At this point if I could give negative stars I would!!! We have had storage here for several years. Before you rent here you should realize several things 1: your rent will go up significantly each year. Unfortunately even if it would be cheaper to go somewhere else for storage you stay because you figure that's easier than moving all of your stuff. I probably could have just added a room onto my house for the price i paid for storage here. 2: There are never enough carts and the ones they do have are broken and crappy. AND the worst thing is, we moved all of our stuff out this weekend since it was the end of the month. The unit was completely emptied out over the weekend. I called on Monday the 31st and asked how to cancel. I was asked if it was emptied and unlocked. I said it was emptied but my husband did not know he needed to take the lock off and I would do it. I was not told it had to be done before closing that day. I worked until 9pm and was not able to come and unlock it and leave the lock and keys until this morning at approximately 6:30 am. I received a call from Public Storage this morning saying since it is the 1st of the month I will have to pay an entire months worth of rent since I had not taken the lock off and returned the keys yesterday AND had I given them a heads up this would not have happened! I did call yesterday!! Charging people a whole months worth of rent for bringing the keys back on the 1st is ridiculous and very poor business practice! What ever happened to pro rating, you don't charge people a full months rent when they move in on the 10th or 15th, you pro rate it. I would be happy to pay for 1 days rent on the unit but asking me to pay an entire months rent on an empty unit when the keys were returned on the 1st is RIDICULOUS!!!! Right after, I also received a phone call & I confirmed that I will stop by later to view the unit. As promised, I stopped by later in the day, only to find out they rented out the unit to someone else. Also, no notifications or anything to inform me about this change, only to surprise me, when I stopped by. Absolutely unacceptable communication, or the lack of, totally unreliable. Two and a half stars. Switched from U-Haul since PS's rates were lower at this location... probably because it's borderline rural in this part of NoVA. There was a mix-up in the starter paperwork since I'd transferred my original reservation from the Fairfax branch, but Paul eventually located my information. Upon mention of Property Manager Rebecca's transparency on the Fairfax incident reports, he readily assured me that this branch had no such history... despite a pedestrian gate by the loading docks that could use realignment. Tour guide had to slam it repeatedly to shut, and it was never fixed in the 3 years I rented there. I was in and out in 30 minutes between forms and tour; signage or a facility map would've been appreciated, but no such luck on either. Office hours are shorter than access hours. Keyed locks sold in the store. Large freight elevator, clean bathroom, water fountains, no electricity within units, two public-use dollies just inside the dock entrance, dumpster inside the gates. Automated lights in hallways functional, some leaky pipes running overhead that dripped rust onto some items I sold. So basically, plan on tarping everything. Cleaning service for hallways is very attentive, doors/walls/floors shiny regularly. No administrative fee for downgrading to a smaller unit size. Price hikes every year. Billing cycle is by calendar month, and hike notices are sent a month in advance. Rent is due on the 1st of each month to pay for coming month, and it's nice being able to pay online ($10 fee for call center payments). Prorated move-out rates are available for the first 6 days of the month. Despite the second phone tree message, the national PS call center can't access your account without the last four digits of the driver's license you start your account with. Service level varies there too. Redundant phone tree will aim to redirect existing customers to the property phone number. Property phones aren't always answered during business hours, and if they take your number to "call you back in 15 minutes," they might not remember at all. They constantly raise the price after a few months been with them a year and now the price is double what the original amount was.

Move-in cost online (23.00) vs. actual move-in cost (54.13) was a bit of a surprise and not very well explained in person as to the why. Another surprise was the $1 advert on the site. Turns out this is only a $1 off your first months rent, not a $1 for your first months rent as I was lead to believe (through reading and conversation). Insurance discussion was another surprise to me. The wording in the insurance form PublicStorage (PS) provides is very misleading and assumes that if you have (home / renters) insurance, they will not cover your off-storage items. A quick chat with your insurance rep will reveal all. I assume this is part of the salesmanship involved in the job title, so not a knock on the customer service, just a bit of an inconvenience to have to call and get the facts. The individual that helped me on move-in explained it to me and I understood the reason for it afterwards. Likewise, I was not content to pay an extra $10 every month for my unit, when the advertised price online ($57) was what interested me to begin with. The lady I spoke with gave me a lot of information on how to address this concern. The customer service was up and down on move-in day, I was given a courtesy call, as a reminder and began with the paperwork and a tour of the facility as well as my unit. Effectively communicating for the individual I met on move-in day is an area of improvement. She was helpful (at times), but sometimes helpfulness that turns into a round about discussions about items that don't specifically answer a specific question are frustrating and a total waste of time. If ya don't know the answer, don't pretend, it's pretty obvious to determine whether or not you know the answer to a question like: "Am I able to access the unit after normal hours of operation?", when I'm not getting a "yes" or "no" and I am going to assume it's either one or the other. Overall experience was not terrible. I'd recommend PS to other people while warning them of specific employees to avoid. Cultural / Language barriers impacted my opinion on move-in day. Their was mounted frustration from the insurance debacle as well, but I resolved that and decided to give PS 3 stars instead of my initial 2. read more

