The bread here is an embarrassment to French bakeries. Everything from the baguettes to the wonderbread they serve with croque madame is extremely disappointing. Worse than a conventional grocery store. Perhaps they have a new baker or management? About two years ago it wasn't *this* bad. I literally threw away my entire croque madame, as it's improperly cooked with the wrong bread and has barely any cheese. Just disgusting wonder bread. They also put spring greens inside of a warm sandwich. Wow. Hint: If you're going to put greens inside a warm sandwich, use fucking frisée like a civilized establishment. And where's the cheese???? Tiny center smear of what looks and tastes like Laughing Cow... not béchamel or gruyere. For fucks sake, this place needs a lesson from Ken Forkish. These folks don't know how to make a proper cappuccino. Order a cappuccino and you get a latte with latte art. When you attempt to enter a dialogue with them regarding the difference between a latte and a cappuccino they are condescending and say things like: "If you go to Italy his is how they make them.". " This is how we make them". I made a career of running coffee houses, training baristas, and roasting coffee. I know a fair bit about espresso and associated drinks. Provisions does not, and more troublesome is that they apparently don't care to learn the difference. The name cappuccino is derived from the order of a Capuchin monks. When the cappuccino drink was first introduced in Italy, it was named after the Capuchin friars because the color of the espresso mixed with frothed milk was similar to the color of the Capuchin robe. read more

(For those of you familiar with Seattle, think smaller-scale Molbak's with its lovely bistro-cafe, crossed with Sur la Table). I came here wanting only one thing: good, fresh, soft black licorice. Found it right away (and it was to die for!). Got swept up in the food demonstration where they were breaking a humongous wheel of aged parmesan cheese and having a wine and cheese tasting at the demo counter. It was so interesting, learning about the cheese. I browsed the large table with sale items on it; there were tons of kitchen accessories and gadgets and lovely hand creams, etc. I marveled at the food counters, with the beautiful pizzas and sides and cakes and cookies. Had to get some macarons and other delicious sweets (don't judge!) and, of course, my licorice. If I lived nearby, I'd be here all the time. What a lovely store! read more

This place drew our attention because it wasn't stressful/crowded, it looked pretty healthy and quick and was fair priced. I like that you have the option of buying from the cold section (yogurt, drinks, ice cream) and ordering from the stand. We ordered a Brie kale sammy and split it. I hated it- partly because it felt greasy and partly because I tried to trick myself into thinking I liked kale. If you do like kale this might be your jam. It was decent sized. The salad was legit. Loved that. My friend got the pizza/salad combo and it was worth it because her salad was basically the size of mine. Nice seating but the food took well over 40 minutes for the sammy. Sheesh! Provisions carries a variety of gourmet items, Fresh Fish and Meat, French style baked breads and pastries, Coffee Bar, Gourmet Salad and Sandwich Bar and Pizza Bar. They also carry gifts like mugs, swell stainless steel bottles, and fine gourmet food gifts that any foodie will love, high quality cooking tools and bake ware and even a great selection of cook books. I had so much fun visiting this market while staying in Eugene and was super excited to visit on their grand reopening as they recently expanded the market. I found myself here every day of my stay in the area, it was especially convenient that I was staying in the hotel located in the same center. The Market is a perfect place to grab a cup of coffee and a French Pastry (their almond croissants are pretty fantastic) for light breakfast. They also have a small breakfast menu with items like croque monsieur, eggs, quiche, yogurt and granola, etc. For a casual lunch or dinner their gourmet salad bar with house made items, really great thin crust pizza with gourmet toppings or sandwich bar provides other great options to grab a quick bite. Service was pleasant and there are many tables inside to dine in. Parking is free for three hours. read more

I'm not sure what this upscale, swanky store/market is doing in eugene. No offense, but I haven't seen many people living here...no any people living here...that would enjoy such refined taste. Eugene is a kind of grungy, pot smoking, meat and potatoes, blue collar place (nothing wrong with that) and I see this store on lido island in Newport Beach or in one of the promenades along Worth Avenue in Palm Beach or some location similar to that. They have an amazing flower, wine and cocktail accoutrements, cheese, tea, olive oil, coffee and more selection. They also have a deli and pizza oven! I definitely wish this store was closer to home. One of the best places to find gifts, household items and all things food-related (spices, salts, cookbooks, condiments, tea--you name it). You can never go wrong with anything from Marche, so I'd definitely recommend their soups, salad bar (one of my favorites in town), pizza, desserts and sandwiches. There's also a great wine bar which does regular sampling's, typically on weekends. You absolutely have to stop by on the Saturday before thanksgiving--they always do a holiday event with lots of wine samples as well as seasonal food samples, and it's totally free. Check their website for events, they have more than just the thanksgiving event! The only downside is that it can be a bit pricey, but you're typically buying high quality items that I think justify the price. Definitely come check it out! read more

