My parents generation was Phuong Trang which still exist until this day. While PT Eatery is my generation that's like the quick modern simplified version of Phuong Trang while keeping all the quality of foods the same. The menu is all in English with no Vietnamese translation. Traditional seven course beef is not offered at this eatery and neither were the fried fish or exotic dishes that you're used to at the original Phuong Trang. What to expect at PT Eatery are the basic categories like rice, vermicelli noodles, pho, vegetarian, meat, sandwiches, and appetizers. We got pho, vermicelli grilled pork with egg rolls, garlic butter ribs and garlic butter wings, wrapped grilled shrimp (banh hoi). My favorite were the garlic butter ribs because they were deep fried and the batter was crunchy delicious. The wings were the same fried battered but the ribs were 10x better because it was different. I normally get egg rolls as an appetizer but decided to get it with the vermicelli noodles along with char grilled pork. The pork was very tasty, it was thin flat rectangle shaped. The portion was huge and I only ate half. The grilled shrimp wrapped in lettuce looks familiar because it's the shrimp that you get at dim sum wrapped around a sugar cane. The banh hoi is like weaved vermicelli noodles. All the staff wore masks. No dine in available but the interior is being remodeled with new hand painted murals based on real life photos from the owner's visit to Vietnam. read more

We ended up ordering: -Garlic butter baby back ribs (comes with a side of rice) -Egg rolls (always a good choice!!) -Char-grilled pork vermicelli bowl Overall, they have some great choices, I would have to say that their ribs are not the best choice. I love this place strictly for the fact that they have one of my favorite dishes of all time, coconut rice noodle bowl: thick rice noodles topped with shredded lettuce, mint, bean sprouts, cucumbers, peanuts, your choice of protein, and served with coconut milk and vietnamese dipping sauce. I could eat this everyday! They have a fairly large menu and has your tradition pho, broken rice, and rice noodle dishes. Everything that I've eaten here is good. There's also ample parking and go early before rush hour lunch or dinner times so you don't have to wait long to be seated. This is the sister restaurant to Phuong Trang and both have really good options for Vietnamese food. We ordered at the counter first, and then grabbed a table outside. Our group shared the tenderloin with French bread, kalbi, chargrilled pork banh hoi, and rice paper eggrolls. Everything came out and once and looked as delicious as they tasted! One of my new favorite Vietnamese spots! We came here for a Lunar New Years dinner on a Friday night. It was packed but we made reservations. When we arrived, our table was already prepared for us. We ordered a catfish (we also reserved one when made the reservation). It was huge and came with a bunch of traditional sides such as rice paper, veggies plate, fish sauce, fermented fish paste sauce, and vermicelli noodles! It was a huge fish and tasted so good! I think it was about 90 dollars. We also ordered a lot of other dishes: noodles, fried rice, chicken wings, calamari, honey walnut shrimp. It was AMAZING and so so so good! We've been here a handful of times and we always get their beef tenderloin and baby back ribs. I swear I feel like I'm in a Pavlov experiment when I'm here because every time I hear that tender meat sizzling on that hot plate as the server brings it to my table, it's like music to my ears and my mouth starts watering. Date of most recent visit: September 22, 2020 My friends that work in Clairemont Mesa wanted to treat me for a belated birthday dinner last week. As I figured that by the time they got off work Convoy would be pretty packed (along with the parking), I decided to go somewhere I hadn't been to in a while - Phoung Trang's sister restaurant, PT Eatery. Basically, the restaurant doesn't have Phoung Trang's full menu, but rather the customer and staff favorites. On this visit, we had the following: - Garlic Wings ($13.95 for a 12-piece order): One of my favorite sides, PT Eatery's were nice and crispy with the right amount of garlic and chili seasonings. - Egg Rolls ($9.50 for a six piece order): Different from Filipino lumpia, Vietnamese egg rolls are filled with ground chicken, shredded carrots, jicama, glass noodles, & taro. They're served alongside lettuce and cilantro, which are used to wrap the egg roll in before dunking in the fish sauce. While I liked PT Eatery's version, they were also a bit overly fried. Extra Large Combo Pho ($10.50): This is my usual go-to pho order, as it's a large serving of broth with slices of brisket, steak, flank, tendon, and tripe alongside a lot of rice noodles and served with mint, lime, bean sprouts, and cilantro. While the soup was delicious, it felt like there wasn't as much beef or tripe with my order as I've previously had. Stir-Fried Meat & Seafood with Vegetables ($11.50): A hearty serving of pork, chicken, shrimp, fish, and imitation crab served with assorted vegetables and your choice of either rice noodles, egg noodles, crispy egg noodles, or rice in a garlic sauce (my friends chose the egg noodles - a good decision). One of my favorites here as well! Fish Filet with Thai Basil ($13.95): This dish is pretty self-explanatory; fried filet of sole pieces with Thai basil tossed with jalapeños and onion. Pretty good, but could've used a bit more fish. Garlic Butter Baby Back Ribs ($11.95): Now this one we've never had before... lightly battered and fried pork ribs with garlic butter, salt, and pepper. A little overcooked, but this was still delicious. We were lucky enough to get a table inside; seating is limited due to the pandemic, but it was still pretty clean and spacious Good food and a great time spent with some friends I haven't seen in a long time! I still want to try the fried calamari, banh mi, and 3 Color Dessert PT Eatery has... and seeing how parking is much easier here than at the Phoung Trang mothership, I'll be coming here more often! read more

