Purgatory Resort Summer Day Passes are 100% worth it! Our family of 5 with kids ages 4 years old to 10 years old absolutely loved it. The passes include a ride on their Inferno Mountain Coaster, the Alpine slides, Go Karts, Board/Boat trip in the lake and gold panning but we went on double ride day and had double the fun! Our half day passes were from 10am-1:30pm but we ended up staying until 3pm just enjoying the mountain scenes and Bear Bar and eats! We all agreed it was something we would want to do every summer. The views and adventures were incredible and we definitely made lifelong memories here. Note, strongly suggest you hit up the coaster, alpine slides and gold panning together as the Go Karts and Lake Adventures are more towards the entrance of the resort, but with the shuttle and awesome staff, it's easy to get there and they were super supportive of time restraints! read more

while weather can't be controlled, the communication from the resort about the conditions was awful. by day 2 only 20 of the 107 trails were open. the office messed up my ticket exchange and i paid more for their mistake. ticket office staff was rude. we had an injured child skiing and while waiting for her to be brought down an employee told me to chill out and have a cocktail. staff was so rude. mountain was mug at the bottom. can't control conditions but your employees don't have to ruin the experience. read more

Meh. Kids were SO excited to ride the mountain coaster. We decided to go around 330 on our last day. It was $80 for 4 people to ride the mountain coaster. Pricey and probably not worth it, but the kids gave us cute faces and we gave in. After standing in line for 30 minutes, it started to drizzle and they shut the ride down. Given the time of day, they said they wouldn't be reopening. So, we took our two devastated kids into the ticket area to get our refund and lo and behold, NO REFUNDS due to weather. NO EXCEPTIONS. We are leaving first thing in the morning, so we're out $80 and the customer service was terrible. She pulls out this random laminated page to point out this policy that was not mentioned before spending a boat load of money for a coaster. Needless to say, I highly DO NOT recommend this place. The summer activities are SO FUN! We ended up riding the ski lift to the top of the mountain, 2 miles one way! Saw several critters on the way up, including a very rotund Marmot. I love that purgatory has fun things to enjoy, even when the winter snows have all melted away. Next time, I'll try the mountain coaster and alpine slide! read more

We came here with the kids. I couldn't believe how early they made us lift up at the bar on the ski lift before we got off. I had a small child, four years old, and they asked us to lift the bar of the ski lift way too early. She could have fallen to her death if she just wiggled a little. I even asked if we could wait till we were a little closer to lift the bar up because it literally takes half a second to lift up, and they were very rude about it and said no. THEN I look up and see that earlier this year, a seven-year-old boy fell and was flight lifted away from this exact same situation! Here is the article below. We bought ticket for the mountain coaster and never having been there before, was sure where to go. We bought the 3 ride passes and got stuck on various parts of the coaster (there were 3 of us). There were 2 cars in front of me--first one was having a malfunction. Stuck for 25ish minutes. We were looking to sled on tubs but never could find it. Poor signage, very expensive food. We went here for the Alpine Slides. There was a few sprinkles of rain when we're standing in line and everything came to a screeching halt. They then sent 2 sleds down with employees to dry it off. It reopened and we took the chairlift to the top. 3 of the 4 of our party were allowed to go down and then 1 minute later, they stopped the ride again, and left me stranded at the top. I had to take a really bumpy ancient rickety school bus ride down the dirt rocky dirt to the bottom of the mountain to join my concerned family. The driver Ben and helper Dill were fun to talk to. We were told we could get a refund back, as the resort was now closed. I never went in one ride. We had to ask management to get a full refund as the girl at the window did not want to refund us at all. That is poor management. read more

This is my first year being a season pass holder. We've be visiting purgatory for our annual family ski trip for quite a few years now and we decided it's worth more than one trip a year. Yes the prices here have been going up like every other resort in the country post-Covid, but I feel it's still a great value considering the lift lines move a long pretty fast and they have plenty of trails to ski. My only complaint is that the public bathroom weren't kept up as much as I wanted but it's a holiday week and the parking lots were full to capacity so that's understandable. Overall we had another amazing week here 22 inches of new snow and more on the way. BTW nothing beats a beer at the Powderhouse, Dante's or Purgys on a ski day. As a long time Durango resident and season passholder purgatory I must say how incredibly disappointed I am in the quality of experience at purgatory. Parking is a disaster. Lifts are regularly breaking down and dysfunctioning. making it feel like it is potentially an unsafe place to ski. No evidence whatsoever of ownership trying to improve the experience. It has been declining every year since I moved here 10 years ago. It needs new ownership/management or the community of Durango just needs to boycott the place and quit skiing there. read more

