Suzanne is the owner of Pulse and is now the only stylist there. She is a real expert, with the highest styling competence I have ever seen. I've only had haircuts, cannot comment on color. With a Pulse cut, it's easy for me to style it the way Suzanne shows me. I just came back from a camping trip with no styling tools, and my hair still looked cute even without any way to touch it up. Camp shower (yikes!), towel, and go - hair still felt nice. I'm a pretty practical person, don't get my nails done etc., but treating myself to a great technical haircut from Suzanne is well worth it. I went in withe the expectations that I would not be able to get my hair very light from the balayage I hoped for, but I was very wrong. It had been about 6 months since I had last gotten my hair done and the ends were very dead. I had to reschedule my appointment and they actually got me in the same day! I was a little nervous about who I would see because it was last minute but I had no reason to be. Nikki did a great job and it's exactly what I was hoping for. Way lighter than I thought I could get and no damage. I am already getting lots of compliments. Nikki is very personable and easy to talk to. If you dont know, balayage takes hours to do correctly, so it's good to have good conversation. She explained the total cost of the appointment which I really appreciated the break down of the costs. Then I saw Theresa for my haircut because Nikki was booked, like I said I was a last minute appointment. We were laughing about how I was Beyoncé because I have multiple stylists. First, I would like to thank you and your team for being attentive to our group. I am really appreciate of that. However, the cost charged to me with the qualify of service I received was not appropriate. My makeup stylist was rushed twice by two other employees and the result of my requested look was not even met. I looked like a clown. I looked in the mirror and thought it was a joke. I did not want to make my stylist feel bad (she was already receiving pressure from the two other employees there) that I thanked her for the service, paid, and went to my car to try and fix how awful I looked. My hair was done by the same stylist and was falling apart too. I'm very flustered with the experience and regret spending so much on something that was that awful. I am really hoping that by providing you feedback, future clients do not go through the same frustration as I did and currently am. A word of advice I received after this experience: no one knows how you do your makeup or hair better than you do. read more

Just finished my first-ever haircut with Suzanne. Not only is she friendly and easy to talk to, she gave me just what I was looking for. What a treat to have a first time experience with a stylist who listens beautifully and managed to do that impossible task of cutting off damaged ends without taking all the length off. I have been a client of Pulse Salon for over a year and a half. The first time Suzanne did my hair the shop had only been open for a week, and Ive been returning ever since. Suzanne is an awesome hairstylist. She is great at listening to her clients, understanding what they are looking for, and being honest about how it will look on them. Ive gone through lots of hair phases in my life, but since Ive been a client at Pulse I have loved my hair more than ever! Suzanne has done my hair for many events including engagment photos, my wedding, and christmas photos. Be sure to look at the photos posted, theres quite a few professional photos that capture Suzannes talent. For my wedding this Fall Pulse Salon took on the daunting task of doing hair for 8 of my 11 bridesmaids. Everyone was incredibly happy with how there hair turned out, and everyone got in and out of the shop in a timely manner. Even the girls who weren't getting their hair done were graciously invited over to the shop for a morning brunch. Pulse Salon provided food and drink, it was even better than I expected. Finally I get to give a great review for a salon in Oregon!!!!! I honestly thought this day would never come. I chose Pulse because I learned that they use the same brand of haircolor as my salon back home (Schwarzkopf). They also had good Yelp reviews, reasonable prices and a really convenient location. I had a nice consultation with Suzanne and we came up with a plan to get me back to the color I'd come to love. When I got to my appointment a few days later, I was still really nervous based on my previous experiences at other local salons... but after a few minutes of chatting with Suzanne, I felt totally at ease. Not only was Suzanne kind and engaging, she obviously knew what she was doing. I was finally able breathe a sigh of relief. In the end, Suzanne did a fabulous job with my blond highlights. Great technique and great results. I really appreciated how she explained that this color was really the first step in a two or three-step process to get me back to the blond I was hoping for - I love having a plan! Other