Owned by the same people at Phuong Trang but there's a lot of different items on the menu. My friends claim it's not as good but it tastes the same to me. Because Phuong Trang wasn't open for dine-in, we opted for their other location to eat everything fresh. We ordered our food at the counter and they told us to sit at any available table. Egg rolls, spring rolls and butter garlic chicken wings: this is our usual order to share and it all tasted the same to me. The chicken wings were so crunchy and moist. The best dish we had. Came in to try this place as I love their main restaurant. Was so disappointed and annoyed without even having a chance to try their food. Walking in, you see a sign "wait to be seated." Not a big deal, we can wait. They were obviously busy and understaffed. One server was walking around scrambling to take care of customers and the other was just leisurely taking his time. We stood by the entrance in front of the sign where they could definitely see us. We stood there for 10 minutes. The girl server passed by us at like 5 times without even acknowledging us. I get you're busy, but since you literally passed by us 5 times and we're 3 feet away each time, could have at least said something like "I'll be right with you." I love Phuong Trang and just had to visit their sister restaurant, PT Eatery. Pretty disappointed. Service was terrible. No one ever checked on us. I had to flag someone down to seat us, take our order, get a refill, grab the check, etc. So just know if you need something, speak up. Came on a Friday night and it was pretty empty. My girlfriend ordered Pho and I ordered the Garlic Butter Wings and the Char-Grilled Chicken & Egg Rolls Vermicelli Bowl. What we didn't like is my girlfriend got her Pho 10 minutes before I got my Vermicelli Bowl so by the time I got mine, she was more than halfway done. I told her to eat because her Pho would get cold but no one likes eating while the other person is just sitting there. Also, we got our wings 10 minutes after I got my bowl. The wings is under the appetizers section so why would we get that last? We should've gotten that first. We asked for fish sauce but they forgot so there's that. The Vermicelli Bowl was pretty good. Only thing is the bowl is so small you can't mix anything because everything is just packed in there. I've never seen a vermicelli bowl so small before. The wings were good but again, it came out last even though its an appetizer. If you're going to come here, order by phone and to go because the service will ruin your dining experience. I won't be back. I would rather go back to Phuong Trang off Convoy. PT Eatery has a long way to go. read more

We came to PT Eatery as one time we went to their sister restaurant Phuong Trang and they were closed and they redirected us here. Since we enjoy Phuong Truong so much it made sense to try PT eatery as well. Feeling peckish I personally got appetizers that I could just eat as finger food - the deep fried pork ribs and the deep fried tofu. Both were just so crispy and great! The ribs were only slightly sweet like I like it and the tofu used a crispy rice flour it seems that I love rather than the only slightly crispy fried tofu you get elsewhere. Others in the group enjoyed their food as well and we all marveled at the huge beef patella that one in our group ordered as a side. For me I feel that the broth was pretty average while the other parts of the bowl was lacking. Noodles a little more firm and beef a lil below quality, but I'd say it was a pretty good price! OMG, this was without a doubt one of the best Pho I've ever had period! While in the neighborhood and trying to find a place to eat during this Covid-19 crisis I came across PT Eatery today. FYI, apparently they have two locations but only their Clairemont Mesa Blvd location is open. This was very confusing since I went to the wrong address in the first place but luckily they are only 1 mile apart. My food was ready by the time I got there and this is where the fun began. The Crispy Egg Rolls were hands down fresh and hot. It came with a ton of lettuce and basil. Wrapping them up and dipping them into the fish sauce was so delicious and tasty. I ate half of my order and moved on to the Pho. Let me tell you, between the soup container and the ingredients this order was huge and also very heavy. It almost ripped the plastic bag it came in and I had to support the bag so my containers would not fall onto the sidewalk. Once I opened the soup container I had to add little by little of the ingredients without having to worry about the soup overflowing. I loved everything from the broth to the chicken and the noodles. The bean sprouts, the jalapeno peppers and the other ingredients made this dish perfect and I enjoyed it tremendously. Everything was fresh and very tasty. This place is usually packed with patrons on the weekends, but the wait is not bad unless you come with a crowd. This is a sister shop to Phuong Trang, receiving some of their overflow patrons who don't want to wait in line over there. The menu is not the same but many of the most popular items can be found at both spots. This location has a more modern, decorated look and has more Asian fusion food like stir fries. Sadly, while the taste is up to par, the last few times I've eaten here I am so darn thirsty that I wonder if someone is being a little too heavy-handed with the MSG. read more

