What does Amarillo have to offer in terms of upscale dining? I was visiting Amarillo for about a week to spend time with my girlfriend and her family in her hometown, and I wanted to treat her to a nice dinner. She suggested a few places, but she heavily emphasized Public House as the restaurant to take her to. We had a reservation at 7:15 pm on a Friday and arrived just a few minutes early. They were very busy and we had to wait an additional 15 minutes to get seated. The waitstaff was super apologetic, but it was also college graduation night for some, so it was simply very busy. We were seated in their main dining room, though the reservation had options for their lounge and their bar as well. Our waitress came by with a carafe of water and gave us their drink menu. For starters, I ordered a Blue Bumble Bee and my girlfriend ordered the Harvest Martini. It was very fruity and herbal. Their cocktails ranged between $11 and $15. They also had an extensive draft list available on Untappd and plenty of wine options. As an appetizer, my girlfriend really wanted their Fried Cheese Curds, which she described as amazing. They were served with ranch and a raspberry habanero jelly that was very good. The fruity sweetness hits first, with the habanero flavor coming in on the back end and sneaking up on you. The curds themselves were excellent. They were perfect to share for two, but I think they would be unsatisfying for more than three. We both ordered a side Caesar salad made with their house Caesar dressing, parmesan chips, croutons, and parmesan cheese. You can always taste a fresh salad and this was proof of that. I liked it a lot and ate the entire thing. For our main entrees, my girlfriend ordered the Lamb Lollipop Chops. They are listed as an appetizer, but the four lamb chops were filling enough for her. I ordered the special of the day, a Beef Wellington served with seasonal vegetables of chopped sweet potatoes and asparagus. The Wellington also came with mashed potatoes. It was recommended medium rare, which is how I ordered it. I thought it was really delicious. I am still thinking about how doughy and flavorful it was, especially with the prosciutto. Our waitress mentioned they had sold out of it every night for the past few nights. Both the Lamb Chops and the Beef Wellington were market price. Everyone acts gangster until those MKT prices turn into $45 for an entrée. I am usually the one ordering something cheaper than my girlfriend so I can jokingly say she is expensive, but when her entrée was $29 and mine was $45, I could only clown myself. All of this still came in under $180 before tip, and there were plenty of more affordable options on the menu. Two standard entrees, two salads, an appetizer, and two drinks could easily keep your bill under $100 before tip, which makes Public House approachable for a nice night out. If you thought we were done, you would be surprised. For dessert, we debated between their crème brûlée special with strawberries and their Ooey Gooey Butter Cake. When we asked our waitress, she immediately recommended the Ooey Gooey Butter Cake with no hesitation, so that is what we ordered. I had never had one before and was impressed by its flavor. It was served with plenty of whipped cream and reminded me of fried cheesecake in terms of texture. Side note, my girlfriend told me the ooey gooey part of its name refers to the type of butter cake and is not just a silly name, so I will continue to refer to it by its full name out of respect. We also ordered dessert cocktails, with both of us choosing the Kevin McAllister, which was described as an adult apple juice. It was made with a house made caramel infused vodka that was excellent. It truly lived up to the description and paired well with the dessert. I would definitely return to Public House the next time I am back in Amarillo. It was a fantastic dinner to share with someone I love. The staff were attentive and on point, and once we were seated everything moved efficiently despite the short wait. As we walked out of the restaurant, I took a picture of my beautiful girlfriend in front of the Public House sign. A couple asked if we wanted our picture taken. I said, "No, I just wanted to admire her for a moment." After a good meal with the one you love, that is sometimes all you need. RIYL: treating that someone special to a good meal in Amarillo, Texas

My husband and I were on a motorcycle road trip from Arizona to Arkansas. One of our stops was in Amarillo. I came across Public House on Yelp and wanted to give it a try for lunch. I'm glad that we did because not only did we have a great meal, we had a wonderful time. Corey was our bartender and server. He made great cocktails and made sure to were taken care of. My husband had the meat loaf and I had the avocado quinoa salad with seared ahi tuna with a glass of white wine which paired perfectly. We also had the shrimp cocktail for an appetizer. We both enjoyed our meals, drinks and time at Public House so much we returned for another round on our way back home. We were happy to have Corey wait on us again. We had just as great of a time the second time around if not more.

