I love the location and the feel of the restaurant. A one page menu of great food makes it easy to choose what I want.

Great pub atmosphere. The sliders spot on fries need to be blanched but tasty. Could use a few more tap selections.

Not impressed. We were one of 3 tables when we came in and it took far too long to get our food. Then, they left out one meal, did not check on our table, and did not even offer a discount for the horrible service. I had to chase down our server to get the final plate of food, by that time everyone else was almost finished eating. I had high school girls with me and they complained the portions were too small. When I first moved here a year ago from Atlanta, I was pleasantly surprised to find a place like Public. You can tell that they make a big effort to use locally sourced ingredients for their dishes. The house fries with garlic and rosemary are genius! If you go for dinner- you MUST get the salmon with turnip fries. They are known for their pickles so give those a try too. The only thing is- it's kind of hard to find... but it's worth the hunt. read more

So maybe I hit it in the wrong mood, but I was a bit disappointed. I thought the tap beer selection was lacking and the prices were way too high, even for a downtown spot. The staff was friendly, and the bartender recommended the sliders. The sliders were very basic - nothing special about them - and over cooked. Being from out of town, I had no idea what this place was. We ordered water to drink and I don't think our waitress was too fond of that. The menu is very limited and the only thing that sounded good without spending $20 on a meal they were out of. The portions are small. I had no idea what half of the ingredients were on the menu. I had The Cuban and it was good. My wife had the sliders and they were tiny. My mother-in-law had a salad, but they failed to put everything in the salad that was stated on the menu. The fries were good, but it's hard to mess up fries. The Public has a feel that locals love if you are wanting to have a few drinks with friends. read more

I'm really just not a fan. The drinks are very pricey for what you get. Food was ok, but again, over priced for the quality and flavor. I have friends that rave about Public, but the expectation of the experience far outweighed my actual visit. I would go back again, but this definitely isn't my first choice. Very divergent atmosphere compared to other pubs. Food was ridiculously flavor full, and plated with an eye for detail. I loved this places décor more than anything. The beer selection was also great. The food was good. I got the prairie sliders with regular fries and it was plenty of food and under $10. The reason we went was to see someone play an acoustic show so the fact that the location was so awesome was just icing on the cake. I used the Yelp voucher (only 1 per table) however I wouldn't have minded paying full price. Will definitely be back!...Good service too! :) read more

3 star is based off the food. Everything I've had here is extemly bland, but I've only ever had their dinner service. The staff is friendly, I love the location and interior, just there dinner menu is nothing special. Worst restaurant I've eaten at downtown. read more

Recently had a chance to check this place out with my wife, very impressed. In a rare change of events both my wife and I decided to order the same item. We started off with an appetizer(Pickles/Cheese/Salami/Bread), not usually a fan of sweet pickles, but these ones were amazing. You can't really mess up Salami & Cheese, so it was just a welcome addition to the pickles. Both of us wound up ordering, I believe Brisket Tacos, they were delicious, but for me, the black beans and rice were probably the best I have ever had. My wife opted for a Caesar Salad, and was thoroughly impressed with the freshness of the salad. Finished our meals with some dessert, I went with the Bananas Foster and she decided on a Strawberry Creme Brûlée. Pretty sure she inhaled her dessert, because I was two bites in and hers disappeared. Overall, I highly recommend this place, easily could be a brunch type of establishment. read more

We just ate lunch here and it was great from start to finish! The staff are energetic and friendly and know their business, and the food was delicious. We split a Mediterranean plate (hummus, pita and tapenade with a small gathering of greens) and a pie/pizza starring beef brisket. Both dishes were tasty and well prepared. I am really excited to have a place like this in Wichita. It's sorely needed. That being said-I need to go back to give them another shot. We went at a strange hour of the day on a Saturday. So no happy hour..Why don't places do a mid day happy hour on Saturdays? I'd go-obviously. Anyway, the place looks like it's half renovated, there's still that green glow of your uncles basement on the walls. Love the tea towels for napkins-mason jars. The brews on tap were good, could be better. Please get a beer list for people! I asked for one and the poor waiter had to rattle off things from the top of her head. They were also setting up for a holiday party so everyone was moving tables around, making lots of noise but it had to get done, I'm sure. We really wanted to stop it for an appetizer and beers so we ordered the rosemary fries. They were good, however jarred garlic tossed on top of undrained fries is not $7 worthy. There was fresh, lovely rosemary on the fries but topped with jarred garlic, WHY? I will go back to give it another try-like I said, Wichita needs a place like this. read more

We had our first lunch date in a while (thanks to a gramma and aunt taking the chitlens), so we went downtown to eat and shop a bit. Public was suggested, and we were glad we listened! The margarita was terribly small, but we learned there a good reason for that...we were one and done! Strong and tasted great! We both had the prairie sliders, and if they weren't good enough, the fries...holy crap the fries were incredible! We'll never make homemade fries without garlic and rosemary again! Easily the best fries we've ever had in Wichita, which means Five Guys and Bionic Burger have now been bested. Going back there soon!!! read more

