Proto's is a special place to me. It's been a staple in this location for over 25 years, and for good reason. The pizza is always delicious, fresh-made, and served with a great thin crust. I kept it simple with a pepperoni pizza and a couple of drinks--just about the perfect way to enjoy an afternoon. I also tried the Prototini and the classic Cosmopolitan, both of which had delicious flavor and paired well with the meal. Street parking can be a challenge, so a little patience helps. Stopped by Proto's a couple of weeks ago for the first time, and it was amazing to see a true Denver institution in action. They've been open for over 22 years which explains why they are a neighborhood staple known for warm hospitality and technique-driven cooking with obsessive attention to detail, from the pizza to the homemade cannoli and everything in between. We tried a few pizzas and small plates, but my favorites were: - The Savory Panini, a steamy, hot pillow of baked dough topped with crushed red pepper, oregano, and parmesan, served with olive oil and balsamic. - The Hula Pie, with mozzarella, tomato sauce, sliced ham, and fresh pineapple. We also had the tiramisu and their homemade cannoli and both fantastic and a must-order if you love classic Italian desserts. Proto's is proof that consistency and care never go out of style. I've been eating at Proto's since the early days. Always have great/delicious food and great service but the prices have gone so far up that I can't afford to eat here anymore. $34 for a large sausage pizza?!? And by the way their large is 8 pieces, but it's on the smaller side. Man, where have the times gone when it was affordable to take a family here and eat for well under $100. I know they gotta earn living but at what cost to the consumer? Sorry to say I won't be back but it has absolutely nothing to do with the food. Just can't afford it anymore. read more

Loved the pizza!! Decent prices for the different sizes - and it's great there are 3 size options! The vibes are on-point too. It's not super loud, feels down to earth but not casual nor upscale. Good vibes. The service was friendly albeit a bit slow - I had to ask for water refills and catch their eye for the check. But this didn't diminish the experience overall. Definitely a bittersweet experience getting pizza from Proto's. If you like Neapolitan style pizza, this is some of the best I've had in Denver. However, they recently increased the price of their pizzas by like 1/3, making one of their best specialty pizzas (Angel Pie) cost $34! To make it worse, they didn't update the website with that pricing, which shows it at $24, so we had to be told that in person as we were picking up the order. As good as their pizza is and how cool the owner is, their pricing is just way, way off. I don't really recommend this place anymore to people or friends visiting. read more

OMG this place was AMAZING!! Came up to Denver from the Springs and found this place via yelp reviews. Reviews did not do it justice. Service was great and we even got a personalized run down of the pizzas from the owner which was cool. There were 6 of us and we ordered 4 medium so we could have selection. Had the Marguerite, Proto pie, low rider and traffic jam. 2 crowd favs were the low rider and traffic jam but we liked them ALL!! Then we all got dessert and while it was all amazing I think we all agreed the lemon trafulo (sp?) was just insanely incredible. Sorry that I forgot to take pics of the pizza. One day at a time this pizzeria became one of my favorites. Although parking can be hit or miss on the street, it's worth the extra walk from a nearby parking lot. The staff here are invariably pleasant and polite. My multiple visits demonstrate their ability to get things right, my orders were always correct and came out hot. The interior decor and ambiance is relaxing, and the patio is nice but could be bigger. The selection of Napoletana pizza selection is extensive with my favorite being a tie between the Atomica Pie and the Sour Kraut (being Polish). The Friday special is Clam Pizza night with garlic, red or white sauce. The pizzas are amazing, and the crust is never soggy, rather crispy. There's a reason I keep coming back, they have things figured out and close to perfection. Great service and pizza here. We stopped in for Saturday lunch and sat at the bar. We ordered the simple salad $10 which is arugula and a lemon dressing with cheese. We shared it. I wish they had salads with more veggies. The pizza we had was topped with sausage, pepperoni, onion and peppers. The crust is super thin. It was very tasty. Went to Proto's last night with some coworkers as we are out here for a conference. Zach (I believe) was our server. One of the most laid back but upbeat, sincere guys you will meet. He made some great recommendations and we all ordered pizzas. He recommended the habanero honey to drizzle on our pizzas and it was absolute liquid gold. read more

Had take out pizza and salad. Order was ready on time. Crust was thin and wood fired. Arugula said with shaved parm was generous and the dressing was on the side, however the dressing more buttery than lemony. Loved that the restaurant ordered vegan cheese and it was melted . I got their Angel pizza for takeout and it was ready within 10-15 minutes. It's a bit hard to find parking in the area but definitely worth it if you're already in the area. Delicious pizza. Amazing crust. Without a good crust any pizza would be a total sh**. Its the vehicle. I found Protos when I wasn't looking. Isn't it always the case? You will have what you don't want. You won't have what YOU want. The burnt crust on the edges...to me this carcinogenic addition to the regular flavor gives it that extra oomph. Most recently Adam D and I stopped for that much needed pizza + carcinogen refill. I ordered half Margherita and half Green Bell Peoper and anchovies. ( you wrinkle your nose while I enjoy my Zzzza). Their menu is varied enough but not too extensive beyond over reaching that you will feel lost. The fonts are big. Menu uncluttered. The pizza is just too good! Btw- Adam D ordered Traffic Jam. In one word. A big G MESS OF TOPPINGS. Aptly named. It was very windy but we lucked out and was offered a table outside ( they're not doing dine in yet) but it was in between the nooks. But we both ordered the same drink but one is cold and one hot cider laced with some booze. The former was good. But the latter? Oh my. No matter what the time of the day there's this one lady staff who works here. This super busy but very accommodating staff is the best! So, if you're shopping at REI ginger strikes - stop by Protos. Stopped by this location for a quick lunch in the early afternoon during work. We were greeted right away and our server was quick to get our drink & good order. While we waited for our food, we got a chance to look around the restaurant and it was a nice little spot - definitely a good ambiance for a lunch or dinner.
