BACON! Ohhh, it's so good. You can just taste that dirty, slippery, yet happy pig. This was my last breakfast place to try in the area, and boy oh boy, was I impressed. There is a reason they call it Pufferbelly, mind you, because their portions are GARGANTUAN. I could hardly keep my eyes open after 3/4th of my 1st plate (three total), I was so full. The server we had was awesome. He looked to be about 15, but was better than most servers in all of GeeJ. I somehow managed to make a complete mess of my water at the end of the meal (probably due to over stuffing myself) and he magically appeared with plenty of napkins and only a slight shake of the head. It was as if he anticipated every need of our table before it became a reality. Note: the side options you get with your meal are HUGE, yet wondrous - endless pancakes, a massive cinnamon roll, or a mammoth 'cat head' biscuit. Favorite side: Meow! (You can take the girl out of the south, but you can't take the south of the girl. This is a biscuit to be reckoned with!) I LOVE PUFFERBELLY! This place is so darn good...just the thought of going there always brings a smile to my face. It's an old train station and if you're nostalgic about trains, you will love the atmosphere. The staff here are very friendly and welcoming. They make you feel as if you're part of the family and really take pride in their love of Colorado and Grand Junction. Total downhome country folk here. No snobby attitude whatsoever. They are great at accommodating large parties too. The restaurant is very clean and well managed. It has the look and feel of home to it. Great choices on the menu and the servings are large. Their breakfasts are amazing! You can not go wrong with anything you order. It is simply THAT good! On this particular visit, I had the Green Chili Verde with New Mexico Chili...and so did a few of my family members. We love that particular entree that much! I ordered the strawberry stuffed French toast, which came chock full of strawberries and whipped cream. (A higher-quality restaurant would make its own whipped cream rather than the stuff out of the can, or would create a creamy sauce of some kind. Pufferbelly Station doesn't do that, though.) My partner ordered the banana stuffed French toast, and it was similarly loaded with fresh bananas and whipped cream. Both meals were VERY big and quite tasty. So far this is our favorite breakfast place in the GeeJ. Pufferbelly is attached to the old railroad station, which is still a functioning and running Amtrak station. It has an antique feel with model trains and train artifacts as the decor. I ordered the Mean Green with a Cinnamon Roll and my fiance ordered an egg white omelet. Our server was baffled by the request for egg whites, we described it to him and he understood what we wanted. (It's funny, we had the young waiter that everyone described in other reviews, he is really young...) Our food was excellent. The Mean Green was just that, a pile of hash browns, cheese, country gravy and tomatoes covered in green chili. A needed word to the health conscious: the portions are ginormous and you will not be seeing any of these items on Weight Watchers, that's for sure. Their green chili is wonderful. The Cinnamon Roll was huge and came with a little cup of butter to make it that much better. Super good. They must be made fresh daily. We sat in the caboose, well, that's what we called it. The tables were four inches too high or the booth benches was too low. I felt like a little kid eating at the big kids table. Furthermore, everything was cooked the way it tastes best. What a treat. We stopped by on a road trip through Colorado, and are glad we did. It is right on the train line and train themed. The staff were cheerful and fun- they let us know when Amtrak was coming through (right next to the windows, we could feel it), gave my sons an opportunity to "fix" a derailed model train and took them outside to blow a departing whistle. The food was home style and made to order. Locally made jams and hot sauces were featured and delicious. Service was quick, and our coffee was kept full. This is my all time favorite breakfast place that I've been to in Grand Junction! First off, the customer service is amazing. We're always greeted so politely and our waitresses are always on top of their game with drink refills and making sure everything tastes good. Even when the restaurant is super busy, it's never been an unpleasant place to eat. Sometimes there will be a short waiting time for a table, especially during their peak hours. The longest we've ever waited was probably 15 minutes but it's always so worth it! Our favorite waitress is Laddonna, E. She is so sweet and hard working! Her personality and kindness keeps us coming back for not only the amazing food, but the fantastic service. Pufferbelly really makes us feel at home! My boyfriend