Usually get our bday cakes from French Confection but decided to give Provencal a chance. My mother ordered a red velvet cake with a sailboat theme for my brothers 21st bday. They said it would be ready at 2pm. I showed up 15 min early but she was still working on the cake and told me it would be ready by 3pm. Ok. Left and came back. I picked up the cake and brought it home. It said happy birthday written in cursive with little squiggles. Barely decorated and no sailboats in sight. I called back and the baker was gone and it was not written on the slip that there should be a sailing theme. The counter girl didn't offer to at least partially discount the $46 I spent and actually said "well it's the right flavor and you took it so". What??? We used to go there all the time. Never again!! Horrible customer service. We will see if the manager calls me back. read more

I was in the area picking apples and tasting wine so I decided a quick bite to eat would be good to keep me going through the rest of the day and the long ride home. I stopped in for something warm. I tried the Portuguese kale soup and because I AM Portuguese I am always ready to try someone's rendition of what they think is Portuguese soup. It was actually really good, but needed more of a kick from spicier chorizo. But hey that could have just been me. It had a cool retro feel, and a book case that could satisfy any reader. It gave you the feeling like, "Hey, stay a while read a book, try a cupcake." But for some reason I didn't want to do any of that and I ate my soup and bruschetta. I didn't like that bruschetta too much because I am a texture person and it was soggy. Less tomato more parmesan cheese. Fixes everything. I will stop in again if I am craving apples and soup in the saem day. read more

Lovely little spot in a very uninteresting strip mall location. We go here almost every weekend (usually to "sneak" my parents some sweets...much to the chagrin of their endocrinologist) and really appreciate the quality of their breads and sweets. Their lunch options can be a bit of a mixed bag, but almost everything is scratch-made and more often than not it's very, very good. My only complaint is that the service can be hit or miss and certain members of the staff don't act like they're all too happy to wait on the customers. Overall, I'd recommend this place as a great reasonably low-stress, rarely overly crowded option for breakfast and lunch. The shining star here is always their breads, which never fail to hit the mark. read more

I was very displeased here. The customer service was terrible. They seemed annoyed by our presence. I ordered the meatball sub and it was very underwhelming. For dessert, I got a fruit tart. There was no custard, just a whipped cream "mixture." On our way out, the owner came and tried to pick a fight with us for questioning her tart. I opted for Italian bread instead - I was sold a MOLDY loaf of Italian Bread for $5.00. I SHOULD HAVE KNOW - WHEN THERE WAS NO BAKERY SMELLS - LIKE THE KIND YOU GET WHEN YOU GO INTO A ******REAL BAKERY***** What a disgrace! I contacted the bakery to give them a head-up that the Italian Bread was moldy and there response was continually directed at the reason there was no Irish Soda Bread! "we did have Irish soda bread earlier" tried to convince me that the "mold" was baked on flour from the bottom of the oven. I was raised on Italian bread - had all sorts and styles of Italian Bread. After church on Sundays my mother would give us Italian bread and bowl of gravy for dipping! Can't lecture me on Italian Bread. It's hit or miss but I keep coming back. Apple bomb, quiche, sticky buns, mini bread loaf and macaroons are phenomenal when they have them. If not I walk out and try again another day. Exceptional phone customer service. I asked for a loaf of bread, crust cut off and cut into 1 inch pieces for a French Toast Souffle and it saved me the hassle and the mess. Deliver as expected. It is pricey but it is fresh. I was also very happy in that they were open during Sandy. I was very happy to have fresh bread when the power went out. The soups haven't wowed me. read more

I visited Provencal Bakery for the first time today and am already planning my next visit!! I went in looking for French macaron's and left with a seven layer bar. There was no way I was leaving there without something sweet and that seven layer bar was awesome. Serving size was so generous that I still have half left for tomorrow's snack. or breakfast! Everything in the bakery case looked so good and the lunch menu looked fantastic, too bad they don't deliver! Customer service was exceptional and that alone will bring me back in. This place completely lacks customer service. The waitress treated my family and melike we we actually bothering her. The meatball sub had so much garlic powder I couldn't eat it. The icing on the cake wad the "fruit tart" which was literally filled with straight whipped cream, no curd to be found. The owner came out to the table only after we paid to ask "if we had a problem with the tart"..I had asked the waitress if it was missing the curd..the owner appeard to be picking a fight with us.she was ready to tell us how wrong we were had we given her the opportunity. I though I would give this bakery cafe a second chance, unfortunately both times I experienced stale bakery goods and poor service. On the first visit, the Women behind the cash wrap got upset with her employees for excepting my credit card because I paid for my expresso that came under their minimum charge. I thought the cashier was having a bad day so went back to buy raisin bread and a french loaf. What a disappointment, the raisin bread was so bland and lacked taste and the french bread was stale, at least two days old. There are so many better bakeries that I won't be back. read more

I take my daughter here after school frequently. We love the people who work here - they have always been super nice. The baked goods are always fresh and delicious! They make a good latte. The only negative is that sometimes later in the day there is a limited selection, but this is to be expected for a bakery. read more

The owner Brenda contacted me and tried her best to correct the issue and expressed her concerns. To be fair, I was mistaken when I had thought that the salad came with chicken however there was still no avocado. Sometimes you cannot control how your staff reacts or handles customers, so I am giving them the benefit of the doubt that this was just an off day. The most important thing that matters to me is that the owner cares enough to reach out and attempts to fix the problems directly. I will try this place one more time. read more