The Murphy bed was broken and fell on my husband while putting it down. It caused a bleeding scrape and bruising on his stomach. Once the bed was down I noticed hair in the bedding. I complained and our room was changed from a room with a beautiful view of the mountain ski lifts to a view of the parking lot and construction. I am very disappointed. read more

First time skier of Purgatory; however, we have skied many other Colorado, Utah, and New Mexico resorts. Purgatory has some great runs but they're not all groomed after a dumping of snow. Shortage of good labor too. Bottom ticket machine didn't work so you had to take a shuttle to base mountain, wasting another 30-40 minutes of ski time and money. Group lessons for kids - would not recommend. Our kids learned nothing new and had ZERO progress after a full day and $550 wasted. Overcrowded classes, cold food served to the kids, and lazy instructors. Food during Spring Break at Purgy's - 45-60 minute wait. Waste of good ski time and money under again but little other options base mountain options. No water stations near lifts like other resorts. No trash cans on mountain. No tissues at lift lines. Bare minimum amenities. Mountain also closes down at 4pm, zero nightlife, limited restaurants nearby (literally like 3-4), no grocery within a 30 minute radius. Low class patrons. This resort needs to step it up or I'm afraid it's a dying concept here sadly. read more

My wife and I participated in the Alpenglow Snowshoe Tour. We paid $65 each for snowshoe rentals, lift tickets, and appetizers at the Powderhouse. The tour lasted from 3:00 till 7:30 PM (past sunset) and we saw some spectacular light on the surrounding mountain peaks. Photography was highly encouraged on this tour and a DSLR would easily be light enough to hike with. My wife enjoyed the six person, cushioned chair lift that drops you off on top of the San Juan Mountains. Our group had two guides, Jan and Cynthia, who shared their extensive knowledge of the local animal tracks and pine trees we were seeing. They also offered to take pictures of the participants at all of the scenic stops. This tour was not physically taxing at all. In total, we hiked 3.3 miles and most of that was either downhill or flat going. We hiked about 1 mile until sunset and then the Alpenglow decided to show itself on the surrounding peaks in pink and rosy hues. Grizzly Mountain and Engineer Mountain were gorgeous with this glow (see attached pictures). After sunset we were treated to appetizers, wine and hot cocoa inside the Powderhouse Restaurant. The selection of four wines included three red and one white and the cheeses included brie and sharp cheddar. This stop allowed everyone to warm up and fill up. After eating, we descended under a beautiful, silent, starlit night. Everyone had already left the mountain by the time we started our tour except for the snow grooming machine operators and the ski patrol. The majority of the hike is downhill, occurring after the Powderhouse Restaurant. If you like spectacular views, fun, knowledgeable tour guides, gourmet food, and easy, reasonable hikes then this is the tour for you. The only reason I am not giving 5 stars is I wish the hike had been a bit more of a workout and the walk in the parking lot after the tour was a bit treacherous. The resort needs to throw down some salt to keep the parking lot from freezing into a ice rink. read more

