Went to Public with my sister and her family for dinner. We had a few IPAs and sours on draft, and all were fantastic. We also shared the pork belly, which was the star of the meal by far. I highly recommend it! For entrees, we had two steaks and a burger. I am removing one star for the steak. It was bland. The presentation was beautiful, but the seasoning was disappointing and it was dry. The burger, on the other hand, was delicious and juicy. The kids meals were also a bit hard to eat. The Red Lamborghini pizza is so good! But, I must say, if you don't like chewy dough you probably should steer clear. As for me, I love it, so it was perfect. I don't usually like sausage, but the lamb sausage was mild and appetizing. I ordered this to split with a side of sweet potato fries (just because yum!) They came out kind of "soft," not really crispy, but the waitress had asked our preference prior so if you prefer them crispy be sure to ask for them that way. One of the best meals I've had in a while. As others have stated, there's a lot to love about Public. The ambiance -- a cozy, cool basement area with fun decorations. The location -- right in the heart of Old Town. The food -- inventive farm-fresh menu with something to please everyone, from vegetarians to picky meat eaters. The drinks -- unique cocktails that are worth visiting for all on their own. I had some beef sliders and a meat/cheese/pickle tray. Everything was delicious. Those pickles though. Damn. An Great Venue, Serving Mediocre Food and Good Craft Beers, with a Weirdo. When you show up, you can turn right to visit the outside patio area for live music drinks or turn left for food and drinks. The patio is awesome--a crumbing building, with no roof, converted into a great outdoor space for small concerts. You can eat and drink out there. We actually had dinner inside and then headed out to the patio to hang out for a bit. One weird and tacky thing happened while we were outside. As the band was setting up, it was about 30-45 minutes prior to the start of the show, and a person (not sure if he was with the band or the restaurant) started shaking people down for a cover charge. It didn't matter if you were in the middle of your dinner or sitting there to enjoy the ambiance--he was telling everyone to pay the cover. We told him to go fly a kite because we already paid for our dinner and had been hanging out for more than 20 minutes prior to him shaking us down. Who does that? I just couldn't believe people were acquiescing to him. Anyway, we ordered beers and started with the Buffalo Cauliflower ($8), lightly fried cauliflower, tossed in buffalo sauce, and served with celery and house blue cheese dressing. It was pretty sad--more like not fried at all--and basically thawed cauliflower drenched in sauce and piled on a plate. I ordered the Koren-style Pork Spareribs ($18) that are grilled ribs, smoked with a dry spice rub, and slathered sweet and spicy BBQ sauce, cabbage, carrot, and radish wasabi slaw, served with a choice of a side. It was a big letdown because the ribs were overcooked and leathery; the sauce was good, but not very zesty or robust for Korean-style BBQ. My date ordered the Serenity Farm Smash Steak Burger ($16), which was a half-pound Creekstone Farms burger with Alma Creamery aged cheddar, Serenity Farm green tomato Relish, caramelized onions, lettuce, within a Bagatelle Bakery sesame-seed bun, and a choice of side. While it looked amazing on paper, it was a disappointment for her--she couldn't decipher all the amazing farm-to-table ingredients and the whole thing fell flat. The kids ordered the Prairie Slider ($6) that comes with a choice of fruit or fries and they were happy with it. Overall, this place is OK as a venue and bar, but not good for food. The waiter was very short and snippy with us from the moment we sat down. Not even quite sure why. My sons pizza was good, but I ordered the brisket tacos and they were terrible. We made a reservation through OpenTable for 11:45 on Father's Day, as we were passing through from Salina on our way to Dallas, where we live. We were seated right away, although we got there a wee bit early. There were not many tables sat in the restaurant, which surprised us for a holiday and a Sunday. The brunch selection is small, but that is just fine for a farm-to-table joint and is almost expected. My partner decided on the chicken with biscuits and gravy, and I opted for the traditional American breakfast, with poached eggs, potatoes, and bacon. Our waitress was quick about refilling our beverages, but by the time we had waited 45 minutes for our dinner and hadn't been acknowledged, tensions started rising. Eventually, I guess something on my face brought a server from other section over to tell us that our food would be coming out shortly, and that the kitchen "had broken several poached eggs". What?!? This isn't IHOP. I get that it's difficult to poach an egg. That's why I pay someone at a restaurant to do it. But the fact that we weren't informed of this until an hour after we ordered was a big misstep in a restaurant that wasn't even close to full occupancy. I would have gladly offered to have my eggs any other way if it would have saved us from waiting so long for our breakfast. My partner's chicken with biscuits and gravy was pretty darn good. My food was all room temp, and my egg wasn't properly extracted from the poaching liquid. Nonetheless, I was happy just to see food. The butter for my toast was ice cold and unspreadable. The amount of jam they gave me wasn't even enough for one piece of toast. Our waitress apologized and remedied this quickly. The potatoes were more like thick-cut potato chips instead of breakfast potatoes, but they were probably my favorite part of my meal. What saved my experience from two stars here was that my meal was comped without me having to ask. That was the correct way to handle it, and I appreciate that service. I guess my advice if you want to go to Public is: don't get your eggs poached, unless you have a full day to commit to the meal. read more

