What does Amarillo have to offer in terms of upscale dining? I was visiting Amarillo for about a week to spend time with my girlfriend and her family in her hometown, and I wanted to treat her to a nice dinner. She suggested a few places, but she heavily emphasized Public House as the restaurant to take her to. We had a reservation at 7:15 pm on a Friday and arrived just a few minutes early. They were very busy and we had to wait an additional 15 minutes to get seated. The waitstaff was super apologetic, but it was also college graduation night for some, so it was simply very busy. We were seated in their main dining room, though the reservation had options for their lounge and their bar as well. Our waitress came by with a carafe of water and gave us their drink menu. For starters, I ordered a Blue Bumble Bee and my girlfriend ordered the Harvest Martini. It was very fruity and herbal. Their cocktails ranged between $11 and $15. They also had an extensive draft list available on Untappd and plenty of wine options. As an appetizer, my girlfriend really wanted their Fried Cheese Curds, which she described as amazing. They were served with ranch and a raspberry habanero jelly that was very good. The fruity sweetness hits first, with the habanero flavor coming in on the back end and sneaking up on you. The curds themselves were excellent. They were perfect to share for two, but I think they would be unsatisfying for more than three. We both ordered a side Caesar salad made with their house Caesar dressing, parmesan chips, croutons, and parmesan cheese. You can always taste a fresh salad and this was proof of that. I liked it a lot and ate the entire thing. For our main entrees, my girlfriend ordered the Lamb Lollipop Chops. They are listed as an appetizer, but the four lamb chops were filling enough for her. I ordered the special of the day, a Beef Wellington served with seasonal vegetables of chopped sweet potatoes and asparagus. The Wellington also came with mashed potatoes. It was recommended medium rare, which is how I ordered it. I thought it was really delicious. I am still thinking about how doughy and flavorful it was, especially with the prosciutto. Our waitress mentioned they had sold out of it every night for the past few nights. Both the Lamb Chops and the Beef Wellington were market price. Everyone acts gangster until those MKT prices turn into $45 for an entrée. I am usually the one ordering something cheaper than my girlfriend so I can jokingly say she is expensive, but when her entrée was $29 and mine was $45, I could only clown myself. All of this still came in under $180 before tip, and there were plenty of more affordable options on the menu. Two standard entrees, two salads, an appetizer, and two drinks could easily keep your bill under $100 before tip, which makes Public House approachable for a nice night out. If you thought we were done, you would be surprised. For dessert, we debated between their crème brûlée special with strawberries and their Ooey Gooey Butter Cake. When we asked our waitress, she immediately recommended the Ooey Gooey Butter Cake with no hesitation, so that is what we ordered. I had never had one before and was impressed by its flavor. It was served with plenty of whipped cream and reminded me of fried cheesecake in terms of texture. Side note, my girlfriend told me the ooey gooey part of its name refers to the type of butter cake and is not just a silly name, so I will continue to refer to it by its full name out of respect. We also ordered dessert cocktails, with both of us choosing the Kevin McAllister, which was described as an adult apple juice. It was made with a house made caramel infused vodka that was excellent. It truly lived up to the description and paired well with the dessert. I would definitely return to Public House the next time I am back in Amarillo. It was a fantastic dinner to share with someone I love. The staff were attentive and on point, and once we were seated everything moved efficiently despite the short wait. As we walked out of the restaurant, I took a picture of my beautiful girlfriend in front of the Public House sign. A couple asked if we wanted our picture taken. I said, "No, I just wanted to admire her for a moment." After a good meal with the one you love, that is sometimes all you need. RIYL: treating that someone special to a good meal in Amarillo, Texas

My husband and I were on a motorcycle road trip from Arizona to Arkansas. One of our stops was in Amarillo. I came across Public House on Yelp and wanted to give it a try for lunch. I'm glad that we did because not only did we have a great meal, we had a wonderful time. Corey was our bartender and server. He made great cocktails and made sure to were taken care of. My husband had the meat loaf and I had the avocado quinoa salad with seared ahi tuna with a glass of white wine which paired perfectly. We also had the shrimp cocktail for an appetizer. We both enjoyed our meals, drinks and time at Public House so much we returned for another round on our way back home. We were happy to have Corey wait on us again. We had just as great of a time the second time around if not more.