notes: Parking was easy - don't let the downtown location deter you (the very sweet receptionist even took my keys and some change and fed the meter for me when my time was about to run out!). And, nothing special was done to evidence such an outrageous pricetag! One daughters highlights don't even look like highlights; it looks like the stylist full-stopped where the foil stopped and she's got a stark, brown straight-edge where "root" meets lighter body. Suzanne was able to weed through my vague instructions, hungover inability to verbalize coherently and delivered EXACTLY the color I've been picturing for years. I have crappo hair, 30% gray and hair so independent it may be curly one day and wavy the next- not easy to tame. I've been fighting with myself all day over whether I should write this review. What's more important: telling the Yelp community about a sub-standard experience, or keeping my mouth shut so some kid can continue doing what she does to pay for college? At the end of the day, though, I know I value other peoples' critiques of services, so maybe this is for the greater good. I don't know the name of the girl who cut my hair (not a good start, I know). She was young, very nice and friendly. She was trying to pay her way through architecture school and was really interesting to chat with. She also seemed to know exactly what I was looking for when I asked for her to try to reproduce my formerly-cute pixie cut, which was suffering from several weeks of outgrowth. She asked all the right questions and I was sure she was going to be awesome and my hair was going to look amazing. An hour later and... Meh, not so much. I don't want to be cruel because she really was an interesting, easy-going person, but you could tell that perhaps her cutting skills weren't on a par with her conceptual skills. What I left with was something closer to my brother's $10 Supercut than the soft feminine pixie cut I was looking for. I may go back to Pulse and ask for a different stylist. I chose this place because of the great Yelp reviews and the stylists on the salon's site looked like they knew their way around a short, woman's cut. Where do I begin with this review? I have so many things to say. First off, I'd like to say that brow lady (Jaida) that I was seeing at a previous salon moved to Pulse Salon, so naturally I followed (so glad that I did). I called yesterday to confirm my appointment and the receptionist on the phone was helpful advising me where to get off on the max and how far I would need to walk to the salon (not far at all). I got off the max this morning and was 20 minutes early so I walked across the street for some coffee at Case Study Coffee. Pulse is conveniently off the max (for those who don't want to pay for parking) which is a great way to travel. I than proceed to the Pulse Salon (1 block west of the Case Study Coffee shop). As I walked in I fell in love with the interior, music, refreshment station, decorations and the atmosphere. The receptionist (Jen) at the front desk was very helpful in answering ALL my questions. She was very upbeat, energetic and very welcoming. I went in today for a brow wax with the VERY best Jaida. My eye brows always looks good after the appointment and no irritation. Jaida's room where the service took place is calm and warm. You can't go wrong with Jaida and yes I would recommend her to my friends and family. The experience overall was FANTASTIC!! Pulse is warm, friendly, inviting and very relaxing. From the minute you walk in and when you leave RESPECT is given all around. I loved the location so much and Jaida - I already booked my next 3 appointments. On my way out, I noticed other services that Pulse provided such massages and Jen mentioned that all the masseuses are awesome. I look forward in other services with Pulse in the near future. Great overall experience and I love my haircut! I was visiting Portland for work and needed a haircut. I did a a search on yelp and am so glad that it lead me to Pulse Salon. They were able to squeeze me in at the last minute. I normally never buy products, but ended up buying this Moroccan oil for hair that she used and I'm amazed at how big of a difference it makes. I wanted to like this place. I did. The woman that cut my hair seemed to be receptive at first. I had two ideas, we worked out which would work better. Then she decided to do something completely different. It was obvious that I didn't like it, and I just couldn't find the words to tell her how to fix it. She cut a little more to thin the pouf out, but still not helping. Finally, to make matters worse, she told me that I didn't know what I wanted. (huh??) And, that I could come back tomorrow when i figured it out. Add about 5 oz. of pure, unfiltered aggressive tone so that I would leave as soon as possible. I paid, left quite embarrassed. What did I say? Was I an annoying customer? Eh, I really don't believe so. Just a girl who believed in lots of great reviews of this place, but I guess I got a grumpy