Awesome College Pizza spot in the Bronx lots of Fordham kids go there after a long night.

I'm not sure what the people who've given this place bad reviews are talking about. As a Fordham Alum I can say I really miss this place, and plan to go back next time I'm in the area. The pizza is great, particularly if you get it when it has just come out of the oven. Chicken rolls, bread and sauce, cheese fries and garlic knots are great too. I don't think I ever ordered anything there I didn't like. Sal makes the place lots of fun to visit with his sax playing, karaoke singing, and general craziness. By the way, I think that the Dr. Paul special mentioned in another review was named after a Fordham history professor. read more

I love eating pizza and this place certainly did not disappoint! I had the personal pizza pizza with onions and bell peppers. I loved the crunch from the bell peppers and the onions cooked in the tomato sauce. The crust was cooked to perfection. I also tried my friend's pizza, mushroom and olive. It was rich and tasted great with the cheese. One of the employees was kind enough to give up peppers in oil to put on top of the pizza. That took the pizza put several notches. Pugsley's Pizza is a very quirky and unique pizza place. The decoration is very our there. However, the staff is very nice. They have a card minimum of $10, but my friend and I wanted to order a combo that was just under the minimum and didn't have enough cash. They said that it would be totally fine! That was very nice of them to do that. The plain slice and the garlic knots were pretty average to me. There was really nothing special about them. The bathroom was super creepy. Most of the stall doors did not close and the door to the bathroom was wide open. read more

Let me tell you, Pugsley's Pizza was impressive. The look of this place is really nice. Every single thing that I have ordered was really good and I would come again to have it again! Ok, so this is definitely not the best pizza in New York, or in the Bronx for that matter. Great, yes. The best? Ehhh definitely not. My boyfriend and I went for the sausage parm hero which was amazing, and a personal pie cheese pizza topped with basil. The sausage and pepper, gooey, cheesy monster was topped on a homemade piece of buttery bread. It was also seasoned just right. I expected the pizza to be topped with fresh basil, however, it was topped with dry basil leaves, out of a shaker. That's ok though, because I devoured that baby like nobody's business. The cheese lacked a bit of flavor, but the toppings, the thin crust, and just the right amount of grease made up for it. Sal, the owner, and his wife are probably two of the most hospitable people I've ever met. We felt right at home as soon as we walked in. Sal even made it a point to learn both our names, and kept screaming over to my boyfriend, Dave, to ask if he was enjoying his sandwich. He even serenaded us with an Italian opera! I look forward to heading over to the Bronx more often, just to eat wonders from this lovely little hidden gem! read more

I've tried many pizza parlors since moving to NY. By far and wide Pugsley's tops them all. It was both my kids birthdays and they came out with 2 pizzas shaped in their age - playing the HB song on a trumpet with a flare on top - ABOVE and BEYOND! The pizza was first class and delicious. Our party of 12 showed up for our reservation after a visit to the Botanical Gardens Train Show, and we were warmly greeted by the owners Sal and his lovely wife. They invited us to "take over the place!" we did and had a fabulous time, great pizza and so much fun. The 4 little children in our party delighted when the gong rang to announce, pizza!s ready! Kids are super welcome here, and the atmosphere is joyous, right down to Sal playing a Christmas tune on his sax with a fiery sparkler in the horn. read more

We live nearby and thank God for wonderful, wonderful Pugsley's. When you live right near Little Italy Bronx you think you've had all the best pasta and pizza in the world but then there is Pugsley's. My daughter, 8 years old and a horrible picky pizza "connoisseur" had Pugsley's pepperoni pie, she shut down her complaining. I love the pizza too, I think ate 3 slices without stopping, then had to leave some for the kids. But when your kids don't complain and say the pizza is delicious, you bow down. What a quirky little pizza place! The pizza was excellent. We even tried the penne a la vodka pizza (which seems kind of like a carbohydrate overload), and it really does taste pretty good. Also tried plain cheese and meat lovers. You can get it by the slide or whole pizzas. We had a small group and they made one pizza 5 different combinations - amusing and efficient. The owner is gentlemen who must be in his 70s he is pretty funny. The crowds tell you how popular the place is. Rumor has it that they close for the summer and they all go tour Italy. On a nice day it is great to eat outside. The inside seating seems a bit tight. read more

