The restaurant was extremely busy and even though I had called earlier - it still took about 20 to 30 minutes for the fish to come out. The fish was massive, but super good! My mom is a very picky eater sometimes... But she really liked their catfish because they did a really good job to get it super crispy, which she loved. I would definitely recommend this dish because it's super good and can probably feed up to five people. The catfish was super juicy, but the skin was crispy and just so delicious. One of my favorite places to take people for Vietnamese food when they're in town. I'm a long time visitor of their OG restaurant, Phương Trang. I love the location of PT eatery A LOT better though. Closer to the freeway, lots of parking (including Tesla superchargers!), and other nearby food places if you somehow didn't eat enough at PT eatery. I always get the following items that NEVER disappoints: -Roasted Catfish (great for a big group of 6 or so people to share) so so good with the rice paper and all the veggies! I get sad when my husband says NO when there's only the two of us. Pro tip, it takes a bit to cook, so call it in about 30 mins prior so you can have it ready for your table. -Butter chicken wings. These can't be healthy for me but they are so flippin' good!!!! The wings are so crunchy with a little sweetness to them -Shrimp papaya salad (Goi Tom) - such a great helping with great flavors in a salad. I love the crispy Shrimp chips that give it a great crunch. Everything I've ordered here has always been great Vietnamese food. Amazing place for a delicious Vietnamese meal!! We saw this place multiple times and finally got to try it because we had to charge our car in that parking lot. This place is surprisingly delicious. Other than this place always taking a long time to seat the guests the food is amazing! Been here 2x and when arriving have to stand there for a while until someone acknowledges my presence. Same with the groups that came behind me just standing there. Once seated the ordering process is quick and food comes out in a timely manner. Their Pho is equally as good as my favorite place Pho Hoa on El Cajon blvd. Their broth isn't greasy, it has an awesome flavor which I can identify all of the individual ingredients and ample portions of beef. Located in the same plaza as Lolita, across the street from 99 ranch. Parking isn't too bad. I've heard mix reviews here from friends. No condiments on the tables, you have to ask for what you want: i.e. chili paste, chili oil, fish sauce, etc. This place is definitely a lot more newer and modern, even has young Americanized Asians taking orders and serving us. They do not serve the exact same foods as the original Phuong Trang on convoy and seem to run out of certain things towards the end of the night. We usually get the sweet & sour fish soup but they don't have that here. The 7 course beef isn't a package on the menu, but each beef can be ordered and sold separately. They still have their whole fried fish which is nice on certain occasions. Love the, make your own fried fish springs rolls and 7 course beef. We tried the vermicelli noodles, bun rieu, broken rice, and half fried chicken w/ fried rice. All the different types of meat we got was very well seasoned and very good tasting! The grilled pork Pattie's that came with the broken rice and vermicelli was were delicious. Service was a bit slow. Our waters were never refilled. Some other not so good things was the broken rice was over cooked (smooshy), bun rieu soup was bland, vermicelli noodles felt like they just came out of the fridge. The service here is really slow. With that being said that is my only knock on the place. The food is great. We got the chicken wings with all different sauces and it was great. PT eatery comes very recommended by a lot of people, so I decided to try it. We had the kung pao trio, the pho, and the egg rolls. I must say the egg rolls exceeded expectations and were a delight, they were very crispy and packed with flavor. The pho was also really good because the broth was seasoned to perfection, and the beef seemed to be good quality. They give you a lot of veggies for the broth and the pho experience was a good one. The kung pao on the other hand wasn't the best as the amount of protein that came with it was very minimal given the price of it, and it wasn't very flavorful. The service was good and the workers were kind. It was a nice atmosphere although the tables were a bit sticky. Overall a good experience especially with the pho. One thing I didn't like was that the hoisin sauces and siracha came in small packets rather than the bottles. However, I would potentially come back here, just for the pho. read more