Then the rib eye with risotto. $79 for a tough tasteless steak. Temperature was perfect but it was not edible. The risotto was tight and not creamy and delectable. It was not edible. Told the waitress. Asked if I wanted to talk to manager and I said she could. Bottom line. I was extremely disappointed at the end of the day. Because of the main course I would never go back. So sad since it had such a wonderful beginning. At the end the waitress just said sorry. We paid we tipped and we shall not return. Nor will the people we brought. Update! The owner later reached out and showed genuine concern regarding what happened. As a result the owner asked questions and made the situation right. For me this shows care and I think diligence towards constant improvement. That is hopeful and if an opportunity arises I will go back and see how they did.

Very nice place. Love the layout and the attractive bar. Service was excellent, pleasant and attentive. Good range of wines by the glass. Caesar salad had some less than green romaine pieces and there were way too many croutons. I substituted the Caesar dressing for their delicious blue cheese. The Public House is our go to in Amarillo. We ALWAYS look forward to a meal here and they've never disappointed. Our server knew the bar well so we wound up with exactly what we wanted to relax from a longish drive. She was prompt, present and attentive. We might be stuck in a rut but it's a delicious rut. My wife loves the simplicity but elegance of Grande's Shrimp Cocktail. It's all she needs! And the chilled shrimp are large, perfectly cooked then chilled. I love the 'exotic' nature of the PH Meatloaf! Beef, pork and duck roasted with a mushroom Demi-glacé. GREAT flavor! Served with perfectly prepped sliced veggies. Yes they have great aged steaks and fish but the flavors of that meatloaf keep us coming back. Well done!!!

Fun visit to Public House restaurant. Good front desk folks. The restaurant was booked, and the staff said to hang out for a few minutes to see what might come up. They were kind and tried to get us in as soon as possible. Within about 15 minutes, we went from a high top table in the bar area to a regular dining table in the main dining room. We had a delicious dinner and pleasant evening.

Loved our lunch date here! My sister and I stopped here after a trip to Amarillo! We had the drunken mushrooms, the crab cakes, the Cheesey Shrimp and grits to share, and a house salad. They plated our grits on two separate plates for us when they brought it out! The flavors were delicious and the portions, since we shared, were perfect. The only negative was the drunken mushrooms. The flavor was button mushrooms boiled in Cabernet wine (which is what it is). There was no other flavor, nothing to complement, nothing to split the flavor. Everything else was delicious and the service and atmosphere was PERFECT! We will be back!

An upscale restaurant for Amarillo with dishes to accommodate everyone from gourmet burgers, superb filets and the beast seafood I've had in Amarillo (lobster sliders, shrimp & grits, salmon). Great drink menu. One of the top 2 or 3 high end restaurants in Amarillo. We have never had bad service. If country cooking $5.99 chicken fried steak with all you can eat salad bar is what you want this is NOT your place. The food is more refined and therefore costs more. Good restaurants need reservations to maximize your service, so call ahead and you won't be disappointed. read more

I went for the first time last night 6/13/16. We started with the popcorn rock shrimp, it's was a decent starter. For my main I ordered the seared fluke special. Was very disappointing. First they forgot the crab that was listed in the menu discription, which should of been on top of the fluke, being the first thing seen. The fluke was over cooked & they put the burnt side down trying to hide their failure. The green beans were under cooked, needed to be blanched longer. The quinoa was over cooked, was mush. Whole meal was disappointing. As this was my first experience I doubt I'll be back for another lack luster meal. I loved the Public House. The restaurant had a very welcoming feel. The bar area was cozy, while the restaurant was more industrial with polished concrete floors and tall ceilings. They have a very nice cocktail menu. I started with a beer from Big Bend Brewing. My brother had a cocktail with Jameson in a smoked rosemary glass. I had a sip and it was great. I asked about an old fashioned and the waiter Chris, said that he makes the best in all of Texas. So, I made an order and he he delivered. Meanwhile we ordered the lamb lollipops. They were so delicious, with a very nice glaze. My brother ordered the pork chop and he offered me a bite. This was a thick, juicy, porky delight, grilled to perfection. I had the coffee rubbed filet with the butternut squash risotto. It was cooked to a perfect temperature between medium rare and medium. My only complaint was that the sauce was a little too sweet for my taste. Our food waiter, Moe, checked on us often. Sadly I had to skip dessert, but did have a very nice 12 year old Glenmorangie Scotch. I come to Amarillo often and will return to this fantastic restaurant. read more

