost is a large open space with a lot of benches/tables so your group can be as packed or as spread out as you choose. They (obviously) have a large selection of different European beers and they're broken up by style on their menu which helps with deciding what you want. I tried two different Ayinger beers ($8 for .5L) and enjoyed them both a lot. We also got their housemade pretzel w/ beer cheese and mustards and word to the wise, definitely order a whole one. We initially ordered a half because we saw another table's pretzel and thought there was no way we could finish a whole one, but we ended up ordering the other half to our original pretzel because it was that good. Definitely the softest/butteriest pretzel I've had and the beer cheese and mustards complement its slight saltiness nicely. Definitely a fun place to go with a group of people to get some yummy bar food and large jugs of beer. read more

This place was delicious. My boyfriend and I were just in Chicago for the day and just stumbled in. The atmosphere is upbeat and the staff was very friendly. We ordered half of a pretzel and a board with two kinds of sausage. It was delicious and well priced. We will definitely be back when we are in this area of the city!! read more

Not your typical German bar! Stopped in after a show at the Apollo theater for a beer/nitecap. At about 10:30 on a Thursday it was pretty quiet but as the night wore on, there were more folks adding to the ambience. We thought we'd just grab a beer but their menu was very interesting. Our server, a nicely tatooed young man was more than willing to explain items on the menu and really knew his stuff. He directed us to some of their German beers based on our domestic tastes and also helped us pick out a few things for snacking. We had the aufschnitt und kase (4 meats and 4 cheeses) and I had a Hacker Pschorr Dunkelweiss and Leigh had a Smuttynose Winter. Both GREAT beer selections. The food selection was AWESOME. Even though you might think, meat and cheese platter, everything was delish. Coppa, Capicola (one with pork one with beef), pork belly, several cheeses...really nice selection along with the beers. Even though we looked (and in fact were) out of towners, they treated us like locals and regulars....try it, great little find. read more

I really enjoyed this place a lot because their beer was awesome. Plus you can get a nice big liter of beer instead of those annoying little prissy by alcohol per volume glasses. Amen. We also got the gigantic pretzel and all the dips as well. Yum just yum. Great place for a chat. Also I enjoyed the ambiance since they weren't blasting music out every speaker, I could gossip and catch up with friends, and the place was well lit promoting a nice and happy atmosphere. Prost! Re-opened and amazing. So many fine German beers, such friendly management--Bavaria meets the American Midwest--and a fine menu focused not on length but on delicious QUALITY. Wurst appetizers, some at just $6, are sehr gut...and such generous portions. Entrees and beers aren't cheap, but they're also not expensive (two dozen beers, vom fass), given the attention to detail and quality. European football from GolTv, FoxSoccer and ESPN, too! Welcome back to the 'hood. Will definitely be back for football in the day and dinner at night with the wife and family. The Austrian pils on the beer list (Grieskirchner) is light and refreshing, with a floral bitterness on the back end that lends character. Great with fish or a light appetizer. Prost is also ideal for large groups...wonderful open space for mingling and community that just cries for a party. Reminds me a lot of the Augustiner beer hall in Munchen, not far from Marienplatz. Highly recommend for delicious German food and beer in a fun, friendly atmosphere. read more

Had an amazing experience at Prost last weekend! They have an amazing selection of food and you must try the giant pretzels with cheese dip. Their beer selection is also killer. Our bartender was an extremely jacked dude (believe is name is piers) he had an amazing knowledge in regards to the food and new exactly what beer I wanted to have with my meal. He also seemed to know how to pronounce the beer names properly (thank god cause I didn't.) Will definitely come back in to see our bartender and the rest of the staff. read more

Food was pretty good, Beer selection and pricing excellent, service very good, atmosphere = dark German beer hall: great. Acoustics terrible. The hard surfaces echo noise so everyone is yelling over the noise so they turn up the Eurotrash top 40 to compensate. Went here last night with a Groupon and I can't wait to go back! The food was amazing!!! Get the schnitzel "street-style" - its exactly like the schnitzel in Germany (which I've been searching for since my trip several years ago). SO good! And don't forget to get their gargantuan pretzel! It comes out hot and buttery with two types of mustard. But I think my favorite part was the service. What can I say? Maybe it was my mood, or the good company (I had friends in from out of town), but I sat myself down and before I knew it 3 hours had passed and I just didn't want to get up. Really solid authentic beer selection. The vibe is average for a beer hall, not overly authentic or interesting in any way. And can we talk about the pretzels? Hot damn. Our table must have had about five huge pretzels, which come out fresh and warm on a huge wooden slab, with mustard and beer cheese, of course. The cheese curds were good, too. read more