Skied Saturday and Sunday of President's Day week this year and this was our third visit to the mountain. Note, we've never stayed here so I cannot really speak to the lodging experience (but I do feel like food would be very limited which has always made tend to just stay in Durango). Lift ticket pricing is dynamic like other Mountain Capital resorts (Power Pass), but overall pricing is pretty reasonable, especially if you buy early. We ended up paying $99 for Saturday and $109 for Sunday (which I bought a few days later). I noticed Saturday was selling for $209 on day of though, so definitely keep this in mind as a way to save A LOT if you book at least a week or so in advance (longer the better). Kids under 12 ski free on Power Pass also which is a nice perk of these resorts. The skiing itself was pretty good. It's a nicely varied mountain with a bit of everything that I'd say leans towards beginner and intermediate skiers. Don't get me wrong, there is some good black and even double black terrain here, but the lower elevation compared to some other Colorado resorts means no open bowl skiing and limited sustained steeps. Snow was pretty good with over 3 feet the previous week and a pretty good season going, but keep in mind that this place probably could be limited on more advanced terrain during a low snow period. One nice thing about the black trails at Purgatory is that I'd say the average level of skier tends to be a bit on the lower side for this mountain, so if you like moguls and steeps, you'll have that terrain largely to yourself (especially compared to how busy some of the main cruisers can get). Lift lines overall were acceptable for a holiday weekend. I don't think we spent more than maybe 10 to 15 minutes waiting at any point and often got on pretty quickly. The 6 pack express at the village can be a choke point, especially in the morning, but I suggest just hitting the singles line with breaking up your party if you want to get up quicker (we did that on Saturday morning and were on the lift in less than 5 minutes). There are a few express lifts now and this mountain has come a long way in this department since the first time we skied it in 2010. We utilized the day care facility for our 18 month old and overall everything went well. At $130 it's also a bargain compared to some other resorts in other regions (where you may pay over $200). The one reason I'm dropping the star rating down to 4 is that the ski school was really disappointing to us. We booked our 5 year old into consecutive full day lessons (9 AM to 3 PM) at $230 a day. He's a high level 2 skier and we've been trying to get him over the hump to level 3 so that we can graduate him past the magic carpet and start skiing green trails with him. When we picked him up each day and asked him if he learned anything, his response was simply: "No." We also received no report card or any updates from instructors on how he was doing; drop off and pick up was very impersonal in this way and paled in comparison to some of the other mountains we've done lessons at (Alta is kind of the gold standard in my opinion from what I've seen with a fantastic full day ski school program). I also found the food pricing on mountain to be a bit boggling. I paid less money for elk sliders at the Backside Bistro (a sit down restaurant near the top of Lift 5 on the backside) than I did for a mediocre noodle bowl from the cafeteria in the same lodge. This just made no sense to me that the standard cafeteria food was that expensive in comparison to their full dining experience (which we got blocked out of on Sunday due to "reservations" which we could not figure out anyway to book ourselves). Definitely keep this in mind. Seating also was challenging both days with dining areas really over capacity; I think they could use more options on mountain. Overall, we'll be back, but maybe not until both of our kids can largely ski without lessons and I don't know if I want to drop the money for that here again based on my experience this time around. read more

Super cool! -SPF if needed - Sunglasses to barrow if needed - Lost and found Cons: -open 9/3:30 only (no night riding) - !!!!!!- limited food at night, most everything closes at 4:30 - example pizza place if you get off the mountain at 3:30, place your pizza order at 4, easily a 2 hour wait before you get it due to labor shortage - they will let you sit in there while you wait but you have to get in the door before 4:30 - Market has very limited grocery food so bring your food with you or stop in town on way up!!!! They told us to wait 2 hours for a refund and then after 2 hours, they kept adding time to wait for a refund. Finally, after asking to speak to a manager, no refund was received. Spent the Thanksgiving weekend here with my family. The staff at Purgatory Lodge were outstanding as they were friendly, very accommodating, and went above the call of duty helping us out. Here's the thing, they didn't have to but they were compassionate about out dilemma and helped us out. Awesome! The staff at the ticket booth were very professional, friendly, helpful, and patient. The price we received was a bargain! At the fitting room, three staff members helped us out. That's excellent Customer Service! Plus, they threw in a free helmet rental. Nice! I will always love this resort as it was the first place I ever learned to snowboard, then later, where I really honed my ski skills! My husband grew up in Durango, so we come here frequently. Purgatory is a great resort for a number of reasons, most notably it's diverse terrain for all levels of skiing. I love that you can come here to find a double black chute, mogul runs, or fun cruiser greens and blues. Some of our favorite runs are Zinfandel, Boogie, Catharsis, and Peace. There are a few downsides. If you're used to bigger resorts (EPIC and IKON pass), this likely will be less than what you're used to. There are no signs portraying lift line wait times and only 8 chairs. It can also get pretty expensive for a family trip since it's not EPIC or IKON, plus flying into Durango's local airport can get pricey. While there's less pomp and less skiable terrain, the views are stunning from any of the runs. Purgy's, Powder Haus, and Dante's offer decent slope side options for food and drinks. The town of Durango is one of my favorite places in Colorado. Purgatory and Durango are definitely worth a visit! read more

I have been a season pass holder since 2002 and have come to the conclusion that after the 2022-2023, I will no longer be a patron of Purgatory Resort. Lift lines are long due to very little natural snow; lift ticket prices are full price when only two lifts service the main parts of the mountain; employees are rude because they are disgruntled; food quality has declined; and the overall atmosphere has become somewhere I don't want to be. Purgatory management and staff needs a good dose of "there are other choices" besides Purgatory. Sorry to see you go but not really. When a form of management returns that cares for locals and season pass holders, I might return. Until then, I'll spend my hard-earned dollars with Wolf Creek where military veterans, not just active duty, are appreciated with discounts to honor their service. Last year, Purgatory discontinued offering military veterans a 15% discount, and claims it is "military friendly" as they offer a discounted season pass for active duty only even though the closest military facility is 219 miles away in Albuquerque, NM. Like active duty personnel are going to travel that distance regularly to take advantage of a season pass. Anyone who has served on active duty knows what an absurdity it is to think the commute back and forth from Albuquerque to Durango is sustainable throughout the winter season with likely time constraints encountered by active duty personnel. Bottom line: go somewhere else like Wolf Creek if you're going to ski or board in southern Colorado. read more

