PT eatery will always be one of my favorite spots to have Vietnamese food. I love getting their chicken wings, fried rice, eggrolls, and of course pho! This is my go-to place for Vietnamese food in San Diego. PT Eatery is actually the sister restaurant to Phuong Trang (also in Convoy), which our family has gone to for years. I find the service (in non-COVID times as well) faster and friendlier here at PT Eatery. Many of the menu items are same/similar to Phuong Trang, but Phuong Trang's menu is a lot bigger. We ordered egg rolls, chicken spring rolls, chicken pho (add veggies), short rib pho, and wonton egg noodle soup. Everything in the take out order was packaged very nicely, with the soup separated from the noodles and fix ins, and the lettuce/herbs for the egg rolls separate as well. Decent Pho place, but my recommendation is that you stick to the soups. I've had the Pho, the fresh spring rolls and also the Vietnamese traditional beef stew, all of which were very good. However I ordered the tofu stir fry, and that was not good at all; the fried tofu was soggy and the sauce was watery and lacked flavor, mostly tasting of fish sauce. Not good at all! Came here on a Friday night with two friends. My first time here, and they said this place was a solid Vietnamese place and a sister restaurant to the nearby Phuong Trang which we also enjoy. I opted for some pho, and my friends shared another pho and some garlic butter baby back ribs. We ordered and then sat outside. They had 4 tables outside- two on either side of the entrance. One side had a ceiling light out so it was dark, the other had one table full of plates and food from previous diners that hadn't gotten cleaned yet. We took the last available table. Prices were pretty standard, and the food came out in a timely matter along with our drinks. However, the pho was just okay, nothing special- we have yet to find "the" spot for Pho in San Diego. Even the friends I was with- even their pho didn't taste as good as they said they have had it before. However, the baby back ribs we're pretty good, so I can recommend that. Service was not good. Though the food did come out in a good timely matter, after we got all our food, they never came back to check on us. PT Eatery is located where Pho T Cali used to be. I actually came here on accident. I've dine here before when it was Pho T Cali, but I haven't dined in here now that it's PT Eatery. I called Phuong Trang several weeks ago for takeout during this COVID-19 Pandemic, when I arrived at Phuong Trang there was a sign on the door that it was closed and it re-directed me to PT Eatery (I had no idea the two restaurants were related), I guess that's what the guy was telling me on the phone when I was ordering but I didn't understand him. My roommate and I each ordered the Combo Pho and I also got a side of the BBQ Pork Meatball Rolls (Goi Cuon Nem Nuong). Our order was carefully packed and they gave a generous portion of meat and all the fillings. The pho was delicious and it really hit the spot! There was so much that I couldn't finish it all in one sitting. The spring rolls were pretty good but I think I like the pork rolls at Pho Duyen Mai better. Great Pho! My go-to for non-pho Vietnamese. And with better service than its sibling, Phuong Trang. Phuong Trang seems to be one of the most popular and well known Vietnamese restaurants in San Diego. The thing is, that popularity comes at a cost. There is usually a wait for Phuong Trang, and even when you sit down, their service can be slow and uneven. Enter its sister restaurant, PT Eatery. PT Eatery has most of the same menu items as Phuong Trang (including those famous wings), but there is almost never a wait, and the service is very quick. And the quality of the food is the same. My favorite thing to get here is the combination broken rice, which has a shrimp cake, meatloaf, pork skin, and your choice of pork chop, grilled pork, or pork patty. Definitely get the pork patty, it is something unique and delicious. The portion is huge and a good value, you will definitely have leftovers. My second favorite thing is the beef tenderloin with plain fried rice. The tenderloin is like a less saucy version of bo luc lac (shaking beef) served on a hot platter. The fried rice is okay. It's a little more expensive but worth it. My third favorite thing is vermicelli with pork patty and spring rolls. The spring rolls here are excellent, wrapped in rice paper (not egg roll wrapper), which gives a great chewy and crunchy texture. My favorite cha gio are from Tu Lan in San Francisco, but these are pretty good. My fourth favorite thing is the wonton noodle soup. I like both the broth and the wontons better here than at the beloved Minh Ky, which I find to be a bit bland. I know everyone loves the wings, and they are pretty good, but prices have gone up a bit. If I'm going to be spending that kind of money for wings, I'm going to Cross Street. Finally, the pho here is good but Pho Hoa in City Heights is my go-to spot. But for non-pho, PT Eatery is an easy choice. read more