See update below. Started amazing. Smelled good. Live music was wonderful. Wonderful cocktails. Great atmosphere. Mushrooms were amazing. Caesar salad so authentic and fantastic! Then the rib eye with risotto. $79 for a tough tasteless steak. Temperature was perfect but it was not edible. The risotto was tight and not creamy and delectable. It was not edible. Told the waitress. Asked if I wanted to talk to manager and I said she could. Bottom line. I was extremely disappointed at the end of the day. Because of the main course I would never go back. So sad since it had such a wonderful beginning. At the end the waitress just said sorry. We paid we tipped and we shall not return. Nor will the people we brought. Update! The owner later reached out and showed genuine concern regarding what happened. As a result the owner asked questions and made the situation right. For me this shows care and I think diligence towards constant improvement. That is hopeful and if an opportunity arises I will go back and see how they did.

Very nice place. Love the layout and the attractive bar. Service was excellent, pleasant and attentive. Good range of wines by the glass. Caesar salad had some less than green romaine pieces and there were way too many croutons. I substituted the Caesar dressing for their delicious blue cheese. Quinoa salad & dressing with salmon were delicious. Crab cake was pretty good. Would return if passing through

The Public House is our go to in Amarillo. We ALWAYS look forward to a meal here and they've never disappointed. Our server knew the bar well so we wound up with exactly what we wanted to relax from a longish drive. She was prompt, present and attentive. We might be stuck in a rut but it's a delicious rut. My wife loves the simplicity but elegance of Grande's Shrimp Cocktail. It's all she needs! And the chilled shrimp are large, perfectly cooked then chilled. I love the 'exotic' nature of the PH Meatloaf! Beef, pork and duck roasted with a mushroom Demi-glacé. GREAT flavor! Served with perfectly prepped sliced veggies. Yes they have great aged steaks and fish but the flavors of that meatloaf keep us coming back. Well done!!!

Fun visit to Public House restaurant. Good front desk folks. The restaurant was booked, and the staff said to hang out for a few minutes to see what might come up. They were kind and tried to get us in as soon as possible. Within about 15 minutes, we went from a high top table in the bar area to a regular dining table in the main dining room. We had a delicious dinner and pleasant evening.

Loved our lunch date here! My sister and I stopped here after a trip to Amarillo! We had the drunken mushrooms, the crab cakes, the Cheesey Shrimp and grits to share, and a house salad. They plated our grits on two separate plates for us when they brought it out! The flavors were delicious and the portions, since we shared, were perfect. The only negative was the drunken mushrooms. The flavor was button mushrooms boiled in Cabernet wine (which is what it is). There was no other flavor, nothing to complement, nothing to split the flavor. Everything else was delicious and the service and atmosphere was PERFECT! We will be back!

This is definitely the best restaurant experience I've had in Amarillo. I loved their drink selection and the drink I ordered. I had the mac n cheese - it was the best! Went to public house on a whim last week, amazing! Had the crab wontons, ham and Brie sandwich, house salad with goat cheese, and potato soup. Everything was brought out quick and fresh. Delicious. The best part was their ooey gooey butter cake, so much so that my mother and I went back the next day just for that dessert. Service was amazing. Let's keep this place afloat during this time, I would hate to see it go. read more

My lady's favorite spot , little upscale dining in Amarillo. I only get one thing there... the meatloaf(pork,beef,duck) , don't knock me for it. It was the first thing I tried and I really enjoyed it so I stuck with it. She enjoys the filet w/her choice of veggies ... appetizers were good .. (crab cakes,bacon wrapped jalapeños). Service can be a hit and miss ... but all in all we enjoyed our visit. Large wine selection read more