I came through Amarillo on my way to Colorado last week and was lucky enough to stumble upon this gem. Not only did I have one of the best meals of my life, but the spectacular bartender, Rich, offered me a personal scotch, some old favorites, and some new, but the variety was incomparable. The service at Public House was phenomenal, Rich and his staff made me feel at home after I had been on the road too long. I would advise anyone passing through Amarillo, or lucky enough to live near this place, to visit. read more

The food is amazing! You will not be disappointed. The Lobster Sliders are my favorite appetizer but the Lollipop Lamb is a very close second. The hamburgers are fabulous! I also love the Roasted Chicken. Every meal, appetizer and glass of wine has been the absolute best in town. read more

My spouse and I ate at the "PUBLIC HOUSE AMARILLO" last evening. First, let me say that our server Emma was absolutely great! The food was wonderful. The Menu is very diverse. Beer and wine selection is very good and a big plus is the whiskey menu. I highly recommend this restaurant. It can be a bit pricey, but the service by the Wait Staff is Impeccable! With that out of the way..... First impressions can be a killer. Upon walking in the door, the hostess asked us if we had a reservation. Normally this would not have been off-putting, but she was beyond rude when we explained that we did not. She told us that reservations are "required" on Friday and Saturday nights, but if we were willing to wait in the "Lounge" for 15 or 20 minutes, she "may be able find a table" for us. Now here is my issue with her attitude.... A 15 minute wait? on a Friday night? and a very comfortable lounge area with a great beer, wine and whiskey selection? That is a definite YES!!! Having the snobbish attitude, when a patron does not have a reservation? Well, that is not good. One other thing, the hostess? After the snobbery we encountered, well I guess that I paid attention to her. It seems that part of her job is to set tables and help prep the restaurant for the next day. As she was setting the table across from ours, she dropped a fork or two on the floor, I thought she would just take them and put them in the dirties. NOPE!!!! This little hostess picked the fork(s) up off the floor then actually used it to set the table. A great waiter came by and very quickly rectified the situation by pulling all of the forks off the table. SERIOUSLY... If you want a nice night out with a very diverse menu and GREAT Wait Staff, Go to the Public House Amarillo, but make a reservation!!! read more

We took the family to eat out on 12/23/2015. We had a waitress that was new. The service was horrible. She would only check on the table after about 15 minutes. We ordered salads before the entree and they did not come out until after the entree. Each entree was under cooked. We had to send the salmon back because it was cold and uncooked. I ordered my steak medium and it was rare. My wife ordered the chicken fried steak and the outside was crispy but the meat was still bloody. There was no visible management on duty to try and speak with someone. Overall a HUGE disappointment. When you spend that type of money you expect a much more pleasing outcome. We have eaten here 4-5 times before tonight, but the experience was so horrible we don't plan on ever returning. read more

We went on Wednesday evening. There was a "5 to 10 minute" wait though there were obviously empty tables. We waited at the bar. We were seated. The room is pleasantly set up and decorated. The service was simply awful. Our original server, Merit, was informative. That was about it. Our salads were puny and warm. She never came back to ask how we were doing. Salad plates removed by someone else. No food for 30 plus minutes. Then inquired. Food brought out incorrectly prepared. I asked for no cheese but got cheese and no mustard. Food was room temperature ,not hot. Food was however tasty. Should not have to wait almost an hour for two sandwiches after we are seated. To bad so disorganized. Ultimately merit brought us check though we had to ask for it to get out of there. Debatable if we would ever go back. read more