I REALLY like this place. Nestled in the basement level of an Old Town brick building that was a casket factory in a former life, the place has been reborn as a fun, business casual gastropub. Great selection of craft beers, amazing lunch and dinner selections. The salads are delicious and large. Public is one of my favorite spots in Wichita. It has a speakeasy feeling, hidden under all the brick and mortar of Oldtown. You look around and just imagine the history and secrets the walls hold. But Public is no secret, in fact it was featured on the Travel Channel for their mouth-watering bison sliders. This time I decided to go with "The Uncle Jessy", I mean how can you go wrong with BBQ brisket ON A PIZZA?! It was delicious! The bits of bleu cheese added an extra dose of flavor to the pie. I'm not sure what they do to keep it from getting greasy, but the honey wheat dough crust is one of my favorite parts. I love greasy food just as much as the next guy, but it can get a bit overwhelming on a pizza. So many people typically just throw the crust away so you have to appreciate a place that makes it more than just a handle to hold your meal. I also couldn't resist ordering a side of sweet potato fries even though I knew the pizza would be plenty filling, and I don't regret it! Everything on the menu at Public is created with care. Thanks to the friends I've never met on Yelp, I found this gem in downtown Wichita on my long drive home. A few things to mention first; awesome and unique setting, clean, amazing food, and great craft beer selection. I'll start with beer. They have a lot of Kansas beers there I've never heard of before and even cooler, they have matching brewery glasses too! If you're from out of Kansas and you stop at Public, please remember to drink local. Unique setting is an understatement. From the basement entrance, to the vintage books laying all over the bar; this spot will have you feeling like you stepped back 6 decades. I feel like any place that serves you water in a mason jar is doing more than one thing right! Haha Finally, the food. The most important thing I can tell you is this. I've never been anywhere where I was able to have 2 IPA beers, a main course, and TWO deserts! Holy cow is their dessert menu off the chain. I had a warm apple crumble with what appeared to be some home made or high quality ice cream, and then the chocolate mousse brownie. After my second dessert, I honestly considered having seconds on the apple crumble. I shouldn't forget, I had the mac and cheese for my main course, and it was a 10 out of 10. Our first time here was a Friday night. Good food and service. Unique style and location. I loved the mason jar glasses for water and the beer selection was diverse. We had the pickle appetizer platter. It was really good but would have benefitted from a stoneground mustard relish and an extra slice of cheese to have one for each baguette slice. My husband had the pasta special with shrimp and a pesto cream sauce. He said it was good but could have had a little more kick. I had the chicken alfredo and vegetable pizza special. It was really big and I have leftovers. It was very good, but the crust reminded me of Pizza Hut breadsticks, which was odd. Our dessert was the apple crumble with vanilla ice cream. It was awesome. We walked inside and were immediately greeted by our host. She took us to our booth and our waiter quickly stopped by to ask what we wanted to drink. As always, I asked for water with no ice. The place is a little dark, but that's to be expected. Who would want to come to a well-lit place on a Friday night for some beer? Maybe a few, but most would prefer a reasonably dim and chill place. Public is able to provide that kind of atmosphere for locals and that's great. I wasn't that hungry so I didn't order much. I ended up getting the Buffalo Cauliflower and Papa Bear's Brisket Tacos. I'm not a fan of veggies and I don't think I can ever become a vegetarian but if one day, for some odd reason, I am forced to only eat vegetables, I think I would be okay with eating Public's buffalo cauliflowers on a regular basis. A group of us went here to just hang out and have a few drinks. I like the decor of the place. It's kind of a hipster basement vibe. We ordered fries to eat which were a good snack, but unfortunately the same cannot be said for the Mediterranean Plate. I'm not a huge fan of curry powder and that's all I could taste in the hummus. Maybe it was an off day or something because another reviewer's picture of the hummus didn't look nearly as yellow as mine. I'll still come back again to try real food though. One of my favorite spots in Oldtown..... PUBLIC! This place is built in and next door to the Brickyard and is located in the basement area when you walk in. They use the space which is very rectangular to begin with very well. I just came here with a friend for a few brews and some good dinner. TIP if you're reading this on your mobile phone, buy the $10 for $20 voucher. It'll save you some moola, while being able to not restrict yourself of what's on the menu to try. Their menu is best described as diverse. There is a different range of foods that are American, Tex-Mex, Vietnamese and a few other fusions. The menu itself is very small and has a few choice. Which ever one you do get, you'll be in for a treat. I had their Cuban sandwich which was damn! So flavorful with large pieces of pork in melted cheese with a homemade Ciabatta bread bun. Served with sliced crispy potato chips. All this food for under $10. Their beer menu is excellent, so if you're a beer snob, you will like the choices they offer. It's the ultimate bar with open space, couches and a large selection of grade A beer. The downfall you ask? The food. It is absolutely bland. I ordered the special of the day- fish tacos. There were 3 beer battered cod strips that tasted like air and grease. My boyfriend ordered the brisket tacos that didn't have much flavor. Luckily I got a side of sweet potato fries that saved my meal (you can't really mess those up). Lastly, the prices were way to high for the quality and quantity of food.