Local friend suggested we come here so maybe our expectations were a bit high. So first the good: 1. The pho soup is fairly authentic Vietnamese. We also ordered the crab soup which was also decent. 2. Place is a bit cleaner than other Vietnamese restaurants. A minor issue to start: they seem to be short staff and took forever to take our orders and food to come. Since it is the holidays, I'd say it is understandable but it shouldn't sacrifice quality. Now the real issues: 1. We ordered extra large pho. The noodles came out stuck together which meant it sat for a while after boiling. 2. The pho soup that came out wasn't hot enough which resulted in the beef being undercooked. We couldn't use the hot soup to cook the beef. 3. We were sharing the pho with a child and he was slow to eat. Since the soup wasn't hot enough and the noodles were sticky when it came out, the slow eater requested more soup. I asked waitress to provide more hot soup and she complied. However I saw an extra $2 on our bill for a tiny 32 ounces of hot soup which I deem unacceptable. I'm willing to pay for it but at least warn me about the extra charge. 4. My friend also wanted one thing to take away. It took 30 minutes for them to make it for us. We ordered the takeout before we finished our meal so we can help them turn the table over faster too. read more

There were about 3 tables sitting already, one server taking orders, and two others at the cash register. We were only acknowledged when my wife walked by the server at the table. We ordered the egg rolls and four entrees. Egg rolls were decent. They were hot and fresh but not much seasoning. The pho had a good amount of meats and noodles. Broth was on the lighter side. Fried rice was bland. Orange chicken was alright. Needed more acid or citrus. We got our last entree basically after everyone was done with their meals. We had to ask about it 3 times and the last time we had to go to the kitchen to ask. We had to ask for our check on 3 occasions as well. Last time we had to go to the front to get our check that was sitting in the tray waiting while there were 2 hosts standing there. Would not recommend this location at this point. After being stuck at home for weeks, I gave into my craving for pho and called my favorite place Phuong Trang for a pick up order. Turns out "PT Eatery" is their new location (opened just six months ago) and they are handling all orders for the two PT locations while we're in COVID lockdown. I ordered the Pho Tai (pho with rare steak slices) and it was absolutely perfect. Pho broth was in a separate soup container, and the veggies and meat placed neatly into their own plastic tray. Meat was placed in its own ziplock bag. Veggies included generous serving of fresh thai basil, sliced white onions, bean sprouts, jalapeño slices, lime wedge, plus diced cilantro and scallions. Came with plenty of hoisin and sirracha sauce packets too. When I got home I assembled my bowls of noodles and fixings while heating up the pho broth until just boiling, from there you just pour the hot broth over the bowl of goodies, and ta-da, perfect pho tai. See pictures for the to-go spread before assembly. I was too ravenous to take and pictures of the ready bowls, lol, but trust me it was glorious. Also just a quick note to say that the staff I interacted with were all wearing masks and being very cautious and courteous observing the social distancing rules. PT Eatery (PTE) stands for Phuong Trang Eatery and is the sister restaurant of their other very popular Vietnamese restaurant located on Convoy Street not too far away. It received a pretty nice facelift after being taken over from the prior owners and is much cleaner and spread out than Phuong Trang. PTE has had its share of hiccups (not having enough servers, busers, & cashier) when COVID was nearing the end of its restrictive dining safety measures. But PTE has seemed to catch up and be back in full swing. The only problem is if dining here during dinner hours Thursday-Sunday may be a wait for a table, more so if your party is a large one. Our go-to entrees we have when dining here include: their Garlic Butter Wings, Garlic Butter Ribs, Glazed Wings, Vegetarian Spring Rolls, Char-Grilled Pork Chop, Sizzling Beef Tenderloin with Fried Rice, and Crispy Pan Fried Noodles with Vegetables. All of the following could feed 8 easily and have some leftovers for take home. Their Garlic Butter Wings and Glazed Wings are MUST ORDERS. The Sizzling Beef Tenderloin has come to our table a little over-cooked (well done) the last two times we've dined here and is our sole reason for our rating of 4, otherwise it would have been a 5. Depending on how busy they are, service can be challenging to flag down a server to get water refilled, request extra napkins, to-go containers, or be provided your check so you can pay at the counter. Their restrooms have been clean every time we've gone recently and parking isn't an issue. The only thing I'd warn those wishing to dine here is to avoid the busiest times (dinner time Thursdays thru Sundays), or if you have to do it, go earlier or later so your wait for a table won't be long, and the service you receive won't be overwhelmed or slow. We called ahead as recommended and they confirmed to come in about 1.5 hrs. We ran some errands then showed up at the restaurant on time. They had the rice paper and veggies set up ready for us, but we had to wait another 20-30 min before the catfish finally came out. Overall, I'd