Clinton has few good restaurants choices. This is the only Thai place in Clinton, Nj. We had stopped going here 5 to 7 years back due to lack of good service and below average food as compared to places about 5 miles away in Flemington or hackettstown. one day we decided to give it a try again. We went for lunch and enjoyed the food and service both. Prices are very good for lunch time. Then I took my family and went for dinner and ohh lord same bad experience which shook us off. We were offered a seat outside. They were rude, we complained about mosquitoes biting us four to five times in an hour but they paid no attention but then after few requests and rounds of requests she brought tikki tourch after an hour of mosquito bites. The menu items were typical and tasteless. My red curry was way beyond spicy, uneatable when we complained they said well this what you ordered ! When as we never ordered any spice level for my dish. Food was not good at all. We came home hungry. On menu they say they will charge a gratuity for group of 5 or more - we were three and they charged us whopping more than 25% tip !!! Just added to the bill for what !??? I am going to take them to small business court for looting the customers with forced tips. Very disappointed overall with food, service and forced gratuity !! Walk in on a Sunday for the first time with my girlfriends, there appears to be an event so we inquire if dining here is buffet style only and the host/server says "no so I guess you're not here with charity?" with an attitude. We had just gone to a wine tasting so we asked also if it were BYOB and the server said "yeah". We were seated and the waitress accidentally spilled our water, on h own accord.. Then our server/hostess comes with the waters and I ask if we can also have glasses for our wine and she snaps and says "um can you wait a second." with an attitude and then when she noticed my friends and I noticed her rudeness she continued, "I know, I'm a pain" We took our wine and left down the street to Neo sushi. If you can tolerate rudeness certainly go ahead and eat here. I work in HR the hospitality industry in NYC and I'd expect small town service to be more courteous. Advise for Pru Thai-- even if the customer is annoying, which I wasn't, I simply stated a request- you don't lose for cool. Granted we were a group of 25 year olds celebrating an engagement of our friend but we weren't rude and barely sat for 5 minutes before the rude hostess snapped at us. Stay away, the food is horrible and service isn't that great. I don't like writing negative reviews but out of the three times I have been there, all three times I have been severely disappointed. Today was the final straw, I had to go there b/c there was no other place to get good thai within a 15 min radius of this place. Pad thai is what the other person ordered, which is hard to screw up but theirs was pretty bland. I ordered a veg/noodle dish that was swimming in corn syrup sauce. It was so gross I gagged. My dish went to the garbage, the other person ate their pad thai saying it was "eh" at best... If you're a vegetarian you MUST go here to try out the mock duck dish. It's made from a meat substitute called seitan. And this particular type of seitan they use here is unbelievably delicious. It's much different that the rubbery-type seitan you buy in grocery stores. It's incredibly flavorful with a succulent texture. And the mock duck is served with basil, onions and peppers. Absolutely amazing. It's one of the best vegetarian dishes in the tri-state area. I always get this dish when I go to Pru. So I don't know much about the other selections. Some notes though from things I heard from some recent co-diners: 1. Don't ask for any spicier than what's on the menu because it will verrrry hot! 2. The papaya salad is wonderful. 3. The veggie tom yum soup is also good. As far as the atmosphere, it's a very cozy and romantic restaurant when not so busy. But it is packed almost every weekend night and loses some of its charm when it's so busy. Of course that depends what table you get. Ask to sit near the windows on the wall facing the road. Don't sit near where people come to pick up take out food. It's a small restaurant so people will be standing next to your table and fidgeting while waiting for their take out food. So you won't be able to completely relax. It's BYOB which helps keep expenses down and lets you bring the wine you like. This is a really cool restaurant that definitely needs to be supported. We usually do takeout here, but have eaten in the restaurant a few times. The menu is good & their specials are interesting. They have seemed to have a recent turnover in wait staff from several months ago, so my in restaurant experience may be old. The service is OK. Not bad, not great. The presentation and portions are decent. For take out, they used to be slow. if they told you 20 minutes, it would take about 30. That has changed for the better. The last few times I have ordered out, the food was ready the time that they estimated. Check the order before you leave, they tend to miss a rice order or two. Their duck is really good. the duck ginger is always tasty and a great option for those not in the mood for a spicy thai dish. The saying "Three strikes and you're out" is my review of Pru Thai. The first time I went we didn't feel like driving to the Thai kitchen in Somerville so we chose the Pru Thai.... we were really disappointed with