I really want to love this place but it has driven me away to seek out another Pho restaurant. I don't like giving low reviews but I'm just sharing my experience with you all. I have been a customer for about ten years or so before the new owner stepped in who purchased it and let me tell you, back in the day it was great! Okay, we all know how COVID-19 can be deadly and we all need to do our part to minimize the spread. COVID-19 is here to stay, is spiking and high right now in the summer as everyone is out and about. That being said, the other day with my kid son who loves the Pho "rare steak" soup, we sat down and the young lady brought us the menus and water. I looked down to grab the menu and seen..... well, just take a look at the attached pictures below. They speak for themselves. We didn't touch the menus as we knew already what to order. Look, the food is good not great as it was ten years ago from the previous owner but good. I personally will probably start looking for another spot for my Pho. As some of you might know, most of the pho places closed on Tuesday. We came to Phuong Trang on a Tuesday and it was saying closed. But they put on the door that PT Eatery was their other store and open for Tuesday and we can go there. So we went here for pho. The Pho here is also good but seems not as good and Phuong Trang's ( personally I think Phuong Trang's soup base tasted a little sweeter than PT Eatery's). The egg roll here is also just normal egg roll. But the parking here is much nicer. Plenty of space. So in summary, PT Eatery is good if you want Pho on a Tuesday. read more

Context: Came here on a Saturday for lunch around 1:10 p.m. for a table for two. Service: The service was good. When we arrived, we were seated right away. Our food took about 20 minutes to be served, which was not an issue. Food: We ordered Bun Bo Hue, which is Spicy Beef and Pork Noodle Soup. On the menu, it is called "Hue Spicy Noodle Soup." This soup was amazing! It was very rich in flavor, and adding more chili oil to the soup made the experience more pleasant. If you have not given this soup a try and you enjoy spicy foods, I highly recommend doing so! It's a good switch up from the classic pho from time to time. Pho is great! The broth is on point and the noodles are silky smooth. Not a fan of Pho places that serve cold clumped noodles. The Restaurant is usually busy but never an issue for 1-2 ppl. Service is typically prompt and friendly but has sadly been on the decline. Ambience is okay, the music selection is sad and the loud radio commercials suck! PT Eatery is located in the same plaza as Ethan Allen. It took over Pho T Cali. I believe it was opened by the owners of Phuong Trang which is located only a few miles away. The menu here would be more contemporary while still offering some of their trademark dishes. We ordered: Sizzling Beef Tenderloin w/Fried Rice: - The restaurant suggested this dish as they said the meat was comparable to filet mignon. The cubed tenderloin was served on a sizzling platter with raw onions and butter. The onions started to cook and render down in the delicious butter. The beef was medium rare but became more well done as it sat in platter. I'd recommend removing the beef from the platter if you prefer to eat more 'rare' done meat. Side Baguette $2: - Friend ordered a side of bread for his sizzling beef. I don't think they bake their own bread here at PT Eatery. But the version they serve comes out crispy and warm which tasted delicious with the tender beef. I'd probably make a mini sandwich out of this next time right (add some beef, pickled carrots/daikon, lettuce, rendered down buttered onions). Voila. House Special Broken Rice: - the generous plate came with rice, pickled carrots/daikon, chargrilled pork patty, pork skin, egg meatloaf, and ground shrimp wrapped in tofu. The tofu skin wasn't crispy. The skin more or less adhered to the shrimp paste so this item tasted more like 'shrimp cake' to me. It wasn't bad but I was looking forward to the crispiness of the tofu skin. My favorite item was the pork skin! It tasted like low carb porky noodles. Loved. Side of pho broth : - rice plates don't come with soup so I ordered a small bowl of pho (I think .75c). It came out piping hot and tasted nicely of beef/salt Vietnamese Traditional Beef Stew: - I only tried a taste. There were chunks of stewed beef and carrots. The broth was a bit too light for my taste. The order comes with the french baguette which, again, tasted so very good especially with a stew. Garlic butter chicken wings $7.95: - They only serve half dozen orders of chicken wings. It takes over 20+ min to make so make sure to order these wings right away. Our wings came out well after our main dishes. These wings are supposed to be identical to Phuong Trang. I frowned when I saw the lighter skin color fry on these PT Eatery wings. The version at their other location was much darker - or much more golden. BUT, the skin was crispy and crackling. Furthermore, the garlic butter still tasted unbelievably umami. I'm pretty sure it's from the MSG (monosodium glutamate) but it was well worth it for us. The salty, sweet, crispy, tender components of the wings make them one of the best. my blog has more detailed review and pics I enjoyed the meal and would probably come here over Phuong Trang as PT Eatery is more open and less crowded. The menu isn't as large but still offers a wide range of dishes. I felt the prices were fair as the portions were hearty.