This place is open ridiculously late. Hidden gem that's only open during school season. It's very weirdly decorated, which adds to it's charm. The adorable old Italian couple that run the joint are very sweet and treat you like family. Sicilian kisses are to die for. Nice desert option read more

Love Is It! It's just about the greatest college pizzeria there is. When you walk inside, the eclecticity is startling.  The entire west side is filled with pictures of friends and memories, many from Fordham University. The thousands of faces pictured here are all smiles. The owner, Sal, brings his 3 generations of family to run Pugsley's. And while Sal is fooling around, the rest of the family are busy bees. If you're lucky enough to have Sal show you around, you realize everything has a purpose. Every detail has meaning. But most of all: Love is it! Sal painted the entire shop. He, his family, and friends put together every board. The building used to be a horse stable, but they've reconstructed it into Sal's dream pizza shop. Every corner has a lyric to his own poetry, every construct has deep meaning to him. This is a man with a thousand hats. You could spend your entire Fordham career getting to know Pugsley's Pizza.  And how's the pizza? Not bad at all.  Add in some of their spicy peppers for a big kick! Oooh! Went here before seeing the holiday train show at the Botanical Gardens, less than a five minute drive away. My wife and I ordered a large pizza, mozzarella sticks, and a calzone. You know, a reasonable amount of food for two people. Hey, don't judge. The mozzarella sticks arrived first. They are freshly made with fresh mozzarella and are baked not fried. No, these are not the mozzarella sticks you get at your local dive bar. These reminded me of something my grandmother would have made. Some may view this as a negative, but I liked the "homemadeyness" (?) of it. The crust, sauce and cheese on the pizza were perfect in my book. Just a really good NYC pie. We had sausage on half and it was definitely some of the better quality sausage I've had on pizza. The calzone is something special. It's kind of hard to explain, but it's almost served open faced, like a giant ricotta and melty mozzarella sandwich. From my examination, it looks like they bake up some thick, round loaves out of their pizza dough, then split it, top it with cheese, and broil or bake. It was DELICIOUS. Seriously I've been craving it since then. Absolutely will go there again the next time we visit the Botanical Gardens! read more

Do yourself a favor: Don't ever ever ever eat more than one slice. You will regret it for hours. So if you're hungry, get a slice and a chicken roll and some garlic knots. As a side note, last I remember it is closed in the summertime (or maybe just August) so be prepared for that. And stick to outdoor seating if you can. And try to avoid going downstairs. read more

You won't find this college hangout on a main drag like Fordham Road, but rather a back street near Fordham University's Bathgate entrance. While you're munching on the slice, chicken roll, and soda special, check out the zany decorations. If you're lucky, you'll get to bang on Sal's gong and make a wish. One of the most terrifying places I've ever set foot in. Dimly lit, sketchy, smelly, and the worst part, sticky seats. Similar to what I imagine a black site prison feels like. Nevertheless, the pizza was actually really good! A lot of grease, but a good crisp on the crust. Also, service was attentive and pleasant, and a large pizza was ready in around 10 minutes (although I was there on a quiet weekday afternoon). I may return to Pugsley's, but I will definitely not be going inside. read more

Pugsley's is the go-to pizza for most Fordham students. It's so close that its practically on the campus, it's open late so that it can serve as a final stop on endless drunken nights, and it has a ubiquitous presence at free food events on campus. It has a fun, lighthearted, collegiate atmosphere. Sounds great, right? Well, there's one problem: the pizza just isn't very good. The cheese tastes cheap. There is plenty of sauce, but it's uninspiring. The crust is doughy and flaccid. Without ordering ahead of time, there isn't usually a very good variety of slices when you go to the restaurant (compare this to nearby University Pizza, with a plethora of innovative specialty slices at bargain prices). The prices are solid, and the chicken roll is good. The atmosphere is fun and memorable. Unfortunately, the pizza just doesn't measure up. Do yourself a favor and walk 200 feet to University Pizza on Fordham Road, it's far superior. read more