and I have a go-to order that we rarely stray from just because it is so good! I get the hobo breakfast with sausage, light cheese and a side of pancakes. He gets the same thing but with their homemade biscuit as his side. The portions are very generous, you always get your money's worth! We'll occasionally treat ourselves to their amazing cinnamon rolls but usually we're too full to indulge! Even though we always end up ordering basically the same exact thing, everything that we've tried and seen on the menu has looked and tasted amazing. We stopped here for lunch on the drive through town. It is located next to the train station so that was fun. It is a very old fashioned coffee shop where local's keep their coffee mugs on shelves at the entrance so they can grab them before sitting down for a meal. Very cozy but the interior is quite dated. We sat at a booth and ordered a cobb salad and a club sandwich. While waiting for our meal we saw the diner next to us get the green chili biscuits with scrambled eggs. Wow did it look wonderful. She told us she loves it, comes here just for this and only eats half (it is HUGE; each biscuit is the size of your fist and one order has two biscuits!) and takes the rest home. I wish we'd ordered that instead. My salad was bland. The lettuce wasn't fresh, the bacon was ice cold and in clumps (looked like they scooped it from the fridge) and the wait staff kindly ordered me another grilled chicken breast because my salad came with 2 small slices of a chicken breast. The dressing was ranch with blue cheese crumbles added to it (their version of blue cheese dressing). No bread or crackers were offered. Hubby had the club sandwich with fries. The fries were okay - a bit soggy and the sandwich was okay. Next time we will get the biscuits! read more

Gravy is on the bland side, and you'll probably need to bring a magnifying glass to actually find any sausage in the gravy. I visited Pufferbelly's 13 times last month and this is how I was treated. I spent more than $150/month at this location. After another bad experience 2nd one this week and it's only wed with customer service and more soggy togo food I asked to speak with the manager who turned out to be the owner. I've rarely seen such incompetence. This owner has been doing this way too long and is stuck in the past times of former greatness. Today while on the phone ordering togo the employee, ignored me while I was giving my order, to clock another employee in, she then asked for my order two more times and still got it wrong. The time clock was more important to her than a customer on the phone in mid order. When you enter to get your togo every staff member asks you over and over if you've been helped. No organization like most restaurants, it's not welcome to pufferbelly's come on in. It's forced to been helped, grumpy grumpy grumpy even over the phone. Have you been helped, have you been helped....... You can tell they do it because it's been drivin in my bad management. After addressing the sewer smell that makes me want to puke every morning which they say is being worked on... little is done to override the smell with something better. I also addressed the very poor customer service and ongoing problems. I brought up the togo quality which he admitted was bad due to the Styrofoam boxed. When I asked why not change them to ones with holes and fix the issues he told me in 20 years I was the first to complaint. I called him out on that statement and how poorly thing look, smell and function after 2 months of eating there every few days I think I've earned the right to be respectfully listen too. I'm not a visitor or tourist I've eaten here in two months more than I'm sure their own staff. The owner instead of listening to my complaints got angry and kicked me out. I've never been kicked out of anywhere. I've had this talk with many local owners about their to go service and all but this horrible manager took my complaint and made their togo service great. They addressed the soggy food of the 90s and made changes to fix the problems many didn't know they have because they don't order their own togo. Chillis, Applebees, Red robins, Texas road house have all redone their entire togo service. Applebees even stopped gouging their customers with $2.75 for 20 oz to go drinks and are now $.99. But not Pufferbelly. From the quality of the food to the carpet that looks and smells like its been there all 20 years. It's not aged well. I came here as a kid while the quality was better, model train was running and it was an experience, what a shame this owner has lost his love for providing that experience. Now signs are taped to the walls, the train hasn't moved in years and the atmosphere is old, tired and worn out. I brought my 20 year old daughter one time just to pickup togo and she didn't want to ever come back. Pufferbelly just left me with the wrong order that's soggy and grose, but I'm not hungry after the sewer smell anyways. It is no wonder sections of the restaurant are closed off and dark. The only people who show up have been coming for 20 years or don't know better. While Ihop and others have an hour waiting, you can always get as many empty tabled as you want at Pufferbelly. But there is no shortage of other peoples coffee cups for entertainment. -5 stars for being kicked out. read more

