Ordered a Grill Pork Baguette, which taste good. I am not sure why this place isn't packed.

I've visited this place several times and have generally enjoyed it, so I was hoping to leave a positive review. Unfortunately, my last couple of visits have been less than stellar. The gentleman at the front has come across as rude on both occasions. Most recently, I called in an order and he answered with noticeable annoyance in his voice, took my order, told me it would be 20 minutes, and hung up. I arrived after about 10 minutes and the sandwich was already ready. Had I followed the full 20-minute wait time, the sandwich would have sat for another 10 minutes and likely become soggy. I ordered the tofu banh mi, which has historically been very good. However, this time and the last time, it tasted like some of the ingredients may have been refrigerated for too long. I know that may sound picky, but at $13.99 for a sandwich, I think freshness and service are reasonable expectations. I'm sharing this because I've enjoyed this place in the past and would like to see it return to the quality that made me come back. read more

After reading other reviews, I decided to order in advance. To my surprise, I arrived not more than 10 minutes from when I placed my order and it was already prepared. As others have noted, the seating area is limited but at 11:55 AM there were still tables inside and outside available. However, patrons started coming in at about 12:05 PM and while a good majority of folks (seemingly regulars) took their food to go, table availability quickly filled up. It wasn't the best Bahn mi that I've ever had, but it was still good. The bread was mostly crunchy on the outside and the veggies were fresh. Something, perhaps the pickled veggies were sweeter than I expected but it didn't take much away from the rest of the sandwich. Portion-wise, it's a good sized sandwich. Came here for an early lunch yesterday for the first time. Even though it was early, they still had a constant stream of online orders and customers coming in, mostly regulars. It's a mom-and-pop shop at the back of an office complex, with 3 tables indoors, and 4 tables/2 benches outdoors. The menu at the entrance had quite a number of Vietnamese items. The breakfast menu and the specialty sandwiches/salads menu were behind the counter. They did accept credit cards/Apple Pay. The prices listed on their menu included a 4% cash discount. The shop was clean and service was friendly. I ordered the chicken banh mi and Vietnamese coffee combo. It took a few minutes as the sandwich was freshly prepared. The coffee was pretty strong. While the sandwich was not as flavorful as I would expect, it tasted healthy and super fresh. I also loved how crispy the outside of the bread was. It was quite expensive considering the size of the sandwich, but not surprisingly as it was Los Gatos. read more

***USP: Tiny little restaurant/cafe with less than 5 or so tables. They serve pho, Vietnamese sandwiches and some western style "specialty" sandwiches. ***LOCATION: they have plenty of parking but are tucked away in the back of a building so I had some difficulty finding them. ***FOOD: I got the chicken banh mi. Priced at $12, it's inline with most other sandwich places and surprisingly not expensive given the location. The sandwich was exceedingly fresh, I thought I would have 1/2 of it but ended up chowing down the whole sandwich by myself. Though the ingredients were great, bread was crusty outside and soft inside, I missed flavor. The jalapeno slices provided a much needed element of heat but they were very few. Ordered takeout of their Grilled Pork Banh Mi and the Spring Rolls. The Banh Mi was decent, but I thought the grilled pork lacked juiciness and flavor. It was served in a baguette and was very crunchy. I'm more of a fan of softer bread. The spring rolls were very good. Hmmm reviews seemed legit and that's why we went. Unfortunately we weren't impressed. I ordered the Grilled Chicken. It was bland. I didn't see any pesto or sun dried tomatoes on it. Disappointing to say the least. The owner recommended my sandwich and my boyfriend's too. He was unimpressed with it also. It's a good location for them because they're the only food offering in the vicinity. Businesses in the area essentially have one choice if they need lunch. The price point is not worth the sandwiches. At least not the ones that we had. Inside is a regular sandwich shop with a few tables to sit at and a few places to eat outside. It's ok. Similar to other sandwich shops in the environment but definitely better choices in town for certain. Meh... Premium price for mediocre sandwiches. Sandwich Maker is hard to visit because they're only open on weekdays and close early afternoons. I finally took a Friday off and we were able to grab a to-go order & take it to the Santa Cruz Wharf to see the king tides. We told the owner it was our first visit and asked him what he liked. We went with his recommendations so I got The Californian and my gf ordered the Grilled Cheese. Mine was just okay and I expected much better based on the reviews. My gf didn't care for hers and she didn't finish it. Service was friendly & each sandwich is made to order but lacking anything to make them amazing like others are saying... our orders didn't stand up to the hype. So on top of a mediocre sandwich I was disappointed too. Inside you'll hear the owner behind the counter talking to customers on the other side of the room. The topic during our visit was the Mike Tyson boxing match happening later that evening. If you work in the surrounding offices it would be super convenient spot for lunch but at a high price. I can't think of a reason for us to try it again when there are fantastic sandwich options in, and close to, downtown Los Gatos. read more