I never thought I'd say this, but since graduating last May - I MISS PUGSLEY'S! The owner, Sal, is an awesome easy-going guy, always playing music and socializing with the clientele. And the clientele is all Fordham students, all the time. Its right outside the gate and literally open from noon until about 5am. I don't even know if the pizza is actually good - the atmosphere - which is warm, inviting and fun is really what takes it to another level. This ISN'T a restaurant typical of the Arthur Ave strip in the North Bronx. This is a fun little pizzeria for the jeans and tshirt crowd that are probably on their way home from Mug-Zs. read more

Sal, I still love you. And the magical way you cook your topped slices, while I cannot remember the laborious process you described for my dad, is pretty delish. Your ziti is still filling. But why are the slices so small? Why do you charge ***$2.50*** for your smaller, less satisfying slices? University gives me more across the street for just $2. And I want more. I am older and wiser now, Sal. I cannot suffer my stomach to your extra 50 cents when I can walk a few blocks for something better. What a place! As soon as you walk in, you know a lot has gone down here over the years. There is so much to look at and laugh at, from the burnt pizza to the statue of libery to the gong, and countless signs, photos, and graffiti. Sal, the owner, is great. We arrived early, and it had not opened yet. First time there, so we didn't know if it was closed, or if the entrance was on a different side of the building. The owner Sal arrives and parks in the small lot next to the building (at the time we didn't know he was the owner) We asked him if he knew how to get into Pugsley's. He told us we had to scale the wall, squeeze through the bars on the windows, and then break through the glass. We asked if he would help us do that. He said he would if he didn't already have a key to the door behind the pull down gate. He is a funny and very friendly guy. He brought us in, turned on some music, and asked what we wanted to drink. We already knew what we wanted to eat. The Richie special is a slice, a chicken role, and soda. (can't remember the price, but it's very cheap) No matter what you do, get the chicken role. It is amazing. Pizza crust wrapped around piping hot chicken, cheese, and sauce. Amazing. Also, the cheese slice was excellent, and large. Sal rang the gong when our orders were ready, and again when we left. I'm sure it is quite the place to go late night, especially after several drinks. I wish my college had a pizza joint like this near campus. read more

Our fourth and final stop on Scott's Pizza Tour! From the get go, this place is so the type of place you want to end up at after a great night of drinking. The interior is just full of crap and I mean everything. There is very little rhyme or reason to the décor just stuff that the owners has collected over time or that the local college students have donated! I was fortunate enough to ask a question to the right guy in the right place because Sal (I think) had my wash my hands, slapped a I Love Pugsley's t-shirt on me and brought me in the back to make a pizza with him. I helped stretch the dough, apply the sauce, put on the cheese, and even put that big bitch in the oven. I will give credit where credit is due - the larger the pie the harder to put in the oven and while I know you get used to it, at first it's hard stuff. The pizza itself is good! Massively large slices that are perfect when you are hangry!!!! I would totally go back to Pugsley's Pizza because good food is great don't get me wrong but there is something about environments that also make you feel welcome and that you belong. Pugsley's definitely fits that fill! A+ experience!!!! read more

It's not everyday that I'll give a pizza place 5 stars and I definitely did not expect much when we walked here. The decor is wild and the location is a little strange and confusing but all my preconceptions immediately flew out the door when I was greeted by the two wonderful and very hospitable owners. They were so funny and talkative as we waited. While the ordering is a little confusing, the owners make up for it by making you feel right at home! Sal even came over to check up on us and talk to us. Prices were great too, I had a Snapple and a large Sicilian slice for $5.50 and for $8 my friend got water, two slices of regular pizza, and 6 garlic knots. Now for the pizza, AMAZING, the sauce to cheese ratio was spot on and the crust was the perfect combination of crispy and soft that I can't seem to find many places. The garlic knots were also quite enjoyable. When next visiting Fordham I will be sure to check back here again. read more

Really good pizza, even if you're vegan. I was able to substitute vegan cheese (but for a price). It was $5 extra but since vegan cheese isn't in demand in The Bronx (and most places don't even offer it to begin with), I can't complain. Was pleasantly surprised! Very nice staff :) read more