The resort shut down the day before we were to arrive, and has refused to refund our lift tickets, instead issuing a resort credit. Not even knowing if they will be open next season, I am not happy with this. Look, I understand Covid has closed business, in this case by order of the state. However, as a consumer I should not be penalized for this closure. Caveat emptor, folks. It took me some time to decide how to write this review. Obviously Mother Nature played a large part in the actual skiing conditions at the resort - runs were a bit icy and at least 3 lifts weren't operating - but there just wasn't anything spectacular about the resort. We arrived on a Tuesday around 9A. No one was directing traffic, so of the multiple places to park, we chose "Base Area." (Good call, though lot was MUDDY when we finished skiing, which meant lots of mud on boots, etc.) Loved the plastic Adirondack chairs set out at the base of the Pagosa Express lift so spectators could relax & you could visit in the fresh air. Bathrooms were clean, a medium size locker was $8 for the day ($10 for large), and they honored a military discount on my lift ticket. On the slopes: majority of blues were steep and had ups & downs, not tons of moguls. Runs on the backside were wide, for the most part. More signage listing run names, warnings, and/or directions to a lift would be nice. For example, Legends run to the #8 Legends lift doesn't give you a heads up that you're going to traverse down 3 sharp turns, including one that could put you in a creek if you aren't careful. Worse is there aren't a lot of choices to avoid this traverse if you need the Legends lift to return to the top. Also never saw anyone monitoring the slow zones, so was on constant lookout for those flying down the steep runs with no regard for others. Towards the end of the day, getting to the lift was becoming difficult - ice was making it hard to pole up to the lift gate - and at one point the young man checking tickets - Alex, I believe - scanned my ticket then just stood there talking to someone behind me while I struggled to move. I had to ask him to excuse me at which point he moved and I could go forward. Not a bad one-day resort, however, it's not one we will actually seek to ski again in the near future. read more

This place sucks. Don't go here, even if you're just chasing good powder. Simply getting to the lift was god awful. Want to get to the resort? Good luck. We had to wait in line for a shuttle in freezing temperatures for an entire hour. It was a miracle we didn't freeze to death. Want to rent equipment? Forget it. We reserved our gear a month in advance just to wait in line for, get this, 3 and a half hours. Oh and if you didn't activate your lift ticket before you arrived, good luck using the wifi or spotty cellular service. Oh by the way, if they ask you to show it and you say it isnt working, they'll remove you from the line. Want to ski a full day? Nope, not after spending hours getting through all of that to just wait in line for even longer to take the lift that DOESNT EVEN CHECK YOUR HUNDRED DOLLAR LIFT TICKET. Maybe you're hungry because its now lunch time and you still haven't skied? Forget it. Sandwiches cost $16 and good luck getting one because apparently they take 2 hours to make. No refunds. No skiing. Just freezing, waiting, starving, and suffering. This place really lives up to its name. read more

This is not Vail, Aspen or Steamboat. In southwest Colorado, this is THE best skiing. This is a family-oriented atmosphere. The "bunny slopes" and lessons are closest. The "backside" of the mountain is challenging. There are many "blue" trails and slopes. In the summer, there are many mountain bike trails, as well as a zipline and other activities. If you're a rich snob, spend $200 for a one day lift ticket at Vail or Steamboat. If you have a family, come to Purgatory to ski, and stay in nearby Durango with more restaurants, per capita, than any other place in Colorado. read more

If you are in the Durango area in the summer with kids or teens you need to stop at the Purgatory resort. It is open everyday 10am to 6pm from the end of May to almost the end of August. They only open on weekends after school starts so call or check website. You can pay per ride or buy an adventure ticket which gives you a flat rate to ride a choice number of rides. We had a blast! Our favorite is the alpine slide but you can go summer tubing, big airbag jumping, do the scenic chairlift, zipline, ropes course, gyro chair, bungee trampoline, paddle boarding and boat rentals. They also have mountain bike uplift which takes you to a great downhill trail. They have miniature golf, wall climbing, treasure panning, bounce house which is fun for the really younger kids. Check the weather before you go. Thunder storms will stop the chairlifts and any elevated activities. read more