We made a reservation for 9 the day of for our company Christmas party. We got seated immediately even though we were early. They assigned two waitresses to us which i found thoughtful on their part. We took forever to order so two other large tables got their orders in first, which pushed our food back a while. we waited about an hour for our food but atmosphere was fun and we didn't mind. Only thing was it was a little warm in there (probably because we were drinking) but it would of been nice if the water had ice. In fact I had the waitress bring us some. the food was amazing and everyone food was hot and perfectly cooked. I had the seared Elk (medium) and it was fantastic, not gamey at all. read more

My husband and I recently went to the Public House to celebrate a late Valentine's Day as well as our Anniversary of 20 years. While I have to say the food was excellent, the service was definitely NOT!! Our server Jen greeted us and took our drink and appetizer order. Our appetizer was delivered, but still no cocktails. When our server came over and asked if we were ready to order I asked if we could have our drinks and she said, ummmm sure, but are you ready to order??? Wow!! So I have a few questions about the market price of a couple of items, and she promptly picks up the special menu to show me that they are listed there. I have worked in the hospitality industry for over 20 years as a manager, server, bartender, even line cook, and I know that this should NEVER HAPPEN!! I really wanted to come back and try your brunch, but unfortunately we feek like our experience was not worth the money that we spent. read more

Both desserts crème brûlée and chocolate cake were the perfect and paired well with 30 year old tawny port. We travel to Texas quarterly and will definitely make this a stop along the way. The menu comes from Toscana Italian restaurant upstairs, and we enjoyed every dish. For appetizers, we had the spinach artichoke dip and pretzel bites--very creamy, and the pretzel bites were warm and delicious. We also tried two salads: the BLT Wedge Salad and the Shaved Brussels Sprout Parmesan Salad. Both were hearty and very filling. We finished with the chocolate pistachio cake, which was a delightful dessert. Happy Hour: Their website advertises $6 liquor Monday through Friday from 5-7 PM. However, the bartender didn't seem to honor it, saying happy hour is upstairs--though that's not what the website states. He did make it right by charging only for two drinks, which equaled the price of the three drinks that should have been on happy hour. Hopefully they begin honoring the posted happy hour pricing. Overall, this was an excellent experience, and I look forward to returning. Evelyn, our server, was very attentive and kind throughout our visit.

Very angry and upset after the experience we had today at the new restaurant in Amarillo called Public House. #1. They must think they are something special. Hostess was aloof and dismissive as I stood there waiting to request a table for us. #2. They must be short staffed. Many tables sat empty, yet it was 30 minutes from my request for a table before we were offered one. #3. They have no respect for their customers. They took us to a table for four, set for five, and had the seat for my nephew who is in a wheelchair on the corner of the table. #4. The staff have not been trained. They said that was the biggest table available when in fact there were multiple four tops available that could have been pushed together. #5. The staff is not empowered. They could not solve the challenge or think on their feet. #6. When I asked the hostess who assigned the table, she said it was "someone else". #7. When my sister was speaking to the manager, the hostess stood there rolling her eyes. I had to walk up and speak to the manager about the inappropriateness of this when one of our party pointed it out to us. #8. They do not have easy access for wheelchairs. The door is too narrow to open alone and I had to unbolt the second door to first get in and then to get out. The old Santa Fe building has been a bust for the restaurants that have come and gone since Santa Fe moved on. I believe, and I hope, that this restaurant will soon go bust too. They do not deserve the business of anyone and with their arrogant attitude, I hope everyone will not go back. We walked out without dining and then went to the new 575 over on Hillside. We had a fantastic experience and great food. 575 has the formula for success and with that, I wish them all the success in the world. Shame on you Public House. We were in Amarillo for a weekend because of a family funeral, and had read good things about this place. We arrived for Sunday brunch to find the hostess stand unmanned. Turns out she was helping a waiter, which is fine but a "Please wait to be seated sign" would be nice for restaurant customers, as other people were entering and going directly to the bar area. We weren't even sure there was a hostess. After a few minutes, we were told there would be a 20-minute wait for a table. But there were clean, empty tables in plain sight, and there wasn't a line. We ended up at the Texas Firehouse Sports Bar & Grill, across the parking lot. Someone greeted us right away and it has big and varied food and drink menus. It wasn't loud, either, like sports bars can sometimes be. The food was good and reasonably priced, portions large, and the service was good.