stylist. I've been going to Kristy for at least a year and a half now. I recently had a less-than-good experience with another salon with a different stylist, and going back to Kristy was like a breath of fresh air again! She understands my hair type & styling preferences, which I find really helpful, Kristy can always suggest products that will help me manage my fine, frizzy hair. She's awesome with cuts and coloring. I have dark brown hair and have gone semi-blonde, reddish, and purple with her in the past, to give you a sense of her versatility! After getting a recommendation to use Courtney from a friend of mine in San Francisco, I went immediately. It's difficult to find someone to do your hair just right in a new city. I had my haircut one week, and after describing what I wanted, Courtney cut it perfectly! It's a great haircut that allows me to style it if I want, or just let it go with ease. I moved to Portland 7 months ago and had a terrible hair experience at Dosha...I came to Pulse at the suggestion of my mom, and I will never go anywhere else as long as Jen is here. She immediately knew how to fix my hair and she was been with me ever since! She listens to all my suggestions and gives me tips and tricks for styling and protecting my hair in between cuts and colors! Having moved from Chicago a few months ago, I was in need of finding a new hair colorist and stylist. After doing some research on yelp, I made an appointment with Suzanne at Pulse. She's the owner of the salon, but she definitely doesn't come off that way - she's not arrogant about her abilities and her pricing was very reasonable. I made an appointment for partial highlights and a haircut. Suzanne was a great mixture in a hair stylist - she listened to what I wanted but also made some suggestions on modernizing my look. Suzanne ended up doing an amazing job and gave me this whole new look but without making any drastic changes. When I went home, my husband's jaw dropped. One of the most annoying parts about moving is finding a new stylist. When I had previously moved to a new location, I went through a few salons and some bad haircuts before I found one I could be loyal to. I wasn't at all looking forward to re-doing that process when I arrived in Portland with an overgrown mane. I chose Pulse because it received good reviews, had some magazine write-ups, and it's located two blocks from my apartment. The receptionist at the time was friendly, but a bit unprofessional. Sometimes we just aren't in the mood to be professional though. I get it. I've also worked in a salon so I understand that gossip amongst the stylists and receptionists is to be expected. I probably would've preferred not to listen to it for 20 minutes, but that's okay. Courtney was right on time and really personable right off the bat. I told her the basics of what I wanted to do with my hair and told her to, basically, do what she wanted. I've been sporting a bob-style cut for a few years now after I discovered that it suits me best, but Courtney did the best cut I've had...ever. She took a lot of weight out of my thick hair without making it choppy and uneven. The layers fell gorgeously and it's the most low-maintenence cut I've had - which is very important to me. Basically, she nailed it in every aspect. We got along really well and I had a great time. I didn't have to spend hours at the salon, I wasn't bombarded with additional services, and I'll absolutely be a regular at Pulse. I chose Pulse based on Yelp reviews, and you all didn't let me down! I saw Kristin (note - she is different than Kirsten) and was able to get a same-day appointment. The shop is really cute, and it shares the duplex house with a coffeeshop. I had a mocha after and it was yummy. They have free wi-fi at the coffeeshop too. Back to Pulse - I was greeted immediately and offered tea, water, wine, or beer. I chose the tea and waited on a very comfy chair while she made me the tea. Kristin then met with me and asked what I wanted. I gave her some vague ideas (I have boring straight hair), and then she took me back for the washing. It included a nice scalp rub and a neck rub, which were great. I ended up with a great haircut that was different then I had ever had before. It played up the great parts of my hair (naturally blonde, fine but a lot of it) and helped with my weakness (flat hair). Kristin spent almost an hour with me, and it was well-worth the $45 (before tip) that it cost. She also gave me a coupon for $5 off of the next cut. I don't usually spend that much on a haircut, but it was a great, relaxing experience and I will definitely go back. They also have one person who does massages and facials if you want to have a pampering day. read more

Courtney fit me in for a last-minute Olaplex treatment a couple months ago and now has a new loyal client. I just went back tonight and like last time, left feeling absolutely gorgeous and like I have "that good hair" again. She's very knowledgeable, personable, attentive and a master at her craft.