give the whole meal a 6 or 7 out of 10. It could've been more crispy than chewy and the selection of vegetables could've been better, maybe more mint leaves and omit the basil leaves. We did order an extra plate of veggies because we really like our veggies. If I was craving this again in the future, I'd return. Our server was super nice. The first guy I asked about the menu, and I was pretty surprised he was very lost and confused. This time, we didn't have to wait to get seated but it took 15 mins (after raising my hand multiple times) just for a server to come and get our orders. No water was given throughout the wait either. Then before we can order, the server gave us a heads up that he has 4 to 5 big groups ahead of us and it will take at least 15 mins for us to get our food. There are 5 of us in our group and we just told our server we will just leave and go somewhere else because we knew it will not just take 15 mins for us to get our food. My family and I came here after I finished my shift from work on a Saturday afternoon. The owner of Phuong Trang told us some time ago that he would be opening a "sister" restaurant called PT Eatery and we had been counting the days until the opening since the time he told us the exciting news. The ambiance is relaxing and easy on the eyes. Very reminiscent of walking into a spa lobby or something of that effect. The music that was playing sounded like a derivative of the Lo-Fi genre. Nonetheless, it set the stage for a "chill" and relaxing dining experience. The staff was very attentive to our needs and I respect the fact that they took the time in the beginning to go over the PT Eatery specials, or, in other words, the entrees and appetizers that set them apart from Phuong Trang and give them a competitive edge over other Vietnamese restaurants in San Diego. The dishes our waiter mentioned was the Pho French Dip, the Short Rib Pho, and the Garlic Butter Baby Back Ribs. We ordered two items out of those three specials, which were the ribs and the Pho French Dip, along with their "Phuong Trang" classics, such as the Chicken Chow Fun and the BBQ pork meatball spring rolls. Their classic dishes were delicious, as always. As far as the Pho French Dip, I definitely tasted the star anise that was marinated into the brisket of the Banh Mi part of this dish, which gave it that sweet flavor, together with the sautéed onions and bean sprout combination that topped the sandwich. The pho broth was on the side, which also came with the usual fixings that are usually provided with pho (i.e: basil, jalapeños, a slice of lime). The pho broth and the warmly toasted baguette with the beef brisket and fixings definitely complimented each other when eaten together. I would have to say the highlight of our dinner, though, was the garlic butter baby back ribs. However, I've read some of the reviews previously that suggested the ribs were loaded with MSG and should be reduced during preparation, but I feel it has the same balance of flavors as their garlic butter chicken wings, which most Phuong Trang regulars will agree is one of the dishes they are most known for. The ribs were crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. This is a dish you'll definitely want to order if you ever choose to dine here. Lastly, I tried their Green Thai Tea with crystal boba, which I have a profound appreciation for, considering I'm addicted to boba drinks. The green part of the thai tea I'm assuming is either pandan or matcha, but I know it's naturally derived. It's a balance of that bitter tea flavor with the sweet coconut milk-like flavor that balances each other out. Overall, I had a great dining experience here, with great food and great servers. I discovered this place after coming to mine and my friends' holy grail hangover meal place at Phuong Trang. They told us they were out of the ingredients for pho and would be a 30-40 minute wait so we should head over to their second location where there would be no wait, same menu, and all the other good things Phuong Trang has, but two blocks away. Because of this, I came into this place with a clear intention of comparing it to the parent restaurant. There's plenty of parking and is the same plaza as Lolita's. PT Eatery is simply put: a more Americanized and modernized version of the original Phuong Trang restaurant. They serve wine and beer, and the menu is only in English versus the Vietnamese & English counterpart. I was slightly disappointed to see that even though the host at Phuong Trang said it was the same menu, it was clear that it had been simplified and the options were more limited to include only their staple dishes. I do however like the addition of the small option of their combo pho since other places only have the large option. The food quality is pretty much on par with the original Phuong Trang. I felt they gave me twice the amount of noodles to soup and meat ratio for my pho, which can be good if you prefer a lot of noodles. I, however, would have preferred less noodles since by the time I drank all the soup there were still tons of noodles left. The glazed wings are, I'm assuming, fish sauce fried wings. They're the staple of Phuong Trang, so I recommend you try it at least once! All in all, I would come back here again.