our food. It didn't quite taste right, the chicken was oily and off tasting, our other dishes weren't good either....but we thought "maybe they're just having an off night" Second time: we brought visiting family members. We ordered two pots of tea, both were lukewarm, (I'm talking temp you would bathe a newborn in.) Food again was flavorless, oily, not appetizing but to add to the night, the service was rude. Somehow it was my fault the tea was tepid.....still trying to figure that out. Third time: we decided to skip the rude service and order take out. 2 entrees, two side dishes, ready in 30 mins. We arrived 30 mins later and gave them our name to pick up the order....."What order" and looks of confusion among the staff. Then, one of the staff said they were going to prepare it and would we like a drink while we wait. Complimentary drinks for them forgetting our order? "Sure" I'm easily appeased! ..............45 mins later our food was now ready! And those complimentary drinks, not complimentary after all, yep, tacked onto the bill. I have to think people who give this restaurant good reviews must either A.) not have taste buds for good food, or B.) are masochists because they like the service. I love Pru Thai! The only reason I give it 4 stars is because it's not may absolute favorite Thai place. Every time I visit my boyfriend in Readington we usually go here, it's one of our main places to go and we love it! Even though there are closer places around we make the little trip over there. We always start off with a salad with peanut dressing and it's GREAT. The salad is a good size to start off with if you're not getting any appetizers. It comes in big lettuce forms but they give you a knife to cut it with, it's always been fresh for us and the dressing is delicious! Sometimes it can be a hassle to cut up the lettuce but it's well worth it. I would definitely recommend starting off with a salad. I normally get Pad Thai with veggies and tofu and I've always liked it a lot. I've gotten a few other things but this is probably my favorite and I know, the most typical thing that people get.. but I recommend it! I'm not big on spice so I wouldn't know how to rate it on that. My boyfriend always gets Masamum curry, a little spicy and he loves it. I have been going here for years, and it is so consistantly great I can't stand it! I want to smash Oliver L's face for giving it 1 star...not really...but really. I will admit it has had a bit of transofmation, staff-wise, over the past few years...but I would have never called it "crappy service". We all have the occasional bad experience though. Actually tried the Tom Kha last night with veg and tofu, a very tangy coconut broth, quite refreshing soup though. The Mock duck was outstanding as usual, I request it very spicy, and they always deliver witht he spice...never overwhelming, but I never find it lacking. Texture and consistancy of this dish is amazing...it has never been even mediorce once. I have been here with numerous folks, and I don't recall anyone ever walking out even remotely disappointed. We all waited anxiously for Pru Tea to open next door, and it was well worth the wait. A very nice selection of teas, and my particular favorite addition...bubble tea! Had the Macha Green last night, and it was superb. Seating inside is nice, warm but dark atmosphere, nothing too bad though...you can still enjoy a group/family meal, or an intimate date night. Outdoor seating is limited, and better for smaller groups, but the arbor trellis alley way-ish area is very nice, and the fountain provides some calming yoga vibe. This was my first Thai food experience and it was excellent. The service was reasonably good considering there was only one waiter, but he was very apologetic for our short wait. The food was enjoyable, and the Thai ice tea was amazing; a definite must. We ate outside, but from what we saw the inside was adorned with Thai decorations that set a pleasant atmosphere. As a local business owner in Clinton, I frequent most restaurants in town. Unfortunately, this is not one of them. I had a negative experience some time ago which kept me from visiting. Tonight, my wife was craving Thai...and our favorite Thai place in Easton, PA was closed for vacation. So - we decided to give Pru a shot for pick up. Well, the rating should speak for itself. I ordered a green curry dish with chicken, with a little spice. My wife had the tofu with veggies in ginger sauce, along with an order of vegetable spring rolls. Total order just under 40 (ouch...not even a glass of wine!) To start from the beginning. Spring rolls pretty good. I have had much better dipping sauces, but overall, good. The tofu with veggies in ginger sauce was ok. My wife complained that the ginger over powered the dish. Too strong. My dish, with a little spice, still sits in front of me next to a big glass of milk. They killed the dish. Way too hot. Maybe they mixed up atomic with little spice??? What a waste. Still can barely feel the inside of my mouth..and I enjoy spicy foods! Overall, to be desired. Recommend heading towards Bridgewater or Easton before going here. This is the third time I've been to Pru Thai. The previous two times I came away thinking the food was OK. This time, I thought the food was awful. I order pad thai shrimp. I get this often in New York at street carts and expected it to be better, because it was about 50% more expensive. It was not. It was extremely bland and