I stopped in to pick up a loaf of bread this week. It cost $5 and I gave a $20. bill. Well, I got back $5 and when I questioned the amount back the cashier said I paid with a $10. I don't think so.So I agreed to let them count the drawer and call me with the results. Never heard a thing and twice after I contacted them they agreed to have the owner call me. Still nothing. So my advice is to pay with a credit card no matter how small the purchase or point out exactly how much u are giving them. It cost me $15 for a loaf of bread. Rather high. read more

I would give it higher stars if it opened at a bakery hour (opens at 8) and if the staff was a bit more friendly. It always seems like I burden them by showing up at the door. When I used a card to pay and put in a pin she told me I must sign it even though the receipt said pin verified no signature required. I pointed out I used a pin and she said it's our policy. I signed but seemed odd. The muffins aren't made fresh daily and noticed it in a chocolate chip I bought for my son the muffin I had was great. I bought some cowboy caviar for the beach as lunch and ordered a pint. There was no price with it in display case and didn't think anything of it until my bill seems high. I asked what was so expensive and she said the pint of cowboy caviar (all veggies and some avocado) was $12.95! The next day they told me it was $13.95 when I went in again and asked another worker. Went in on the recommendation of my beautician. Ordered a lemon bar the size of your hand, a loaf of Italian dipping bread, and a slice of, for lack of the right name, bruchetta stuff. Total came to $8, not too bad. The bruchetta thingy was wonderful, tomamtos and garlic and basil on a slice of toasted bread that had been smeared with olive oil. mmmmmm. (The lemon bar was just ok.) Great food, atmosphere, and service. I ordered the pancakes and my 15 month son devoured them as well as myself with some left over! My husband ordered the all American breakfast which was eggs, toast, and potatoes. Their bread is freshly made and you can taste the difference! So good! Had a lovely lunch there today with my husband. Provencal is a Bakery with breads and cakes and all manner of delightful pastries. However, it also serves soups and salads and sandwiches(Your choice of home made bread). I chose the Curried Chicken Salad on a Baguette, and I took half home. It was delicious and plentiful. The place reminds me of a 50's French Cafe, sans the wine. It is attractively decorated in a 50' style. It is a pleasant place with good food and good service. read more

The service was a little bit slow but the food was worth the wait. It was one of the best sausage egg and cheese sandwiches I have ordered. Had coffee at Provincal today. Waitress was pleasant, coffee was decent...however the cupcakes were DAYS old! I had asked which were fresh and was told "the cupcakes were all made today" .... I found the paper STUCK to a stale cupcake and the frosting crumbled when cut with a fork! I paid over $3 for something that should have been thrown away YESTERDAY! I have given this place a second and third chance because of the location but days old pastry seems to be a constant problem! This is NOT the bakery to get fresh cupcakes for a special occasion. A dozen stale cupcakes will cost a small fortune and embarrassment! I have also seen the owner be demeaning to her employees! My friends and I have noticed they seem happier on the days she is not there. Maybe she will see this review and make some changes! Might I suggest treating people the way you want to be treated. And FYI...FRESH is made same day! Not baked a week earlier and frozen to be frosted at a later date! read more

I went here this Sunday and was very dissatisfied. I had the potato, leek, and broccoli soup and found it to be like baby food....not very good at all. The real killer was the service. The woman who served us was very rude and acted annoyed just by our presence. When we went up to pay at the register she walked over, then the phone rang and she answered it. She ignored my husband who was standing there waiting to pay the bill, then looked up and gave him the "1 minute" signal with her pointer finger and continued to talk on the phone. A couple minutes later she took our payment, while still on the phone, without saying a word to him. We will not return. read more

I adore Provencal. The homemade soups are amazing and have given me sustance through the winter. The bread is amazing. I cannot buy store-bought bread anymore. Get the wheat or anything else, put it in the freezer, and take it out when needed and toast - sublime! Don't have a sweet tooth, but fabulous bakery, and the sandwiches are tremendous (esp. the Italian panini). I have lived in NYC, MA, CT and Chicago. Provencal is my favorite for consistent deliciousness. read more

A long way from Paris....Gave this place another chance thinking they had a bad day last time. Well, hard to believe it was even worse. Took home some soup that was all watery, baked goods were completely stale and the bread I could have used to bang nails. A total waste of money. (34 dollars) Soup went down the drain and even the little roll they give you with the soup was completely stale. To make matters even more painful I ordered a feta and cheese croissant and asked for it warmed. Instead it was frozen inside.. One star is one too many stars here. read more

I want to love this place since the food is always good. But it's hard when everytime I go in alone or with a colleague/friend. It's BAD SERVICE from a couple of the girls! Even the owner has a bit of an attitude which goes to show why the wait staff is always less than happy to take my order (even by phone). I have heard they provide bread/pastires to all of the island, so maybe they feel they make enough money with that, that they don't have to bother with good customer service. After the second time with no dressing on my sandwich which was around $9.00, and the bad service. Today will be the last time I waste my money on a place that doesn't care about the service they provide! read more

I came across Provencal at the farmers market in Newport. I bought a loaf of their sour dough and even though it was expensive, we really enjoyed it. After looking up their opening times at weekends, I headed over there on Sunday morning at 8:30am to get another loaf thinking it would make amazing french toast! Imagine my disappointment when I arrive 1.5 hours after they open to find out they had no bread ready! They had a few loaves of other bread left from the day before, but nothing fresh! I thought this place was a bakery!! To make it worse, I was the only person there and had to ask for attention from the girls behind the counter...apparently what they were doing the day before was more important than acknowledging a customer. Needless to say I want be going back there, or stopping by at the farmers market anymore. I will stick to Katrina's Bakery in Newport - bread is always fresh and the service is warm, friendly and very welcoming. read more
