I stopped in here as it was one of the only places around that was open (24 Hours). The El Pastor burrito I ordered was painfully average and extremely overpriced for the quality. The meat had almost no flavor and the sauce that came on top of the burrito was bland and unimpressive. My friend ordered the El Pastor tacos which he enjoyed, along with a horchata that was as bland as the burrito. The waitress was kind and friendly, but also forgot several items and we had to ask for things multiple times before we got our entire order. The bill was unexpectedly expensive for the quality of the food and we left dissatisfied. It's an okay place. We stopped here for quick breakfast on 4th of July since all other places were closed. We were the only customer there and the server was nicely provide us with free chips and salsa on the table. We ordered breakfast menu that has eggs, beans, steaks. I live right by this place for a year now. I have been here only once, but not from lack of trying. I have walked the 3 blocks to this place multiple times only to find it closed... I guess the large sign on the building that says open 24 hours is just a suggestions. Boo to you guys . All I wanted was a taco just one taco. The one time I did eat there it was ok.. Nothing special. Just a normal late night burrito place. Sure they have other food and a full bar( you have yo have some big bucks if your thinking of drinking here... It's like $$$$$a drink..) Went there for the first time with a friend to escape the crowd at another bar. We ordered a margarita party pitcher and watched old dudes croon all night. I've gone back several times and have observed the same service as Craig. I wouldn't accuse the wait staff of racism, but they may be shy around non-Spanish speakers. Just be assertive and go to the cashier to ask for your check and you'll do fine. Other than that, the food is pretty great. I prefer the tortas, but they're known more around the neighborhood for burritos. The combination plates are always good. read more

Ahhh..Puebla. I've had many a drunk visits here. I'm sure the waiters/waitresses here have all seen me at my finest. The food is just OKAY..but I really come here because there's nothing else open at 4 am and my tummy's rumbling. Go for the quesadillas and lots of their hot salsa and double the rice. Get the horchata too-you won't be sorry. They do spanish karaoke on Friday/Saturday nights, and I've even found myself belting out a couple songs while I've had liquid courage. This place is a blast. A friend and I were starving after we went here for a movie, so we headed to Puebla, mostly because I loved their sign. My friend is vegan, so we took a chance coming here. You can't order a burrito on its own, so we both ended up ordering the vegetarian burrito dinner. The dinner comes with rice which had a really strange aftertaste and may have been cooked in chicken stock or something and the beans simply LOOKED too meaty for me to deal with, so I took them (along with the other half of the burrito) home to the human vacuum cleaner. Alison had made it very clear that she didn't want any cheese or sour cream, but when the plate came out, there was a pile of cheese on the beans and our waiter (who was very nice) said, "Cheese on the beans is okay, yes?" Sigh. The burrito itself was pretty good, but the guacamole in it seemed like it'd been sitting out all day. You know why I love Tecalitlan the most? Because they are OUT of guacamole sometimes because they make it fresh. Yes, it sucks because once in awhile they don't have any, but it's good to know you're getting guac that has not been sitting out all day and is starting to brown. I'm not sure that I'd go back to Puebla, but I am very intrigued by this karaoke night...also, the margaritas seemed very tempting. read more