I went in for a late breakfast a couple months ago when my train was late and was taken back to this little 24 hour cafe my husband and I used to go to when he was going to school in New Mexico. I decided this was a place for him and I to go to, since we were looking for a breakfast spot in our new city. We went in Saturday and the place was hopping! Nonetheless, we were served promptly. Make sure to come hungry, because the portions are absolutely enormous. We're talking homemade biscuits the size of a man's hand, and cinnamon rolls the size of a salad plate. Also, it's pretty clear that anything that can be homemade is. The jam is not served in little prepackaged containers and is not super thick, like a lot of commercial jams. Because it was my husband's first time, I made sure to tell him what the waitress told me when I went in: the cinnamon rolls and biscuits are a must. When he took his first bite of biscuit, his eyes rolled back into his head, and when he tried the cinnamon roll, it was clear he fell in love. One thing we've had trouble finding is green chili with even a slight kick. Their homemade green chili that comes standard is a bit warm, but if you want that New Mexico smoky deliciousness, make sure to spend an extra dollar and get their Hatch green chili. read more

I guess people that go to Pufferbelly's don't Yelp. My eleven year old daughter and I have been coming here since before she was born (yep, prenatal!), so maybe that's why she loves to go here with me now. This place IS Grand Junction. Before the recession, a Saturday or Sunday morning breakfast at Pufferbelly's always meant a wait. Not any more, now you get right in. Yesterday at 8:30 it was about 3/4 full. My daughter had the pancakes with strawberries and whip cream. I know, horrible parenting. I had the Mean Green with eggs over easy (it comes with scrambled, but you can ask for your eggs any way you like them) and sour dough toast and coffee. The Mean Green is a pile of glop with hash browns, canned green chilles, eggs and God knows what else, but I love it. Sometimes I just get bacon and eggs with hash browns. Service is always very good because these are professional servers. For out of towners, it's a railroad themed restaurant next to a fully functioning Amtrak station. The incredible model train setups are rarely running now but when my kids were little and getting a little yancy, a trip to the running train models, or the view of a REAL passenger or freight train arriving or roaring past a few feet out the window was enough to chill them out. read more

The Pufferbelly has them all, and each is so good. For about $10, you can get a plate of amazing food so mountainous I can barely finish it, e.g. the Hobo Skillet or Green Supreme, plus a side of pancakes, toast, biscuit, fruit, or a giant cinnamon roll that could be a meal in itself, and all the coffee you can drink. It's fair to say though: the decor is outdated, quite run down, and not at all ritzy, but the atmosphere is small-towny and train-stationy. Service is pretty good. Delicious items on the menu. Hearty and flavorful. They serve breakfast and lunch only, but fantastic options for both. I'm a bigger fan of their breakfasts. They have huge homemade biscuits that are super scrumptious. Trying to decide between biscuits and endless pancakes to go with my omelette, and I'm glad I went with the biscuit. The pancakes are also good, but not very often do you get a biscuit that has a 4" diameter and is almost 3" tall. I had a very good bacon avocado omelette. We also had a Supreme Hobo breakfast. Took my kids here this morning, around 9:30 on a Saturday when there was a music festival going on in town. There was a short wait, but not more than 10 minutes. What can I say? The food was pretty good. My kids each had the Jr. Mouse breakfast which consisted of a huge pancake, scrambled egg, and a slice of bacon. It would've been plenty of food for me! I had the Belgian Waffle breakfast: a waffle, scrambled eggs, and two slices of bacon. I only ate half the waffle and my son only ate half his pancake, so we took the leftovers along with sides of sausage and toast for my husband. The service was a hair slow, but they were pretty busy. Our waitress was friendly and helpful. Typical American food. Nothing was amazing, but if you want good, standard American breakfast fare, this is a good choice. read more