Public House is a welcome high end eating establishment. Mac & Cheese is great starter (steak & jalapeño + vegi my fav.) Had lunch salmon several times. Their scallops are fresh & done just right. Deserts are way good. Apple pie & creme brulee lead the list. They are still getting up to speed on their new crew - the servers have always been polite & honest when they don't know something. They alway promptly found out. The bar os very inviting so get there early & have some drinks! read more

An upscale restaurant that takes steak to the next level in quality and portion. The beer and wine list is enormous. The service is polished. Nonetheless jeans and a ball cap fit in perfectly. If you're in Amarillo looking for an authentic Texas steak dinner, choose Public House over the chains. read more

We loved it! The lounge area is wonderful, with low key music, great selection of spirits, and enjoy the small plates selection. Service was not real fast, but they were friendly and we weren't in a hurry. Just went for appetizers and desert. The Creme Brûlée was sublime. read more

If this restaurant is not in the top 40 in Amarillo, then I sure missed out on 39 good restaurant experiences. Sorry folks but there's no way there are 39 better restaurants in this town. No way. This is like an upscale bistro you'd find in one of the country's 30 largest cities. Craft beers, good whiskey selection. You can tell this is the place where the young professionals and those with $ in Amarillo are going. If you want to avoid chain food and you've had your fill of Tex-Mex and BBQ, then check out Public House. read more

Food is amazing, the Manager "James" is very unprofessional. He treats his fellow workers with NO respect In front of guests.. I don't see how whoever owns this place doesn't have someone more qualified as a manager. If you don't mind belittling of staff it's a great place.. Otherwise, I rather go to a high quality place to eat with a more professional staff (Manager.) read more

This place lives up to the reviews! We were traveling through on way back to Houston so I took to YELP to find a place for lunch. Had a salad with chicken and goat cheese and a bowl of prime rib and mushroom soup. Both were perfect! The server was quick and efficient with taking our order and the food came out at the right temperature. My husband had a steak salad and enjoyed every bite. We will come back and try dinner when we come thru next time. read more

Sultry atmosphere, but that is where the good stops. Extremely slow service, and if you don't have a reservation they pretty much don't seat you in order of arrival. Disappointed with the staff, need better training on dishes. read more

What a great little gem of a restaurant. My 1st time to eat there was Valentines Day. They only offered 1 menu with 4 courses and 3 options per course. VERY pricey and we almoat walked out. we paid $186.00 for 2 people and we drank water so that price was for the meal only. With that said, the food was cooked to perfection. it was served with great care and obvious attention to detail. Ambiance of the resteraunt had a feel of classy taste. most people were dressed nice but a few stragglers dressed very casual, jeans and t-shirt. I would like to back to try their regular menu, but because of the price it, I'll wait until a special occasion. read more

I just had dinner with my wife at Public House. Food was good but one item was ridiculously expensive. I had the $9 avocado quinoa salad and two grilled prawns. I don't want to be mean here but the prawns were $20 apiece. They were touted to be near the size of lobster tails but were really about the size of extra large shrimp. So while the food was good, the two large shrimp were not worth $40. Enough said. read more

My husband and I visited this evening for our anniversary. First time here, looking forward to it. Made a reservation but it looked like that was unecessary, only one or two other tables appeared to be occupied. We were seated next to one of the occupied tables, awkwardly close to the only other people around. Oh well. They offered us a wine and cocktail menu but do not serve beer. Being named "Public House" we rather expected beer. We had merlot. Very expensive $10 glass of wine, filled very low, and tasted like a $10 bottle. Which was fine, i liked it, it was just overpriced. Ordered a tapas appetizer and our selections. Received no appetizer. Waitress, an older woman, forgot completely. I asked for a cocktail recommendation, she said, "they're all good." I did not order a cocktail. My husband ordered the elk dish. Small portion, very pricey, tasted good, potatoes were cold. My dinner was the Pistachio encrusted sea bass. I didn't see or taste pistachio but it was delicious. I noticed most of the menu items read "with vegetable and quinoa or wild rice". Look, that's fine, but I've never been to a restaurant this pricey serving the same sides on nearly every dish. To be honest, this place really ruined our evening but I don't want to be too much of a debbie downer so three stars. I can overlook a lot but negative surprises everywhere will keep me from wanting to spend money here again. If you want repeat customers, simply treat them well and it will make up entirely for a forgotten appetizer or a bit of priciness or cold potatoes. read more