el cheque por favor! Yes I have had to wait for service in this establishment, but after spending alot of time in Mexico and S.A. it seems customary to have to ask for the check. Someone once explained to me that it is an insult to rush people out. I live in Logan Square and have found better tamales (listen for the right cart in the evenings) but the margarita's are to die for here (strong and cheap) and the Kareoke to boot is the best entertainment for miles. We decided to try La Puebla since it was in the area. We walked in and I was amazed at how empty the place was. A family of about 8 came in after us, and that was it! Just us and them. So for the lack of clientele the service was exceptionally slow. The waitress did not even come over to us for 15 minutes. We finally ordered and the food took 45 minutes to come out. We even asked what was taking so long and she hadn't put our order in yet after 30 minutes, she "forgot". I ordered some green mole sauce and it was not good. I should've stuck to the red mole, but I figured I'd have something different for a change. I'll have the red next time. When we were done eating, we had to actually go up and ask for the check because the waitress NEVER came back. We stopped another waitress for water halfway through our meal. She rolled her eyes! La Puebla has been my two-year staple of drunken Mexican food. Portions are large. Taste is perhaps a 7; definitely not bad, but nothing too great. Delicious tortas. Good margaritas. The main positive aspect is that they're open, I'm drunk, and my apartment is two blocks away. Yes, the 24 hour aspect is probably the best part. I've only sat down to eat there a few times, but when I have the service is pretty good. Even once with a group of six (four from Minneapolis, where I'm sure the Mexican food is gross) we were served quickly and brought chips and salsa aplenty. Oh, and the bathrooms are always super clean. Always a plus when one is so drunk that they have to think and actively aim at a point in the urinal at which to pee. It almost feels like a ghost town restaurant which is ironic because it's located on a busy street in Chicago. We should've known to leave from that clue. Here is the summary... *The sign when you first enter says "Please wait to be seated" so we waited and waited and waited until finally a lady behind the bar noticed us and waved us over. *The service is terrible. *The steak is gross, chewy, and fatty. *The rice was bland and nothing special. *It took 10 minutes to get napkins and a refill on salsa. *They never refilled my drink or even offered. *The service is terrible. *The place was empty (should have been my first sign of the bad experience I was about to have). My wife and I took a walk to run a couple errands in the neighborhood, realized we were hungry, and randomly stopped at La Puebla. It was 2 or 3 in the afternoon, so the place was pretty much empty. The waitress brought us some fantastic chips and salsa right away and was very friendly. We ordered a veggie/avocado burrito and a small plate of nachos. It was plenty of food for both of us and everything tasted great. One small complaint that someone else mentioned is that the nachos were pretty skimpy. We got the small version which cost $5 or 6 and it consisted of 10-12 chips with beans and cheese on them. We'll definitely be going back though. read more

As many of us Chicagoans know, Mexican food is just about the only type of food you can buy late at night. So where do you go that's a a nice, clean sit-down restaurant that is classier than the standard taqueria with drunken patrons? Puebla Restaurant! I like this place so much that I came here three times in two weeks. The first time, my friend introduced three of us to this place, the second time I came with four other people, and the third time, I was with a group of 14 people! And each time the spacious, clean, and vividly colored and table-clothed restaurant could accommodate us. The tortas here are excellent - served on thinner bread than I'm used to from other taquerias - and can best be described as Mexican-style paninis that retain the flavor of the meat, guacamole, and other toppings you request. The torta is also served with a generous helping of fresh, refried red beans and Mexican rice. The portions are huge and as expected, are more expensive than a standard taqueria. The menu also includes items I'm not used to seeing such as an array of seafood and sopes. However, I'd stay away from the sopes because they're the equivalent of a hard corn meal english muffin, topped with meat and vegetables, and are therefore quite messy. The restaurant also serves delicious horchata (order the large), sangria soda, and margaritas. They also have an enticing dessert case that I will have to try next time. In conclusion, this is the best place to go in Chicago late at night for a nice sit-down dinner! read more

My friend and I went here when we couldn't decide where else to go and wanted a new place. He claims they have the best Mole he's had. I refuse to try it because I don't care for Mole. Then again, apparently I happen to try it at some of the worst places, according to him. Regardless, the food is reasonable and the salsa verde is quite good (though you usually have to ask for it) and I love the little spoons for the salsa! I always get the same thing (tacos) and drench them in salsa because I'm on a taco/salsa kick, but I'm never let down here. I finally decided to mix it up with a burrito and was jealous when my vegetarian friend got his with avocado and it looked better, but that's ok. I saved the other half of mine and rubbed it in his face later when he was hungry and without food. Word to the wise: do not get the large margarita. In fact, you could probably avoid the medium as well. My friend and I came in on NYE after 2 bottles of wine because we knew we needed food if we were going to make it to a party.........but of course being we decided it was a good idea to order a margarita too. We thought a large would be sufficient for the two of us. IT WAS GIGANTIC. We drank about half of it before we decided it was too much. Seriously, a small is sufficient. Puebla Restaurant is generally a good place to have on your list of options in Logan Square, particularly late-night. I have definitely had better Mexican but the food is still quite good and the margaritas are tasty. Beer is also very inexpensive. I drop in occasionally for the Juevos Rancheros which are really just fried eggs on a tortilla with salsa and cheese. It's always delicious and works as a cheap late-night or morning dish. I have also tried the fajitas which I can recommend although I would avoid the shrimp which are too small. As far as location goes, it's next door to the $4 movie theater and a block from the Blue Line L stop and bus station. read more