Stopped by here on a Monday afternoon since we were craving some pho and there was no wait! We ordered the Grilled Pork Banh Mi, Chicken Pho, and Shrimp Spring Rolls! Everything was delicious and the service was so fast. The Sandwich Maker looks like a standard sandwich shop hidden in the back of a Los Gatos office complex but it has a twist. While it serves good versions of the Western style regulars (main board) it also offers a selection of very flavorful Banh Mi sandwiches (side board). I got a bbq pork Banh Mi served in a crunchy roll with all the trimmings. No pate offered so traditionalists take note. But .... Yummm! (See picture) The guy at the counter said they'd been there for 28 years and were part of the neighborhood. Given he knew half the folks who came in by name and where they'd just vacationed I'd say he's not exaggerating. He went on to plan a club meet up with the UPS driver (Mamma Kin's in SoFa). Based on all these great reviews, I was very excited to try this place. The shop itself seemed very popular during lunch hour. It was a no frills kind of sandwich shop. They had outside picnic tables and some inside seating too. Unfortunately, I was overall disappointed. First, I ordered pick up for the most popular items: a pork banh mi and spring rolls. The guy over the phone seemed pretty rushed but it didn't seem like he missed an item. When I got there, it was the same man who took my order and he completely missed my spring rolls order. I expected to immediately pick up my food since I didn't have much time left for my lunch break. He then proceeded to charge me for it and said it would take four minutes for it to be ready. He didn't double check with me if I had time to wait nor did it take only four minutes. It took closer to ten minutes. For the food, it was expensive for a banh mi. Almost $12 for a skinny banh mi. For reference, a banh mi at Duc Huong is $8 and they are THE golden standard. The bread could have been crispier. There was not enough meat (at least for the price). They didn't have pickled radish, just pickled carrots. The carrots were also not very crunchy/snappy . It was more soft. Sauce and pork marinade were very good though. Springs rolls were good and expertly rolled. They're rolled to order, and they didn't fall apart when you ate them. However, they were a bit pricey in my opinion. It was $11 for three rolls. This was my first time here and I really enjoyed it!! I got the shrimp pho which was FILLED with FLAVOR!! The shrimp were not peeled but it added an authentic touch ;) the broth was just incredible though. Food came out quick, service was great. Great little place to grab lunch. The owner is very friendly and he's diligently working to clean up the chairs and tables, including the outside. It's a family affair with all the ladies working in the back of the kitchen. The place is nice and clean with no frills lots of pick up orders coming through, which is a good sign. Looks like they have bought me sandwich but I didn't have room to eat all three dishes. I tried the chicken phoa and it was very good. I really enjoyed the spring rolls. I came over the hill for a doctor's appointment and stopped by this place for a bite before I headed home to Santa Cruz. Really glad I found this place. This was the best banh mi I've had since visiting Vietnam 8 years ago on my honeymoon. The bread was amazing, the proportions were spot on, the meat was perfectly cooked / delicious, and all of the fixings were fresh. I may be making the 40 minute drive on occasion to get my fix. The bánh mì is one of the best I've had--fresh, flavorful, and very filling at a great price! What stands out is the consistency: all visits were consistent in customer service and food quality! They're not stingy on the meats or toppings, and the bread is top quality--crispy on the outside, soft on the inside. The service is also outstanding: friendly, welcoming, and fast. The gentleman even greeted me by name, which made it feel extra personal and authentic. This sandwich shop is a classic mom and pop office park deli, with a Vietnamese twist. They have all the classic traditional American sandwiches, chips, cookies, etc, plus Banh Mi with the usual protein options and vermicelli, rice bowls and random other specials. No frills. The BEST bread! Nice crispy crust, but soft inside and very fresh and warm. I did the grilled pork banh mi and Vietnamese iced coffee combo for $13.95, an amazing deal honestly. (Other options for the banh mi + drink deal are chicken or beef) Grilled pork was perfectly grilled with nice lemongrass and other spices flavor. Sandwich came with light pickled veggies, a few sprigs of cilantro, and a just a touch of Vietnamese butter. Most other places overdo the veggies and give you a few measly slices of meat--the reverse was the case here. Everything made to order and took about ~5-7 minutes to prepare, so you got your food at peak deliciousness. Interior is giving family owned business. Hum of refrigerators, music playing softly, staff speaking in native Viet, and random aquarium wallpaper haha. The business owners keep the shop immaculately clean--no sticky countertops here! They take credit card, Apple pay and cash. There are 5 small tables with 2-4 chairs each, not ideal for big groups. I've been looking for a delicious Pho and Bahn Mi sandwich place nearby and I found one. Even though I have lived nearby for quite some time I never knew about this gem. This place is amazing. It's been a minute since I've done a review and this one is worth all the praise! My family and I were looking for a sandwich place nearby after an appointment and we came across this hidden gem. Based on the reviews we decided to give it a try. I was immediately drawn to the pho and banh mi options and we decided on the beef pho, chicken pho and bbq pork banh mi. Our order came rather quickly and let me tell you... the food was on point!! The pho broth was extremely flavorful and portions were very generous. The banh mi sandwich was enough for 2 people and packed with flavor! The owner, Ty was very pleasant and being our first time, he made sure we were very well taken care of. He went above and beyond to ensure we had a great experience. Based on the exceptional customer service alone I would give this place 10 stars but for the sake of the review I can only give 5 stars. My husband got a couple of banh mis and spring rolls to go! So good! I prefer fish sauce, but I believe only nem nong comes with fish sauce and the spring rolls come with peanut sauce (my husband's explanation haha). Anyhow! The sandwiches - so good! The baguette itself is fresh, and the carrots are slightly pickled. The jalapeños give the banh mi a little kick that is just perfect (I did cut some of it up and distribute it a bit more evenly so I get some in most bites). Chicken had great flavor.