If you enroll in automatic billing, the cost will increase monthly, and be wildly different than the promotional price offered upon reserving your unit. This is all stated in the fine print, that *any* of their prices are subject to change, and that they have the ability to do so. The storage facilities are not clean, nor are they secure. I was sent e-mails stating that my storage unit was not secure (not specifying any further what this meant), to drive hours to the unit, to find out that it was. The key-pad system to enter the unit and elevator, is beyond headache-inducing, and impossible to use if moving items as a single individual. Furthermore, cancelling your unit is a day's worth process in and of itself. The staff was unhelpful, unavailable, and replied 'that's just how it is,' when any questions were asked. read more

I shopped for a few quotes in nearby locations in the area and ultimately chose Public Storage for the following reasons: Location: It is closeby and also happens to be by my preferred dry cleaners. Price: They had a $1 for the first month and 15% monthly discount deal if you booked online. However, when I called they had an even better deal of 50% off the first month and a 25% off monthly discount plus taxes/fees/add-ons of course. Facilities: It's new. It's clean. It's secure. Service: I received excellent customer service here both face-to-face and over-the-phone. They were knowledgeable of their services and explained all the necessary details about renting out a space. They also provided much feedback about their facilities. They were prompt, friendly, and incredibly helpful during the sign-up process as well as during my first visit to check out their facilities. In addition, Public Storage has been around for years and is a reputable storage company which also helped to convince my overall decision to rent out a unit from them. read more

The facility itself is clean and well kept and the property manager Nabila will go above and beyond to get you to sign up. In her part of going above and beyond she specifically told us they raise the unit prices yearly and not before then. Obviously this was a huge incentive and the reason I didn't go with any other storage unit in the area. Well I haven't even been a customer for 6 months, I haven't received any written notice but they did make sure to email me an invoice with a price increase for $12.00 for the unit. This is ridiculous! $12.00 on a price increase and I haven't even been a customer for 6 months... How many more price increases will they fit in within the year????!!!! So after getting this invoice I called Nabila the property manager. She literally said 'not my problem you contact customer service. goodbye". So I did contact customer service, I was passed along to a supervisor to figure a solution out and instead I get an answering machine. AN ANSWERING MACHINE FOR CUSTOMER SERVICE? So I left a voice mail with my information, account number and still haven't heard back from them. Is this how they solve problems? My experience at PS was a good one. I was provided a tour of the facility and shown how to use all of the amenities including the doors and the gates to access the building. Nabile walked me through everything and was extremely nice. The grounds of the storage bin are clean and the office hours are adequate for my storage needs. They will raise the price on you after a few months, if you change credit cards and there's an autopay issue, they will not warn you that this payment did not go through and will just send a message saying a late fee of $20 has been applied. Unfortunately, I am in grad school a few hours away, but I will be very happy to stop paying the excess fees soon when I move out, including the not-advertised mandatory monthly "insurance" on your unit that doesn't cover any damages on your stuff. I don't know if there's anything better out there, but this company is definitely deceptive and is trying to get every dollar out of your pocket. You deserve better than this company. read more

I was in transition for a year and I needed a place to stow my stuff. This particular Public Storage facility fit the bill and had a good staff: answered my questions clearly, efficient in helping me get set up with a storage unit, getting my online billing setup, and quickly checking out when I was finished using it. I came in one day and found that some people had shattered their glass coffee table in the hallway and left the mess there. Once I told the staff at the front desk, they were immediately responsive, sweeping and cleaning the hallway up so I could get my stuff without having to walk over the mess. The facility is clean, climate controlled, and easy to access with cars/moving trucks. Service is friendly and straightforward. My husband and I had a storage unit at this location for over 3 years and were very pleased with the facility. Prior to renting a unit here, we had one at another Public Storage location and experienced several problems with the temperature in the building, the gate being broken, some of our payments not being processed, etc.along with other issues but nothing like that happened with the Chantilly location. It was always clean and seemed to well operated. If I could make any suggestion for improvement, it would be to have more of the flat bed carts available. On busy weekends, sometimes all of the carts would be in use and we'd have to wait for one to become available or move things by hand. read more

When I first rented it took 2 hours to set up my account as the person at the counter did not know what she was doing and the people she as trying to get to help her had no clue either. In addition there was only one person working so she couldn't deal with other customers while waiting on me. Their computer system is very cumbersome to set up an account. Everytime you call customer service you cannot get someone to talk to but they sure call you when they want a payment and they say go to the facility to pay. Like I have time to wait around there again. If it wasn't such a hassle to move my stuff I definitely would seek out a facility with better customer service. read more