even after putting peanut sauce and soy sauce on it, it was still bland. I couldn't finish it. The dish my wife ordered was so bad she could even eat it. Definitely a pleasant surprise to see this cute Thai place on Clinton's Main St. I was impressed by how rich the colors were inside and the lovely, bold decor. But the weather outside was just too nice to be missed out on so we sat ourselves in their sunny outdoor alleyway. I can't really rave about the food. Not a great curry selection (at least on the lunch menu). I went for the Drunken Noodles and it was a bit too heavily sauced (too drunk?). Maybe grass is greener, but my boyf's Pad Thai was looking pretty tasty. Oddly enough, we both agreed the salad was the highlight. A chunk of iceburg with a great Thai dressing, tofu, and a rice chip (?). The only reason I only gave Pru Thai a four out of five is because the Thai restaurant in Bridgewater is truly perfect. However, Pru Thai is clean, well run and makes great food. The restaurant is relatively small but you never feel cramped or uncomfortable. The staff is attentive, helpful and friendly. As others have mentioned, Pru Thai is not overly expensive but not cheap. Dinner for one will run about $20 including drinks, entree and gratuity. The Thai drinks are refreshing and unique, I would recommend everyone trying them. Personally, I enjoy the appetizer sampler and chicken pad thai. Anyone in the nearby area should give Pru Thai a try. read more

A fantastic, intimate restaurant in a nice little town. My husband and I recently went for our wedding anniversary. We thought we would walk around town first and then go in to eat to build up an appetite. It was about 7:30 PM on a Sunday and I think we were the only ones on the main street in town (perhaps one other couple was walking around). But boy were we surprised when we went into the restaurant! It was loaded with people - I guess that's where everyone was that night! Luckily, we got a table right away, and someone waited on us soon after. She was already prepared with wine glasses and bottle opener which was great and unexpected. Some favorites of mine are their appetizers, particularly chicken satay and vegetable spring rolls. I am a pretty picky eater and so it's kind of amazing that I can go to a restaurant and have a few items on the menu that I like. What is nice is when you can go with a group and each try something new and not have to commit to a whole entree yourself. I personally love their black noodles and drunken man noodles, neither of which are too spicy. For a safer choice, Khoa Pad is wonderful and such a comfort food. They also do a great Pad Thai. Make sure you head next door to Pru Tea if you can, they have some really wonderful desserts which are a great compliment to a very enjoyable meal. read more

We've been dining here for years, and can undoubtedly call ourselves fans. This is our 'go-to' place in the area. My kids love the soup and sticky rice, and I am a huuuuuge fan of their Koong Ob Woon Sen. They get pretty crazy busy during the nights, but the waitstaff is always very cheerful and friendly. BYOB with no corkage is another great feature. Crying tiger is a fantastic dish for beef lovers. They also have a couple of 'off-menu' items - always good to ask. Last time, they whipped up a fried rice mixed with basil curry that just turned out lovely. They should put it on the menu! I would wholeheartedly give them four and a half (can't do that on Yelp) or five stars, but I wish they would have a little bit more variety. While we have no qualms eating their homestyle food every week, a part of me wishes they would come up with some variety, to spice things up a bit. In addition, we order a chicken and beef Satay. Most of the items we order just had no flavor. The Drunken Man noodles were the only item I would give a 3 Star. Simply being a Thai restaurant in sleepy Clinton, NJ earns Pru Thai a few stars. Thankfully, they provide all the basic Thai dishes, competently prepared and in a nice setting. Pru Thai is a clean restaurant with a nice moody atmosphere. The service is good and it's easy to enjoy your time there. For many years, I've gotten take out from Pru Thai. Since I've had all the standard Thai dishes on their menu, I can say that their food is equivalent to other Thai restaurants. Their dishes are done right, exactly what you'd expect, though they aren't five-star amazing. This is fine, because they don't charge five-star prices. Sure, over the years there have been a few mistakes to my take out orders, but that's understandable. I have tried to like this restaurant, as I really like Thai food. But after last night's take-out order I felt I just had to post something about the low quality of the food. The "Tofu Feast" was six strips of fried tofu on a bed of soggy pre-frozen spinach, with three slices of bok choy and a side of oily peanut sauce. I had to throw it out. Another shrimp dish with cashews had a total of 4 cashews and was swimming in hoisin/cornstarch sauce. In general, I would say this place is on par with any other average Chinese restaurant. I don't see the fresh, lively spices of Thai cooking, and frequently the vegetables are tired or non-existent. Where are the lemongrass, galangal and other signature Thai flavors? They really are Thai, image that! I've been all over for good Thai food, been to Somerville, been to Bridgewater, So. Plainfield....Pru Thai and Pru Tea is better than all of them.
