    Mixed grill platter
    Yasser H.

Another great gem that we found in search for a good kabob spot. We ordered the mixed grill platter for 2 people. It came with a various assortment of Kabobs ( chicken n beef ). Lamp chop and cHunks of chicken and beef, served over a bed of rice and veggies on top. The presentation was very nice. All the meat items were very good and the rice was flavorful in itself. The veggies were grilled/sautéed. One of the kabobs was a little dry and I would have preferred for it to be more juicy and tender. Nonetheless, overall everything was very good and we were satisfied with the food quality and service. We will be back here soon.

Yes, that is supposed to be a falafel.

Dry. That is the one word description of the food. I ordered the lamb mixed grill that was a shish, chapli and adana kabob with rice. My wife had the falafel wrap. All my lamb dishes were dry, I mean desert dry. The white garlic sauce helped, but it was dry. My wife's falafel was the worst falafel we've ever had. It was completely burned on the outside and was inedible. Look at the picture. And the pita was stale, tough and chewy. When we walked in for dinner, when we asked if we could dine in, I thought they were take out only the way we're were greeted. It was very unwelcoming And it's not the cleanest place either. I made a mistake of only looking at the ratings and not reading reviews - rookie mistake. I'm not sure why they get such high ratings, but it's the worst Middle Eastern food we have ever had.

    Lamb and chicken burnt

This has been our go to for Afghani food for the last 2-3 years & the food has always been good. Last time was a couple of months ago and it was below average. We chalked it up to a bad day. Today's takeout was a disaster! All of the chicken and lamb was burnt! Completely inedible. So disappointing.

The food is delicious even from delivery and not even dining-in. Would come here to eat in-person sometime soon! Thank you for packing everything so carefully too!

Sitting at the 2nd table, looking out towards the streets.

Not a place for a first date. Small but cozy. Two available tables of 4. Parking on the street was hard to find. Overall clean. Ordered the chicken biryani. $11.99. Not much service. Waited 10 minutes before anyone offered to take my order. The bread was fresh. The rice was flavorful and a good portion. The chicken was moist. The dish had yellow and green squash, chicken, onions, with a strong cardamom flavor. Topped with a sprinkle of cilantro. The salad was a little brown. The white sauce was delicious. You can really taste the dill in the sauce. It's all about the food. This was good. I would order again.

Pukhtun Chicken & Lamb Platter for Four

This place is so busy, but the cashier was still so kind to carry my to go order to my car so I wouldn't drop anything. The impressive display of desserts (traditional Afghani sweets, Biscoff/Nutella cheesecakes, all home baked!) and the first row seat of the sizzling grill makes Pukhtun Afghan a premier destination in the New Brunswick area. An impressive amount of food for "two", the Pukhtun platter could easily feed four, so for the price I think the amount of food they give is incredible (for nearby college students, this must be a blessing). The flavors in the kebabs were understated and subtle but still good. The kebabs were all dry - perhaps because I took the food to go. The rice under the kebabs was tasty. I appreciated all the grilled veggies on top but they were somewhat bland. "Bolani" and "Mantu" alone would have nabbed this restaurant a 4 star. The bolani was simple but effective. I did have to air fry it when I got home because it got soggy. The "Mantu" was warmly spice and stuffed to the brim with meat, and I LOVED the lentils on top. I would have liked it to be creamier. The baklava was soaked through with very sweet syrup. It took away the crunch from the layers of filo pastry and almost made it taste like a donut. There also weren't enough nuts layered in for my liking. Personal preference, and maybe it was just a bad batch, but I wouldn't order this baklava again.

A hidden gem in the sea of restaurants on Easton Ave. While on our way to fritz's for some American cuisine, we decided to try something new and this quaint restaurant caught our eye. The small interior isn't much but as you are led into the backyard, you are seated under a covered patio area with heaters if needed. The menu offered a wide array of Mediterranean food such as Baklava and Hummus as well as traditional Indian dishes of Biryani and Butter Chicken. We ordered the lamb kabob, mixed gyros, butter chicken, and samosas which all were delicious and worth the price. The service was wonderful and the place was clean. Definitely would come back due to the welcoming nature of the restaurant and staff, the quality of food, and the outdoor atmosphere. If you're looking for quality, delicious food and great service, this is the place to come!

A great dining experience! The food is flavorful & delicious as well as plentiful. They have a great permanent outdoor seating area as well as upstairs dining room. The owner is very personable & during these COVID times the facility is very clean! DO NOT go to New Brunswick Without eating here! Very expansive menu & very affordable. Try the Ashak & Samosas for apps!! Awesome!

