Great ice cream choices and we took home the blackberry pie, it was a hit with everyone!!

Very cute and very very clean! Waitress was on point and very friendly! She suggested pot pie or chicken salad, both were excellent. The beef dip is the reason I'm not giving five stars. The meat was dried out and no favor. The pie was awesome. Here is my annoyance.... They added the gratuity, I HATE THAT! I would have tipped more than they added, but I refuse to do that. read more

I don't normally post much on here.. but I thought I'd let everyone know.... I stopped today while I'm Custer and get myself a treat.... I spent almost $25.00 on a pie from the purple pie place ....I called and informed them I found a hair in my pie ... he tried to blame it on a pastry brush hair until i told him the hair was about 18 inches long ..They told me to take the hair out of it and the pie would be fine eat... I told them I'm not eating a pie with someone's hair in it. .. told me if I bring the pie back they will exchange it, I explained to them I live an hour away and I don't go to Custer very often and Asked if they would do a certificate for a pie when I get back or put my name on a list for when I do get back down there... Said no I have to bring back this pie to exchange it..... Seriously..... What a horrible place!!!! I wouldn't eat there ever again.... read more

I remembered this place in my visit years ago and had Strawberry Rhubarb pie which was fantastic. So I tried it again and was delighted that it was just as good and maybe even better. So my wife bought a full size Peach pie and we were blown away how fresh the peaches were, not to soft and not to hard with the perfect amount of peach sauce. read more

Ordered hot fudge sundaes & they were over $6 for less than tasty experience - the man working was grumpy towards my son. The cashier was more cheerful. We went here twice on our vacation to the Black Hills and Custer. The first day was for ice cream after a 15 mile bike ride. There was a line but the wait was well worth it. The ice cream was just what the doctor ordered. They ice cream isn't anything special but it was perfect after a hot day of biking in 90+ degree weather. The second time was for lunch then dessert. There is seating outside and inside. You seat yourself and someone will take your order. The menu is basic (sandwiches, soups, salads, etc.) They were out of what my husband wanted (the pulled pork sandwich). They said they had just finished serving a huge table of 20 people. The only thing we found a little odd was that we both ordered a panini but it came on hot dog buns turned inside out and toasted. We are pretty sure they also ran out of panini bread but just didn't tell us. I really didn't care what kind of bread it was on. It was a great sandwich. They have a full salad bar and it is great. Lots of yummy veggies and fruit. For dessert I ordered the blueberry pie and blueberry cream cheese ice cream. Awesome! My husband had the chocolate peanut butter cheese cake pie. He had to eat fast because my son was eating it all. Despite how busy they were our service was great. Our server was very friendly and prompt. OK. Yeah. This place. SERIOUSLY! The pie was amazing!! My husband had the strawberry rhubarb & I had blueberry with a side of vanilla ice cream. The crust of this pie was so flaky and had a taste of its own which is awesome. We sat outside on pink adirondack chairs enjoying our treats after a visit to Crazy Horse monument. This place was better!! A bit of a line, but once they took your order it was served almost immediately. When I asked the owner how his day was going he said, 'I own an ice cream shop and people are buying ice cream, so it's going pretty good.' :) I'd upgrade to a better plate and better quality plastic forks, but other than that, this place was top notch! read more

The pie was scrumptious at Purple Pie Place. I went with the cherry, in the spirit of our presidents and our morning visit to Mount Rushmore. My wife had the chocolate cream pie. We also enjoyed a very flavorful and generous portion of chicken salad and a panini. The only complaint I'd make is that our waitress didn't understand English very well, and it was a struggle to find out whether my wife would get her pie or not. Our waitress also spent a few minutes fussing about the "children" she was working with on the staff. That's always uncomfortable for diners to hear. Otherwise, this was a very unique spot for lunch near Rushmore and the Crazyhorse memorial. Purple Pie Place also gives you a small discount on a piece of pie when you add it to your lunch, and that's a nice treat. read more