I really try hard to like this place as this was my fourth visit in about three years. I was there on a Friday night and they were pretty busy. they did not have enough staff, I sat at the bar. The bartender/waiter barely had time to serve me and when I ordered my first beer it was flat he was helpful in giving me another beer, after I flagged him down. Overall the service is very poor and you get the feeling that you are more an inconvenience, not a customer, especially after putting down 30+ for dinner and a beer. the food is good though. read more

Brunch! I haven't been to here for just drinks but I did go for brunch and it was amazing. We tried the pretzel breakfast sandwich and the open face melt and both were fantastic. The potato cakes were tasty as well as the bloody Marys. If you're looking to switch it up on your brunch, I highly recommend it. However I do not recall if they served coffee. read more

This is mostly based on service. Me and my friends came here on a SLOW Sunday afternoon because nothing screams the Sabbath like getting drunk on Sunday. Anyway, there were two other tables there, so this place was empty. Our waitress (brunette, tall, scary wide eyes as if on crack) on the other hand, acted as if she was the BUSIEST waitress in the world, and her rapport rivaled that of an overworked, burned out, doctor at a rundown community clinic (i.e., she acted like she did not have any time for us at all and did not give a fuck). No fucks were given by her that day. It became a joke how she would rush our orders, not even allow us to fully order before she asked someone else what they wanted or simply walked away. We observed her doing this with other tables too. Oh, and nothing says "hey I want a good tip" more than snatching menus from someone's hand or eye rolling when we have to flag you down to order another round. Oh and we had to wave our arms and shout for her to notice us... why? Oh because she was playing with a dog in the bar... Yes, a fucking dog. Someone brought one in and she played with it for 18 mins (I timed it). She would go and pour beer, and go back to the dog, run back to get food and service, go and play with the dog. Did she wash her hands. No. That's disgusting and against health ordinances. We waited 20 mins for our checks to come out after we flagged her down. A friend went up to the bar to go find her. Once our bill came I reminded her that I had a groupon (which I told her in the beginning) she rolled her eyes and snatched the bill from my hand. She came back after 11 mins (I was fucking timing this girl because there was only ONE other table, where the fuck did she go?!) and threw the bill on the table and walked away... I had my credit card in my hand and yelled for her to come back, to which she ignored. My friends were laughing because I was in complete shock that she just .... walked away.... I waited another 6 mins, had enough and went to the bar to pay out. The bartender went and found her hanging out in the back and looked shocked that I was standing at the bar. She asked "did you want something" to which I replied "I've been trying to pay for the past half hour so what do you think...." She did not seem amused. So I paid, crossed out the tip, and left. Seriously, she could have made at least $45 on tips from all of us because we all have been in food service and know how hard it can be... Oh but no, she had a shitty attitude and didn't get shit from me or another couple. And I alone would have tipped my standard 20% and she would have made 20 bucks. Oh and traditional German food is not traditional, but Americanized. Thanks for that too waitress for assuming that I wanted to substitute "German" potato salad that comes with the wurst for good 'ol American french fries without asking. She's such a star. read more

This place is like your friend who's a hot mess. It has a lot to offer but it just can't get its shit together. The food is great-- this is not the issue. But the service and overall atmosphere is a disaster. We (a party of 2) went on a Saturday around 815pm. For a city bar located in the heart of college central (DePaul), they seemed understaffed and stressed at the traffic at the restaurant. It wasn't even overcrowded, tables were filled but the bar was mostly empty. Not sure what was going on. We placed our food order then I accidentally knocked over my water glass. While several of the bar staff noticed this, no one cleaned up the spill for the entire time we were there! Moreover, we gave ourselves an hour and 15 minutes before we had to make a show next door, and our entrees weren't out even 30 minutes after the order had been placed. We ended up having to scrap our order and take the check so we could make the show. Meanwhile, the table behind us was full of rowdy college guys who invited more friends and basically had a party of standing and schmoozing around a table with total disregard for the customers around them. We kept getting bumped. My boyfriend put it perfectly. The food is authentic and all you'd want from a German beer hall, but the service makes you want to run in the opposite direction. read more

