This time, we didn't have to wait to get seated but it took 15 mins (after raising my hand multiple times) just for a server to come and get our orders. No water was given throughout the wait either. Then before we can order, the server gave us a heads up that he has 4 to 5 big groups ahead of us and it will take at least 15 mins for us to get our food. There are 5 of us in our group and we just told our server we will just leave and go somewhere else because we knew it will not just take 15 mins for us to get our food. This was my 1st time there. I wanted a sandwich so my son and I decided to try this Vietnamese place. We were getting the grilled pork baguette sandwich. The sandwich was good, but the bread was stale like maybe a couple of days old and they just put it in the oven The meat was really good. I might try to come back at least one more time. My family and I came here after I finished my shift from work on a Saturday afternoon. The owner of Phuong Trang told us some time ago that he would be opening a "sister" restaurant called PT Eatery and we had been counting the days until the opening since the time he told us the exciting news. The ambiance is relaxing and easy on the eyes. Very reminiscent of walking into a spa lobby or something of that effect. The music that was playing sounded like a derivative of the Lo-Fi genre. Nonetheless, it set the stage for a "chill" and relaxing dining experience. The staff was very attentive to our needs and I respect the fact that they took the time in the beginning to go over the PT Eatery specials, or, in other words, the entrees and appetizers that set them apart from Phuong Trang and give them a competitive edge over other Vietnamese restaurants in San Diego. The dishes our waiter mentioned was the Pho French Dip, the Short Rib Pho, and the Garlic Butter Baby Back Ribs. We ordered two items out of those three specials, which were the ribs and the Pho French Dip, along with their "Phuong Trang" classics, such as the Chicken Chow Fun and the BBQ pork meatball spring rolls. Their classic dishes were delicious, as always. As far as the Pho French Dip, I definitely tasted the star anise that was marinated into the brisket of the Banh Mi part of this dish, which gave it that sweet flavor, together with the sautéed onions and bean sprout combination that topped the sandwich. The pho broth was on the side, which also came with the usual fixings that are usually provided with pho (i.e: basil, jalapeños, a slice of lime). The pho broth and the warmly toasted baguette with the beef brisket and fixings definitely complimented each other when eaten together. I would have to say the highlight of our dinner, though, was the garlic butter baby back ribs. However, I've read some of the reviews previously that suggested the ribs were loaded with MSG and should be reduced during preparation, but I feel it has the same balance of flavors as their garlic butter chicken wings, which most Phuong Trang regulars will agree is one of the dishes they are most known for. The ribs were crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. This is a dish you'll definitely want to order if you ever choose to dine here. Lastly, I tried their Green Thai Tea with crystal boba, which I have a profound appreciation for, considering I'm addicted to boba drinks. The green part of the thai tea I'm assuming is either pandan or matcha, but I know it's naturally derived. It's a balance of that bitter tea flavor with the sweet coconut milk-like flavor that balances each other out. Overall, I had a great dining experience here, with great food and great servers. I discovered this place after coming to mine and my friends' holy grail hangover meal place at Phuong Trang. They told us they were out of the ingredients for pho and would be a 30-40 minute wait so we should head over to their second location where there would be no wait, same menu, and all the other good things Phuong Trang has, but two blocks away. Because of this, I came into this place with a clear intention of comparing it to the parent restaurant. There's plenty of parking and is the same plaza as Lolita's. PT Eatery is simply put: a more Americanized and modernized version of the original Phuong Trang restaurant. They serve wine and beer, and the menu is only in English versus the Vietnamese & English counterpart. I was slightly disappointed to see that even though the host at Phuong Trang said it was the same menu, it was clear that it had been simplified and the options were more limited to include only their staple dishes. I do however like the addition of the small option of their combo pho since other places only have the large option. The food quality is pretty much on par with the original Phuong Trang. I felt they gave me twice the amount of noodles to soup and meat ratio for my pho, which can be good if you prefer a lot of noodles. I, however, would have preferred less noodles since by the time I drank all the soup there were still tons of noodles left. The glazed wings are, I'm assuming, fish sauce fried wings. They're the staple of Phuong Trang, so I recommend you try it at least once! All in all, I would come back here again. Mom and I were craving grilled/roasted catfish rolls (cá nướng da giòn) and the OG restaurant Phuong Trang said they didn't have it there anymore but to go to their newer second restaurant, PT Eatery. Despite me not being completely over the fact that they took over the space of the former Pho T Cali, I agreed to give them a try anyway. We called ahead as recommended and they confirmed to come in about 1.5 hrs. We ran some errands then showed up at the restaurant on time. They had the rice paper and veggies set up ready for us, but we had to wait another 20-30 min before the catfish finally came out. Overall, I'd give the whole meal a 6 or 7 out of 10. It could've been more crispy than chewy and the selection of vegetables could've been better, maybe more mint leaves and omit the basil leaves. We did order an extra plate of veggies because we really like our veggies. If I was craving this again in the future, I'd return. Our server was super nice. But just surprised we had to wait so long to eat even though we called ahead and arrived when they told us to. read more

