I stopped by because I was helping someone move their stuff here. The place has competitive prices and the storage area was clean. They have cats you can borrow to help you move things easier. There is plenty of space to park while you load and unload, for you to get in the storage area you have to input a combination to open the door out gate. I have been with Public for over 2 years and now the costs have jumped 100% since I started. I am forced to find alternative location. Small postcard mailed to me to "notify" of increase. Happened before but small card never received and jump in price noticed too late to my surprise. They are able to communicate with email all the time for payment but increase in rental fee sent with small "postcard" as if I wouldn't have noticed. My lock was missing and the attendants placed a temp lock to secure my property. I came in to replace the lock and HATTIE was amazing. She helped and assisted me near closing time. She waited for me to go to the store and get a new lock. She was pleasant to work with and willing to go out of her way to help me. I really appreciate the customer service she offered. read more

Moved in the middle of the month they prorated me in. I paid also in advance for 3 months. Due to covid I had to remove my belongings before the last month thinking that prorate me out. I just rented a place here, and the girl at the front desk with the orange hair is one of the rudest, most unprofessional workers I've ever met. The place is filthy, there's bird droppings, broken glass, and spiders everywhere. The only thing they're good at is raising the price. I would NOT recommend this place to anyone. ZERO STARS! Initially I reserved a 10x15 on February 18th to hold all my things in, when the movers saw the space they thought it would be a good idea to get the 10x20, that was 10 days later on February 28th. I went to the front desk to cancel my spot and my fiancé reserved the new spot to avoid confusion so I could get a refund of $70 since I had initially paid through to the second month at a prorated amount at $100 they said I had to pay for the first month which came to $30 with the $1 promotion and processing fees. I was fine with that since I needed more space. although $30 for 10 days on a space I never used was irritating. I noticed I never got refunded even though I was promised it otherwise I wouldn'thave moved spaces if I knew I was going to lose $100. I have left several messages on the district manager, Jaclyns phone and have yet to talk to her so I tried Megan the senior district managers phone number and still nobody to talk to. Spend the extra cash at a better storage space or you will lose your money here! *UPDATE* I put a dispute through my credit card and finally got a call back. Only to find out that they could only send me a check in the mail, upon receiving the check I took off the dispute. Only to find out a month later that they sent me to collections because they aren't competent enough to see that they already got my money. 'Should be no stars. They lie, they change the rules and the due dates to be able to charge fees. The whole company is a scam. They will up your rent every few months to say they are keeping up with other storage places - NOT True. They are higher priced than many and more low class. This place blows. The guy working the front desk was always a jerk. I hated trying to climb the rusty stairway up to the second floor in fear it would collapse so I ended up using the elevator. I was two days late on my payment once and they disabled my entry code which caused a lot of embarrassment when I went to meet a friend there to give him some stuff. Not to mention the rental price went up regularly. I ended up paying $93 a month for a unit not much bigger than a small walk in closet. What a fucking rip off. I moved to Wauconda Self Storage and got a unit three times bigger for $110 a month. Bye bye Public Storage. read more

This storage place is significantly cleaner than any of the other storage places we have visited in the area and it hasn't flooded with all the crazy rain storms we've had (which is a big deal). Steven, who was working the front desk was helpful, he showed us a couple of units and then even looked at different public storage locations to get us the best price. Steve took notice and gave me a call to let me know my storage unit was unlocked. Steve went above and beyond to notify me. On your 1st visit with Public Storage, they will ask you to rate your experience online. Do not rush into it with 5 stars because when problems start, district manager, Jacklyn Hastings, will ignore your phone calls and emails. Your time has no value to them. In response to any problems, they will suggest that you read your contract. The irony? - My contract stated that I paid for unit 47B, which was never made available to me. I was taken to a unit 47C instead. I had no reason to question whether they took me to the correct building as I couldn't even imagine their employee not knowing the difference, and the number painted on the wall next to the unit was "47". Public Storage employee never unlocked unit 47B for me and I couldn't store anything in a unit 47C as I had no right to do so. While Jacklyn was hiding from me, I had to find alternative storage (friend's spare room) before I leave for my trip out of the country. When I asked for a full refund, after numerous calls and emails, including call to the corporate office, they finally did the following: 1) Deducted one month's rent and their administration fees out of my refund, although I never had access to the unit 2) Advised me to wait 4-6 weeks for the check to be mailed, although I prepaid CASH for several months. Apparently, there was not enough cash in the office and my travel arrangements meant nothing. 3) Informed me that check will be mailed to the address where I will no longer live because I am moving before I go out of the country, which was the reason to rent a storage unit for my possessions to begin with. As I was trying to figure out how to deal with all this while still in the office at 990 S Milwaukee Rd, in Wheeling, a customer, who was about to sign a contract, asked for her credit card back before she was charged. She said, that after witnessing how my issue with PS was being handled, she didn't want to take chances to rent here. I then asked the employee to, please, call the manager because I really needed answers and district manager Jacklyn Hastings never returned my messages. Jacklyn answered the phone because she knew that this call was coming on PS line and told the employee on duty that she will call me later. She couldn't talk to me at the moment because, supposedly, she was busy with a customer. This "will call you tomorrow" I've heard every single time I approached PS staff. When you read other unsatisfied customers' feedback about their possessions being auctioned off while their unit was paid for, it could have been me! Public Storage employee signed contract with me for unit 47B, while showing me unit 47C. If I put all my belongings into unit 47C where employee took me, and if I left the country the next day, all my stuff would have been removed and sold by the time I got back because the unit they took me to would never show up in their system as being rented to me. They could even treat it as break and entry. The mistake was completely on their part, however, they wouldn't own it. Although PS employee's mistake, not mine, created the issue, manager's action, or should I say lack of action on the matter, made me reconsider using PS facilities. Avoid doing business with Public Storage! Their motto is 'hit and run.' Consider selling your stuff and keeping the money yourself before Public Storage sells it for you. Or leave your stuff in your friend's garage / basement for half the price PS charges. Also, notice, the insurance PS forces you to buy covers nothing - read it. None of your valuables will be covered in any case; your family photos, documents, jewelry - none is covered by insurance! After that, if you are planning to store junk that has no value, then it will be cheaper just dumping it at a garage sale. And if any property you are planning to rent is managed by Jacklyn Hastings, you will have much more enjoyable experience screaming into a black hole than getting callback from Jacklyn Hastings. Our rate only went up once in the 18 months we rented there and it went up 4.00. Our ending rate was 37.00 for an upstairs unit-plenty large enough. They have an elevator which is always up and running. No need to take any stairs. The entry doors are automated for easy entry and exit. They have three medium sized carts that you can use without fee-just get the key from the office. The only reason we moved out of Public Storage is because we moved over 30 minutes away. I was initially satisfied with the service of the front desk, but a month and a half have passed and no one contacted me regarding the fee adjustment that they had promised me. I had ordered my current storage space online for $20 cheaper but they weren't able to honor that because the front desk staff didn't know how to override that since it was a transfer from a smaller unit into a bigger unit. I was told that the manager will be able to do that when she comes back from her vacation. It has been over a month and I have already been charged for another month. It is $240 a year that they will be over charging me. It seem like as long as they got your stuff and your money, they don't care anymore. They have not returned my phone call or my email.
