First time here and I'm gonna chalk this up to being a holiday weekend (4th of July) and them being understaffed. But everything, literally EVERYTHING was undercooked. It took forever to get our food so I'm assuming they were going as fast as they could, and cutting corners where they had to just to get it out quickly because the place was packed with other 4th of July tourists. But the breakfast potatoes were practically raw, the crepe was gummy, just all around terrible. It was also way too expensive for the quantity and quality. One of my biggest pet peeves: raza giving attitude to raza. Girl at register, chill. There wasn't even a line. One of us received our food, but after about 30 minutes, I had to get up and ask if they had forgotten mine. During that time, I noticed the cook spending several minutes chatting with two people. When I finally asked, she checked the receipts and told me my order had never been given to her. No offer to make it right, just a casual "sorry about that." Food was okay. Service was not. Here on a camping trip in Julian, we really enjoyed checking out this beautiful spot and treating ourselves to something we didn't make ourselves! I had saved Purple Owl Cafe in my collections for my first trip to Julian, and I really enjoyed it. The atmosphere and food were both impressive. I loved their interior decor; although there has been certain comments on it not giving "purple owl" vibes, I think everything looks well put together with several purple colored and owl decorations that respond to the name. There could always be more, but that seems like a nice fit to me, lol. Anyway, I loved my Fun Guy tartine with potatoes, and my matcha tasted just how I like it. Vegan whipped cream was on the menu, but they did not have it, so that was a bummer, but I'll call it blessing in disguise to avoid more calories. My friend and I wanted to try the Beyond Papas, but they were all out of beyond meat. She ended up ordering the Luca tartine and said it was okay but has had better. I stopped by with my friends after apple picking to get a coffee beverage. Staff was nice and wait wasn't long at all even for how busy it was. I ordered a cinnamon honey latte. They ran out of oat milk so I got coconut milk instead and it was delicious. The vibe was comfort meets cute. This is a place to go to for slow mornings or to get work done! This was our first stop in Julian, so we could start our day of exploring with a solid breakfast. There was plenty of parking available and it's close to the main street. Went by for mochas as it was the only place open before 9am in the area. They were excellent coffees delivered quickly. I had also thrown in a couple puff pastry last minute, just to have something to eat, even though at 99% of cafes those kinds of things are usually old and tough & never have much filling in them and are 50% pastry and 25% air. My family dined here on 4th of July! Because of that, parking and crowd was probably different than other days since there was a 4th of July parade starting before we arrived. There was no wait to order and plenty of tables indoor and outdoor. There is a small parking lot shared with the Sheriff's Dept and a pet clinic. The restaurant has plenty of menus when you walk in. Order at the register, receive a pager, and grab your goodies when it rings. I ordered the cream cheese dill-ight tartine and it was absolutely delicious! All the different flavors together were perfect! The whole dish kept me nice and full for a day of exploring Julian! My snickers iced latte was also tasty! My husband, our baby and our dog dined outside. I really like their outdoor seating area because it's super spacious and open (no gates or fences), tables (only a few) are very spaced out, and there was so much shade from the trees! Really didn't want to write this review, but this is a reminder to myself. We wanted to grab coffee quickly before our drive back home, but it turned out not quick at all. It took us ~45 minutes to get our drinks (we didn't order food). A little disappointing, but at least the drinks will be good right? Wrong. All the coffee drinks had minimal coffee flavor. Came here on a weekend afternoon, about 30 mins before closing. Just one other family leaving as we entered. A short couple minutes walk off Main Street, slightly downhill. It is located right next to the police station. Anyways, at the time of our visit the cafe was already closed, but we were able to order our drinks and a little treat from their display. Randomly decided to go to Julian since I was bored one morning and left the house without coffee. The first stop I made was by Purple Owl because according to Yelp this was one of the better options available. I was craving a good coffee and the menu was one of the reasons I stopped by. It definitely stood out with all the fun flavors to choose from. I normally don't go for these two flavors but decided what the heck and ordered the s'mores coffee and the raspberry one. The s'mores flavor was a bit of a letdown. Im not the biggest s'mores fan in general but was expecting a bolder flavor like more marashmelloy or even smokey. It was more of a subtle sweetness. The raspberry one was the complete opposite of the s'mores. It was sweet and rich! If I didn't have the s'mores to balance out the raspberry and vice versa, it woulda been a disappointing visit. Overall, I might not rank it the best coffee but for the region I guess it was fine. The caffeine did the job, so at least I left feeling energized. I'd give the menu itself a solid 4 stars based on the variety and options, but the vibe of the place loses a star. We walked in and it felt like everyone was staring at us, and not in a welcoming way. The staff was fine, just busy buzzing around. We didn't stick around to sip our coffee nor try the food. You know I like to leave positive reviews, but we were really disappointed with this stop. We ordered a simple white mocha, and they charged extra for the white mocha--which didn't make sense. We also asked for our drinks to go, but when we picked them up, the lid wasn't secured properly. My husband burned his hand, and after fixing the lid, the cup busted open again and burned him a second time. When we went back, they replaced the cup but casually said, "Yeah, these cups aren't the best." Not exactly reassuring. This cafe is such a gem, hidden slightly away from the bustling street in Julian. My friend said he knew a spot and I'm so glad he brought me to Purple Owl! The interior is so cozy and I felt like I was a Gilmore girl walking around in the fall. There is a large food menu and so many creative fall drinks as well. The Julian latte (apple pie latte) was unfortunately sold out when we got there, so I ordered a strawberry white mocha. My friend got a hot latte. We also ordered one of their savory crepes! We sat in there, talking and eating for two hours. We looked at the time and were shocked at how quickly the time flew by. The cafe got quite busy in the afternoon but it felt even cozier. It is a great spot for larger groups because they have lots of seating. I think they forgot to put espresso into my drink because it tasted like a strawberry chocolate milk. The pros: cute outdoor space, kid friendly (they have toys your kids can play with) and my brown sugar cinnamon latte was good. The cons: it took 25 mins to get my latte, my husband's plain iced coffee and a smoothie. We also ordered the last 2 macarons they had sitting in the pastry window and instead of giving them to us when we paid for them they waited until the drinks were ready which was really weird since they were just sitting there that whole time. We also ordered banana chocolate crepes that we never got because we had to leave before they were ready. My husband tried to get them to go but the kitchen was painfully slow (we had been there 30 mins at that point at the crepe was the only made to order food item we ordered). They also refused to give a refund. So, all in all I probably wouldn't go back. At least not when I have anywhere to go quickly.