The staff here was incredibly rude. They gave the wrong food and told us it was not their fault the owner doesn't keep proper stock. Where else can you get a fruit pie with jalapeno that actually taste good? Everything but the ice cream is made from scratch, the ice cream is Blue Bunny or Blue Bell! After a trip through the scenic Jewel Cave, we decided to stop on the way back to Keystone in this odd looking purple colored house that purported to sell ice cream and pie. Without a doubt, one of the better stops during our short visit out to South Dakota that's left me continuously happy that we didn't just stop at the local Dairy Queen. Pulling into the gravel parking lot, which is adjacent to residential driveways was a bit precarious, yet once negotiated the five of us walked inside and were thrilled by the sweet sights. Fudge, ice cream and pies were the order of the day and despite a menu board that reminded me of a Chicago hot dog place, everything else was anything but. The flavors of ice cream were of typical fair found at any 31 Flavors, but what sets the place apart is definitely the pie. Ordering a slice of rhubarb pie as well as two slices of peanut butter pie a la mode, we shared amongst ourselves and by Great Odin's Raven, it was something Baker's Square could never hope to top. The rhubarb pie is worthy of talking about on its own out of the sheer succulent flavor it wrought upon the medium plate we received it on. The decadent dish is a blitzkrieg of flavor that will leave many in what will feel like a brief diabetic coma, but don't worry, that's just your brain registering the amazing thing you've put in your mouth moments before. A must order upon any visit to this delicatessen. Next up is the peanut butter pie with a generous scoop of vanilla ice cream on the side. Cliche choice, but it's difficult to argue against the classics. And, as someone who enjoys peanut butter a bit head and shoulder above the rest, this was a spot on delight of entreating flavor. The pie slowly melts in your mouth, coagulating with the vanilla ice cream to create an amalgamation not far from a peanut butter milkshake, but all the more fantastic. The drizzle of chocolate and caramel on top is merely icing, in the most literal sense possible, on top. The price of admission for all of that, on top of two small cups of ice cream was roughly $20 and is perfectly acceptable when compared to what Dairy Queen or any other boutique locale in Chicago charges. Also, it bears mentioning, the older couple behind the counter were pleasant and welcoming. Overall, a worthwhile stop on our brief stop and a must-visit for anyone who happens to find themselves in Custer. read more

I was extremely disappointed with this place, based on prior reviews. All the pies on display were about 2-2 1/2" deep. I ordered the cherry pie and they brought me a deflated, sorry excuse for a slice of pie, especially at nearly $5/slice. I have no doubt the crust was homemade, but the filling's taste and texture were obviously fresh out of the can. read more

Every summer my family came here when I was growing up so we were very excited to visit again. We were in on 6/26/20. The pie was just as great as we remember BUT the reason for 3 stars is the fact that there are items listed as dairy free that are not! I know enough to ask questions but if someone newer to not eating dairy saw that and ordered, they would get sick. You can NOT list things as dairy free then tell me there are milk proteins in it. There is a sign with a type of disclaimer in the store.... but the dairy free option on the sign needs to go. It may be lactose free, as the gal explained to me, but that is NOT the same as dairy free. The guy that rang us up was also very inappropriate as he was discussing how he was covering shifts for other people and complaining. That all being said... We DO recommend this place to everyone passing through. We are absolutely sending our nephews here when they are in town next month. The pie is incredible and did not disappoint. We got the strawberry rhubarb and it was amazing. The dairy free signs simply need to go. There are not dairy free options. read more

I Expected more a cleanly and professional environment considering it's reputation. No gloves/hairnets/any kind of personal sanitary equipment. Slow service, and most importantly a LOT of cross contamination between all scoops and all ice creams. For example - someone with a peanut allergy would be threatened by every scoop and every flavor of ice cream as all the scoops share the same water. Same story with potential pathogens. We've gone through 1 blueberry pie because it was too delicious to let sit lonely in our fridge. They seated us in a charming outdoor patio to accommodate our dogs. Brought water and food for them. All of the staff were so sweet and kind to our dogs. We had a turkey sandwich and pot pie that knocked our socks off. And to top it off, the owner came out to chat and make sure that not only we but our dogs were being treated nicely. One of the nicest business owners I've ever met. Well I'm just going to put it out there that the rhubarb pie is pretty good. Like other reviewers have mentioned, rhubarb is a plant which is actually pretty sour if cooked incorrectly. In this pie however, the sourness was definitely toned down and it actually complemented the sweetness pretty well. I personally like sour things a lot so I enjoyed the pie greatly. The crust was average, it wasn't crispy, flaky and buttery like how I like my crusts. It was kinda just there as a container. My mom doesn't really like sour things that much and subsequently wasn't a fan of the pie. The pie was interesting, but the crust definitely let it down. Unfortunately, it was also served lukewarm. In the end, something interesting to definitely try out if your in the area. Me... at the end of the day I still prefer a hot peach pie or cobbler served with a scoop of cold vanilla ice cream. read more

Best pie around! Every time we are in the area we stop for pie & ice cream. We have never been disappointed! On a side note, I dropped my wallet on our last visit and didn't realize I had lost it until the next day when we arrived in Rapid City. I drove all the way back to Custer State Park where we had camped over the weekend and searched everywhere I could think of. Rudest people ever. Deserves a no star rating. Stopped in to get a slice of pie and coffee. Sat down at a table today and when the waitress (finally) showed up to take our order we were told in a snotty tone "this is the dining area, dessert is up front". They serve ice cream and also meals as well as pies. We had planned to each have a slice of pie with ice cream and a drink. And purchase a whole pie to take to a friend we were visiting. As you can probably gather our bill probably would have been pushing $50. We promptly left. Pretty sad if you treat all tourists this way.