PT Eatery is a great restaurant. We go there often for classic, Vietnamese food. They have great staff, namely Ruth and Estelle who run the floor. Our food always arrive promptly and is piping hot. Wow! This place was amazing! We were able to reserve table for a party of 20. Food and service were outstanding. We shared our food family style because the portions are pretty generous. I could eat this as a main dish and be happy. Short Rib Pho: Pho begins with the broth and theirs is amazing. Great flavor. Piping hot. I got the rare steak which is generally my staple but I tried some of the short rib and I have to write home about it. Yes, try it. super tender and great flavor. Wonderful. Pho Bahn Mi: First, their Bahn Mi by itself is excellent. Fresh crispy bread, tender pork, great ratio of veggies. But then... dip it in their amazing pho broth au jus style and BAM! Amazeballs! Love PT Eatery, this restaurant is owned by the same family as Phuong Trang on Convoy. They have many of the same menu items, but a truncated menu versus the Convoy location. One of my favorite Vietnamese restaurants in San Diego. Very fresh, clean and delicious. This location has ample parking, a couple tables outside. They do get popular on Friday and Saturday nights, with waits up to 30 to 45 minutes. Would suggest weeknights or going at off peak times (non weekends, at opening or early dinner at 5:30 pm). My favorite dishes: - Bun Rieu - nicely seasoned, comes with pork ribs to add more meat. There's a side dish of veggies that come along. If you're low carb, go without noodles and ask them for some extra veggies. - Noodles with Pork and Coconut Milk (Bun Tam Bi) - sounds odd, but an amazing Vietnamese dish that isn't often found in many restaurants. It's basically a vermicelli noodle bowl with meat./veggies and a savory/slightly sweet coconut milk dressing. Dressing comes on the side so you can go ahead and control how much you want. - Anything with their grilled bbq pork (Thit nuong). More so comes in a yummy savory patty! - Grilled Fish - this is super delicious, crispey/crunchy, comes with noodles, rice paper wrapper and veggies. Call ahead or expect to wait a longggg time because these are made fresh to order. - bo la lot (grapeleaf beef meatballs) - this is a key dish from 7 courses of beef. It's essentially a well seasoned beef meatball wrapped in grapeleaf. Served with veggies, and rice paper wrapper. You can eat it solo or wrap it up. - Pho Banh Mi Dip is worth a try. Wouldn't order it to go, you've got to eat it while it's hot in the restaurant. There are some other items on the menu like orange chicken, but likely NOT the star of the show. I like to slather sriracha hot sauce on each piece of meat as I eat pho tai, and I always add lots of sriracha and hoisin sauce to bun dishes like bun thit nuong and bun ga nuong. But I haven't ordered pho or bun dishes at PT Eatery since they stopped providing sriracha and hoisin sauce in squeeze bottles on the table -- a pandemic casualty. Both PT Eatery and its parent Phuong Trang (around the corner on Convoy) only provide little single-serving packets that you have to tear open like ketchup in a fast-food place. Messy, annoying, and cheap. So, since the pandemic, I've ordered things here that don't need those condiments but have been almost uniformly disappointed with what I've tried. I've been a number of times and have had good luck with only one thing on the menu, which I'll mention shortly. A few things that I've had (and can recall as I write this) include rieu crabmeat noodle soup (thin, weak flavor), coconut rice noodle bowl with pork (also thin, weak flavor), and kung pao beef (really bad in every way, although this is a Chinese, not a Vietnamese, dish). For whatever reasons I'd really like to like this place, but, like banging my head against the wall (or table), I keep trying different menu items here that turn out to be listless, bland, and uninteresting. Except for one, and that's their excellent "char-grilled shrimp salad". This is a delicious large salad with lots of flavor and texture, as well as a generous number of good-sized shrimp, all piled up on a plate in a cone-like shape -- nicely presented. This has been a reliable favorite of both my companion and me that is a real standout here. We do add a tiny bit of hot sauce from