Marit remembered us from our previous visit and remembered our wine preferences. The Reuben sandwich was so good that I ordered it again on our second visit. The meatloaf is unique: ground beef, pork, and duck. I love the toasted Parmesan chips that add a delightful flavor and texture to the Caesar salad. read more

I eat here all the time! I love the potato soup, fish of the day, elk, pork chops!! I would never order pork at a restaurant - but amazing!! The flourless chocolate cake is so so good! I usually sit in the bar - service can be slow but if you tell them you're in a hurry they'll accommodate! I once went in for lunch and said I was in a hurry and I was back in my car in about 30 minutes. Also - the bartenders share tips - so they can all take care of you! read more

Wildly inconsistent. My first meal here was great but most recently, on 8/27, I was served the worst salmon I have had in a restaurant in years. Burnt to a crisp. I can't imagine how the cook let it go, much less how the server, a sharp young man, let it get past him. The side was borderline at best. Just a terrible meal. Dropped $130 for three of us, with only one having anything to drink. That won't happen any time soon. Next time, I'll go for the fish at some chain on the interstate and pocket the difference. read more

This is my second time giving this place a shot for Sunday brunch. Unfortunately, I was met with the same result--unreasonably slow, poor service. We had to wait 30 minutes for a table, which would have been understandable had the restaurant been at capacity. However, approximately 25% of the tables in the restaurant were empty. How does this happen at noon during Sunday brunch? Quite the head scratcher. Anyway, our waitress showed up every now and then to provide service. My plates were brought out at different times. I hate to sound like an ass, but these are simple, little things that can make a huge difference in the service industry. Managerial attention would do wonders for this place. Hell, the food is pretty good, but it doesn't make up for the frustrations in customer service. I don't anticipate going back anytime soon. read more

We went to the Public House last night with friends because we enjoy their food and atmosphere. Well, we did not have a good experience this time! We sat in the bar area because we had not made a reservation. Evidently, most of the people in there did the same because the bar was full and the restaurant was empty. After another couple arrived we ordered our drinks and got ours fairly quickly. I ordered a blueberry drink and was brought a bitter raspberry drink. It tasted horrible so I sent it back. I have never done that before. When our waitress finally came around again we were brought one dinner menu for a table of 4 people. We could not get our waitress to return to take our dinner order. Our table finally called her over and said we were ready to place our order. The waitress actually said, "You will have to wait because I'm too busy right now to take your order." Our table should have gotten up right then and left but we didn't. After a long wait, she did finally come back and took our order. When our table finally got our food it was very good but last nights service was not! I will try Public House again but if the service is this bad and the wait staff is this rude again, I will not return. read more

Public House is one of the best spots in Amarillo! Liberty was a kick-ass server. The food and drinks are reasonably priced and delicious! Also, Madi, and Cheyenne are THE BEST MIXOLOGIST I have encountered yet in Amarillo! They mean business- If you want a great drink made with care- this is the place. Hamburger so juicy I nearly had to wipe up the elbows...my husband's ham and Brie was perfect. Both sandwiches came with a tasty and well made generous salad... Total bill: $25. Too much for sandwiches? I think not. We left quite full and quite happy:) Too sleepy to drive?? There are -count em - three truly stop-worthy coffee places within a block! Public House is my favorite restaurant in Amarillo. The atmosphere is worth visiting alone, but it doesn't stop there. There custom made drinks and wine list compliment there upscale menu perfectly. I have also received the best service from th extremely knowledgeable and friendly staff. read more