Worth the wait!!! Flew in Wichita too late to make dinner on Sunday, but knew I'd be back on Thursday in time for dinner! Public was worth the wait! The chicken and waffles are an enjoyable journey of the traditional path. I had to post this review so I didn't inhale them! Love the building and patio. Food was good. Prices average $11-15. Live music was good. Servers were a bit less than stellar. My husband said his old fashioned cocktail was mixed really well ( one of the best he ever had). ask about kids menu - unpublished but exists. As a local omnivore who likes to give every locally-owned restaurant their fair share of my business, I've composited my overall experience since Public first opened into this one review. The short of it: I still recommend Public to friends & visitors for the things it does well EVERY TIME (cozy atmosphere, convenient location, craft beer, interesting cocktails, free shuffleboard, etc.) but my main caveat is that you really never know what to expect. For that reason I make my recommendation with multiple 'buts' & no longer go there myself unless dragged by force. The long version: I can say without hesitation that the most predictable failure will be bad service. I don't mean just slow-at-rush-hour or once-in-a-while-careless service, I mean bad news bears. every. single. time. Remember, I'm saying "Go there, try the food, but expect to wait 20-50 minutes and feel uncomfortable in approx 3 different situations before leaving." Imagine some variation on multiple servers rushing past waiting customers or empty plates & glasses without a glance/kitchen staff wandering through the restaurant at peak dining hours/bartenders oblivious to the customers sitting right in front of them; then your server seeming distracted or terrified or inconvenienced by your arrival; then your food order going awry & instead of the server/manager acting as liaison, the cook himself comes out to describe show exactly he failed at your steak...the list goes on, but you get the picture. Awkward. When you finally have a menu in hand, we begin the tricky game of choosing between genuinely creative & satisfying food, & the overpriced fine-dining portions of gimmicky hipster fare. APPETIZERS That paper cone of herby/garlic fries with its trio of sauces might be the most solid choice you'll ever make. Once, in a streak of despondence with the rest of their menu/service, I gave up on entrees & ate only the fries & was completely satisfied! I have always skipped the other apps in general because the young urbanite demographic they aim to please isn't always as well off as their 'gastropub' prices seem to expect. No offense, but I've done enough grocery shopping in my young adult life to know $6 for cornbread muffins is a joke not worth laughing at & even the fries that make me truly happy are a splurge at $7. Moving on. SALADS aren't my fave thing to eat at restaurants, but I had the Caesar once & it was fair, although the rustic cornbread croutons seems anomalous with the general mood of that salad. Like I said: if you want a light lunch, the fries are good. SANDWICHES. I don't really want to talk about how the Cuban has SWEET pickles on it, because then we have to deal with the tricky sub of salami for ham & that forces us to confront the chipotle aioli...all of which is presented as entirely acceptable instead of totally bizarre. It's like telling me a grilled ham & swiss with lettuce & a tomato slice is a BLT. The same free interpretation applies to the banh mi, which sounds so different from any version I've had at legitimate Vietnamese restaurants around town that I don't even want to try it. See what I mean? The Caprese is just that, order it & breathe already; the brisket tacos are more Baby Bear than Papa but wth; & the Prairie Sliders taste gamey bc they are, so deal with it. In short: maybe order the fries? As for the PIZZA...three words: DONT EAT IT. There's no shame in offering what you're good at making & leaving the rest to the other guy. Taco Bell shouldn't serve breakfast & McDonalds is blowing smoke if it thinks it's some kind of Starbucks. Likewise, Public's attempt at pizza is a sad puppy I'd rather gunnysack right away for everyone. They have constant issues w cooking the dough thoroughly, they deviate from the perfect trifecta of the magherita (spoiler alert: capers & rosemary crash the party), & while I genuinely enjoy my sweets & savories highlighting each other in bold new pairings, the sweet/salty atrocity that is the Matterhorn needs to die in a fire. A sweet jam that has nothing to do w what I know of tomato-ness holds cheese to crust, where arugula & paper thin, spittingly salty slices of prosciutto make a sad foray at earning their $14 price tag. Also, I would like to defend Uncle Jessy from the offensive tribute of the heavy handed, flavor-confused, men-are-meat-and-cheese-fiends pie that rounds out the category's total fail. In summary: eat fries. ETC. I once enjoyed a delicious beef medallion entree but I no longer see it on the menu. Dinner/dessert specials are usually creative and have, on several occasions been delicious (shrimp/grits; mango/cilantro sorbet; MORE please), but sporadically so & always more pricey. We once had a failed order compensated with a bubbling apple crisp/ice cream on the house. I've always loved the beers & experimental mixology in their classic chunky-cut glassware. Atmosphere always feels warm & hip. Shuffleboard is, I repeat, free. Oh yeah, & the fries are good. read more