one or two of the packets that they provide to this one, but that's all it needs. If not for this dish, my rating for this place wouldn't rise above two stars. But the char-grilled shrimp salad is worth going out of one's way for. And we do. Service is highly variable. Sometimes you can wait for a very long time before someone finally appears near your table and notices that you're waiting to order, and other times that takes place pretty fast. Same for the time to get the food from the kitchen after ordering. Sometimes this is terribly slow and sometimes more reasonable or even fast. As in most Vietnamese restaurants, paying at the counter rather than at the table is the norm. Here, they'll bring a check to the table if you want, but you'll have to be patient and flag someone down. The restaurant itself is large, clean, and not unattractive. Prices are typical. read more

Nothing is as comforting as a steaming bowl of pho on a gloomy day. During my recent trip to San Diego, my friends and I stopped by PT Eatery for lunch. The restaurant has plenty of tables for large groups. Pho Tai (5/5)- Outstanding and authentic bowl of pho with rare beef. The broth was amazing on its own and was only better with a squeeze of lemon. Plenty of bean sprouts, jalapeño slices, basil, and lemon wedges were provided on the side so you could add as much or as little as you'd like. Garlic Butter Chicken Wings (4/5)- We ordered a batch of spicy wings and regular wings. The spicy wings were better but were only slightly spicy. The wings were crispy, flavorful, and topped with fried garlic. Note: The wings take some time to cook. I was disappointed that that they were out of egg rolls when we were here. San Diego has a lot of Pho options, so it's only fair to try every place at least once! PT Eatery is a huge location that has an expansive menu of Pho and other Vietnamese delicacies. This time I decided to try something different and get the Pho French Dip, which was a French baguette stuffed with meat, bean sprouts, cilantro, and hoisin sauce accompanied by a small bowl of the steaming Pho broth to dip into. I'd give this a 3.5/5 - it was filling and had a generous portion of meat, but there was too much hoisin which was overpowering the flavor. I think I'll stick with a traditional bowl of Pho instead. As far as Pho goes this place puts out a nice bowl of traditional, fresh, and flavorful yumminess. With the intent to try something different I chose the Pho Beef dip sandwich. The bread was fresh and on point, the broth hot and flavorful (although, I felt could have been a little saltier), but felt like the sandwich had a bit too many bean sprouts which tended to dominate the flavor palette. The beef, on the other hand was juicy, and the sweet sauce found at the meat level of the sandwich melded well with the broth. A hint of mint added flavor but was overshadowed by the bean sprouts as previously mentioned. I also ordered the spring rolls which, speak about fresh, was the star of the show. Rice paper wrap, fresh and sticky, mint, sprouts, shrimp, and other ingredients worked perfectly together and the peanut sauce just brings it all home. I'll be back, next time for the Pho. read more

They have THE BEST fried tofu!! It has a thick and super crispy, addictive coating. We've had it many times, since trying it for the first time a couple years ago. Just go with the regular Fried Salted Tofu and don't bother with the Lemongrass or Kung Pao. While they're flavorful, the addition of the sauces makes them not as crispy. The pho is also solid, as well as the wings and fried ribs. Service can be spotty, but I recently read an article in Eater, that Asian places with 3 stars are usually better and more authentic, and the reason they get 3 stars is because people are dissatisfied with the service. I would definitely have to agree with that in the case of the PT Eatery's service. But don't let that deter you! This is the kind of place you want to eat at again and again, even if it does take awhile for your server. read more

PT Eatery made me a great order of Bun with BBQ Chicken and a Couple Egg Rolls served over rice vermicelli and greens. The chicken was tender and delicious, not to mention that it had great color. The Vietnamese egg rolls were terrific. They were generously filled and quite crispy. The vermicelli was well prepared but it should of been served cooler than it was. I loved that they included a lot of good veggies and crushed peanuts with the meal. The fish sauce was mild and tasty.
