Living in Manhattan has been a disappointment in the way of pizza options. I'm not a picky eater, so I'll still eat pretty much anything, but the quality just isn't quite what I expected. A lot of places seem to use tomato sauce that is straight from the can without being properly seasoned. Before I moved to NYC from California, I had this glorified perception that New York City would be like pizza heaven and that I would be able to find the holy grail of all pizzas. Boy was I wrong! Lo and behold, my friends took me up to Pugsley's and I was blown away. This is by far the best pizza I have ever had and it reminds me of the kind of pizza comparable to Ninja Turtles. Furthermore, the prices here are ridiculously affordable and the portions are quite large. Do yourself a favor and try any of their toppings here (even plain cheese) and throw in some tasty garlic knots. You won't regret it!!! read more

In the past two months, I have laughed more than I've laughed in the last ten years. That being said, of course my regular date as of late would bring me to Pugsley's to relive his Fordham days. I bit my tongue when my date ordered us "The Love Pie" with a serious face. We played Ms. Pac-Man and I let him beat me because I wanted him to feel like a strong man. The pizza is just okay but you're going for the experience. And if the owner is there playing his trumpet, than an entertaining experience you shall receive. If he's not, then you'll still be entertained by the wacky and strange decor, the Fordham spirit that's everywhere, and the gong that they bang when your pizza is done. I feel almost guilty as a Fordham student to give it such a bad review, but it is undeniable that the pizza is probably the worst I have ever had (although the chicken roll is fine and the salad pizza is actually quite novel). let me you something, last year i was trying to find this place, i had to google map to find this place. i wanted to try pugsley's pizza for a long time, so september 11th 2014, my daughter, son and i came from manhattan by cab because she adopted a dog, we walked in there, the atmosphere was great!!! pics of fordham university, a giant gong, a horn, and friendly service. my son ordered a cheeseburger deluxe, my daughter ordered the baked ziti,and i ordered a meatball hero. took the food to go, got to the apartment, opened the pizza box, and oh baby!!!! it took two days for my son to eat the 1 pound cheeseburger, and my daughter day and an half for her ziti, had to take 1/2 my sandwich to work. their food is good!!!! read more

The pizza is not particularly noteworthy. The chicken roll is on the small side. The "calzone" is a loaf of bread sliced open and loaded up with mozzarella and ricotta. The prices are too high (Fordham students are paying for its convenient location). Nevertheless, Pugsleys is the bomb. The owner, Sal is completely crazy. HIs poor wife reacts to his antics (smashing the giant gong behind the counter, reading his broken-english inspirational quotes to his customers, playing the sax and singing karaoke with students) with a deep resignation that would befit any sitcom wife. Pugsleys is totally tacky and quirky and wonderful, and it is a great place to wind up when you are drunk and hungry at 2:30 in the morning, and a good place to grab a quick lunch or dinner, especially if you can take advantage of its outdoor seating. Any Fordham student or grad who claims to dislike Pugsleys is a total hater, and is probably lying, or at least conveniently ignoring all the good times they have had there. It isn't perfect, but it's a hell of a lot of fun, and a Fordham institution that is still appealing to outsiders. read more

Maybe I went on an off day (or maybe because it was a random weekday afternoon) but my experience here was rather mediocre. The place was empty except for two suits who appeared to be regulars and who also appeared to be drunk. But in a friendly happy drunk sort of way, which was nice. I gave my order to a woman who may have been Sal's wife and maybe Sal? I have no idea, but they looked like the owners. While generally friendly, they did not engage me in any conversation and did not do any of the entertaining things that Sal seems to be famous for doing. The food was eh. Chicken roll was interesting..but c'mon! It's just some chicken put inside a slice of pizza that's rolled up! And I didn't think the pizza was that great...tasty, but it didn't taste that fresh and I've definitely had better in Jersey. Cheesy garlic bread is fantastic and a plain slice will satisfy as well (I'm partial to University pizza).