I live in Germany. The Franziskaner Weissbier had zero head and was flat. Tried the Hacker-Pschorr Wheat and was almost as flat. Neither served in the proper bier glass. If you're going to open an ethnic restaurant, you should try to keep to the recipes and visit the home country to understand the culture. Had the Wurst board. True German potato salad does not include the skins, the red cabbage wasn't cooked, Germans don't serve yellow mustard, the cucumbers didn't taste pickled. The weisswurst and bratwurst were good. So, while nothing was bad (bier excluded), it just wasn't German. Service was good. read more

However, we went on a Saturday afternoon and it was higher noise level and more of a bar experience rather than a nice lunch experience. I live a couple blocks away from here and have been here more than my fair share of times. The beer menu is very solid - all German of course which is not my favorite but I can't hold that against them! They never seem to be out of anything which can happen at bars with "non-standard" beer selections so that is nice. I have had a couple of things to eat there, but the only thing that stands out is the pretzel. It is ridiculously large and while its good tasting its almost better for the mere entertainment of having such a large pretzel being at the table. Regarding the atmosphere, it gets pretty rowdy at night with lots of drunk people and some intermittent dancing. The music is pretty loud. I have also been there for a soccer game (I think Germany was playing last summer in the Euro Cup) and the place was insane with Germany fans. I am not a huge soccer fan but I would certainly go back for games as it was a great atmosphere. They have an absurd number of TVs so it doubles as a great general sports bar. As people have mentioned, the long wooden tables are cool and allow for communal seating. Overall, I would say it has a great German beer selection, average food, and a good atmosphere if you are looking to kick it up a notch or watch some sports. read more

Love Prost! This is a great spot in the Lincoln Park/DePaul area. Their huge pretzels are delicious and big enough to share with a small group. They have a large selection of beer to choose from and are priced very moderately for the area! I lived in Germany for awhile and love coming in for a delicious liter of Hofbrauhaus! read more

Severely unimpressed. We seriously love German food and drinks and this place was just not up to par. First off, our server was brash an unkind. Beers were not cold and one of the pours was so bad, the server left a foamy mess on our table (which someone else awkwardly cleaned up). Husband ordered the Sheboygan brat...fyi it's literally a single sausage. When he asked the server about the dish he made no effort to explain. I got a chicken sandwich which was oily and meh. Cheese curds were good but how can one really mess that up? Will not return. FYI, if anyone is in Bethesda, MD, Tyber Bierhaus is an amazing German bar to check out...way better than this place. read more

I went out with couple of my friends this past weekend and I enjoyed it. The food was really good (their pork belly burger and pretzel.... you need to try it!) and their beer selection(and the size) was excellent. I personal am not a big fan of the communal seating so giving it minus for that. I will be taking my family out here so they can try the pretzel! read more

STEELERS FANS, this is the place to go! This is currently the home of the official steelers club in Chicago. Came here for a Bears-Steelers game and the place was packed with black and gold. I love this place. I've been there twice so far, and would love to go back, it's just a little out of the way. Both times we had really cool servers who made recommendations and were efficient. I always go with a friend who is well versed in German culture and he orders all the food, so I can't really remember what I have had, but it's all been good. Sausages are all flavorful and juicy, pretzels come out hot and fresh. I'm not much for beer but I love their German Riesling. Parking is a little tough but it's worth it! read more

In response to the reply from Vince B. on my previous post - Thank you for your reply. I was not near my friend when this is said to have occurred and while I have my very serious doubts, I cannot confirm with 100% certainty. To give you the benefit of the doubt, let's assume you are accurate in the statement that a violent threat was made on a member of your staff and you took it seriously. Best practices would have been to: a.) Refund the $24 in drinks just purchased. No amount of profit is worth risking the safety of your staff, especially when someone is "at his limit." b.) Ask the customer(s) to step outside and explain to them the situation. c.) Call the police. If violence is threatened, the police should be involved. Unfortunately, the only explanation that was given from four separate staff members was "I don't know why, the manager just demanded it" and "I'm sorry, the manager must not like you." When I asked to speak to the manager, I was turned away, all while being very polite. At the end of the day, it is up to you on how you would like to run your establishment. I just want to make sure other members of the German community are aware of this experience. read more