Until someone does something about #357's temperature during the summer time, please do not waste your money. We would have been far more comfortable in a tent. A tent keeps out the mosquitoes and cools off at night instantly. This condo was warm in the night even with the screen-less balcony door wide open with a fan blowing *enter mosquitoes and cigarette smoke all night*. I understand they didn't design these places with summers in mind, but come on. A $300 portable AC unit would do the trick. We ended up paying about $250/night for this place. Complete rip off. Oh and some outlets and light bulbs didn't work. Reviews from at least a year about on booking.com say the same thing. Hasn't been fixed. Whatever entity is managing this property is getting away with a borderline scam. Purgatory needs to stop booking this place. Especially during the summer. read more

BUYER BEWARE!!!! I Ski Colorado often this was going to be our first time skiing Purgatory. I drove my family 36 hours from Florida. COVID 19 occurred en route, and the day I arrived they closed the resort. We stayed one night at our Airbnb in Durango and then drove back to Florida. I was told there would be no refund for lift tickets of $1153.38 after returning to Florida. They offered a partial credit to their resort to be used within one year. I am not able to make it back to ski this year with the entire family like we planned for this spring break. I disputed the transaction with my bank. Purgatory then came back and said that their policy is " No refunds on lift tickets" so the amount was not returned to me. This is a horrible business strategy so enjoy my 1100 dollars because I will never return to Purgatory and I will advertise endlessly for others to stay away from your resort. read more

Truly Purgatory, waiting and waiting forever What was expected to be a fun filled week of skiing and relaxation with my family, turned into the most stressful rip-off of our lives. It's a shame that this had to be our first experience in Purgatory Resorts, as it was extremely understaffed and packed to the brim. Rising early did nothing as the shuttle to get to the rental area took one hour of standing outside, and each shuttle simply drove away; each one at full capacity. Arriving at the rental area was two and a half more hours of waiting, with less than half of the available ski and boot fitting tables being worked by employees. Considering that everything was reserved WEEKS IN ADVANCED, we were extremely dissatisfied with how slow paced this process was. Only two hours of our full day ticket was used up, as the lift lines were the length of ones you'd find at six flags. No refunds exchanged because "we eventually ended up using and receiving our equipment that day". The ENTIRE LOCKER SYSTEM WAS DOWN FOR THE DAY. Considering how expensive tickets are, you would think that this business could guarantee the safe storage of one's personal belongings. Lunchtime was a nightmare as the pizzeria in village center had a 1 hour and 50 minute wait (there goes the two hours of skiing we have left) We ended up trying to buy sandwiches at the deli, but the line was still pretty bad and each sandwich was priced at...I kid you not, 16 DOLLARS. For a sandwich. My family and I bought a loaf of wonder bread, a pack of cheese, and some ham that totaled $19. Again, this is what you are paying a significant amount for... ham and cheese sandwiches to be eaten outside in the cold, because there was no seating available. Sad to say that I tried to reserve lessons for my children, but the lessons were ALL SOLD OUT and each group was at max capacity. They moved everything online--from your tickets to ordering your food to renting lockers. But alas, their internet sucks. Wifi doesn't work, and they don't have good cell service (perhaps work w phone providers to install a tower nearby ?!) rentals took over 2.5 hours to so pretty much we wasted half day standing in line. read more

I have just booked my next vacation to Purgatory and I can't wait. We have been going her every year for the past 10 years. I don't see why this place has a 3 star review count. Maybe it is because I am nostalgic and this place has nothing but great memories but I truly believe this is one of the best resorts you can take your family to. I come here every year because the VRBO's are affordable and the runs are incredible. I snowboard and I have found this resort to be very snowboard friendly. Pergy's is at the bottom of the runs and is a sure stop at the end of the day. I will note that the staff can be slow but I have come to expect this because they are so packed. The snow can be hit or miss but I have seen some crazy powder (see pictures) I love the high speed lift and it comes in handy when you want to get those last minute runs. The village has everything you need and the lessons for my kids were top notch. I go back every year because I love this place. Give it a try! read more

Summer activities were nice. Beautiful view. They have a lot of teens and kids working all of the activities for kids so that was a little disappointing just with the overall don't care attitude but it wasn't terrible. A smile goes a long way. It's a nice little resort "town" and good to kill 2-4 hours if you aren't staying there. We had a good time. read more