Puebla is a Godsend at 3:00am and you've been out boozing it up. It's maybe not the best at 6:30pm when you're totally sober but excellent when you need something to sop up some of that alcohol. Everyone has their favorite thing at any given Mexican joint and my favorite item at Puebla is the veggie burrito. I think they do such a good job with the fresh ingredients. I just love it! My sister swears by the Chiles Rellenos and now that she lives in the suburbs she's been known to call in an order for take out when she heads back home after a visit. I also love their cheese enchiladas but I only get them take out because the cheese is frequently not fully melted and that way I can heat them up a bit. Be careful with the salsa!! Sometimes it's mild and flavorful and sometimes it's hot, hot, hot, and spicy! it seems to depend on how old the salsa is. I one time made the mistake of getting my cheese enchiladas after some serious afternoon boozing at the Maproom. I picked them up as I stumbled home and when I got back I poured that salsa over the whole thing. After about three bites (Um, apparently my taste-buds were drunk too and the spiciness didn't really hit me.) my stomach was in extreme pain! Thank goodness I had a roommate at the time and she set me straight after some soothing chamomile tea. It's a pain I'll never forget. You are warned. read more

One of my favourite late-night restaurants, especially in Logan Square. It's high-quality, tasty food and it's presented well. The staff tends to be pretty friendly (though I've noticed a significant difference in service when I come in with a fellow honky girlfriend and when I come in with Boyfriend, who happens to be Latino and speaks fluent Spanish). The margaritas are killer. Two people to a pitcher over lunch = a heavy afternoon nap. For those saying the food is "okay" - be adventurous! Try something besides a burrito or quesadilla - the seafood menu, for example, is awesome! I might be their best customer. I go at least twice a week. I always have the same server, and she knows my order by heart. A word to those who haven't quite figured it out: they will not bring the check to your table proactively ... I have heard that it's considered rude, as a cultural standard. I go to the register to pay and have had no problem receiving my check in short order. I personally enjoy that Puebla's fajita veggies are not cooked until they resemble dead, gray slop like those at El Cid. I used to be a regular here and miss it a good deal. Not the best Mexican food you're going to get, but it does have lethal margaritas, good quality ingredients, and of course is open 24 hours a day. I've always found the service to be helpful, efficient, and responsive. My only real complaint is that the food in general isn't terribly spicy, and in some cases that's a real issue, as with lomo en chile de arbol. On the other hand, I love their pico de gallo, which is always fresh and very piquant. I definitely prefer this place to El Cid. read more

Decided to check out Puebla for a quick dinner before a movie at the Logan. It was 6ish on a weekday and the place was empty. And this is a huge place to be empty. I can't imagine what their rent is. The service was friendly and attentive but I swear we had at least 4 different servers during the course of our dinner. I don't know if they have some sort of rotating system in place but it was a little strange to be sat by one waitress, have another one bring us menus and waters, yet another one take our order, yet ANOTHER one bring out our food, etc. The food was decent for the price. I had the chile relleno tostada combo which I'm not sure I would order again (tostadas were far more awkward to eat than i had expected and the chile relleno didn't have a lot of flavor) but would certainly consider coming back to try the enchiladas which looked really good. It's a good place to get a decent meal at a decent price but I wouldn't go out of my way for Puebla. However since it's in the hood I will probably be back. read more

For the type of restaurant that it promises to be, it delivers. It's not fancy, it's not pretentious..just a simple local Mexican joint without flare(in a good way.) My family and I (with 3 kids under 3 years old, mind you) went on a Saturday night and for a Saturday around 7pm, it was empty. It was only us and another family of three. Anyway, our waitress was super nice and patient with us. She even played a song on the juke box when she notice that my niece and nephews were singing and dancing in their chairs. The food was pretty good and a great value. My sister ordered this beef soup that was great and would definitely get next time! This place holds a special place in my heart because it was the first place we ate at after moving from Florida to Chicago. It's also the closest restaurant to my house, open 24 hours and the decor looks like a fabulous pinata threw up, which is all very nice But despite all the perks, this place pretty much blows. The food is decent (there's much better Mexican in Logan), but it is so not worth the service. If you do get the hankering for Puebla, follow these few tips and you actually might enjoy it: 1. Make sure you have at least an hour for the experience. 2. Ask for drink and salsa refills well in advance. 3. Be aggressive with the check.