I had a strong craving for Pho and thought I should give this place a shot. I ordered a pho tai chin and it came out quite quickly. First sip of the broth and I was completely disappointed. There's no depth of flavor and seasoning was lacking. It was as if they just threw some beef flavor broth cubes instead of simmering actual bones. + 1 star since they do give a good amount of protein. I definitely would not come back for their pho again and would take the time out to drive a little further for better pho. We tried to visit their sister location Phuong Trang on Convoy but they were closed for the night. While we were at the door reading the sign, a member of the staff came out to tell us PT Eatery was open. He even offered to call ahead to hold a table for us. When we got there, they were waiting for us with a table all ready. I was Jonesin' for a bowl of Pho but my Husband was in the mood to try something new. He saw the description for the Coconut Rice Bowl and asked about it. It peaked his interest. We also got an order of Egg Rolls. They were amazing! Much bigger than we were used to and so flavorful. The same team member we spoke to at Phuong Trang (I think he may have actually been the owner) stopped by our table to chat. It's obvious he is very proud of the restaurant and told us about educational workshops they hold for children to teach them about Vietnamese food and culture. My Pho was fantastic, and Jamie loved his Coconut Rice Bowl. It comes with a small bowl of hot Coconut milk. They told Jamie to pour it over his meal and also to pour in some fish sauce. You can see the look of joy on Jamie's face when he tasted his food. You can tell he really liked it! This is a great restaurant with a staff that is very proud of what they make and it shows. The bbq pork was a ground pork patty and not a pork chop like other Vietnamese restaurants. Wish they gave you more sauce and also that the sauce had more flavor. Phuong Trang on Convoy was closed for a bit so I've been coming here for pho instead because simply put, the pho here is good. I like their rare steak. For first-timers, you walk in and a server will ask for the # of people in your party, and then they will seat you based on availability. Their menu is pretty extensive. They have appetizers, rice paper wraps, soups, coconut noodle bowls, fried rice, rice plates, stir-fried vegetables, and for the vegetarians out there, they do have a menu section for that. I've had their drinks here and their Thai Tea is bomb. Same with the Green Thai Tea and their Vietnamese Coffee. The coffee is creamy and strong so if you're not used to it, don't get it. For me personally, I like to drink the coffee a bit and then dilute it with some water so it's like I have more lol. Anyway, I used to come here for the rare steak pho, but if you know me I like to venture out and try different things. When I try something different, it usually leads to mixed feelings, disappointment, or a new favorite. So one day I decided to try something new here and now I've decided that if I ever come here again, it would be for the Vietnamese Beef Stew. They have that dish either as a side with a loaf of bread, lime slices, and a mix of salt and pepper, or you can get it in the pho version. I really like both so it's hard for me to decide which one I would wanna get next time. In any case, it's good. TL;DR Even if you get the wrong thing you ordered, it still tastes good. Came here for a family Sunday dinner with our in laws. Overall the food was delicious. The only item that isn't picture is the bun Bo hue. I got the coconut noodle bowl. It was like udon noodles with green onions wrapped with sliced beef and veggies. For the sauce it was fish sauce and a side of their coconut sauce as well. I haven't tried a fish like this before. I mixed both sauces in the bowl (assuming that's how you eat) it was delicious. It was light in flavor, the coconut wasn't overwhelming and the fish sauce is a little sweeter but together it was delicious. I would definitely recommend. My husband had the bun Bo hue. He said it was ok. I thought the broth was delicious. My daughter ordered the walnut shrimp. She wasn't a fan but she ate it anyway. The rest were our in laws. Love the salt and pepper tofu. Went here bc their original location did not have dine in services. Came in around 3:30 to avoid the crowds and there was only 1 other party. It was promising until another party came in and sat in the booth right behind us when the whole restaurant was open!?! We ordered 2 nem nuong spring rolls, bun thit nuong, banh hoi chao tom/nem nuong, and com tam bi suong cha Chung. The food came shortly after and it looked good, but flavors was not there and lost my appetite after flies kept swarming my table. Also the chao tom was not wrapped around sugarcane as advertised. All the meats basically looked the same. Service wasn't the greatest. I had to flag him done to get the check and then had to go to the counter to pay bc he never came back to get my card. Interior was modern but was not clean. Floors was sticky by the register. But the flies is a no-no for a so called-modern place. 1 star for atmosphere and service 2 star for food. read more

I'm a big fan of Phuong Trang in the Convoy District so when I read the Tin Fork article in the SD Reader about PT Eatery, it was on my list. I stopped in for lunch today and checked em' out. They have a great menu and I chose the veggie noodles stir fry with egg noodles. The place was not too crowded but certainly busy. The interior is very nice and modern with big nice murals painted on either side of the interior. The food is very good and I would certainly recommend it. read more