PHENOMENAL. Meat was so juicy and flavourful and everything else was delicious as well. Very generous proportions. Staff was so kind and hospitable. Even offered to help me carry the food to my car. Can't wait to stop by again!

Wow, what a hidden gem I have found in New Brunswick right by Rutgers! Everything was made to perfection, loved the grilled Pepper with every platter. The restaurant is very generous with the white and hot sauce too. Definitely going back to try out other items on the menu soon.

We stumbled in late in the day and our server was so friendly and greeted us as if we were the first customer of the day. We were offered suggestions that were phenomenal, especially the Ashak. Incredible potions of Lamb Gyro (offered in spicy or regular) and lamb kormo. Then we were offered dessert, and initially declined, until we were asked about Kanafah and warm milk tea! If Kanafeh is available when you visit, you must get it with the warm milk tea! Can't wait to visit again!

We were told it would take 30-35 minutes, which is fine for cooked to order food. It really wasn't very busy, but the order took 50 minutes. The order was sitting on their counter ready to go, but it appeared they were backed up with making the bread. Once the bread came out, they bagged it up and we were ready to go. They almost forgot to give us the side salad, but they remembered before we left. Now for the food... - The bread that we waited for- was doughy and undercooked. It had burnt pieces stuck to it and they were not shaped as nicely as their usual bread. - The hummus side that we ordered, which was almost $8, was a half filled half pint container (very small amount) of what appeared more like a sauce rather than the thick hummus we are accustomed t. I wouldn't order this again. - The salad was watery...they need to drain the water better - The rice was cold - I think it was sitting out too long - Now for the main event - the meats - we enjoyed the flavor. This saved our dinner, we did enjoy the meats. We called them about the bread and they were apologetic, and told us we can stop by for bread next time we are there. As this is one of my favorite restaurants, I want to give them an opportunity to do better next time! The afghan bread and their rice have alway been my favorite part of their meals! I think it was an off night for them, I'd definitely give them a chance again in the future.

Everything from the Chicken Chapli Kabob, Chicken Gyro Platter, Chicken Tikka Masala, Beef Kabob to the fresh made naan is delicious. The hummus is a must try. The prices are still extremely reasonable and the portion sizes are large. The service and staff is also very personable, friendly and full of suggestions. The interior has a casual front side with tables and the back has some booths with some ethnic decor. There are not many Afghan restaurants in the area, but hands down this is one of the best ones I've been too. I definitely plan on continuing to eat here.

The service was friendly, and the food came out extremely quickly. I felt we were being rushed just a tad, but not a huge deal. For appetizers, the falafel ($7?), Mantu ($8?), and bholani cadu ($6?) were ordered. Regarding the falafel, there were five to an order. The falafel was very crispy and had decent flavor. I thought they needed a little more seasoning present. The Mantu were Afghan style dumplings filled with ground beef, onions, and seasonings. It was garnished with homemade mint yogurt and lentil sauce. This was light and soft with tons of flavor. The dumplings were filled appropriately, and the lentil sauce was a pleasant addition. The bholani cadu was a thin fried pastry filled with butternut squash and seasoned with fresh herbs and spices. This was interesting. The wonton was very crispy. The squash filling was sweeter than I thought, but still tasty. I also might add all of the three sauces provided at the tables were good, with the cilantro one being my favorite (cilantro I believe anyway). For my entrée, I had the lamb shank ($38?). It came with a soup, salad, a choice of rice, and naan. The soup appeared to be a lentil soup. It came out hot and was very pleasant. The salad consisted of tomatoes, onions, and cucumbers. It was prepared nicely as all the pieces were small and a good size portion. The simple dressing was great too. The lamb shank came with a few vegetables. The lamb was extremely tender, but not much meat was on the bone. There needed to be a little more seasoning too as it was lacking. I am just glad the lamb was so tender. I went with the Kabuli rice which had steamed carrots and raisins on top. This was fluffy and flavorful with a ton of it. The naan was okay, a little too crispy. I also tried the lamb chops. They had an unreal cook on them and seasoned well. I also tried the zamarud rice, which was good too. For dessert, the rice pudding ($8?) was ordered. It was creamy and filling. The nice crunch from the pistachios on top was a good addition. Will I go back? I would, yes.

I highly recommend getting one of their hummus appetizers, whether it be the standard hummus or the house hummus, which has a little bit of a spicy kick to it. I'm very much a fan of the pyramid chicken, especially if you are into the flavors of honey mustard and a touch of mushroom in a cream sauce. A very unique dish that I haven't found anywhere else.