While I love the fresh bread, produce, cheese, meat and high-end vinegar, the unfriendly "help" is so consistent that it is a culture of very unhappy, unfriendly people here. Not a place that inspires me to come often and spend money, to be sure. I come here a few times a week, spend a lot of money. I am always friendly and quick with what I need. I usually arrive when it's quiet, no lines of people needing attention...but still, 99 times out of 100 I am treated as though I'm an unwelcome intrusion to someone's day. The last time I was there a couple of days ago, I had a question about some salami I had in my hand. The two guys behind the case turned and disappeared as they saw me approach. No problem, they had more pressing things to see to. So I stood there waiting. A gal was towards the back filling an ice bin, so I waited patiently for her to notice me. She eventually did, then left. No problem, ice melts, this is the priority and I wasn't in any kind of rush. She eventually returned with an empty bin and began rinsing it out at the sink. No problem, she had a task and wanted to see it to completion, I can respect that. I continued to stand there, waiting patiently with a smile. When she finished rinsing the bin she looked right at me, for a pause, then began to whistle a slow tune. She held her gaze at me as she sauntered slowly away -- while whistling. Wow. While this brand of blatant rudeness -- for absolutely no cause what-so-ever -- is the exception, not the rule. However, being treated in such an unfriendly way or being looked at like I'm dumb (which happens a lot), is the general rule here - in my experience of course. This has been my experience at the pizza counter, at the meat counter, at the wine counter, at the cheese counter and at the coffee counter. Consistently. I have come to count on it. To be fair, though, there was also a truly delightful exception to the rule a couple of months ago. There was a friendly gentleman who went out of his way to be helpful and informative and provided the most useful information about sparking wine and bitters. He was a true treasure, but alas, the exception. To sum up, I have grown tired of places that think that they are so special that that they can be rude or just downright unfriendly with intention, and it will be tolerated becase they are just THAT great. No thank you. Life is short and there are other places to buy what you sell. So as you wish and as your management must support or possibly cause, you will have one less customer to "help" going forward. read more

I just wanted a little something for a light dinner so I opted for a glass of local wine and a slice of pepperoni from Provisions. As I've said in other reviews, pizza is a very personal thing and this pizza was waaay too thick and bready for me. It had a strange flavor to the sauce, like it was soured? Unfortunately, you're kinda on your own here. They were nice enough to deliver my slice to me, but that was about it - no one stopped over to see if all was good. In fact, the vibe here is market not restaurant, so probably better for takeout than anything. Last year I ordered mashed potatoes and roasted vegetables for Thanksgiving and they were very good. This year was unfortunately the opposite. The potatoes were watery, not fluffy and creamy. Wow, this place is impressive. We enjoyed two breakfasts and a lunch while we were in town staying at the Inn at the 5th. The avocado toast was excellent, and luckily I saw the note at the cash register to add heirloom tomato, making it even more delicious. The chocolate bouchon doesn't look like anything special, but it is spectacular. Chocolatety, melt in your mouth goodness. We had several over two days...they're that good. The chocolate eclair was equally fabulous, and I appreciate that their pastries are not overly sweet. The almond muffin was also deceptively plain on the outside and absolutely delicious The quiche Loraine was small, but very good. The chocolate chip cookie is very good. The chicken Caesar salad was a very generous portion and the grilled chicken was tender There are plenty of tables are available inside or outside, and the line to order moves quickly. Our food only took about 10 minutes to be brought to the table after ordering. The restaurant is attached to a cute kitchen ware/deli/florist/wine store. Provisions Pizza Diary: Today I ordered the "margherita", in quotes because unlike a real margherita, with a few slices of fresh mozza and the simplicity of the red sauce, fresh basil and crust, this was a slice of cheese pizza with a quarter inch of cheese that is so thick it has bite, and then some redundant islands of fresh mozza. The crust was underdone, no crisp. Thing is, I like cheese. I like the flavors of this pie. But this is not the serious version of what their pie has been in the recent past. My boyfriend and I come here every Sunday. It's been a tradition and we love it. For food they've got a variety of baked goods, desserts, coffee, a salad bar, soup, sandwiches, breakfast items, and pizza. The food is pretty good here. I've had some of the breakfast items and the pizza. I highly recommend the pizza. They use good quality cheeses, the flavors have depth, and the crust is baked to perfection (thin crust that is sturdy and still has a tender chew). They have really great desserts. I personally really like the macarons, croissants, and the tarts but I've never had anything I didn't like. Then there are cute little trinkets/gifts and a market where you can buy fresh veggies and meat/seafood. But that's not all. There is even a flower shop and a shop where you can buy high quality knives, bakeware, barware, serveware, pots/pans, candles, lotions, and so on. They've got it all. This place could use some warmth. The cafe is comfortable but the soups, albeit delicious, seem to have an issue being served hot. It baffles me that I've had to request it that way and a couple of times even sent it back because they like to serve it at almost tepid temperature.