Great wine selection if you're in for a drink. A cocktail cart is never a miss. Had the specials for the filet and the sea bass, very well done. The dessert menu was provided afterwards and had great options including the baked apple pie which we had. Overall cool spot, worth a visit if you're in town a want a trendy spot. What a great find! Stopped off at Amarillo on our roadtrip from LA to Dallas and ended up here. Food was delicious -- had the tortilla soup and the grilled chicken entree -- our server was super attentive, and the ambiance was unexpectedly cool. Not to sound pretentious, but this place could definitely hold its own in LA! read more

Went with friends. Had a reservation. Seating was immediate even after requesting a quiet table. Sever Allen was amazing even though it was his first night at Public House. We ordered a variety of foods and everything looked and tasted amazing. The manager checked in on us frequently. Despite some critical reviews we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Including the ambience of the room. Despite the price we would highly recommend to our friends. read more

Both were from the lunch menu so the portions were appropriate for the time of day. Our salads were nicely sized, fresh and a perfect companion to the main course. We were served rolls with the salads. By the way my wife cleaned them up I presume they were pretty good! The CFS was tender, well-seasoned and covered in a nicely flavored gravy. It included two slices of buttered white toast as well. Very Texas! The cheesy grits were a nice side as there was just the right amount of cheese to grits ratio. My wife's smoked ribeye looked good but she said it lacked a bit on flavor. She split the roasted corn with me and it was just about perfect. The service was attentive but not intrusive and overall I really liked the vibe. It was lively but not Texas Roadhouse lively. You could have a discussion without yelling. Music level was reasonable. Of course, it might be different packed with patrons on a Friday night. I give this place a strong 7 out of 10. If I'm ever back in Amarillo I'll definitely come back and try a dinner steak and other options. Very angry and upset after the experience we had today at the new restaurant in Amarillo called Public House. #1. They must think they are something special. Hostess was aloof and dismissive as I stood there waiting to request a table for us. #2. They must be short staffed. Many tables sat empty, yet it was 30 minutes from my request for a table before we were offered one. #3. They have no respect for their customers. They took us to a table for four, set for five, and had the seat for my nephew who is in a wheelchair on the corner of the table. #4. The staff have not been trained. They said that was the biggest table available when in fact there were multiple four tops available that could have been pushed together. #5. The staff is not empowered. They could not solve the challenge or think on their feet. #6. When I asked the hostess who assigned the table, she said it was "someone else". #7. When my sister was speaking to the manager, the hostess stood there rolling her eyes. I had to walk up and speak to the manager about the inappropriateness of this when one of our party pointed it out to us. #8. They do not have easy access for wheelchairs. The door is too narrow to open alone and I had to unbolt the second door to first get in and then to get out. The old Santa Fe building has been a bust for the restaurants that have come and gone since Santa Fe moved on. I believe, and I hope, that this restaurant will soon go bust too. They do not deserve the business of anyone and with their arrogant attitude, I hope everyone will not go back. We walked out without dining and then went to the new 575 over on Hillside. We had a fantastic experience and great food. 575 has the formula for success and with that, I wish them all the success in the world. Shame on you Public House. You should be embarrassed by your behavior today! read more

We were in Amarillo for a weekend because of a family funeral, and had read good things about this place. We arrived for Sunday brunch to find the hostess stand unmanned. Turns out she was helping a waiter, which is fine but a "Please wait to be seated sign" would be nice for restaurant customers, as other people were entering and going directly to the bar area. We weren't even sure there was a hostess. After a few minutes, we were told there would be a 20-minute wait for a table. But there were clean, empty tables in plain sight, and there wasn't a line. We ended up at the Texas Firehouse Sports Bar & Grill, across the parking lot. Someone greeted us right away and it has big and varied food and drink menus. It wasn't loud, either, like sports bars can sometimes be. The food was good and reasonably priced, portions large, and the service was good.
